Interband Effects of Magnetic Field on Hall Effects for Dirac Electrons in Bismuth

Hall effects are investigated for three-dimensional Dirac electrons as a model of bismuth alloys. It is found that there is unconventional contributions to the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ generated by the interband effects of a magnetic field. This phenomena is remarkable near the band-edge. The Hall coefficient exhibits two unexpected properties; a sharp peak at around the band-edges, and a drastic sign change in the band gap region. Implications of the present results to bismuth alloys are discussed.

Doublon-Holon Binding Effects on Mott Transitions in Two-Dimensional Bose Hubbard Model

A mechanism of Mott transitions in a Bose Hubbard model on a square lattice is studied, using a variational Monte Carlo method. Besides an onsite correlation factor, we introduce a four-body doublon-holon factor into the trial state, which considerably improves the variational energy and can appropriately describe a superfluid-insulator transition. Its essense consists in binding (and unbinding) of a doublon to a holon in a finite short range, identical with the cases of fermions. The features of this transition are qualitatively different from those of Brinkman-Rice-type transitions.

Characterization of two-dimensional fermionic insulating states

Inspired by the duality picture between superconductivity and insulator in two spatial dimension, we conjecture that the order parameter, suitable for characterizing 2D fermionic insulating state, is the disorder operator, usually known in the context of statistical transformation. Namely, the change of the phase of the disorder operator along a closed loop measures the particle density accommodating inside this loop. Thus, identifying this (doped) particle density with the dual counterpart of the magnetic induction in 2D SC, we can naturally introduce the disorder operator as the dual order parameter of 2D insulators. The disorder operator has a branch cut emitting from this ``vortex'' to the single infinitely far point. To test this conjecture against an arbitrary 2D lattice models, we have chosen this branch cut to be compatible with the periodic boundary condition and obtain a general form of its expectation value for non-interacting metal/insulator wavefunction, including gapped mean-field order wavefunction. Based on this expression, we observed analytically that it indeed vanishes for a wide class of band metals in the thermodynamic limit. In insulating states, on the other hand, it is quantified by the localization length or the real-valued gauge invariant 2-from dubbed as the quantum metric tensor.

Fermi Surface Reconstruction without Breakdown of Kondo Screening at Quantum Critical Point

Motivated by recent Hall-effect experiment in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, we study ground state properties of a Kondo lattice model in a two-dimensional square lattice using variational Monte Carlo method. We show that there are two types of phase transition, antiferromagnetic transition and topological one (Fermi surface reconstruction). In a wide region of parameters, these two transitions occur simultaneously without the breakdown of Kondo screening, accompanied by a discontinuous change of the Hall coefficient. This result is consistent with the experiment and gives a novel theoretical picture for the quantum critical point in heavy fermion systems.

Precise Control of Band Filling in NaxCoO2

Electronic properties of the sodium cobaltate NaxCoO2 are systematically studied through a precise control of band filling. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements are carried out on a series of high-quality polycrystalline samples prepared at 200 C with Na content in a wide range of 0.35 =< x =< 0.70. It is found that dramatic changes in electronic properties take place at a critical Na concentration x* that lies between 0.58 and 0.59, which separates a Pauli paramagnetic and a Curie-Weiss metals. It is suggested that at x* the Fermi level touches the bottom of the a1g band at the gamma point, leading to a crucial change in the density of states across x* and the emergence of a small electron pocket around the gamma point for x > x*.

Possibility of Gapless Spin Liquid State by One-dimensionalization

Motivated by the observation of a gapless spin liquid state in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, we analyze the anisotropic triangular lattice $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model with the resonating valence bond mean-field approximation. Paying attention to the small quasi-one-dimensional anisotropy of the material, we take an approach from one-dimensional (1D) chains coupled with frustrating zig-zag bonds. By calculating one-particle excitation spectra changing anisotropy parameter $J'/J$ from the decoupled 1D chains to the isotropic triangular lattice, we find almost gapless excitations in the wide range from the 1D limit. This one-dimensionalization by frustration is considered to be a candidate for the mechanism of the gapless spin liquid state.

Specific Heat and Superfluid Density for Possible Two Different Superconducting States in NaxCoO2.yH2O

Several thermodynamic measurements for the cobaltate superconductor, NaxCoO2.yH2O, have so far provided results inconsistent with each other. In order to solve the discrepancies, we microscopically calculate the temperature dependences of specific heat and superfluid density for this superconductor. We show that two distinct specific-heat data from Oeschler et al. and Jin et al. are reproduced, respectively, for the extended s-wave state and the p-wave state. Two different superfluid-density data are also reproduced for each case. These support our recent proposal of possible two different pairing states in this material. In addition, we discuss the experimentally proposed large residual Sommerfeld coefficient and extremely huge effective carrier mass.

