Comments on Short Multiplets in Superconformal Algebras

The problem of classifying all short multiplets of superconformal algebras still seems to be an open question. A generic short multiplet is non-unitary, which nevertheless is of interest in various contexts. Even if one is interested in unitarity theories only, non-unitary short multiplets are of use in the analysis of (super)conformal blocks. The classification problem is mathematically formulated in terms of the representation theory of parabolic Verma modules, whose theory is known to be more challenging than that of more standard Verma modules associated with the Borel subalgebra. We comment on some recent developments of the representation theory, which could be of help in solving the classification problem.

Is Trans-Planckian Censorship a Swampland Conjecture?

During an accelerated expansion of the Universe, quantum fluctuations of sub-Planckian size can be stretched outside the horizon and be regarded effectively classical. Recently, it has been conjectured that such horizon-crossing of trans-Planckian modes never happens inside theories of quantum gravity (the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture, TCC). We point out several conceptual problems of this conjecture, which is in itself formulated as a statement on the restriction of possible scenarios in a theory: by contrast a standard swampland conjecture is a restriction of possible theories in the landscape of the quantum gravity. We emphasize the concept of swampland universality, i.e. that a swampland conjecture constrains any possible scenario in a given effective field theory. In order to illustrate the problems clearly we introduce several versions of the conjecture, where TCC condition is imposed differently to scenarios realizable in a given theory. We point out that these different versions of the conjecture lead to observable differences: a TCC violation in another Universe can exclude a theory, and such reduction of the landscape restricts possible predictions in our Universe. Our analysis raises the question of whether or not the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture can be regarded as a swampland conjecture concerning the existence of UV completion.

Relating 't Hooft Anomalies of 4d Pure Yang-Mills and 2d $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ Model

It has recently been shown that a center-twisted compactification of the four-dimensional pure $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on a three-torus gives rise to the two-dimensional $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$-model on a circle with a flavor-twisted boundary condition. We verify the consistency of this statement non-perturbatively at theta angle $θ=π$, in terms of the mixed 't Hooft anomalies for flavor symmetries and the time-reversal symmetry. This provides further support for the approach to the confinement of four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory from the two-dimensional $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$-model.

Quintessence Axion Revisited in Light of Swampland Conjectures

We point out that the swampland conjectures, forbidding the presence of global symmetries and (meta-)stable de Sitter vacua within quantum gravity, pick up a dynamical axion for the electroweak SU(2) gauge theory as a natural candidate for the quintessence field. The potential energy of the electroweak axion provides an attractive candidate for the dark energy. We discuss constraints from the weak gravity conjecture, from the conjecture of no global symmetry, and from observations, which can be satisfied elegantly in a supersymmetric extension of the standard model.

Polology of Superconformal Blocks

We systematically classify all possible poles of superconformal blocks as a function of the scaling dimension of intermediate operators, for all superconformal algebras in dimensions three and higher. This is done by working out the recently-proven irreducibility criterion for parabolic Verma modules for classical basic Lie superalgebras. The result applies to correlators for external operators of arbitrary spin, and indicates presence of infinitely many short multiplets of superconformal algebras, most of which are non-unitary. We find a set of poles whose positions are shifted by linear in $\mathcal{N}$ for $\mathcal{N}$-extended supersymmetry. We find an interesting subtlety for 3d $\mathcal{N}$-extended superconformal algebra with $\mathcal{N}$ odd associated with odd non-isotropic roots. We also comment on further applications to superconformal blocks.

Gauge Theory And Integrability, III

We study two-dimensional integrable field theories from the viewpoint of the four-dimensional Chern-Simons-type gauge theory introduced recently. The integrable field theories are realized as effective theories for the four-dimensional theory coupled with two-dimensional surface defects, and we can systematically compute their Lagrangians and the Lax operators satisfying the zero-curvature condition. Our construction includes many known integrable field theories, such as Gross-Neveu models, principal chiral models with Wess-Zumino terms and symmetric-space coset sigma models. Moreover we obtain various generalization these models in a number of different directions, such as trigonometric/elliptic deformations, multi-defect generalizations and models associated with higher-genus spectral curves, many of which seem to be new.

From Swampland to Phenomenology and Back

Swampland conjectures are a set of proposed necessary conditions for a low-energy effective field theory to have a UV completion inside a theory of quantum gravity. Swampland conjectures have interesting phenomenological consequences, and conversely phenomenological considerations are useful guidelines in sharping our understanding of quantum gravity.

Is Gravity the Weakest Force?

It has recently been suggested that "gravity is the weakest force" in any theory with a suitable UV completion within quantum gravity. One formulation of this statement is the scalar weak gravity conjecture, which states that gravity is weaker than the force originating from scalar fields. We study the scalar weak gravity conjecture in de Sitter space, and discuss its low-energy consequences in light of the experimental searches for fifth forces and violations of the equivalence principle. We point out that some versions of the scalar weak gravity conjecture forbid the existence of very light scalar particles, such as the quintessence and axion-like particles. The absence of the quintessence field means that these versions of the scalar weak gravity conjecture are in phenomenological tension with the recently-proposed de Sitter swampland conjecture and its refinements. Some other versions of the scalar weak gravity conjecture escape these constraints, and could have interesting phenomenological consequences.

