Verification of the tenth-Order QED contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron from diagrams without fermion loops

A discrepancy of approximately 5$σ$ exists between the two known results for the tenth-order QED contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, calculated from Feynman vertex diagrams without fermion loops. To investigate this, we decomposed this contribution into 389 parts based on a self-energy diagram representation, enabling a diagram-by-diagram numerical comparison of the two calculations. No significant discrepancies were found for individual diagrams. However, the numerical differences of the 98 diagrams sharing a common structure were not randomly distributed. The accumulation of these differences resulted in the 5$σ$ discrepancy. A recalculation with increased statistics in the Monte Carlo integration was performed for these 98 diagrams. By replacing the old values with the new ones for these 98 integrals, we have obtained a revised result of $6.800 \pm 0.128$, thereby resolving the discrepancy.

Field-theoretical approach to neutral pion contribution to muon $g-2$

The hadronic light-by-light scattering induces a substantial contribution to the muon $g-2$ with present accuracy of its measurement. The effect caused by the neutral pion through this scattering on the muon $g-2$ has been scrutinized intensively by model calculation and lattice QCD simulation. All of those estimates have been done based on one formula, but it has one pathological aspect. The purpose of this article is to resolve such a pathology from a field-theoretical approach, i.e., by defining the effect in question as the neutral pion intermediate state contribution to the QCD vacuum expectation value of time-ordered product of four electromagnetic currents. It leads (1) the pion pole term corresponding to the imaginary part of the pion propagator $\frac{1}{q^2 - m_π^2 + \mathrm{i} ε}$, (2) and no principle value term corresponding to its real part, resolving the pathology.

Hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomaly from lattice QCD with infinite volume QED at physical pion mass

The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $(g-2$)/2, is computed in the infinite volume QED framework with lattice QCD. We report $a_μ^\text{HLbL}=12.47(1.15)(0.95) \times 10^{-10}$ where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The result is mainly based on the 2+1 flavor Möbius domain wall fermion ensemble with inverse lattice spacing $a^{-1} = 1.73~\mathrm{GeV}$, lattice size $L=5.5~\mathrm{fm}$, and $m_π= 139~\mathrm{MeV}$, generated by the RBC-UKQCD collaborations. The leading systematic error of this result comes from the lattice discretization. This result is consistent with previous determinations.

The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from lattice QCD

We report the first result for the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment with all errors systematically controlled. Several ensembles using 2+1 flavors of physical mass Möbius domain-wall fermions, generated by the RBC/UKQCD collaborations, are employed to take the continuum and infinite volume limits of finite volume lattice QED+QCD. We find $a_μ^{\rm HLbL} = 7.87(3.06)_\text{stat}(1.77)_\text{sys}\times 10^{-10}$. Our value is consistent with previous model results and leaves little room for this notoriously difficult hadronic contribution to explain the difference between the Standard Model and the BNL experiment.

Hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from lattice QCD

We report preliminary results for the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Several ensembles using 2+1 flavors of Möbius domain-wall fermions, generated by the RBC/UKQCD collaborations, are employed to take the continuum and infinite volume limits of finite volume lattice QED+QCD. We find $a_μ^{\rm HLbL} = (7.41\pm6.33)\times 10^{-10}$

Using infinite volume, continuum QED and lattice QCD for the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment

In our previous work, the connected and leading disconnected hadronic light-by-light contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g - 2) have been computed using lattice QCD ensembles corresponding to physical pion mass generated by the RBC/UKQCD collaboration. However, the calculation is expected to suffer from a significant finite volume error that scales like $1/L^2$ where $L$ is the spatial size of the lattice. In this paper, we demonstrate that this problem is cured by treating the muon and photons in infinite volume, continuum QED, resulting in a weighting function that is pre-computed and saved with affordable cost and sufficient accuracy. We present numerical results for the case when the quark loop is replaced by a muon loop, finding the expected exponential approach to the infinite volume limit and consistency with the known analytic result. We have implemented an improved weighting function which reduces both discretization and finite volume effects arising from the hadronic part of the amplitude.

The connected and leading disconnected diagrams of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to muon $g - 2$

We report our recent lattice calculation of hadronic light-by-light contribution to muon $g-2$ using our recently developed moment method. The connected diagrams and the leading disconnected diagrams are included. The calculation is performed on a $48^3 \times 96$ lattice with physical pion mass and 5.5 fm box size. We expect sizable finite volume and finite lattice spacing corrections to the results of these calculations which will be estimated in calculations to be carried out over the next 1-2 years.

Connected and leading disconnected hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment with physical pion mass

We report a lattice QCD calculation of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment at physical pion mass. The calculation includes the connected diagrams and the leading, quark-line-disconnected diagrams. We incorporate algorithmic improvements developed in our previous work. The calculation was performed on the $48^3 \times 96$ ensemble generated with a physical-pion-mass and a 5.5 fm spatial extent by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations using the chiral, domain wall fermion (DWF) formulation. We find $a_μ^{\text{HLbL}} = 5.35 (1.35) \times 10^{- 10}$, where the error is statistical only. The finite-volume and finite lattice-spacing errors could be quite large and are the subject of on-going research. The omitted disconnected graphs, while expected to give a correction of order 10\%, also need to be computed.