Deformation of Electronic Structures Due to CoO6 Distortion and Phase Diagrams of NaxCoO2.yH2O

Motivated by recently reported experimental phase diagrams, we study the effects of CoO6 distortion on the electronic structure in NaxCoO2.yH2O. We construct the multiband tight-binding model by employing the LDA result. Analyzing this model, we show the deformation of band dispersions and Fermi-surface topology as functions of CoO2-layer thickness. Considering these results together with previous theoretical ones, we propose a possible schematic phase diagram with three successive phases: the extended s-wave superconductivity (SC), the magnetic order, and the spin-triplet SC phases when the Co valence number s is +3.4. A phase diagram with only one phase of spin-triplet SC is also proposed for the s=+3.5 case.

Mott Transitions and d-wave Superconductivity in Half-Filled-Band Hubbard Model on Square Lattice with Geometric Frustration

Mechanisms of Mott transitions and dx2-y2-wave superconductivity (SC) are studied in the half-filled-band Hubbard model on square lattices with a diagonal hopping term (t'), using an optimization (or correlated) variational Monte Carlo method. In the trial wave functions, a doublon-holon binding effect is introduced in addition to the onsite Gutzwiller projection. We mainly treat a d-wave singlet state and a projected Fermi sea. In both wave functions, first-order Mott transitions without direct relevance to magnetic orders take place at U=Uc approximately of the bandwidth for arbitrary t'/t. These transitions originate in the binding or unbinding of a doublon to a holon. d-wave SC appears in a narrow range immediately below Uc. The robust d-wave superconducting correlation are necessarily accompanied by enhanced antiferromagnetic correlation; the strength of SC becomes weak, as t'/t increases.

CoO2-Layer-Thickness Dependence of Magnetic Properties and Possible Two Different Superconducting States in NaxCoO2.yH2O

In order to understand the experimentally proposed phase diagrams of NaxCoO2.yH2O, we theoretically study the CoO2-layer-thickness dependence of magnetic and superconducting (SC) properties by analyzing a multiorbital Hubbard model using the random phase approximation. When the Co valence (s) is +3.4, we show that the magnetic fluctuation exhibits strong layer-thickness dependence where it is enhanced at finite (zero) momentum in the thicker (thinner) layer system. A magnetic order phase appears sandwiched by two SC phases, consistent with the experiments. These two SC phases have different pairing states where one is the singlet extended s-wave state and the other is the triplet p-wave state. On the other hand, only a triplet p-wave SC phase with dome-shaped behavior of Tc is predicted when s=+3.5, which is also consistent with the experiments. Controversial experimental results on the magnetic properties are also discussed.

Charge Fluctuations in Geometrically Frustrated Charge Ordering System

Effects of geometrical frustration in low-dimensional charge ordering systems are theoretically studied, mainly focusing on dynamical properties. We treat extended Hubbard models at quarter-filling, where the frustration arises from competing charge ordered patterns favored by different intersite Coulomb interactions, which are effective models for various charge transfer-type molecular conductors and transition metal oxides. Two different lattice structures are considered: (a) one-dimensional chain with intersite Coulomb interaction of nearest neighbor V_1 and that of next-nearest neighbor V_2, and (b) two-dimensional square lattice with V_1 along the squares and V_2 along one of the diagonals. From previous studies, charge ordered insulating states are known to be unstable in the frustrated region, i.e., V_1 \simeq 2V_2 for case (a) and V_1 \simeq V_2 for case (b), resulting in a robust metallic phase even when the interaction strenghs are strong. By applying the Lanczos exact diagonalization to finite-size clusters, we have found that fluctuations of different charge order patterns exist in the frustration-induced metallic phase, showing up as characteristic low energy modes in dynamical correlation functions. Comparison of such features between the two models are discussed, whose difference will be ascribed to the dimensionality effect. We also point out incommensurate correlation in the charge sector due to the frustration, found in one-dimensional clusters.

Theoretical Aspects of Charge Ordering in Molecular Conductors

Theoretical studies on charge ordering phenomena in quarter-filled molecular (organic) conductors are reviewed. Extended Hubbard models including not only the on-site but also the inter-site Coulomb repulsion are constructed in a straightforward way from the crystal structures, which serve for individual study on each material as well as for their systematic understandings. In general the inter-site Coulomb interaction stabilizes Wigner crystal-type charge ordered states, where the charge localizes in an arranged manner avoiding each other, and can drive the system insulating. The variety in the lattice structures, represented by anisotropic networks in not only the electron hopping but also in the inter-site Coulomb repulsion, brings about diverse problems in low-dimensional strongly correlated systems. Competitions and/or co-existences between the charge ordered state and other states are discussed, such as metal, superconductor, and the dimer-type Mott insulating state which is another typical insulating state in molecular conductors. Interplay with magnetism, e.g., antiferromagnetic state and spin gapped state for example due to the spin-Peierls transition, is considered as well. Distinct situations are pointed out: influences of the coupling to the lattice degree of freedom and effects of geometrical frustration which exists in many molecular crystals. Some related topics, such as charge order in transition metal oxides and its role in new molecular conductors, are briefly remarked.

