Comment on "Isoelectronic Ru substitution at Fe-site in Sm(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)AsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ compound and its effects on structural, superconducting and normal state properties" (arXiv:1004.1978)

Based on the five-orbital model, we derive the reduced impurity scattering rate $g=zγ/2πT_{c0}$ in Sm(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_{x}$)AsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ from the residual resistivity. At $x=0$, the transition temperature is $T_{c0}=50$ K. For $0.05 T_{c}/T_{c0}>0.3$) the obtained value of $g$ ranges from 1.5 to 2.9, which suggests that the $s_\pm$-wave state cannot survive. We point out that the magnetoresistance frequently gives an underestimated value of $g$ in correlated electron systems.

High Temperature Multiferroic State in RBaCuFeO5 (R= Y, Lu and Tm)

Magnetic and/or dielectric behaviors have been studied for YBaCuFeO5, LuBaCuFeO5 and TmBaCuFeO5, which are known as members of oxygen-defect ordered perovskite systems RBaCuFeO5 (R=lanthanides Ln and other trivalent elements) and have two magnetic transitions: The magnetic structure of the high temperature(T) ordered phase is basically antiferromagnetic, and with decreasing T, a modulated magnetic component superposed on the antiferromagnetic moments appears at the second transition, where the ferroelectricity also appears (multiferroic). Here, we have found that all the systems studied here exhibit multiferroic behavior in the low T phase, and that TmBaCuFeO5 becomes multiferroic at a temperature as high as the melting point of ice, which is, to our knowledge, the highest value ever found in zero magnetic field.

Structure of Neutron-Scattering Peak in both s++ wave and s+- wave states of an Iron pnictide Superconductor

We study the neutron scattering spectrum in iron pnictides based on the random-phase approximation in the five-orbital model, for fully-gapped s-wave states with sign reversal (s+-) and without sign reversal (s++). In the s++ wave state, we find that a prominent hump structure appears just above the spectral gap, by taking account of the quasiparticle damping gamma due to strong electron-electron correlation: As the superconductivity develops, the reduction in gamma gives rise to the large overshoot in the spectrum above the gap. The obtained hump structure looks similar to the resonance peak in the s+- wave state, although the height and weight of the peak in the latter state is much larger. In the present study, experimentally observed broad spectral peak in iron pnictides is naturally reproduced by assuming the s++ wave state.

Topological odd-parity superconductors

In this letter, we investigate topological phases of full-gapped odd-parity superconductors, which are distinguished by the bulk topological invariants and the topologically protected gapless boundary states. Using the particle-hole symmetry, we introduce Z_2 invariants characterizing topological odd-parity superconductors without or with time-reversal invariance. For odd-parity superconductors, a combination of the inversion and the U(1) gauge symmetry is manifestly preserved, and the combined symmetry enables us to evaluate the Z_2 invariants from the knowledge of the Fermi surface structure. Relating the Z_2 invariants to other topological invariants, we establish characterization of topological odd-parity superconductors in terms of the Fermi surface topology. Simple criteria for topological odd-parity superconductors in various dimensions are provided. Implications of our formulas for nodal odd-parity superconductors are also discussed.

Effects of Ru Doping on the Transport Behavior and Superconducting Transition Temperature of NdFeAsO0.89F0.11

The transport behavior and superconducting transition temperature Tc of NdFe1-yRuyAsO0.89F0.11 have been studied for various y values. Because Ru impurities are isoelectronic to host Fe atoms, we basically expect that the number of electrons does not change with y, at least in the region of small y values. The results indicate that the rate of Tc suppression by Ru atoms is too small to be explained by the pair breaking effect of nonmagnetic impurities expected for the S+- symmetry, confirming our previous results for Co doping.

Studies of Impurity-Doping Effects and NMR Measurement5s of La1111 and/or Nd 1111 Fe-Pnictide Superconductors

Measurements of the electrical resistivities, Hall coefficients, thermoelectric powers, electronic specific heat coefficients have been carried out for samples of LnFe1-yMyAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Nd; M=Co, Mn; x=0.11) obtained by M atom dopings to the superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln1111) system. The NMR longitudinal relaxation rates 1/T1 have also been measured for samples of LaFe1-yCoyAsO1-xFx with various x values. Co atoms doped to the superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx are nonmagnetic, and the Tc-suppression by the Co atoms has been found to be too weak to understand by the pair breaking effect expected for the S+- superconducting symmetry proposed as the most probable one for the system. It throws a serious doubt whether the symmetry is realized in this system. Instead of the pair breaking, two mechanisms of the Tc-suppression by the doped impurities have been found: One is the electron localization, which appears when the sheet resistance exceeds h/4e2=6.45 kohm, and another is the disappearance or reduction of the hole-Fermi-surfaces around the gamma point in the reciprocal space. The latter mechanism has been observed, when the electron number increases with increasing Co-doping level and the system changes from an anomalous metal to an ordinary one. On the two distinct T dependences of 1/T1 of LaFeAsO1-xFx, 1/T1 T6 reported by our group in the T region from Tc to ~0.4 Tc for samples with the highest Tc values with varying x, and 1/T1 T2.5-3.0 observed by many groups in the almost entire T region studied below Tc, we discuss what the origin of the difference is, and show that, at least, the T2.5-3.0-like dependence of 1/T1 cannot be considered as the experimental evidence for the S+- symmetry of the order parameter.