On calculating disconnected-type hadronic light-by-light scattering diagrams from lattice QCD

For reliable comparison of the standard model prediction to the muon g-2 with its experimental value, the hadronic light-by-light scattering (HLbL) contribution must be calculated by lattice QCD simulation. HLbL contribution has many types of disconnected-type diagrams. Here, we start with recalling the point that must be taken care of in every method to calculate them by lattice QCD, and present one concrete method called nonperturbative QED method.

Hadronic Light by Light Contributions to the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment With Physical Pions

The current measurement of muonic $g - 2$ disagrees with the theoretical calculation by about 3 standard deviations. Hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) and hadronic light by light (HLbL) are the two types of processes that contribute most to the theoretical uncertainty. The current value for HLbL is still given by models. I will describe results from a first-principles lattice calculation with a 139 MeV pion in a box of 5.5 fm extent. Our current numerical strategies, including noise reduction techniques, evaluating the HLbL amplitude at zero external momentum transfer, and important remaining challenges, in particular those associated with finite volume effects, will be discussed.

Lattice Calculation of Hadronic Light-by-Light Contribution to the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment

The quark-connected part of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment is computed using lattice QCD with chiral fermions. We report several significant algorithmic improvements and demonstrate their effectiveness through specific calculations which show a reduction in statistical errors by more than an order of magnitude. The most realistic of these calculations is performed with a near-physical, $171$ MeV pion mass on a $(4.6\;\mathrm{fm})^3$ spatial volume using the $32^3\times 64$ Iwasaki+DSDR gauge ensemble of the RBC/UKQCD Collaboration.

Lattice Calculation of the Connected Hadronic Light-by-Light Contribution to the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment

The anomalous magnetic moment of muon, $g-2$, is a very precisely measured quantity. However, the current measurement disagrees with standard model by about 3 standard deviations. Hadronic vacuum polarization and hadronic light by light are the two types of processes that contribute most to the theoretical uncertainty. I will describe how lattice methods are well-suited to provide a first-principle's result for the hadronic light by light contribution, the various numerical strategies that are presently being used to evaluate it, our current results and the important remaining challenges which must be overcome.

Hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from lattice QCD

The form factor that yields the light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment is computed in lattice QCD+QED and QED. A non-perturbative treatment of QED is used and is checked against perturbation theory. The hadronic contribution is calculated for unphysical quark and muon masses, and only the diagram with a single quark loop is computed. Statistically significant signals are obtained. Initial results appear promising, and the prospect for a complete calculation with physical masses and controlled errors is discussed.

Positronium resonance contribution to the electron g-2

Recently a few authors pointed out that the positroniums give rise to an extra contribution to the electron $g-2$ with the magnitude comparable to the $O(α^5)$ perturbative effect, which is not taken into account in the perturbative calculation up to $O(α^5)$. Here, we scrutinize how the positronium resonances contribute to the electron $g-2$ through the vacuum polarization function, and conclude that there is no additional sizable $O(α^5)$ contribution to the electron $g-2$.

Non-degenerate light quark masses from 2+1f lattice QCD+QED

We report on a calculation of the effects of isospin breaking in Lattice QCD+QED. This involves using Chiral Perturbation Theory with Electromagnetic corrections to find the renormalized, non-degenerate, light quark masses. The calculations are carried out on QCD ensembles generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations using Domain Wall Fermions and the Iwasaki and Iwasaki+DSDR Gauge Actions with unitary pion masses down to 170 MeV. Non-compact QED is treated in the quenched approximation. The simulations use a $32^3$ lattice size with $a^{-1}=2.28(3)$ GeV (Iwasaki) and 1.37(1) (Iwasaki+DSDR). This builds on previous work from the RBC/UKQCD collaboration with lattice spacing $a^{-1}=1.78(4)$ GeV.

Lattice study on chiral dynamics of two-color six-flavors QCD

The electroweak symmetry breaking and origin of masses may be attributed to the breakdown of chiral symmetry due to a strong gauge dynamics. Among several candidates of such gauge systems, we focus on two-color QCD with $N_f=6$ massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation, and study on whether the dynamics of this gauge system trigger chiral symmetry breaking or not by simulating with Wilson fermions on lattices up to $L/a=32$. We show the result for the quark mass dependence and the volume dependence of some quantities such as the mass of the lightest pseudoscalar meson, decay constant, and give the three evidences supporting the absence of chiral symmetry breaking in the six-flavor theory.

Tenth-Order QED Contribution to the Electron g-2 and an Improved Value of the Fine Structure Constant

This paper presents the complete QED contribution to the electron g-2 up to the tenth order. With the help of the automatic code generator, we have evaluated all 12672 diagrams of the tenth-order diagrams and obtained 9.16 (58)(α/π)^5. We have also improved the eighth-order contribution obtaining -1.9097(20)(α/π)^4, which includes the mass-dependent contributions. These results lead to a_e(theory)=1 159 652 181.78 (77) \times 10^{-12}. The improved value of the fine-structure constant α^{-1} = 137.035 999 174 (35) [0.25 ppb] is also derived from the theory and measurement of a_e.
