Ferromagnetic and triplet-pairing instabilities controlled by the trigonal distortion of the CoO_6 octahedra in Na_xCoO_2*yH_2O

In the recently discovered Co-oxide superconductor Na_xCoO_2*yH_2O, the edge-shared CoO6 octahedra are trigonally contracted along the c-axis in the CoO2-plane. We study how this CoO6 distortion affects the magnetic properties and superconductivity in this compound by analyzing the multiorbital Hubbard model using the fluctuation-exchange approximation. It is shown that through generating the trigonal crystal field, the distortion pushes the Co e'g bands up and consequently gives rise to the hole-pocket Fermi surfaces, which have been predicted in the band calculations. As the distortion increases, the hole pockets are enlarged and the ferromagnetic fluctuation as well as the pairing instability increases, which is in good agreement with recent NQR results.

Development of superconducting correlation at low temperatures in the two-dimensional t-J model

The equal-time pairing correlation function of the two-dimensional t-J model on a square lattice is studied using a high-temperature expansion method. The sum of the pairing correlation, its spatial dependence, and the correlation length are obtained as functions of temperature down to $T \simeq 0.2 t$. By comparison of single-particle contributions in the correlation functions, we find an effective attractive interaction between quasi-particles in $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairings. It is shown that d-wave correlation grows rapidly at low temperatures for 0.5 < n < 0.9, with n being the electron density. The temperature for this growth is roughly scaled by J/2. This is in sharp contrast to the Hubbard model in a weak or intermediate coupling region, where there is no numerical evidence of superconductivity.

New possibility of the ground state of quarter-filled one-dimensional strongly correlated electronic system interacting with localized spins

We study numerically the ground state properties of the one-dimensional quarter-filled strongly correlated electronic system interacting antiferromagnetically with localized $S=1/2$ spins. It is shown that the charge-ordered state is significantly stabilized by the introduction of relatively small coupling with the localized spins. When the coupling becomes large the spin and charge degrees of freedom behave quite independently and the ferromagnetism is realized. Moreover, the coexistence of ferromagnetism with charge order is seen under strong electronic interaction. Our results suggest that such charge order can be easily controlled by the magnetic field, which possibly give rise to the giant negative magnetoresistance, and its relation to phthalocyanine compounds is discussed.

Ferromagnetic fluctuation and superconductivity in Na_0.35CoO_2*1.3H_2O: FLEX study of multi-orbital Hubbard model

Spin and charge fluctuations and superconductivity in Na_0.35CoO_2*1.3H_2O are studied based on a multi-orbital Hubbard model. By applying the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation, we show that the Hund's-rule coupling between the Co t2g orbitals causes ferromagnetic spin fluctuation. Triplet pairing is favored by this ferromagnetic fluctuation on the hole-pocket band. We propose that, in Na_0.35CoO_2*1.3H_2O, Co t2g orbitals and inter-orbital Hund's-rule coupling play important roles on the triplet pairing, and this compound can be a first example of the triplet superconductor mediated by inter-orbital-interaction-induced ferromagnetic fluctuation.

Ferromagnetic fluctuation and possible triplet superconductivity in Na_xCoO_2*yH_2O: Fluctuation-exchange study of multi-orbital Hubbard model

Spin and charge fluctuations and superconductivity in a recently discovered superconductor Na_xCoO_2*yH_2O are studied based on a multi-orbital Hubbard model. Tight-binding parameters are determined to reproduce the LDA band dispersions with the Fermi surface, which consist of a large cylindrical one around the Gamma-point and six hole pockets near the K-points. By applying the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation, we show that the Hund's-rule coupling between the Co t2g orbitals causes ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuation. Triplet f_{y(y^2-3x^2)}-wave and p-wave pairings are favored by this FM fluctuation on the hole-pocket band. We propose that, in Na_xCoO_2*yH_2O, the Co t2g orbitals and inter-orbital Hund's-rule coupling play important roles on the triplet pairing, and this compound can be a first example of the triplet superconductor in which the orbital degrees of freedom play substantial roles.

