Magnetic Excitations of Spin-Gap System Na3Cu2SbO6 with Distorted Honeycomb Structure

Magnetic excitation spectra of quantum spins of Na3Cu2SbO6 with the distorted honeycomb structure have been measured by neutron inelastic scattering. The intensity distribution and the dispersion curves of the excitations indicate that the spin system can be well understood by considering one-dimensional spin chains formed of Cu2+ ions on a lattice of the alternation of the shorter- and longer-spacings along the b axis. The exchange interactions between the neighboring spins with the shorter- and longer-spacings correspond to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ones, respectively. These findings are consistent with those we reported previously on the basis of macroscopic measurements. The observed spin gap is 8.9 meV and the antiferromagnetic- and ferromagnetic-interactions have been found to be 13.9 and -12.5 meV, respectively.

The abelianization of the level 2 mapping class group

In this paper, we determine the abelianization of the level d mapping class group for d=2 and odd d. We also extend the homomorphism of the Torelli group defined by Heap to a homomorphism of the level 2 mapping class group.

Isotope Effect on the Superconducting Transition Temperature of NaxCoO2.yH2O

The effect of the 16O-->18O substitution on the superconducting transition temperatures Tc of NaxCoO2.yH2O has been studied for several sets of samples. Each set has two kinds of samples, one with the oxygen sites in the CoO2 layers filled with 16O atoms and another with these sites partially substituted with 18O isotope. These two kinds of samples were prepared in parallel in whole preparation processes. For all the sample sets, we have not found any significant difference of the Tc values between the non-substituted and substituted samples, which indicates that the oxygen isotope effect is not appreciable in NaxCoO2.yH2O. The result, however, does not necessarily exclude the possibility of the phonon mechanism of the superconductivity, because the strong correlation effect suppresses the isotope effect as pointed out previously.

NMR studies of Successive Phase Transitions in Na0.5CoO2 and K0.5CoO2

59Co- and 23Na-NMR measurements have been carried out on polycrystalline and c-axis aligned samples of Na0.5CoO2, which exhibits successive transitions at temperatures T = 87 K (= Tc1) and T = 53 K (= Tc2). 59Co-NMR has also been carried out on c-axis aligned crystallites of K0.5CoO2 with similar successive transitions at Tc1 ~ 60 K and Tc2 ~ 20 K. For Na0.5CoO2, two sets of three NMR lines of 23Na nuclei explained by considering the quadrupolar frequencies nuQ ~1.32 and 1.40 MHz have been observed above Tc1, as is expected from the crystalline structure. Rather complicated but characteristic variation of the 23Na-NMR spectra has been observed with varying T through the transition temperatures, and the internal fields at two crystallographically distinct Na sites are discussed on the basis of the magnetic structures reported previously. The internal fields at two distinct Co sites observed below Tc1 and the 591/T1-T curves of Na0.5CoO2 and K0.5CoO2 are also discussed in a comparative way.

Co-NMR Knight Shift of NaxCoO2 \dot yH2O Studied in Both Superconducting Regions of the Tc-nuQ3 Phase Diagram Divided by the Nonsuperconducting Phase

In the temperature (T)-nuQ3 phase diagram of NaxCoO2 \dot yH2O, there exist two superconducting regions of nuQ3 separated by the nonsuperconducting region, where nuQ3 is usually estimated from the peak position of the 59Co-NQR spectra of the 5/2-7/2 transition and well-approximated here as nuQ3~3nuQ,nuQ being the interaction energy between the nuclear quadrupole moment and the electric field gradient. We have carried out measurements of the 59Co-NMR Knight shift (K) for a single crystal in the higher-nuQ3 superconducting phase and found that K begins to decrease with decreasing T at Tc for both magnetic field directions parallel and perpendicular to CoO2-planes. The result indicates together with the previous ones that the superconducting pairs are in the spin-singlet state in both phases, excluding the possibility of the spin-triplet superconductivity in this phase diagram. The superconductivity of this system spreads over the wide nuQ3 regions, but is suppressed in the narrow region located at the middle point of the region possibly due to charge instability.

A class function on the mapping class group of an orientable surface and the Meyer cocycle

In this paper we define a $\mathbf{QP}^1$-valued class function on the mapping class group $\mathcal{M}_{g,2}$ of a surface $Σ_{g,2}$ of genus $g$ with two boundary components. Let $E$ be a $Σ_{g,2}$ bundle over a pair of pants $P$. Gluing to $E$ the product of an annulus and $P$ along the boundaries of each fiber, we obtain a closed surface bundle over $P$. We have another closed surface bundle by gluing to $E$ the product of $P$ and two disks. The sign of our class function cobounds the 2-cocycle on $\mathcal{M}_{g,2}$ defined by the difference of the signature of these two surface bundles over $P$.