Zero modes, energy gap, and edge states of anisotropic honeycomb lattice in a magnetic field

We present systematic study of zero modes and gaps by introducing effects of anisotropy of hopping integrals for a tight-binding model on the honeycomb lattice in a magnetic field. The condition for the existence of zero modes is analytically derived. From the condition, it is found that a tiny anisotropy for graphene is sufficient to open a gap around zero energy in a magnetic field. This gap behaves as a non-perturbative and exponential form as a function of the magnetic field. The non-analytic behavior with respect to the magnetic field can be understood as tunneling effects between energy levels around two Dirac zero modes appearing in the honeycomb lattice, and an explicit form of the gap around zero energy is obtained by the WKB method near the merging point of these Dirac zero modes. Effects of the anisotropy for the honeycomb lattices with boundaries are also studied. The condition for the existence of zero energy edge states in a magnetic field is analytically derived. On the basis of the condition, it is recognized that anisotropy of the hopping integrals induces abrupt changes of the number of zero energy edge states, which depend on the shapes of the edges sensitively.

Topological properties of spin-triplet superconductors and the Fermi surface topology in the normal state

We report intimate relations between topological properties of full gapped spin-triplet superconductors with time-reversal invariance and the Fermi surface topology in the normal states. An efficient method to calculate the Z2 invariants and the winding number for the spin-triplet superconductors is developed, and connections between these topological invariants and the Fermi surface structures in the normal states are pointed out. We also obtain a correspondence between the Fermi surface topology and gapless surface states in the superconducting states. The correspondence is inherent to spin-triplet superconductivity.

Non-Abelian Topological Order in S-Wave Superfluids of Ultracold Fermionic Atoms

We show that in s-wave superfluids of cold fermionic atoms with laser-field-generated effective spin-orbit interactions, a topological phase with gapless edge states and Majorana fermion quasiparticles obeying the non-Abelian statistics is realized in the case with a large Zeeman magnetic field. Our scenario provides a promising approach for quantum computation manipulating non-Abelian anyons via an s-wave Feshbach resonance.

Wave propagation through Cantor-set media: Chaos, scaling, and fractal structures

Propagation of waves through Cantor-set media is investigated by renormalization-group analysis. For specific values of wave numbers, transmission coefficients are shown to be governed by the logistic map, and in the chaotic region, they show sensitive dependence on small changes of parameters of the system such as the index of refraction. For other values of wave numbers, our numerical results suggest that light transmits completely or reflects completely by the Cantor-set media ${\rm C}_{\infty}$. It is also shown that transmission coefficients exhibit a local scaling behavior near complete transmission if the complete transmission is achieved at a wave number $κ=κ^*$ with a rational $κ^*/π$. The scaling function is obtained analytically by using the Euler's totient function, and the local scaling behavior is confirmed numerically.

Studies of Multiferroic System LiCu2O2 I Sample Characterization and Relationship between Magnetic Properties and Multiferroic Nature

Single-crystal samples of LiCu2O2 with spin 1/2 Cu2+ chains of edge-sharing CuO4 square planes (ribbon chains), have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetic measurements. Neither the atomic deficiency nor the mixing of Cu and Li atoms has been found, indicating that lattice defects conceived as a possible origin of the reported multiferroic behavior can be excluded. Anomalies found in the data of specific heat and neutron magnetic Bragg reflections show clear evidence that the system exhibits successive magnetic transitions at TN1=24.5 K and TN2=22.8 K. Based on the magnetic structures in the intermediate (TN2<T<TN1) and low temperature (T<TN2) phases, determined by the combined studies of neutron scattering and 7Li-NMR measurements, we can consistently understand the fact that the multiferroic properties are observed only below TN2 by considering existing theories.

Studies of Multiferroic System of LiCu2O2 II Magnetic Structures of Two Ordered Phases with Incommensurate Modulations

Neutron diffraction and 7Li-NMR have been applied to determine the multiferroic system LiCu2O2, which has four chains (ribbon chains) of edge-sharing CuO4 square planes in a unit cell. We have confirmed that there are successive magnetic transitions at TN1=24.5 K and TN2=22.8 K. In the T region between TN1 and TN2, the quasi one-dimensional spins (S=1/2) of Cu2+ ions within a chain have a collinear and sinusoidally modulated structure with Cu-moments parallel to the c-axis and with the modulation vector along the b-axis. At T < TN2, an ellipsoidal helical spin structure with the incommensurate modulation has been found. Here, we present detailed parameters, describing the modulation amplitudes, helical axis vectors as well as the relative phases of the modulations of four ribbon chains, which can well reproduce both the NMR and neutron results in the two magnetically ordered phases. This finding of the rather precise magnetic structures enables us to discuss the relationship between the magnetic structure and the multiferroic nature of the present system in zero magnetic field, as presented in our companion paper (paper I), and open a way how to understand the reported electric polarization under the finite magnetic field.

