Reversible quantum measurement with arbitrary spins

We propose a physically reversible quantum measurement of an arbitrary spin-s system using a spin-j probe via an Ising interaction. In the case of a spin-1/2 system (s=1/2), we explicitly construct a reversing measurement and evaluate the degree of reversibility in terms of fidelity. The recovery of the measured state is pronounced when the probe has a high spin (j>1/2), because the fidelity changes drastically during the reversible measurement and the reversing measurement. We also show that the reversing measurement scheme for a spin-1/2 system can serve as an experimentally feasible approximate reversing measurement for a high-spin system (s>1/2). If the interaction is sufficiently weak, the reversing measurement can recover a cat state almost deterministically in spite of there being a large fidelity change.

Critical fluctuations in a soliton formation of attractive Bose-Einstein condensates

We employ mean-field, Bogoliubov, and many-body theories to study critical fluctuations in position and momentum of a Bose-Einstein condensate whose translation symmetry is spontaneously broken due to attractive interactions. In a homogeneous system, the many-body ground state of the symmetry-preserving Hamiltonian is very fragile against superposition of low-lying states, while mean-field theory predicts a stable bright soliton which spontaneously breaks translation symmetry. We show that weak symmetry-breaking perturbations cause the translation-symmetric many-body ground state to cross over to a many-body bright soliton. We argue that the center-of-mass fluctuations in the soliton state arise primarily from the depletion of the condensate to translation modes. We develop an extended mean-field theory to analytically reproduce these results obtained by the exact diagonalization method.

Einstein--de Haas Effect in Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

The general properties of the order parameter for a dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensate are discussed based on symmetries of interactions. An initially spin-polarized dipolar condensate is shown to dynamically generate a non-singular vortex via spin-orbit interactions -- a phenomenon reminiscent of the Einstein--de Haas effect in ferromagnets.

Spin Decoherence in a Gravitational Field

We discuss a mechanism of spin decoherence in gravitation within the framework of general relativity. The spin state of a particle moving in a gravitational field is shown to decohere due to the curvature of spacetime. As an example, we analyze a particle going around a static spherically-symmetric object.

Diagnostics for the ground state phase of a spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate

We propose a method to determine the singlet-pair energy of a spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). By preparing the initial populations in the magnetic sublevels 0, 2, -2 with appropriate relative phases, we can obtain the coefficient of the spin singlet-pair term from the spin exchange dynamics. This method is suitable for hyperfine states with short lifetimes, since only the initial change in the population of each magnetic sublevel is needed. This method therefore enables the determination of the ground state phase of a spin-2 87Rb BEC at zero magnetic field, which is considered to lie in the immediate vicinity of the boundary between the antiferromagnetic and cyclic phases. We also show that the initial state in which relative phases are controlled can be prepared by Raman processes.

Nambu-Goldstone Mode in a Rotating Dilute Bose-Einstein Condensate

The Nambu-Goldstone mode, associated with vortex nucleation in a harmonically confined, two-dimensional dilute Bose-Einstein condensate, is identified with the lowest-lying envelope of octupole-mode branches, which are separated from each other by the admixture of quadrupolar excitations. As the vortex approaches the center of the condensate and the system's axisymmetry is restored, the Nambu-Goldstone mode becomes massive due to its coupling to higher rotational bands.

Spin textures in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate two kinds of coreless vortices with axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric configurations in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Starting from the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional in a rotating frame, we derive a nonlinear sigma model generalized to the two-component condensates. In terms of a pseudospin representation, an axisymmetric vortex and a nonaxisymmetric one correspond to spin textures referred to as a "skyrmion" and a "meron-pair", respectively. A variational method is used to investigate the dependence of the sizes of the stable spin textures on system parameters, and the optimized variational function is found to reproduce well the numerical solution. In the SU(2) symmetric case, the optimal skyrmion and meron-pair are degenerate and transform to each other by a rotation of the pseudospin. An external rf-field that couples coherently the hyperfine states of two components breaks the degeneracy in favor of the meron-pair texture due to an effective transverse pseudomagnetic field. The difference between the intracomponent and intercomponent interactions yields a longitudinal pseudomagnetic field and a ferromagnetic or an antiferromagnetic pseudospin interaction, leading to a meron-pair texture with an anisotropic distribution of vorticity.

