Coherent emission from disordered arrays of driven Josephson vortices

We propose a mechanism of coherent emission from driven vortices in stacked intrinsic Josephson junctions. In contrast to super-radiance, which occurs only for highly ordered vortex lattices, we predict resonant radiation emission from weakly correlated vortex arrays. Our analytical results for the THz wave intensity, resonance frequencies, and the dependence of THz emission power on dissipation are in good agreement with the ones obtained by recent simulations.

Broadly Tunable Sub-terahertz Emission from Internal Branches of the Current-voltage Characteristics of Superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d Single Crystals

Continuous, coherent sub-terahertz radiation arises when a dc voltage is applied across a stack of the many intrinsic Josephson junctions in a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d single crystal. The active junctions produce an equal number of I-V characteristic branches. Each branch radiates at a slightly tunable frequency obeying the ac Josephson relation. The overall output is broadly tunable and nearly independent of heating effects and internal cavity frequencies. Amplification by a surrounding external cavity to allow for the development of a useful high-power source is proposed.

Spin-Triplet Vortex State in the Topological Superconductor CuxBi2Se3

We report on the observation of bulk superconductivity from dc magnetization measurements in a cylindrical single crystal of CuxBi2Se3. The magnitude of the magnetization in the Meissner state is very small and the magnetic-field dependence of the magnetization just above the lower critical field Hc1 is very different from those of usual type-II superconductors. We studied the character of the vortex state theoretically in a spin-triplet pairing superconductor and compared it with the experimental results. The results showed that, the superconductivity observed in CuxBi2Se3 is consistent with the spin-triplet pairing superconductivity with odd parity. We also observed a rapid relaxation phenomenon of the superconducting diamagnetism.

Geometrical Resonance Conditions for THz Radiation from the Intrinsic Josephson Junctions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

Subterahertz radiation emitted from a variety of short rectangular-, square-, and disk-shaped mesas of intrinsic Josephson junctions fabricated from a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d single crystal was studied from the observed I-V characteristics, far-infrared spectra, and spatial radiation patterns. In all cases, the radiation frequency satisfies the conditions both for the ac Josephson effect and for a mesa cavity resonance mode. The integer higher harmonics observed in all spectra imply that the ac Josephson effect plays the dominant role in the novel dual-source radiation mechanism.

Evidence for a Dual-Source Mechanism of THz Radiation from Rectangular Mesas of Single Crystalline \bm{$\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}}$} Intrinsic Josephson Junctions

The THz radiation emitted from rectangular mesas of single-crystal $\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}}$ was studied using angular distribution measurements and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Unlike the recent theoretical predictions, the results provide strong evidence for a dual-source mechanism in which the uniform and non-uniform parts of the $ac$-Josephson current act as electric and magnetic current sources, respectively. The latter synchronizes with cavity modes of the mesa with integral harmonics of the fundamental radiation.

Mechanism of Terahertz Electromagnetic Wave Emission from Intrinsic Josephson Junctions

Using a 3-D parallelepiped model of intrinsic Josephson junctions, we calculate the cavity resonance modes of Josephson plasma waves excited by external electric currents. The electromagnetic (EM) wave of the excited Josephson plasma is converted to a THz EM wave at the sample surfaces. The cavity modes accompanied by static phase kinks of the superconducting order parameter have been intensively investigated. The phase kinks induce a spatial modulation of the amplitude of the order parameter around the kinks and decrease the superconducting condensation energy. The Josephson plasma produces a magnetic field in the vacuum in addition to the emitted EM wave. This magnetic energy detemines the orientation of the cavity mode. Taking account of the facts mentioned above, we obtained sharp resonance peaks in the I-V curves and sizable powers of continuous and coherent terahertz wave emission at the cavity resonance. The emission frequencies are inversely proportional to the length of the shorter side of the samples in agreement with experiments.

Computer Simulation on Terahertz Emission from Intrinsic Josephson Junctions of High-T_c Superconductors

Solving coupled nonlinear sine-Gordon equations and Maxwell equations numerically, we study the electromagnetic and superconducting properties of the single crystal of high-$T_c$ superconductor $\rm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}}$ with a static magnetic field applied parallel to the $ab$-plane and a dc current fed in along the c-axis. Cavity resonances of transverse plasma occur in the intrinsic Josephson junctions with frequencies in terahertz regime. It is revealed that the electromagnetic wave can transmit from the junctions into space. The emitted energy counted by the Poynting vector is about $400\rm{W/cm^2}$. The frequency as well as the energy of emission can be tuned almost continuously by the current and magnetic field.

Superconductivity in Polycrystalline Diamond Thin Films

Superconductivity was discovered in heavily boron-doped diamond thin films deposited by the microwave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) method. Advantages of the MPCVD deposited diamond are the controllability of boron concentration in a wide range, and a high boron concentration, especially in (111) oriented films, compared to that of the high-pressure high-temperature method. The superconducting transition temperatures are determined to be 8.7K for Tc onset and 5.0K for zero resistance by transport measurements. And the upper critical field is estimated to be around 7T.

Advantage on Superconductivity of Heavily Boron-Doped (111) Diamond Films

The superconductivity transition temperatures Tc(onset) of 11.4 K and Tc(offset) of 7.4 K, which are the highest in diamond at present, are realized on homoepitaxially grown (111) diamond films with a high boron doping concentration of 8.4E21 cm-3 (4.7 atomic percent). Tc values of (111) diamond films are more than twice as high as those of (100) films at the equivalent boron concentration. The Tc of boron-doped (111) diamond increases as the boron content increases up to the maximum incorporated concentration and is agrees with the value estimated using McMillan's equation. The advantageous Tc for (111) diamond films is due to the higher carrier concentration which exceeds its boron concentration.