New T-duality for Chern-Simons Theory

It has recently pointed out that a four-dimensional analog of Chern-Simons theory provides an elegant framework for understanding integrable models with spectral parameters. The goal of this short note is to better understand the relation of this theory to the more standard three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory. We point out that two Chern-Simons theories, in four dimensions and three dimensions, are related by a novel T-duality in field theory. We then discuss this T-duality in string theory. Our T-duality prescription applies to a more general class of topological quantum field theories, producing mixed topological/holomorphic theories. This paper is motivated by the observation by C. Vafa.

Three-dimensional gauge theories with supersymmetry enhancement

We conjecture infrared emergent $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry for a class of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ $U(1)$ gauge theories coupled with a single chiral multiplet. One example is the case where $U(1)$ gauge group has the Chern-Simons level $-\frac{3}2$ and the chiral multiplet has gauge charge $+1$. Other examples are related to this example either by known dualities or rescaling the Abelian gauge field. We give three independent evidences for the conjecture: 1) exact match between the central charges of the $U(1)$ R-symmetry current and the $U(1)$ topological symmetry current, 2) semi-classical construction of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ stress-tensor multiplet, and 3) an IR duality between a direct product of the two copies of the 3d theory on the one hand, and an $\mathcal{N}=4$ theory obtained by gauging the diagonal $SU(2)$ flavor symmetry of the $T[SU(2)]$ theory, on the other. The duality in 3) follows from geometrical aspects of the 3d-3d correspondence.

Lens Generalisation of $τ$-functions for the Elliptic Discrete Painlevé Equation

We propose a new bilinear Hirota equation for $τ$-functions associated with the $E_8$ root lattice, that provides a "lens" generalisation of the $τ$-functions for the elliptic discrete Painlevé equation. Our equations are characterized by a positive integer $r$ in addition to the usual elliptic parameters, and involve a mixture of continuous variables with additional discrete variables, the latter taking values on the $E_8$ root lattice. We construct explicit $W(E_7)$-invariant hypergeometric solutions of this bilinear Hirota equation, which are given in terms of elliptic hypergeometric sum/integrals.

Phenomenological Consequences of the Refined Swampland Conjecture

We discuss phenomenological consequences of the recently-introduced refinements of the de Sitter swampland conjecture. The conjecture constraints the first and the second derivatives of the scalar potential in terms of two $O(1)$ constants $c$ and $c'$, leading to interesting constraints on particle phenomenology, especially inflationary model building. Our work can also be regarded as bottom-up constraints on the values of $c$ and $c'$.

Do We Live in the Swampland?

A low-energy effective theory is said to be in the swampland if it does not have any consistent UV completion inside a theory of quantum gravity. The natural question is if the standard model of particle physics, possibly with some minimal extensions, are in the swampland or not. We discuss this question in view of the recent swampland conjectures. We prove a no-go theorem concerning the modification of the Higgs sector. Moreover, we find that QCD axion is incompatible with the recent swampland conjectures, unless some sophisticated possibilities are considered. We discuss the implications of this result for spontaneous breaking of CP symmetry. We comment on dynamical supersymmetry breaking as well as the issue of multi-valuedness of the potential.

All-Order Volume Conjecture for Closed 3-Manifolds from Complex Chern-Simons Theory

We propose an extension of the recently-proposed volume conjecture for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds, to all orders in perturbative expansion. We first derive formulas for the perturbative expansion of the partition function of complex Chern-Simons theory around a hyperbolic flat connection, which produces infinitely-many perturbative invariants of the closed oriented 3-manifold. The conjecture is that this expansion coincides with the perturbative expansion of the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants at roots of unity $q=e^{2 πi/r}$ with $r$ odd, in the limit $r \to \infty$. We provide numerical evidence for our conjecture.

Oscillons from Pure Natural Inflation

We examine the oscillon formation in a recently proposed inflation model of the pure natural inflation, where the inflaton is an axion that couples to a strongly-coupled pure Yang-Mills theory. The plateau of the inflaton potential, which is favored by recent observations, drives the fragmentation of the inflaton and can produce spatially localized oscillons. We find that the oscillons are formed for F<~ O(0.1) M_{Pl}, with F the effective decay constant of the model. We also comment on observational implications of the oscillons.

Lens elliptic gamma function solution of the Yang-Baxter equation at roots of unity

We study the root of unity limit of the lens elliptic gamma function solution of the star-triangle relation, for an integrable model with continuous and discrete spin variables. This limit involves taking an elliptic nome to a primitive $rN$-th root of unity, where $r$ is an existing integer parameter of the lens elliptic gamma function, and $N$ is an additional integer parameter. This is a singular limit of the star-triangle relation, and at subleading order of an asymptotic expansion, another star-triangle relation is obtained for a model with discrete spin variables in $\mathbb{Z}_{rN}$. Some special choices of solutions of equation of motion are shown to result in well-known discrete spin solutions of the star-triangle relation. The saddle point equations themselves are identified with three-leg forms of "3D-consistent" classical discrete integrable equations, known as $Q4$ and $Q3_{(δ=0)}$. We also comment on the implications for supersymmetric gauge theories, and in particular comment on a close parallel with the works of Nekrasov and Shatashvili.

Tensor Modes in Pure Natural Inflation

We study tensor modes in pure natural inflation (arXiv:1706.08522), a recently-proposed inflationary model in which an axionic inflaton couples to pure Yang-Mills gauge fields. We find that the tensor-to-scalar ratio r is naturally bounded from below. This bound originates from the finiteness of the number of metastable branches of vacua in pure Yang-Mills theories. Details of the model can be probed by future cosmic microwave background experiments and improved lattice gauge theory calculations of the theta-angle dependence of the vacuum energy.
