Unique determination of several coefficients in a fractional diffusion(-wave) equation by a single measurement

We consider the inverse problem of determining different type of information about a diffusion process, described by ordinary or fractional diffusion equations stated on a bounded domain, like the density of the medium or the velocity field associated with the moving quantities from a single boundary measurement. This properties will be associated with some general class of time independent coefficients that we recover from a single Neumann boundary measurement, on some parts of the boundary, of the solution of our diffusion equation with a suitable boundary input, located on some parts of the boundary.

Reconstruction and stable recovery of source terms and coefficients appearing in diffusion equations

We consider the inverse source problem of determining a source term depending on both time and space variable for fractional and classical diffusion equations in a cylindrical domain from boundary measurements. With suitable boundary conditions we prove that some class of source terms which are independent of one space direction, can be reconstructed from boundary measurements. Actually, we prove that this inverse problem is well-posed. We establish also some results of Lipschitz stability for the recovery of source terms which we apply to the stable recostruction of time-dependent coefficients.

Inverse Problems of Determining Sources of the Fractional Partial Differential Equations

In this chapter, we mainly review theoretical results on inverse source problems for diffusion equations with the Caputo time-fractional derivatives of order $α\in(0,1)$. Our survey covers the following types of inverse problems: 1. determination of time-dependent functions in interior source terms 2. determination of space-dependent functions in interior source terms 3. determination of time-dependent functions appearing in boundary conditions

Inverse Problems of Determining Parameters of the Fractional Partial Differential Equations

When considering fractional diffusion equation as model equation in analyzing anomalous diffusion processes, some important parameters in the model related to orders of the fractional derivatives, are often unknown and difficult to be directly measured, which requires one to discuss inverse problems of identifying these physical quantities from some indirectly observed information of solutions. Inverse problems in determining these unknown parameters of the model are not only theoretically interesting, but also necessary for finding solutions to initial-boundary value problems and studying properties of solutions. This chapter surveys works on such inverse problems for fractional diffusion equations.

Inverse Problems of Determining Coefficients of the Fractional Partial Differential Equations

When considering fractional diffusion equation as model equation in analyzing anomalous diffusion processes, some important parameters in the model, for example, the orders of the fractional derivative or the source term, are often unknown, which requires one to discuss inverse problems to identify these physical quantities from some additional information that can be observed or measured practically. This chapter investigates several kinds of inverse coefficient problems for the fractional diffusion equation.

Observability inequalities for transport equations through Carleman estimates

We consider the transport equation $\ppp_t u(x,t) + H(t)\cdot \nabla u(x,t) = 0$ in $\OOO\times(0,T),$ where $T>0$ and $\OOO\subset \R^d $ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary $\ppp\OOO$. First, we prove a Carleman estimate for solutions of finite energy with piecewise continuous weight functions. Then, under a further condition which guarantees that the orbits of $H$ intersect $\ppp\OOO$, we prove an energy estimate which in turn yields an observability inequality. Our results are motivated by applications to inverse problems.

Inverse coefficient problems for a transport equation by local Carleman estimate

We consider the transport equation $\ppp_tu(x,t) + (H(x)\cdot \nabla u(x,t)) + p(x)u(x,t) = 0$ in $\OOO \times (0,T)$ where $\OOO \subset \R^n$ is a bounded domain, and discuss two inverse problems which consist of determining a vector-valued function $H(x)$ or a real-valued function $p(x)$ by initial values and data on a subboundary of $\OOO$. Our results are conditional stability of Hölder type in a subdomain $D$ provided that the outward normal component of $H(x)$ is positive on $\ppp D \cap \ppp\OOO$. The proofs are based on a Carleman estimate where the weight function depends on $H$.

Logarithmic Stability for Coefficients Inverse Problem of Coupled Schrödinger Equations

In this paper, we study an inverse coefficients problem for two coupled Schrödinger equations with an observation of one component of the solution. The observation is done in a nonempty open subset of the domain where the equations hold. A logarithmic type stability result is obtained. The main method is based on the Carleman estimate for coupled Schrödinger equations and coupled heatn equations, and the Fourier-Bros-Iagolnitzer transform.

Recovery of a potential in a fractional diffusion equation

We consider the determination of an unknown potential $q(x)$ form a fractional diffusion equation subject to overposed lateral boundary data. We show that this data allows recovery of two spectral sequences for the associated inverse Sturm-Liouville problem and these are sufficient to apply standard uniqueness results for this case. We also look at reconstruction methods and in particular examine the issue of stability of the solution with respect to the data. The outcome shows the inverse problem to be severely ill-conditioned and we consider the differences between the cases of fractional and of classical diffusion.

