Comments on Exchange Graphs in Cluster Algebras

An important problem in the theory of cluster algebras is to compute the fundamental group of the exchange graph. A non-trivial closed loop in the exchange graph, for example, generates a non-trivial identity for the classical and quantum dilogarithm functions. An interesting conjecture, partly motivated by dilogarithm functions, is that this fundamental group is generated by closed loops of mutations involving only two of the cluster variables. We present examples and counterexamples for this naive conjecture, and then formulate a better version of the conjecture for acyclic seeds.

Elliptic hypergeometric sum/integral transformations and supersymmetric lens index

We prove a pair of transformation formulas for multivariate elliptic hypergeometric sum/integrals associated to the $A_n$ and $BC_n$ root systems, generalising the formulas previously obtained by Rains. The sum/integrals are expressed in terms of the lens elliptic gamma function, a generalisation of the elliptic gamma function that depends on an additional integer variable, as well as a complex variable and two elliptic nomes. As an application of our results, we prove an equality between $S^1\times S^3/\mathbb{Z}_r$ supersymmetric indices, for a pair of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories related by Seiberg duality, with gauge groups $SU(n+1)$ and $Sp(2n)$. This provides one of the most elaborate checks of the Seiberg duality known to date. As another application of the $A_n$ integral, we prove a star-star relation for a two-dimensional integrable lattice model of statistical mechanics, previously given by the second author.

Gauge Theory and Integrability, II

Starting with a four-dimensional gauge theory approach to rational, elliptic, and trigonometric solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, we determine the corresponding quantum group deformations to all orders in $\hbar$ by deducing their RTT presentations. The arguments we give are a mix of familiar ones with reasoning that is more transparent from the four-dimensional gauge theory point of view. The arguments apply most directly for $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ and can be extended to all simple Lie algebras other than $\mathfrak{e}_8$ by taking into account the self-duality of some representations, the framing anomaly for Wilson operators, and the existence of quantum vertices at which several Wilson operators can end.

Gauge Theory and Integrability, I

Several years ago, it was proposed that the usual solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation associated to Lie groups can be deduced in a systematic way from four-dimensional gauge theory. In the present paper, we extend this picture, fill in many details, and present the arguments in a concrete and down-to-earth way. Many interesting effects, including the leading nontrivial contributions to the $R$-matrix, the operator product expansion of line operators, the framing anomaly, and the quantum deformation that leads from $\mathfrak{g}[[z]]$ to the Yangian, are computed explicitly via Feynman diagrams. We explain how rational, trigonometric, and elliptic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation arise in this framework, along with a generalization that is known as the dynamical Yang-Baxter equation.

Quantum Trilogy: Discrete Toda, Y-System and Chaos

We discuss a discretization of the quantum Toda field theory associated with a semisimple finite-dimensional Lie algebra or a tamely-laced infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebra $G$, generalizing the previous construction of discrete quantum Liouville theory for the case $G=A_1$. The model is defined on a discrete two-dimensional lattice, whose spatial direction is of length $L$. In addition we also find a "discretized extra dimension" whose width is given by the rank $r$ of $G$, which decompactifies in the large $r$ limit. For the case of $G=A_N$ or $A_{N-1}^{(1)}$, we find a symmetry exchanging $L$ and $N$ under appropriate spatial boundary conditions. The dynamical time evolution rule of the model is a quantizations of the so-called Y-system, and the theory can be well-described by the quantum cluster algebra. We discuss possible implications for recent discussions of quantum chaos, and comment on the relation with the quantum higher Teichmuller theory of type $A_N$.

Pure Natural Inflation

We point out that a simple inflationary model in which the axionic inflaton couples to a pure Yang-Mills theory may give the scalar spectral index (n_s) and tensor-to-scalar ratio (r) in complete agreement with the current observational data.

S duality and Framed BPS States via BPS Graphs

We study a realization of S dualities of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ class $\mathcal{S}$ theories based on BPS graphs. S duality transformations of the UV curve are explicitly expressed as a sequence of topological transitions of the graph, and translated into cluster transformations of the algebra associated to the dual BPS quiver. Our construction applies to generic class $\mathcal{S}$ theories, including those with non-maximal flavor symmetry, generalizing previous results based on higher triangulations. We study the the action of S duality on UV line operators, and show that it matches precisely with the mapping class group, by a careful analysis of framed wall-crossing. We comment on the implications of our results for the computation of three-manifold invariants via cluster partition functions.

Hyperbolic 3-manifolds and Cluster Algebras

We advocate the use of cluster algebras and their y-variables in the study of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We study hyperbolic structures on the mapping tori of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes of punctured surfaces, and show that cluster y-variables naturally give the solutions of the edge-gluing conditions of ideal tetrahedra. We also comment on the completeness of hyperbolic structures.