The abelianization of a symmetric mapping class group

We determine the abelianization of the symmetric mapping class group of a double unbranched cover using the Riemann theta constant, Schottky theta constant, and the theta multiplier. We also give lower bounds of the abelianizations of some finite index subgroups of the mapping class group.

Fluctuations in Chemical Gelation

We study a chemical gelation model in two dimensions which includes both monomer aggregations and bond fluctuations. Our numerical simulation shows that a sol-gel transition occurs when an initial monomer concentration is above a critical concentration. Fractal aggregates grow until the sol-gel transition occurs. After the gelation, however, bond fluctuations break the fractal structure and a novel inhomogeneous gel fibre network appears instead. A pore size distribution of the inhomogeneous structure shows the existence of hierarchical structures in the gel phase. It is also found that slow dynamics appear near the critical concentration.

Distribution of spectral-flow gaps in the Rashba model with disorder: a new universality

We report a study of disordered electron systems with spin-orbit coupling on a cylinder using methods of random matrix ensembles. With a threading flux turned on, the single particle levels will generally avoid, rather than cross, each other. Our numerical study of the level-avoiding gaps in the disordered Rashba model demonstrates that the normalized gap distribution is of a universal form, independent of the random strength and the system size. For small gaps it exhibits a linear behavior, while for large gaps it decays exponentially. A framework based on matrix mechanical models is suggested, and is verified to reproduce the universal linear behavior at small gaps. Thus we propose to use the distribution of the spectral-flow gaps associated with flux insertion as a new way to characterize 2d random systems with spin-orbit coupling. The relevance and qualitative implications for spin (Hall) transport are also addressed.

Braid Group, Gauge Invariance and Topological Order

Topological order in two-dimensional systems is studied by combining the braid group formalism with a gauge invariance analysis. We show that flux insertions (or large gauge transformations) pertinent to the toroidal topology induce automorphisms of the braid group, giving rise to a unified algebraic structure that characterizes the ground-state subspace and fractionally charged, anyonic quasiparticles. Minimal ground state degeneracy is derived without assuming any relation between quasiparticle charge and statistics. We also point out that noncommutativity between large gauge transformations is essential for the topological order in the fractional quantum Hall effect.

Topological Discrete Algebra, Ground State Degeneracy, and Quark Confinement in QCD

Based on the permutation group formalism, we present a discrete symmetry algebra in QCD. The discrete algebra is hidden symmetry in QCD, which is manifest only on a space-manifold with non-trivial topology. Quark confinement in the presence of the dynamical quarks is discussed in terms of the discrete symmetry algebra. It is shown that the quark deconfinement phase has the ground state degeneracy depending on the topology of the space, which gives a gauge-invariant distinction between the confinement and deconfinement phases. We also point out that new quantum numbers relating to the fractional quantum Hall effect exist in the deconfinement phase.

Ferroelectric Transition Induced by the Incommensurate Magnetic Ordering in LiCuVO4

A ferroelectric transition occurring simultaneously with helical spin order has been found in both the polycrystalline and single crystal samples of LiCuVO4. The system has Cu2+ spins (s=1/2) of the CuO2 chains formed of edge-sharing CuO4 squares. Possibly due to the frustrated nature caused by the competition between the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions, Cu spins exhibit, as has been already reported, the helical magnetic order with the incommensurate modulation vector Q along the chain direction and with the helical axis e3 perpendicular to the CuO4 squares. The electric polarization P can be understood by the recently predicted relation (P is proportional to Q*e3). The transition temperature has been found to be gradually suppressed by the applied magnetic field.

New Type Phase Transition of Li2RuO3 with Honeycomb Structure

A new-type structural transition has been found in Li2RuO3 with honeycomb lattice of edge-sharing RuO6-octahedra. With decreasing temperature T, the electrical resistivity exhibits an anomalous increase at T=Tc~540 K, suggesting the (metal to insulator)-like transition and the magnetic susceptibility also shows a sharp decrease. Detailed structure analyses have revealed that the high temperature space group C2/m changes to P21/m at Tc. The most striking fact is that a significant reduction of the bond lengths is found between two of six Ru-Ru pairs of the hexagon in the low temperature phase, indicating a new type phase transition by the mechanism of the formation of molecular orbits of these Ru-Ru pairs.

