Theoretical studies on the spin-charge dynamics in Kondo-lattice models

The Kondo-lattice model describes a typical spin-charge coupled system in which localized spins and itinerant electrons are strongly coupled via exchange interactions and exhibits a variety of long-wavelength magnetic orders originating from the nesting of Fermi surfaces. Recently, several magnetic materials that realize this model have been discovered experimentally, and they have turned out to exhibit rich topological magnetic phases including skyrmion crystals and hedgehog lattices. Our recent theoretical studies based on the large-scale spin-dynamics simulations have revealed several interesting nonequilibrium phenomena and excitation dynamics in the Kondo-lattice model, e.g., dynamical magnetic topology switching and peculiar spin-wave modes of the skyrmion crystals and the hedgehog lattices under irradiation with electromagnetic waves such as microwaves and light. These achievements are expected to open a new research field to explore novel nonequilibrium topological phenomena and related material functions of the spin-charge coupled magnets.

Fundamental Theory of Current-Induced Motion of Magnetic Skyrmions

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that appear in magnets with broken spatial inversion symmetry via competition between the (anti)ferromagnetic exchange interactions and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a magnetic field. Their current-driven dynamics have been extensively studied aiming at spintronic applications. However, current-induced skyrmion motion exhibits diverse behaviors depending on various factors and conditions such as the type of skyrmion, driving mechanism, system geometry, direction of applied current, and type of the magnet. While this variety attracts enormous research interest of fundamental science and enriches their possibilities of technical applications, it is, at the same time, a source of difficulty and complexity that hinders their comprehensive understandings. In this article, we discuss fundamental and systematic theoretical descriptions of current-induced motion of skyrmions driven by the spin-transfer torque and the spin-orbit torque. Specifically, we theoretically describe the behaviors of current-driven skyrmions depending on the factors and conditions mentioned above by means of analyses using the Thiele equation. Furthermore, the results of the analytical theory are visually demonstrated and quantitatively confirmed by micromagnetic simulations. In particular, we discuss dependence of the direction and velocity of motion on the type of skyrmion (Bloch type and Neel type) and its helicity, the system geometry (thin plate and nanotrack), the direction of applied current (length and width direction of the nanotrack) and its spin-polarization orientation, and the type of magnet (ferromagnet and antiferromagnet). The comprehensive theory provided by this article is expected to contribute significantly to research on the manipulation and control of magnetic skyrmions by electric currents for future spintronics applications.

Modeling and Physics of Multiferroic Perovskite Manganites

A new type of multiferroicity was experimentally discovered in 2003 in a perovskite manganite TbMnO$_3$ where its ferroelectricity is induced by cycloidally ordered Mn spins. Susequently, such spin-cycloid multiferroic phase was also discovered in $R$MnO$_3$ with other rare-earth ions $R$=Dy, Eu$_{1-x}$Y$_x$, Tb$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$, etc. In this class of materials, the magnetism and ferroelectricity are inseparably coupled, and resulting strong magnetoelectric coupling enables us to control/manipulate the electricity (magnetism) by magnetic (electric) fields. Moreover, many interesting magnetoelectric phenomena due to their cross correlation have been discovered. In this article, we discuss a microscopic theoretical model for $R$MnO$_3$ constructed by taking into account their precise electronic and lattice structures and overview the theoretical works based on this model which elucidated rich magnetoelectric phenomena of $R$MnO$_3$. The perovskite manganites are not only the first-discovered spin-spiral multiferroic materials but also a typical class of materials that exhibits most of the magnetoelectric phenomena manifested in many other multiferroics. Therefore, the comprehensive understanding of $R$MnO$_3$ directly leads to the clarification of universal physics of magnetoelectric phenomena in multiferroic materials.

Machine-Learning Detection of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transitions

The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition is a typical topological phase transition defined between binding and unbinding states of vortices and antivortices, which is not accompanied by spontaneous symmetry breaking. It is known that the BKT transition is difficult to detect from thermodynamic quantities such as specific heat and magnetic susceptibility because of the absence of anomaly in free energy and significant finite-size effects. Therefore, methods based on statistical mechanics which are commonly used to discuss phase transitions cannot be easily applied to the BKT transition. In recent years, several attempts to detect the BKT transition using machine-learning methods based on image recognition techniques have been reported. However, it has turned out that the detection is difficult even for machine learning methods because of the absence of trivial order parameters and symmetry breaking. Most of the methods proposed so far require prior knowledge about the models and/or preprocessing of input data for feature engineering, which is problematic in terms of the general applicability. In this article, we introduce recent development of the machine-learning methods to detect the BKT transitions in several spin models. Specifically, we demonstrate the success of two new methods named temperature-identification method and phase-classification method for detecting the BKT transitions in the q-state clock model and the XXZ model. This progress is expected to sublimate the machine-learning-based study of spin models for exploring new physics beyond simple benchmark test.