Structural Transition of Li2RuO3 Induced by Molecular-Orbit Formation

A pseudo honeycomb system Li2RuO3 exhibits a second-order-like transition at temperature T=Tc=540 K to a low-T nonmagnetic phase with a significant lattice distortion forming Ru-Ru pairs. For this system, we have calculated the band structure, using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) in both the high- and low- T phases, and found that the results of the calculation can naturally explain the insulating behavior observed in the low-T phase. The detailed characters of the Ru 4d t2g bands obtained by the tight-binding fit to the calculated dispersion curves show clear evidence that the structural transition is driven by the formation of the Ru-Ru molecular-orbits, as proposed in our previous experimental studies.

Topological Phases of Noncentrosymmetric Superconductors: Edge States, Majorana Fermions, and the Non-Abelian Statistics

The existence of edge states and zero energy modes in vortex cores is a hallmark of topologically nontrivial phases realized in various condensed matter systems such as the fractional quantum Hall states, p+ip superconductors, and Z_2 insulators (quantum spin Hall state). We examine this scenario for two dimensional noncentrosymmetric superconductors which allow the parity-mixing of Cooper pairs. It is found that even when the s-wave pairing gap is nonzero, provided that the superconducting gap of spin-triplet pairs is larger than that of spin-singlet pairs, gapless edge states and zero energy Majorana modes in vortex cores emerge, characterizing topological order. Furthermore, it is shown that for Rashba superconductors, the quantum spin Hall effect produced by gapless edge states exists even under an applied magnetic field which breaks time-reversal symmetry provided that the field direction is perpendicular to the propagating direction of the edge modes. This result making a sharp contrast to the Z_2 insulator is due to an accidental symmetry inherent in the Rashba model. It is also demonstrated that in the case with magnetic fields, the non-Abelian statistics of vortices is possible under a particular but realistic condition.

The Hall conductance, topological quantum phase transition and the Diophantine equation on honeycomb lattice

We consider a tight-binding model with the nearest neighbour hopping integrals on the honeycomb lattice in a magnetic field. Assuming one of the three hopping integrals, which we denote t_a, can take a different value from the two others, we study quantum phase structures controlled by the anisotropy of the honeycomb lattice. For weak and strong t_a regions, respectively, the Hall conductances are calculated algebraically by using the Diophantine equation. Except for a few specific gaps, we completely determine the Hall conductances in these two regions including those for subband gaps. In a weak magnetic field, it is found that the weak t_a region shows the unconventional quantization of the Hall conductance, σ_{xy}=-(e^2/h)(2n+1), (n=0,\pm 1,\pm 2,...), near the half-filling, while the strong t_a region shows only the conventional one, σ_{xy}=-(e^2/h)n,(n=0,1,2,...). From topological nature of the Hall conductance, the existence of gap closing points and quantum phase transitions in the intermediate t_a region are concluded. We also study numerically the quantum phase structure in detail, and find that even when t_a=1, namely in graphene case, the system is in the weak t_a phase except when the Fermi energy is located near the van Hove singularity or the lower and upper edges of the spectrum.

Preparation of the oxypnictides and studies on their superconductivity

LaFe1-yCoyAsO1-xFx (x=0.11) with various y values were prepared and their electrical resistivities, superconducting diamagnetisms and Hall coefficients have been measured. 75As- and 135La-NMR studies have also been carried out In spite of the successful Co-doping, we have not found any meaningful correlation of Tc with y, which indicates that the Tc-suppression by Co-doping is considered not to be so significant as expected for superconductors with nodes. Even for superconductors without nodes, it may not be easy to expect this small effect on Tc, if there are two different (disconnected) Fermi surfaces whose order parameters have opposite signs. The data of the NMR Knight shift indicate that the Cooper pairs are in the singlet state and the spin susceptibility is almost fully suppressed at low temperature.

On the Superconductivity of LaFe1-yCoyAsO1-xFx

We have prepared the superconducting system LaFe1-yCoyAsO1-xFx (x=0.11) and carried out measurements of their electrical resistivities r and superconducting diamagnetisms. 75As- and 135La-NMR studies have also been carried out. The Knight shift observed for 75As has been found to be suppressed by the superconductivity, while for 135La, the shift is almost insensitive to the superconductivity. This result presents rather strong experimental evidence for the singlet pairing. The Co-doping effect on the superconducting transition temperature Tc is not so significant as expected for superconductors with nodes, suggesting that the potential scattering does not seem to primarily suppress the superconductivity. Even for superconductors without nodes, it may not be so trivial to expect this small effect, if there are two different (disconnected) Fermi surfaces whose order parameters have opposite signs. As a possible explanation of this small Tc suppression seems to be related with the loss of the itinerant nature of the electrons.