Novel Charge Order and Superconductivity in Two-Dimensional Frustrated Lattice at Quarter Filling

Motivated by the various physical properties observed in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X, we study the ground state of extended Hubbard model on two-dimensional anisotropic triangular lattice at 1/4-filling with variational Monte Carlo method. It is shown that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction enhances the charge fluctuation and it induces the anomalous state such as charge-ordered metallic state and the triplet next-nearest-neighbor $f$-wave superconductivity. We discuss the relation to the real materials and propose the unified view of the family of $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X.

Mean-field study of charge order with long periodicity in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X

Charge ordering phenomenon in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X is studied by using 1/4-filled extended Hubbard model on an anisotropic triangular lattice through mean-field approximation. It is found that a metallic charge ordered state with 3-periodicity on lattices (3-fold type charge order) is realized in the realistic parameter region where the nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction V$_{ij}$ is nearly isotropic. This 3-fold state survives up to high temperatures by estimating the free energy. Insulating state with diagonal or vertical-type charge ordering appears as increasing anisotropy of V$_{ij}$. Considering the effect of the structural distortion observed in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$RbZn(SCN)$_4$ at low temperatures, horizontal-type charge ordered insulating phase tends to be stabilized and the region where 3-fold type exists becomes narrower. Our results are consistent with the metallic state with long periodic charge order which can be related to 3-fold type in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$RbZn(SCN)$_4$ at high temperatures and insulating state with horizontal charge order at low temperatures. For $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$CsZn(SCN)$_4$, we speculate several kinds of charge-ordered states are energetically competing with each other leading to an inhomogeneous state at low temperatures.

Formation of non-unitary state near the upper-critical field of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

We have studied the superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under a magnetic field parallel to the superconducting plane. We show that due to a weak spin-orbit coupling, non-unitary k$_y(\hat{\mathbf{z}}-iα\hat{\mathbf{y}})$ state is formed right at H$_{c2}$, then changes to unitary k$_y\hat{\mathbf{z}}$ state, as a magnetic field is lowered. In terms of this crossover, we address the origin of the observed double peaks of specific heat and the disappearance of the double peaks at low fields.

Charge order and superconductivity in a two-dimensional triangular lattice at n=2/3

To investigate the possibility of charge order and superconductivity in a doped two-dimensional triangular lattice, we study the extended Hubbard model with variational Monte Carlo method. At n=2/3, a commensurate filling for a triangular lattice, it is shown that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction V induces honeycomb-type charge order and antiferromagnetic spin order at U>10t. We also discuss the possibility of superconductivity induced by charge fluctuation and the relation to the superconductivity in Na_{0.35}CoO_{2}1.3H_{2}O and theta-type organic condoctors.

Role of spin-orbit coupling on the spin triplet pairing in Na_{x}CoO_{2}yH_{2}O II: Multiple phase diagram under the magnetic field

The possibility of multiple phase diagram in the novel superconductor Na_{x}CoO_{2}yH_{2}O is analyzed on the basis of the multi-orbital Hubbard model including the atomic spin-orbit coupling. We have shown that the spin triplet pairing state is stable in this model. The p-wave (f-wave) state is stabilized when the Hund's rule coupling is large (small). In the precedent paper, we have determined the direction of d-vector at T=Tc and H=0 within the linearized Dyson-Gorkov equation. In this paper, the pairing state below Tc and under the magnetic field is determined within the weak coupling approximation including the paramagnetic effect. We find that the p+f coexistent state is stabilized at low temperatures in a part of parameter range. We point out that the phase diagram in the H-T plane is quite different between the p-wave, f-wave and p+f-wave superconductivities. The characteristics of each phase are clarified by showing the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. We discuss the comparison with experimental results and suggest some future experiments to detect the multiple phase transition.

Role of spin-orbit coupling on the spin triplet pairing in Na_{x}CoO_{2}yH_{2}O I: d-vector under zero magnetic field

The d-vector in possibile spin triplet superconductor Na_{x}CoO_{2}yH_{2}O is microscopically investigated on the basis of the multi-orbital Hubbard model including the atomic spin-orbit coupling. As a result of the perturbation theory, we obtain the stable spin triplet superconductivity where the p-wave and f-wave states can be stabilized. If we neglect the spin-orbit coupling, superconducting state has 6-fold (3-fold) degeneracy in the p-wave (f-wave) state. This degeneracy is lifted by the spin-orbit coupling. We determine the d-vector within the linearlized Dyson-Gorkov equation. It is shown that the d-vector is always along the plane when the pairing symmetry is p-wave, while it depends on the parameters in case of the f-wave state. The lifting of degeneracy is significant in the p-wave state while it is very small in the f-wave state. This is because the first order term with respect to the spin-orbit coupling is effective in the former case, while it is ineffective in the latter case. The consistency of these results with NMR and \muSR measurements are discussed.