Nonreciprocal transport in a room-temperature chiral magnet

Chiral magnets under broken time-reversal symmetry can give rise to rectification of moving electrons, called nonreciprocal transport. Several mechanisms, such as the spin-fluctuation-induced chiral scattering and asymmetry in the electronic band dispersion with and without the relativistic spin-orbit interaction, have been proposed, but clear identification as well as theoretical description of these different contributions are desired for full understanding of nonreciprocal transport phenomena. Here, we investigate a chiral magnet Co8Zn9Mn3 and find the nonreciprocal transport phenomena consisting of different contributions with distinct field- and temperature-dependence across the magnetic phase diagram over a wide temperature range including above room-temperature. We successfully separate the nonreciprocal resistivity into different components and identify their mechanisms as spin-fluctuation-induced chiral scattering and band asymmetry in a single material with the help of theoretical calculations.

Multiple Floquet Chern insulator phases in the spin-charge coupled triangular-lattice ferrimagnet: Crucial role of higher-order terms in the high-frequency expansion

We study the effects of photoirradiation with circularly polarized light on the Dirac half-metal state induced by the ferrimagnetic order in a triangular Kondo-lattice model. Our analysis based on the Floquet theory reveals that two types of Floquet Chern insulator phases appear as photoinduced nonequilibrium steady states and that these two phases can be experimentally detected and distinguished by measurements of the Hall conductivity. It is elucidated that these rich nonequilibrium topological phases come from higher-order terms in the high-frequency expansion called Brillouin-Wigner expansion, which is in striking contrast to usually discussed Floquet Chern insulator phases originating from the lowest-order terms of the expansion. So far, the lattice electron models on simple non-multipartite lattices such as triangular lattices and square lattices have not been regarded as targets of the Floquet engineering because the lowest-order terms of the high-frequency expansion for Floquet effective Hamiltonians cancel each other to vanish in these systems. Our findings of the Floquet Chern insulator phases in a triangular Kondo-lattice model are expected to expand the range of potential models and even materials targeted by the Floquet engineering.

Bimerons create bimerons: proliferation and aggregation induced by currents and magnetic fields

The aggregation of topological spin textures at nano and micro scales has practical applications in spintronic technologies. Here, the authors report the in-plane current-induced proliferation and aggregation of bimerons in a bulk chiral magnet. It is found that the spin-transfer torques can induce the proliferation and aggregation of bimerons only in the presence of an appropriate out-of-plane magnetic field. It is also found that a relatively small damping and a relatively large non-adiabatic spin-transfer torque could lead to more pronounced bimeron proliferation and aggregation. Particularly, the current density should be larger than a certain threshold in order to trigger the proliferation; namely, the bimerons may only be driven into translational motion under weak current injection. Besides, the authors find that the aggregate bimerons could relax into a deformed honeycomb bimeron lattice with a few lattice structure defects after the current injection. The results are promising for the development of bio-inspired spintronic devices that use a large number of aggregate bimerons. The findings also provide a platform for studying aggregation-induced effects in spintronic systems, such as the aggregation-induced lattice phase transitions.

Transformation of a cellular skyrmion to polyomino-like structures

Topological spin structures with transformable shapes may have potential implications on data storage and computation. Here, we demonstrate that a square cellular skyrmion on an artificial grid pinning pattern can be manipulated by programmed current pulses. We find that parallel short pulses could result in the elongation of the skyrmion mainly in the current direction, while parallel long pulses are able to induce the elongation in the direction perpendicular to the current due to the intrinsic skyrmion Hall effect. Consequently, a programmed sequence of parallel pulses could lead to the transformation of the skyrmion to I-, L-, and Z-shaped polyomino-like structures without affecting the topological charge. In addition, we find that orthogonal pulses could lead to the transformation to more complex polyomino-like structures, including the T-shaped and irregular ones. Particularly, when a small T-shaped structure is formed, the topological charge of the system is found to be non-integer due to incomplete compensation of local topological charge densities; however, the T-shaped structure is stable on the attractive pinning pattern. Our results offer an effective way to create polyomino-like spin structures toward functional applications.

