Second Law of Thermodynamics with Discrete Quantum Feedback Control

A new thermodynamic inequality is derived which leads to the maximum work that can be extracted from multi-heat baths with the assistance of discrete quantum feedback control. The maximum work is determined by the free-energy difference and a generalized mutual information content between the thermodynamic system and the feedback controller. This maximum work can exceed that in conventional thermodynamics and, in the case of a heat cycle with two heat baths, the heat efficiency can be greater than that of the Carnot cycle. The consistency of our results with the second law of thermodynamics is ensured by the fact that work is needed for information processing of the feedback controller.

Knots in a Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

We show that knots of spin textures can be created in the polar phase of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate, and discuss experimental schemes for their generation and probe, together with their lifetime.

Topological Winding and Unwinding in Metastable Bose-Einstein Condensates

Topological winding and unwinding in a quasi-one-dimensional metastable Bose-Einstein condensate are shown to be manipulated by changing the strength of interaction or the frequency of rotation. Exact diagonalization analysis reveals that quasidegenerate states emerge spontaneously near the transition point, allowing a smooth crossover between topologically distinct states. On a mean-field level, the transition is accompanied by formation of grey solitons, or density notches, which serve as an experimental signature of this phenomenon.

Density-Matrix Renormalization Group Study of Trapped Imbalanced Fermi Condensates

The density-matrix renormalization group is employed to investigate a harmonically-trapped imbalanced Fermi condensate based on a one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model. The obtained density profile shows a flattened population difference of spin-up and spin-down components at the center of the trap, and exhibits phase separation between the condensate and unpaired majority atoms for a certain range of the interaction and population imabalance $P$. The two-particle density matrix reveals that the sign of the order parameter changes periodically, demonstrating the realization of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase. The minority spin atoms contribute to the quasi-condensate up to at least $P \simeq 0.8$. Possible experimental situations to test our predictions are discussed.

Accuracy matrix in generalized simultaneous measurement of a qubit system

We formulate the accuracy of quantum measurement for a qubit system in terms of a 3 by 3 matrix. This matrix, which we refer to as the accuracy matrix, can be calculated from a positive operator-valued measure (POVM) corresponding to the quantum measurement. Based on the accuracy matrix, we derive new trade-off relations between the measurement accuracy of two or three noncommuting observables of a qubit system. These trade-off relations offer a quantitative information-theoretic representation of Bohr's principle of complementarity. They can be interpreted as the uncertainty relations between measurement errors in simultaneous measurements, and also as the trade-off relations between the measurement error and back-action of measurement. A no-cloning inequality is derived from the trade-off relations. Furthermore, our formulation and the obtained results can be applied to analyze quantum state tomography. We also show that the accuracy matrix is closely related to the maximum-likelihood estimation and the Fisher information matrix for a finite number of samples; the accuracy matrix tells us how accurately we can estimate the probability distributions of observables of an unknown state by quantum measurement.

Upper bound on our knowledge about noncommuting observables for a qubit system

A trade-off relation on our knowledge about two noncommuting observables of a qubit system in simultaneous measurement is formulated. The obtained inequality offers a quantitative information-theoretic representation of Bohr's principle of complementarity, and can be interpreted as a trade-off relation on the asymptotic accuracy of the maximum-likelihood estimation of the probability distributions of observables.

Stabilization of a Bose-Einstein droplet by hyperfine Rabi oscillations

A self-trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is shown to be stabilized in two-dimensional free space by Rabi oscillations between two hyperfine states which make an effective interatomic interaction oscillate in time. The stabilization mechanism is elucidated by using a two-component Gross-Pitaevskii equation combined with a variational analysis. The parameter regime of stability is investigated.

Jarzynski Equality with Maxwell's Demon

We propose a new thermodynamic equality and several inequalities concerning the relationship between work and information for an isothermal process with Maxwell's demon. Our approach is based on the formulation a la Jarzynski of the thermodynamic engine and on the quantum information-theoretic characterization of the demon. The lower bound of each inequality, which is expressed in terms of the information gain by the demon and the accuracy of the demon's measurement, gives the minimum work that can be performed on a single heat bath in an isothermal process. These results are independent of the state of the demon, be it in thermodynamic equilibrium or not.

Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a quenched ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate

The spin vortices are shown to be created through the Kibble-Zurek (KZ) mechanism in a quantum phase transition of a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate, when the applied magnetic field is quenched below a critical value. It is shown that the magnetic correlation functions have finite correlation lengths, and magnetizations at widely separated positions grow in random directions, resulting in spin vortices. We numerically confirm the scaling law that the winding number of spin vortices is proportional to the square root of the length of the closed path, and for slow quench, proportional to $τ_{\rm Q}^{-1/6}$ with $τ_{\rm Q}$ being the quench time. The relation between the spin conservation and the KZ mechanism is discussed.

Probabilistic reversing operation with fidelity and purity gain for macroscopic quantum superposition

It is shown that a large class of weak disturbances on macroscopic quantum superpositions can be canceled by a probabilistic reversing operation on the system. We illustrate this for spin systems undergoing an Ising-type interaction with the environment and demonstrate that both the fidelity to the original state and the purity of the amended state can simultaneously be increased by the reversing operation. A possible experimental scheme to implement our scheme is discussed.

Spontaneous Circulation in Ground-State Spinor Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

We report on a study of the spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. By solving the non-local Gross-Pitaevskii equations for this system, we find three ground-state phases. Moreover, we show that a substantial orbital angular momentum accompanied by chiral symmetry breaking emerges spontaneously in a certain parameter regime. We predict that all these phases can be observed in the spin-1 $^{87}$Rb condensate by changing the number of atoms or the trap frequency.

Can Spinor Dipolar Effects be Observed in Bose-Einstein Condensates?

Weak dipolar effects in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) have recently been predicted to develop spin textures. However, observation of these effects requires magnetic field as low as $\sim 10 μ$G for spin-1 alkali BECs, so that they are not washed out by the Zeeman effect. We present a scheme to observe the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in alkali BECs under a realistic magnetic field of $\sim 100$ mG. Our scheme enables us to extract genuine dipolar effects and should apply also to $^{52}$Cr BECs.

Topological defect formation in quenched ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the dynamics of the quantum phase transition of a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate from the polar phase to the broken-axisymmetry phase by changing magnetic field, and find the spontaneous formation of spinor domain walls followed by the creation of polar-core spin vortices. We also find that the spin textures depend very sensitively on the initial noise distribution, and that an anisotropic and colored initial noise is needed to reproduce the Berkeley experiment [Sadler et al., Nature 443, 312 (2006)]. The dynamics of vortex nucleation and the number of created vortices depend also on the manner in which the magnetic field is changed. We point out an analogy between the formation of spin vortices from domain walls in a spinor BEC and that of vortex-antivortex pairs from dark solitons in a scalar BEC.

Circuit analysis of quantum measurement

We develop a circuit theory that enables us to analyze quantum measurements on a two-level system and on a continuous-variable system on an equal footing. As a measurement scheme applicable to both systems, we discuss a swapping state measurement which exchanges quantum states between the system and the measuring apparatus before the apparatus meter is read out. This swapping state measurement has an advantage in gravitational-wave detection over contractive state measurement in that the postmeasurement state of the system can be set to a prescribed one, regardless of the outcome of the measurement.

Symmetry Breaking in Bose-Einstein Condensates

A gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) offers an ideal testing ground for studying symmetry breaking, because a trapped BEC system is in a mesoscopic regime, and situations exist under which symmetry breaking may or may not occur. Investigating this problem can explain why mean-field theories have been so successful in elucidating gaseous BEC systems and when many-body effects play a significant role. We substantiate these ideas in four distinct situations: namely, soliton formation in attractive BECs, vortex nucleation in rotating BECs, spontaneous magnetization in spinor BECs, and spin texture formation in dipolar BECs.

Broken axisymmetry phase of a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate

A spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a certain magnetic field exhibits a broken-axisymmetry phase in which the magnetization tilts against the applied magnetic field due to the competition between ferromagnetism and linear and quadratic Zeeman effects. The Bogoliubov analysis shows that in this phase two Goldstone modes associated with U(1) and SO(2) symmetry breakings exist, in which phonons and magnons are coupled to restore the two broken symmetries.

Stability analysis for $n$-component Bose-Einstein condensate

We derive the dynamic and thermodynamic stability conditions for dilute multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). These stability conditions, generalized for $n$-component BECs, are found to be equivalent and are shown to be consistent with the phase diagrams of two- and three-component condensates that are derived from energetic arguments.

Fragmentation of Bose-Einstein Condensates

We present the theory of bosonic systems with multiple condensates, unifying disparate models which are found in the literature, and discuss how degeneracies, interactions, and symmetries conspire to give rise to this unusual behavior. We show that as degeneracies multiply, so do the types of fragmentation, eventually leading to strongly correlated states with no trace of condensation.