From 4d Yang-Mills to 2d $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model: IR problem and confinement at weak coupling

We study four-dimensional $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}^3=\mathbb{R} \times S^1_A \times S^1_B \times S^1_C$, with a twisted boundary condition by a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ center symmetry imposed on $S^1_B \times S^1_C$. This setup has no IR zero modes and hence is free from IR divergences which could spoil trans-series expansion for physical observables. Moreover, we show that the center symmetry is preserved at weak coupling regime. This is shown by first reducing the theory on $\mathbb{T}^2=S_A \times S_B$, to connect the model to the two-dimensional $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$-model. Then, we prove that the twisted boundary condition by the center symmetry for the Yang-Mills is reduced to the twisted boundary condition by the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ global symmetry of $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$. There are $N$ classical vacua, and fractional instantons connecting those $N$ vacua dynamically restore the center symmetry. We also point out the presence of singularities on the Borel plane which depend on the shape of the compactification manifold, and comment on its implications.

Decomposing Quantum Field Theories

Motivated by the question of exploring the "theory space" of quantum field theories, we review the concept of "decomposing" and "gluing" quantum field theories. We explain this in the context of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric domain walls inside four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories, where the latter arise from the 6d $(2,0)$ theory compactified on Riemann surfaces. We find that $S^3$ partition functions of the three-dimensional theories can be interpreted as partition functions of a three-dimensional topological quantum field theory.

BPS Graphs: From Spectral Networks to BPS Quivers

We define "BPS graphs" on punctured Riemann surfaces associated with $A_{N-1}$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$. BPS graphs provide a bridge between two powerful frameworks for studying the spectrum of BPS states: spectral networks and BPS quivers. They arise from degenerate spectral networks at maximal intersections of walls of marginal stability on the Coulomb branch. While the BPS spectrum is ill-defined at such intersections, a BPS graph captures a useful basis of elementary BPS states. The topology of a BPS graph encodes a BPS quiver, even for higher-rank theories and for theories with certain partial punctures. BPS graphs lead to a geometric realization of the combinatorics of Fock-Goncharov $N$-triangulations and generalize them in several ways.

Cluster-Enriched Yang-Baxter Equation from SUSY Gauge Theories

We propose a new generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation, where the R-matrix depends on cluster $y$-variables in addition to the spectral parameters. We point out that we can construct solutions to this new equation from the recently-found correspondence between Yang-Baxter equations and supersymmetric gauge theories. The $S^2$ partition function of a certain 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ quiver gauge theory gives an R-matrix, whereas its FI parameters can be identified with the cluster $y$-variables.

Comments on Determinant Formulas for General CFTs

We point out that the determinant formula for a parabolic Verma module plays a key role in the study of (super)conformal field theories and in particular their (super)conformal blocks. The determinant formula is known from the old work of Jantzen for bosonic conformal algebras, and we present a conjecture for superconformal algebras. The application of the formula includes derivation of the unitary bound and recursion relations for conformal blocks.

Determinant Formula for Parabolic Verma Modules of Lie Superalgebras

We prove a determinant formula for a parabolic Verma module of a Lie superalgebra, previously conjectured by the second author. Our determinant formula generalizes the previous results of Jantzen for a parabolic Verma module of a (non-super) Lie algebra, and of Kac concerning a (non-parabolic) Verma module for a Lie superalgebra. The resulting formula is expected to have a variety of applications in the study of higher-dimensional supersymmetric conformal field theories. We also discuss irreducibility criteria for the Verma module.

Recursion Relations for Conformal Blocks

In the context of conformal field theories in general space-time dimension, we find all the possible singularities of the conformal blocks as functions of the scaling dimension $Δ$ of the exchanged operator. In particular, we argue, using representation theory of parabolic Verma modules, that in odd spacetime dimension the singularities are only simple poles. We discuss how to use this information to write recursion relations that determine the conformal blocks. We first recover the recursion relation introduced in 1307.6856 for conformal blocks of external scalar operators. We then generalize this recursion relation for the conformal blocks associated to the four point function of three scalar and one vector operator. Finally we specialize to the case in which the vector operator is a conserved current.

Gauging and Decoupling in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities

One interesting feature of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories is that gauge-invariant operators can decouple by strong-coupling effects, leading to emergent flavor symmetries in the IR. The details of such decoupling, however, depends very delicately on the gauge group and matter content of the theory. We here systematically study the IR behavior of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD with $N_f$ flavors, for gauge groups $\mathrm{SU}(N_c), \mathrm{USp}(2N_c)$ and $\mathrm{SO}(N_c)$. We apply a combination of analytical and numerical methods, both to small values of $N_c, N_f$ and also to the Veneziano limit, where $N_c$ and $N_f$ are taken to be large with their ratio $N_f/N_c$ fixed. We highlight the role of the monopole operators and the interplay with Aharony-type dualities. We also discuss the effect of gauging continuous as well as discrete flavor symmetries, and the implications of our analysis to the classification of $1/4$--BPS co-dimension 2 defects of 6d $(2,0)$ theories.

Spectral sum rules for confining large-N theories

We consider asymptotically-free four-dimensional large-$N$ gauge theories with massive fermionic and bosonic adjoint matter fields, compactified on squashed three-spheres, and examine their regularized large-$N$ confined-phase spectral sums. The analysis is done in the limit of vanishing 't Hooft coupling, which is justified by taking the size of the compactification manifold to be small compared to the inverse strong scale $Λ^{-1}$. Our results motivate us to conjecture some universal spectral sum rules for these large $N$ gauge theories.