Theory of collective excitations in the quadruple-$Q$ magnetic hedgehog lattices

Hedgehog and antihedgehog spin textures in magnets behave as emergent monopoles and antimonopoles, which give rise to astonishing transport and electromagnetic phenomena. Using the Kondo-lattice model in three dimensions, we theoretically study collective spin-wave excitation modes of magnetic hedgehog lattices which have recently been discovered in itinerant magnets such as MnSi1-xGex and SrFeO3. It is revealed that the spin-wave modes, which appear in the sub-terahertz regime, have dominant amplitudes localized at Dirac strings connecting hedgehog-antihedgehog pairs and are characterized by their translational oscillations. It is found that their spectral features sensitively depend on the number and configuration of the Dirac strings and, thus, can be exploited for identifying the topological phase transitions associated with the monopole-antimonopole pair annihilations.

Suppression of the skyrmion Hall effect in synthetic ferrimagnets with gradient magnetization

Magnetic skyrmions are promising building blocks for future spintronic devices. However, the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE) remains an obstacle for practical applications based on the in-line transport of skyrmions. Here, we numerically study the static properties and current-driven dynamics of synthetic ferrimagnetic skyrmions. Inspired by graded-index magnonics, we introduce a linear gradient of saturation magnetization (Ms) in the skyrmion-hosting sample, which effectively modulates the skyrmion Hall angle and suppresses the SkHE. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that ferrimagnetic skyrmions could exhibit greater susceptibility to the variation of Ms as compared to their ferromagnetic counterparts. The Thiele analysis is also applied to support the simulation results, which elucidates that the Ms gradient dynamically modifies the intrinsic normalized size of skyrmions, consequently impacting the SkHE. Our results pave the way to the graded-index skyrmionics, which offers novel insights for designing ferrimagnet-based skyrmionic devices.

Predicted Multiple Walker Breakdowns for Current-Driven Domain-Wall Motion in Antiferromagnets

We theoretically discover possible emergence of reentrant Walker breakdowns for current-driven domain walls in layered antiferromagnets in striking contrast to the unique Walker breakdown in ferromagnets. We reveal that the Lorentz contraction of domain-wall width in antiferromagnets gives rise to nonlinear current-dependence of the wall velocity and the predicted multiple Walker breakdowns. The dominant efficiency of the current-induced staggered spin-orbit torque over the spin-transfer torque to drive the domain-wall motion is also demonstrated. These findings are expected to be observed in synthetic antiferromagnets experimentally and provide an important contribution to the growing research field of antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Magnon-Skyrmion Hybrid Quantum Systems: Tailoring Interactions via Magnons

Coherent and dissipative interactions between different quantum systems are essential for the construction of hybrid quantum systems and the investigation of novel quantum phenomena. Here, we propose and analyze a magnon-skyrmion hybrid quantum system, consisting of a micromagnet and nearby magnetic skyrmions. We predict a strong coupling mechanism between the magnonic mode of the micromagnet and the quantized helicity degree of freedom of the skyrmion. We show that with this hybrid setup it is possible to induce magnon-mediated nonreciprocal interactions and responses between distant skyrmion qubits or between skyrmion qubits and other quantum systems like superconducting qubits. This work provides a quantum platform for the investigation of diverse quantum effects and quantum information processing with magnetic microstructures.

Proposed modified computational model for the amoeba-inspired combinatorial optimization machine

A single-celled amoeba can solve the traveling salesman problem through its shape-changing dynamics. In this paper, we examine roles of several elements in a previously proposed computational model of the solution-search process of amoeba and three modifications towards enhancing the solution-search preformance. We find that appropriate modifications can indeed significantly improve the quality of solutions. It is also found that a condition associated with the volume conservation can also be modified in contrast to the naive belief that it is indispensable for the solution-search ability of amoeba. A proposed modified model shows much better performance.

Global Rotation of Skyrmion Bags under Vertical Microwave Fields

Magnetic skyrmion bags are composite topological spin textures with arbitrary topological charges. Here, we computationally study the transient rotational motion of skyrmion bags, which is characterized by a global rotation of the inner skyrmions around the central point. Distinct from conventional rotational modes found in skyrmions, the observed rotation is a forced motion associated with the breathing mode induced solely by vertical microwave fields. The driving force behind this rotation originates from the interactions between outer and inner skyrmions, with the angular velocity determined by the phase difference resulting from their asynchronous breathing behaviors. It is also found that skyrmion bags with larger skyrmion numbers are more conducive to the occurrence of the rotation. Our results are useful for understanding the cluster dynamics of complex topological spin textures driven by dynamic fields.