Vortices in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates

We review the topic of quantized vortices in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates of dilute atomic gases, with an emphasis on that in two-component condensates. First, we review the fundamental structure, stability and dynamics of a single vortex state in a slowly rotating two-component condensates. To understand recent experimental results, we use the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations and the generalized nonlinear sigma model. An axisymmetric vortex state, which was observed by the JILA group, can be regarded as a topologically trivial skyrmion in the pseudospin representation. The internal, coherent coupling between the two components breaks the axisymmetry of the vortex state, resulting in a stable vortex molecule (a meron pair). We also mention unconventional vortex states and monopole excitations in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. Next, we discuss a rich variety of vortex states realized in rapidly rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We introduce a phase diagram with axes of rotation frequency and the intercomponent coupling strength. This phase diagram reveals unconventional vortex states such as a square lattice, a double-core lattice, vortex stripes and vortex sheets, all of which are in an experimentally accessible parameter regime. The coherent coupling leads to an effective attractive interaction between two components, providing not only a promising candidate to tune the intercomponent interaction to study the rich vortex phases but also a new regime to explore vortex states consisting of vortex molecules characterized by anisotropic vorticity. A recent experiment by the JILA group vindicated the formation of a square vortex lattice in this system.

Spontaneous magnetization and structure formation in a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate

Motivated by recent experiments involving the non-destructive imaging of magnetization of a spin-1 87Rb Bose gas (Higbie et al., cond-mat/0502517), we address the question of how the spontaneous magnetization of a ferromagnetic BEC occurs in a spin-conserving system. Due to competition between the ferromagnetic interaction and the total spin conservation, various spin structures such as staggered magnetic domains, and helical and concentric ring structures are formed, depending on the geometry of the trapping potential.

Nonunitary quantum circuit

A quantum circuit is generalized to a nonunitary one whose constituents are nonunitary gates operated by quantum measurement. It is shown that a specific type of one-qubit nonunitary gates, the controlled-NOT gate, as well as all one-qubit unitary gates constitute a universal set of gates for the nonunitary quantum circuit, without the necessity of introducing ancilla qubits. A reversing measurement scheme is used to improve the probability of successful nonunitary gate operation. A quantum NAND gate and Abrams-Lloyd's nonlinear gate are analyzed as examples. Our nonunitary circuit can be used to reduce the qubit overhead needed to ensure fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Symmetry Breaking and Enhanced Condensate Fraction in a Matter-Wave Bright Soliton

An exact diagonalization study reveals that a matter-wave bright soliton and the Goldstone mode are simultaneously created in a quasi-one-dimensional attractive Bose-Einstein condensate by superpositions of quasi-degenerate low-lying many-body states. Upon formation of the soliton the maximum eigenvalue of the single-particle density matrix increases dramatically, indicating that a fragmented condensate converts into a single condensate as a consequence of the breaking of translation symmetry.

Spin decoherence by spacetime curvature

A decoherence mechanism caused by spacetime curvature is discussed. The spin state of a particle is shown to decohere if only the particle moves in a curved spacetime. In particular, when a particle is near the event horizon of a black hole, an extremely rapid spin decoherence occurs for an observer who is static in a Killing time, however slow the particle's motion is.

Vortex molecules in coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

A vortex molecule is predicted in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates whose internal hyperfine states are coupled coherently by an external field. A vortex in one component and that in the other are connected by a domain wall of the relative phase, constituting a "vortex molecule", which features a nonaxisymmetric (pseudo)spin texture with a pair of merons. The binding mechanism of the vortex molecule is discussed based on a generalized nonlinear sigma model and a variational ansatz. The anisotropy of vortex molecules is caused by the difference in the scattering lengths, yielding a distorted vortex-molecule lattice in fast rotating condensates.

Single-Shot Readout of Macroscopic Quantum Superposition State in a Superconducting Flux Qubit

Single-shot readout experiments were performed on the two lowest-energy states of a superconducting qubit with three Josephson junctions embedded in a superconducting loop. We measured the qubit state via switching current Isw of a current-biased dc-SQUID, a quantum detector surrounding the qubit loop. The qubit signals were measured in a small Isw regime of the SQUID, typically less than 100 nA, where the Isw distribution is particularly narrow. The obtained single-shot data indicate that the qubit state is readout, through the flux generated by the qubit persistent-current, as energy eigenstates rather than current eigenstates.

Bose-Einstein droplet in free space

We show that a droplet of a Bose-Einstein condensate can be dynamically stabilized in free space by rapid oscillations of interatomic interactions between attractive and repulsive through, e.g., the Feshbach resonance. Energy dissipation, which is present in realistic situations, is found to play a crucial role to suppress dynamical instabilities inherent in nonlinear nonequilibrium systems.

Bloch Structures in a Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate

A rotating Bose-Einstein condensate is shown to exhibit a Bloch band structure without the need of periodic potential. Vortices enter the condensate by a mechanism similar to the Bragg reflection, if the frequency of a rotating drive or the strength of interaction is adiabatically changed. A localized state analogous to a gap soliton in a periodic system is predicted near the edge of the Brillouin zone.