Kinetic Energy, Condensation Energy, Optical Sum Rule and Pairing Mechanism in High-Tc Cuprates

The mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity is investigated with interests on the microscopic aspects of the condensation energy. The theoretical analysis is performed on the basis of the FLEX approximation which is a microscopic description of the spin-fluctuation-induced-superconductivity. Most of phase transitions in strongly correlated electron system arise from the correlation energy which is copmetitive to the kinetic energy. However, we show that the kinetic energy cooperatively induces the superconductivity in the underdoped region. This unusual decrease of kinetic energy below T_c is induced by the feedback effect. The feedback effect induces the magnetic resonance mode as well as the kink in the electronic dispersion, and alters the properties of quasi-particles, such as mass renormalization and lifetime. The crossover from BCS behavior to this unusual behavior occurs for hole dopings. On the other hand, the decrease of kinetic energy below T_c does not occur in the electron-doped region. We discuss the relation to the recent obserbation of the violation of optical sum rule.

Multi-orbital analysis on the Superconductivity in Na_{x}CoO_{2} \cdot y H_{2}O

We preform a multi-orbital analysis on the novel superconductivity in Na_{x}CoO_{2} \cdot yH_{2}O. We construct a three-orbital model which reproduces the band structure expected from the LDA calculation. The effective interaction leading to the pairing is estimated by means of the perturbation theory. It is shown that the spin triplet superconductivity is stabilized in the wide parameter region. This is basically owing to the ferromagnetic character of spin fluctuation. The p-wave and f-wave superconductivity are nearly degenerate. The former is realized when the Hund's rule coupling is large, and vice versa. In a part of the parameter space, the d-wave superconductivity is also stabilized. We point out that the orbital degeneracy plays an essential role for these results through the wave function of quasi-particles. The nearly degeneracy of p-wave and f-wave superconductivity is explained by analysing the orbital character of each Fermi surface. We discuss the validity of some reduced models. While the single band Hubbard model reproducing the Fermi surface is qualitatively inappropriate, we find an effective two-orbital model appropriate for studying the superconductivity. We investigate the vertex corrections higher than the third order on the basis of the two-orbital model. It is shown that the vertex correction induces the screening effect but does not affect on the qualitative results.

Quantum Melting of Charge Order due to Frustration in Two-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Systems

The effect of geometrical frustration in a two-dimensional 1/4-filled strongly correlated electron system is studied theoretically, motivated by layered organic molecular crystals. An extended Hubbard model on the square lattice is considered, with competing nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction, V, and that of next-nearest neighbor along one of the diagonals, V', which favor different charge ordered states. Based on exact diagonalization calculations, we find a metallic phase stabilized over a broad window at V' ~ V even for large Coulomb repulsion strengths as a result of frustrating the charge ordered states. Slightly modifying the lattice geometry relevant to the actual organic compounds does not alter the results, suggesting that this `quantum melting' of charge order is a robust feature of frustrated strongly correlated 1/4-filled systems.

Variational Monte Carlo studies of a t-J model on an anisotropic triangular lattice

With the insulating phase of κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2X in mind, we study a t-J model on an anisotropic triangular lattice, where the hopping integral is t' in one of the three directions, using a variational Monte Carlo method. By changing the value of t'/t, we study the stability of superconducting (SC) states with d- and d+id-wave symmetries and of an antiferromagnetic (AF) state. As t'/t decreases from 1, the stable state immediately switches from the d+id wave to the d wave. The AF state is stabilized from the normal spin liquid state for t'/t\lsim 0.7 at half filling. We also take account of Nagaoka ferromagnetism and a phase separation.