Unique continuation principle for the one-dimensional time-fractional diffusion equation

This paper deals with the unique continuation of solutions for a one-dimensional anomalous diffusion equation with Caputo derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$. Firstly, the uniqueness of solutions to a lateral Cauchy problem for the anomalous diffusion equation is given via the Theta function method, from which we further verify the unique continuation principle.

Carleman estimate for the Schrödinger equation and application to magnetic inverse problems

We prove that the stationary magnetic potential vector and the electrostatic potential entering the dynamic magnetic Schrödinger equation can be Lipschitz stably retrieved through finitely many local boundary measurements of the solution. The proof is by means of a specific global Carleman estimate for the Schrödinger equation, established in the first part of the paper.

Initial-boundary value problems for multi-term time-fractional diffusion equations with x-dependent coefficients

In this paper, we discuss an initial-boundary value problem (IBVP) for the multi-term time-fractional diffusion equation with x-dependent coefficients. By means of the Mittag-Leffler functions and the eigenfunction expansion, we reduce the IBVP to an equivalent integral equation to show the unique existence and the analyticity of the solution for the equation. Especially, in the case where all the coefficients of the time-fractional derivatives are non-negative, by the Laplace and inversion Laplace transforms, it turns out that the decay rate of the solution for long time is dominated by the lowest order of the time-fractional derivatives. Finally, as an application of the analyticity of the solution, the uniqueness of an inverse problem in determining the fractional orders in the multi-term time-fractional diffusion equations from one interior point observation is established.

Carleman estimate for linear viscoelasticity equations and an inverse source problem

We consider the linear system of viscoelasticity with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. First we prove a Carleman estimate with boundary values of solutions of viscoelasticity system. Since a solution $u$ under consideration is not assumed to have compact support, in the decoupling of the Lamé operator by introducing div $u$ and rot $u$, we have no boundary condition for them, so that we have to carry out arguments by a pseudodifferential operator. Second we apply the Carleman estimate to an inverse source problem of determining a spatially varying factor of the external source in the linear viscoelastitiy by extra Neumann data on the lateral subboundary over a sufficiently long time interval and establish the stability estimate.

On the maximum principle for a time-fractional diffusion equation

In this paper, we discuss the maximum principle for a time-fractional diffusion equation $$ \partial_t^αu(x,t) = \sum_{i,j=1}^n \partial_i(a_{ij}(x)\partial_j u(x,t)) + c(x)u(x,t) + F(x,t),\ t>0,\ x \in Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^n$$ with the Caputo time-derivative of the order $α\in (0,1)$ in the case of the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. Compared to the already published results, our findings have two important special features. First, we derive a maximum principle for a suitably defined weak solution in the fractional Sobolev spaces, not for the strong solution. Second, for the non-negative source functions $F = F(x,t)$ we prove the non-negativity of the weak solution to the problem under consideration without any restrictions on the sign of the coefficient $c=c(x)$ by the derivative of order zero in the spatial differential operator. Moreover, we prove the monotonicity of the solution with respect to the coefficient $c=c(x)$.

Theoretical stability in coefficient inverse problems for general hyperbolic equations with numerical reconstruction

In this article, we investigate the determination of the spatial component in the time-dependent second order coefficient of a hyperbolic equation from both theoretical and numerical aspects. By the Carleman estimates for general hyperbolic operators and an auxiliary Carleman estimate, we establish local Hölder stability with both partial boundary and interior measurements under certain geometrical conditions. For numerical reconstruction, we minimize a Tikhonov functional which penalizes the gradient of the unknown function. Based on the resulting variational equation, we design an iteration method which is updated by solving a Poisson equation at each step. One-dimensional prototype examples illustrate the numerical performance of the proposed iteration.

Carleman estimates for the time-fractional advection-diffusion equations and applications

In this article, we prove Carleman estimates for the generalized time-fractional advection-diffusion equations by considering the fractional derivative as perturbation for the first order time-derivative. As a direct application of the Carleman estimates, we show a conditional stability of a lateral Cauchy problem for the time-fractional advection-diffusion equation, and we also investigate the stability of an inverse source problem.

On time-fractional diffusion equations with space-dependent variable order

We investigate diffusion equations with time-fractional derivatives of space-dependent variable order. We examine the well-posedness issue and prove that the space-dependent variable order coefficient is uniquely determined among other coefficients of these equations, by the knowledge of a suitable time-sequence of partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps.