Successive Magnetic Transitions of the Kagome Staircase Compound Co3V2O8 Studied in Various Magnetic Fields

For the spin-3/2 kagome staircase system Co3V2O8, magnetic field (H)-temperature (T) phase diagrams have been constructed for the fields along three principal directions up to 5 T, using results of various macroscopic measurements on single crystal samples and also using neutron diffraction data taken on both powder and single crystal samples under H along c. In zero magnetic field, the system exhibits three transitions at temperatures Tc1~11.2 K, Tc2~8.8 K and Tc3~ (6.0-7.0) K. The single crystal data present clear evidence for the noncollinear nature of the magnetic structures in all magnetically ordered phases below Tc1. The sinusoidal nature of the incommensurate modulation of the ordered moment reported in the former work has been confirmed between Tc1 and Tc2, that is, no higher harmonics of the modulation have been detected even for the present large single crystal. Even in the phase of commensurate modulation between Tc2 and Tc3, we have not detected any higher harmonics of the modulation. The phase diagrams show that the magnetically ordered phases sensitively change to other phases with H, indicating that the geometrical frustration inherent in this system is important for the determination of the phase diagram. No evidence for ferroelectric transitions has been observed in the measurements of the dielectric constant applying the electric fields along three crystallographic axes, a, b and c. Only small dielectric anomalies closely connected with the magnetic phase transitions have been found.

Existence of the Co3+ Low Spin State in TbBaCo2O5.5

NMR studies have been carried out on a single crystal sample of TbBaCo2O5.5 with the oxygen-deficient perovskite structure. We have also carried out neutron diffraction studies and added new results to our previously published data. By analyzing these data, the magnetic structures and the spin states of the system, which have been the subjects of strong controversies, are argued in the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. We show that among various magnetic structures ever proposed, only our non-collinear ones can reproduce all experimental results accumulated up to now.

Anomalous Hall Resistivity of TbBaCo2O5.53 with Non-trivial Magnetic Structure

To investigate the Hall resistivity rH of systems with non-trivial spin structures, transport and magnetic properties of the oxygen deficient perovskite system TbBaCo2O5.53 with non-trivial magnetic structures have been adopted. As has been already known, the system exhibits, with decreasing temperature T, a transition to a ferromagnetic (FM) phase with non-collinear magnetic structure at TC 280 K in zero magnetic field and with further decreasing T, the spontaneous magnetization begins to decrease at T1~260 K and becomes zero at TN 245 K, where an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with non-collinear magnetic structure is realized. The metamagnetic behavior is induced by the relatively small magnetic field H (< 5 T) in the T region between ~200 K and T1. In this T region, unusual H dependence of rH has been observed. By analyzing the observed rH and magnetization M, the H dependence of the anomalous Hall coefficients Rs has been obtained at various fixed temperatures. Based on the magnetic structure reported previously by our group, the possible relevance of the non-trivial magnetic structure to the observed unusual behavior of rH is pointed out.

Studies of the Anomalous Hall Effect and Magnetic Structure of Nd2Mo2O7 -Test of the Chirality Mechanism-

Neutron scattering studies have been carried out under the magnetic fields H//[0_11] and H//[001] on a single crystal of Nd2Mo2O7, whose Hall resistivity(rhoH) exhibits quite unusual H- and temperature(T)-dependences. Material parameters such as the single ion anisotropies of the Mo- and Nd- moments and exchange coupling constants among the Mo-Mo, Mo-Nd and Nd-Nd moments, have been determined to reproduce various kinds of experimental data taken as a function of H and T. For example, the neutron Bragg intensities, magnetization curves and the magnetic specific heats have been reproduced by the common parameters. By using the magnetic structure reproduced by these parameters, the spin chirality (chi) of Mo spins or the fictitious magnetic flux Phi proportional to chi has been calculated as a function of H and T by using equation chi= , where the bracket means the statistical average. (Note that we do not use the equation chi= x , because the local nature of the chirality should be correctly considered.) Comparing the calculated results with the observed rhoH, we can conclude that the unusual behavior of rH cannot be understood consistently only by the chirality mechanism.

Nodal Structure of Superconductors with Time-Reversal Invariance and Z2 Topological Number

A topological argument is presented for nodal structures of superconducting states with time-reversal invariance. A generic Hamiltonian which describes a quasiparticle in superconducting states with time-reversal invariance is derived, and it is shown that only line nodes are topologically stable in single-band descriptions of superconductivity. Using the time-reversal symmetry, we introduce a real structure and define topological numbers of line nodes. Stability of line nodes is ensured by conservation of the topological numbers. Line nodes in high-Tc materials, the polar state in p-wave paring and mixed singlet-triplet superconducting states are examined in detail.