Effects of Fermi surface and superconducting gap structure in the field-rotational experiments: A possible explanation of the cusp-like singularity in YNi$_2$B$_2$C

We have studied the field-orientational dependence of zero-energy density of states (FODOS) for a series of systems with different Fermi surface and superconducting gap structures. Instead of phenomenological Doppler-shift method, we use an approximate analytical solution of Eilenberger equation together with self-consistent determination of order parameter and a variational treatment of vortex lattice. First, we compare zero-energy density of states (ZEDOS) when a magnetic field is applied in the nodal direction ($ν_{node}(0)$) and in the antinodal direction ($ν_{anti}(0)$), by taking account of the field-angle dependence of order parameter. As a result, we found that there exists a crossover magnetic field $H^*$ so that $ν_{anti}(0) > ν_{node}(0)$ for $H < H^*$, while $ν_{node}(0) > ν_{anti}(0)$ for $H > H^*$, consistent with our previous analyses. Next, we showed that $H^*$ and the shape of FODOS are determined by contribution from the small part of Fermi surface where Fermi velocity is parallel to field-rotational plane. In particular, we found that $H^*$ is lowered and FODOS has broader minima, when a superconducting gap has point nodes, in contrast to the result of the Doppler-shift method. We also studied the effects of in-plane anisotropy of Fermi surface. We found that in-plane anisotropy of quasi-two dimensional Fermi surface sometimes becomes larger than the effects of Doppler-shift and can destroy the Doppler-shift predominant region. In particular, this tendency is strong in a multi-band system where superconducting coherence lengths are isotropic. Finally, we addressed the problem of cusp-like singularity in YNi$_2$B$_2$C and present a possible explanation of this phenomenon.

Variational Monte Carlo Studies of Pairing Symmetry for the t-J Model on a Triangular Lattice

As a model of a novel superconductor Na_xCoO_2\cdotyH_2O, a single-band t-J model on a triangular lattice is studied, using a variational Monte Carlo method. We calculate the energies of various superconducting (SC) states, changing the doping rate δand sign of t for small J/|t|. Symmetries of s, d, and d+id (p+ip and f) waves are taken up as candidates for singlet (triplet) pairing. In addition, the possibility of Nagaoka ferromagnetism and inhomogeneous phases is considered. It is revealed that, among the SC states, the d+id wave always has the lowest energy, which result supports previous mean-field studies. There is no possibility of triplet pairing, although the f-wave state becomes stable against a normal state in a special case (δ=0.5 and t<0). For t<0, the complete ferromagnetic state is dominant in a wide range of δand J/|t|, which covers the realistic parameter region of superconductivity.

Influence of superconducting gap structure on the quasiparticle spectrum in the vortex state

We study the vortex state of a layered superconductor with vertical line nodes on its Fermi surface when a magnetic field is applied in the ab-plane direction. We rotate the magnetic field within the plane, and analyze the change of low-energy excitation spectrum. Our analysis is based on the microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation and a convenient approximate analytical method developped by Pesch and Dahm. Both methods give a consistent result. Near the upper critical field H$_{c2}$, we observe a larger zero-energy density of states(ZEDOS) when the magnetic field is applied in the nodal direction, while much below H$_{c2}$, larger ZEDOS is observed under a field in the anti-nodal direction. We give a natural interpretation to this crossover behavior in terms of momentum distribution of low-energy quasiparticles. We examine the recent field angle variation experiments of thermal conductivity and specific heat. Comparison with our results suggest that special care should be taken to derive the position of line nodes from the experimental data. Combining the experimental data of the specific heat and our analyses, we conclude that Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has vertical line nodes in the direction of the a-axis and the b-axis.

Superconductivity in Na_xCoO_2yH_2O by charge fluctuation

A new mechanism for superconductivity in the newly discovered Co-based oxide is proposed by using charge fluctuation. A single-band extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice is studied within random phase approximation. $f$-wave triplet superconductivity is stabilized in the vicinity of charge-density-wave instability, which is in sharp contrast with the square-lattice case. The physical origin of the realization of the $f$-wave triplet state as well as the relevance to experiments are discussed.