Emission of continuous coherent terahertz waves with tunable frequency by intrinsic Josephson junctions

We present a mechanism for emission of electromagnetic terahertz waves by simulation. High $T_{c}$ superconductors form naturally stacked Josephson junctions. When an external current and a magnetic field are applied to the sample, fluxon flow induces voltage. The voltage creates oscillating current through the Josephson effect and the current excites the Josephson plasma. The sample works as a cavity, and the input energy is stored in a form of standing wave of the Josephson plasma. A part of the energy is emitted as terahertz waves.

Decoupled two-dimensional superconductivity and continuous melting transitions in layered superconductors immersed in a parallel magnetic field

Possible phases and the B-T phase diagram of interlayer Josephson vortices induced by a magnetic field parallel to the superconducting layers are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations based on the anisotropic, frustrated XY model. While for low magnetic fields and small anisotropy parameters a single first-order transition is observed similarly to the melting of Abrikosov (or pancake) vortex lattice, an intermediate phase, characterized by decoupled, two-dimensional (2D) quasi long-range crystalline order (QLRCO) and superconductivity, is found at high magnetic fields and large anisotropy parameters. Combining the simulation results with a symmetry argument, it is revealed that this intermediate phase is of Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type, and the melting of 2D quasi Josephson vortex lattices and suppression of superconductivity is a KT transition. Evolution of the intermediate phase to the low-temperature phase of 3D LRCO is second order and belongs to the 3D XY universality class. The three phase boundaries merge at a multicritical point. It is revealed that decoupling of the 3D Josephson vortex lattice into the 2D phase is triggered by hops of Josephson flux lines across superconducting layers activated by thermal fluctuations. The equilibrium phase diagram with the KT phase at high magnetic fields and large anisotropy parameters is consistent with the peculiar Lorentz-force-independent dissipation observed in highly anisotropic high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+y) by Iye et al. (Physica 159C, 433 (1989)).

Kosterlitz-Thouless phase and continuous melting transition in layered superconductors immersed in a parallel magnetic field

B-T phase diagram and phase transitions of interlayer Josephson vortices are investigated. For magnetic fields above a critical value, we find a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type intermediate phase characterized by in-plane two-dimensional, quasi long-range orders (QLROs) of vortex alignment and superconductivity. The transformation to high-temperature normal phase is a KT transition. The evolution to low-temperature phase of three-dimensional (3D) LRO of vortex alignment is a second-order phase transition in the 3D XY universality class. For low magnetic fields, a single first-order melting transition of the Josephson vortex lattice is observed. The present study therefore indicates a multicritical point in the B-T phase diagram.

d-like Symmetry of the Order Parameter and Intrinsic Josephson Effects in Bi2212 Cross-Whisker Junctions

An intrinsic tunnel junction was made using two Bi-2212 single crystal whiskers. The two whiskers with a cross-angle were overlaid at their c-planes and connected by annealing. The angular dependence of the critical current density along the c-axis is of the d-wave symmetry. However, the angular dependence is much stronger than that of the conventional d-wave. Furthermore, the current vs. voltage characteristics of the cross-whiskers junctions show a multiple-branch structure at any cross-angle, indicating the formation of the intrinsic Josephson junction array.

Vibronic mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity

The dispersion of the in-plane Cu-O bond-stretching LO phonon mode in the high-$T_{C}$ superconducting cuprates shows strong softening with doping near the zone boundary. We suggest that it can be described with a negative electronic dielectric function that results in overscreening of inter-site Coulomb interaction due to phonon-induced charge transfer and vibronic electron-phonon resonance. We propose that such a strong electron-phonon coupling of specific modes can form a basis for the phonon mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. With the Eliashberg theory using the experimentally determined electron dispersion and dielectric function, we demonstrate the possibility of superconductivity with the order parameter of the $d_{k_{x}^{2}-k_{y}^{2}}$ symmetry and the transition temperature well in excess of 100K.

A Cross-Whiskers Junction as a Novel Fabrication Process for Intrinsic Josephson Junction

A Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d cross-whiskers junction has been successfully discovered as a novel intrinsic Josephson junction without using any technique for micro-fabrication. Two Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d whisker crystals were placed crosswise on a MgO substrate and heated at 850C for 30 min. They were electrically connected at their c-planes. The measurement terminals were made at the four ends of the whiskers. The I-V characteristics of the cross-whiskers junction at 5K were found to show a clear multiple-branch structure with a spacing of approximately 15 mV that is a feature of the intrinsic Josephson junction. The critical current density Jc was estimated to be 1170 A/cm2. The branch-structure was strongly suppressed by the magnetic field above 1kOe.

Possible critical point in phase diagrams of interlayer Josephson-vortex systems in high-Tc superconductors

A critical value in the product of the anisotropy parameter and the magnetic field is observed in interlayer Josephson-vortex systems by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Below/above this critical value the thermodynamic phase transition between the normal and the superconducting states upon temperature sweeping is first/second order. The origin is the intrinsic pinning effect of the layered structure of high-Tc superconductors.

Flux-line entanglement as the mechanism of melting transition in high-temperature superconductors in a magnetic field

The mechanism of the flux-line-lattice (FLL) melting in anisotropic high-T_c superconductors in ${\bf B}\parallel {\bf \hat{c}}$ is clarified by Monte Carlo simulations of the 3D frustrated XY model. The percentage of entangled flux lines abruptly changes at the melting temperature T_m, while no sharp change can be found in the number and size distribution of vortex loops around T_m. Therefore, the origin of this melting transition is the entanglement of flux lines. Scaling behaviors of physical quantities are consistent with the above mechanism of the FLL melting. The Lindemann number is also evaluated without any phenomenological arguments.