Chiral Skyrmions Interacting with Chiral Flowers

The chiral nature of active matter plays an important role in the dynamics of active matter interacting with chiral structures. Skyrmions are chiral objects, and their interactions with chiral nanostructures can lead to intriguing phenomena. Here, we explore the random-walk dynamics of a thermally activated chiral skyrmion interacting with a chiral flower-like obstacle in a ferromagnetic layer, which could create topology-dependent outcomes. It is a spontaneous mesoscopic order-from-disorder phenomenon driven by the thermal fluctuations and topological nature of skyrmions that exists only in ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic systems. The interactions between the skyrmions and chiral flowers at finite temperatures can be utilized to control the skyrmion position and distribution without applying any external driving force or temperature gradient. The phenomenon that thermally activated skyrmions are dynamically coupled to chiral flowers may provide a new way to design topological sorting devices.

Laminar and transiently disordered dynamics of a magnetic skyrmion pipe flow

The world is full of fluids that flow. The fluid nature of flowing skyrmionic quasiparticles is of fundamental physical interest and plays an essential role in the transport of many skyrmions. Here, we report the laminar and transiently disordered dynamic behaviors of many magnetic skyrmions flowing in a pipe channel. The skyrmion flow driven by a uniform current may show a lattice structural transition. The skyrmion flow driven by a non-uniform current shows a dynamically varying lattice structure. A large uniform current could result in the compression of skyrmions toward the channel edge, leading to the transition of the skyrmion pipe flow into an open-channel flow with a free surface. Namely, the width of the skyrmion flow could be adjusted by the driving current. Skyrmions on the free surface may form a single shear layer adjacent to the main skyrmion flow. In addition, although we focus on the skyrmion flow dynamics in a clean pipe channel without any pinning or defect effect, we also show that a variation of magnetic anisotropy in the pipe channel could lead to more complicated skyrmion flow dynamics and pathlines. Our results reveal the fluid nature of skyrmionic quasiparticles that may motivate future research on the complex flow physics of magnetic textures.

Handwritten Digit Recognition by Spin Waves in a Skyrmion Reservoir

By performing numerical simulations for the handwritten digit recognition task, we demonstrate that a magnetic skyrmion lattice confined in a thin-plate magnet possesses high capability of reservoir computing. We obtain a high recognition rate of more than 88%, higher by about 10% than a baseline taken as the echo state network model. We find that this excellent performance arises from enhanced nonlinearity in the transformation which maps the input data onto an information space with higher dimensions, carried by interferences of spin waves in the skyrmion lattice. Because the skyrmions require only application of static magnetic field instead of nanofabrication for their creation in contrast to other spintronics reservoirs, our result consolidates the high potential of skyrmions for application to reservoir computing devices.

Reversible magnetic domain reorientation induced by magnetic field pulses with fixed direction

Nanoscale magnetic domains with controllable configurations could be used for classical and quantum applications, where the switching of magnetization configurations is an essential operation for information processing. Here, we report that the magnetic domain reorientation in a notched ferromagnetic nanotrack can be realized and effectively controlled by applying uniform magnetic field pulses in a fixed in-plane direction perpendicular to the nanotrack. Our micromagnetic simulation results show that the configurations of magnetic domains in the notched nanotrack can be switched between a head-to-head state and a tail-to-tail state in a reversible manner driven by magnetic field pulses, while it is unnecessary to reverse the direction of the magnetic field. Such a unique magnetic domain reorientation dynamics is found to depend on magnetic parameters and nanotrack geometries. The reorientation dynamics of magnetic domains also depends on the strength and length of the applied magnetic field pulse. In addition, we point out that the notches at the center of the nanotrack play an important role for the stabilization of the head-to-head and tail-to-tail states during the magnetic domain reorientation. We also qualitatively explain the field-induced reorientation phenomenon with a simplified two-dimensional macrospin model. Our results may make it possible to build spintronic devices driven by a fixed magnetic field. Our findings may also motivate future studies to investigate the classical and quantum applications based on nanoscale magnetic domains.