Charge fluctuation induced superconducting state in two-dimensional quarter-filled electron systems

We investigate the superconducting (SC) state in two-dimensional extended Hubbard model at a quarter-filling with the on-site repulsive interaction ($U$) and the nearest-neighbor one ($V$), which lead to the spin fluctuation and the charge fluctuation, respectively. The effect of the charge fluctuation on the onset of the SC state is calculated by estimating the pairing interaction within the random phase approximation. Solving the linearized Eliashberg equation with the anomalous self-energy as the function of both momentum and frequency, we examined the singlet SC state on the plane of $U$ and $V$ with the fixed temperature. We found a novel result that the SC state with the $d_{xy}$ symmetry retains for most parameters of $U$ and $V$, although the pairing interaction changes the sign from repulsive one into attractive one with increasing $V$. The reentrant transition as the function of temperature occurs close to the onset of the SC state.

Ferromagnetic Ising Spin Chains Emerging from the Spin Ice under Magnetic Field

A spin-ice compound dysprosium titanate, Dy2Ti2O7, is studied by specific heat measurements in magnetic fields applied along the [110] direction of the cubic unit cell. Above a magnetic field of 0.4 T a relatively sharp peak at T = 1.1 K in the specific heat appears from a broad peak associated with spin-ice freezing at low fields. This new peak is almost independent of field up to 1.5 T, while another broad, field-dependent peak is detected at higher temperature. Under magnetic field along [110] Ising spins on the pyrochlore lattice can be considered to form two orthogonal sets of chains; parallel and perpendicular to the field direction. It is suggested that these perpendicular chains behave as unique ferromagnetic Ising spin chains without long-range order.

Crossover of superconducting properties and kinetic-energy gain in two-dimensional Hubbard model

Superconductivity in the Hubbard model on a square lattice near half filling is studied using an optimization (or correlated) variational Monte Carlo method. Second-order processes of the strong-coupling expansion are considered in the wave functions beyond the Gutzwiller factor. Superconductivity of d_x^2-y^2-wave is widely stable, and exhibits a crossover around U=U_co\sim 12t from a BCS type to a new type. For U\gsim U_co (U\lsim U_co), the energy gain in the superconducting state is derived from the kinetic (potential) energy. Condensation energy is large and \propto exp(-t/J) [tiny] on the strong [weak] coupling side of U_co. Cuprates belong to the strong-coupling regime.

Superconducting states in frustrating t-J model: A model connecting high-$T_c$ cuprates, organic conductors and Na$_x$CoO$_2$

The two-dimensional t-J model on a frustrating lattice is studied using mean-field variational theories with Gutzwiller approximation. We find that a superconducting state with broken time-reversal symmetry (d+id state) is realized in the parameter region close to the triangular lattice. The frustration enlarges the region of superconductivity when $t<0$ for the hole-doped case, which is equivalent to $t>0$ for electron doping. We also discuss the SU(2) degeneracy at half-filling. The d+id state probably corresponds to the spin gap state at half-filling.

Microscopic Identification of the D-vector in Triplet Superconductor Sr_2RuO_4

Triplet superconductivity in Sr_2RuO_4 is investigated with main interest on its internal degree of freedom. We perform a microscopic calculation to investigate how the chiral state d(k) = (k_x \pm ik_y)z is realized among the underlying six degenerate states. Starting from the three band Hubbard model with spin-orbit interaction, we use a perturbation theory in order to calculate the pairing interaction. The p-wave superconductivity with T_c \sim 1.5K is obtained in the moderately weak coupling region. It is shown that the orbital dependent superconductivity (ODS) robustly appears in Sr_2RuO_4. We determine the stabilized state by solving the Eliashberg equations. It is found that the Hund coupling term as well as the spin-orbit interaction is necessary for the ``symmetry breaking interaction''. The main result is that the chiral state is stabilized in case of the p-wave symmetry with the main γ-band, which is obtained in the perturbation theory. When we assume the other pairing symmetry including the f-wave state, the symmetry breaking interaction gives the other D-vector. The electronic structure constructed from the t_2g-orbitals is essential for this result.
