Crossover from adiabatic to sudden interaction quench in a Luttinger liquid

Motivated by recent experiments on interacting cold atoms, we analyze interaction quenches in Luttinger liquids (LL), where the interaction is ramped from zero to a finite value within a finite time. The fermionic single particle density matrix reveals several regions of spatial and temporal coordinates relative to the quench time, termed as Fermi liquid, sudden quench LL, adiabatic LL regimes, and a LL regime with time dependent exponent. The various regimes can also be observed in the momentum distribution of the fermions, directly accessible through time of flight experiments. Most of our results apply to arbitrary quench protocols.

Interaction ramps in a trapped Bose condensate

Non-adiabatic interaction ramps are considered for trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. The deviation from adiabaticity is characterized through the heating or residual energy produced during the ramp. We find that the dependence of the heat on the ramp time is very sensitive to the ramp protocol. We explain features of this dependence through a single-parameter effective description based on the dynamics of the condensate size.

Entanglement Scaling of Fractional Quantum Hall states through Geometric Deformations

We present a new approach to obtaining the scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy in fractional quantum Hall states from finite-size wavefunctions. By employing the torus geometry and the fact that the torus aspect ratio can be readily varied, we can extract the entanglement entropy of a spatial block as a continuous function of the block boundary. This approach allows us to extract the topological entanglement entropy with an accuracy superior to what is possible on the spherical or disc geometry, where no natural continuously variable parameter is available. Other than the topological information, the study of entanglement scaling is also useful as an indicator of the difficulty posed by fractional quantum Hall states for various numerical techniques.

Disentangling Entanglement Spectra of Fractional Quantum Hall States on Torus Geometries

We analyze the entanglement spectrum of Laughlin states on the torus and show that it is arranged in towers, each of which is generated by modes of two spatially separated chiral edges. This structure is present for all torus circumferences, which allows for a microscopic identification of the prominent features of the spectrum by perturbing around the thin torus limit.

Interaction induced fractional Bloch and tunneling oscillations

We study the dynamics of few interacting bosons in a one-dimensional lattice with dc bias. In the absence of interactions the system displays single particle Bloch oscillations. For strong interaction the Bloch oscillation regime reemerges with fractional Bloch periods which are inversely proportional to the number of bosons clustered into a bound state. The interaction strength is affecting the oscillation amplitude. Excellent agreement is found between numerical data and a composite particle dynamics approach. For specific values of the interaction strength a particle will tunnel from the interacting cloud to a well defined distant lattice location.

Entanglement between particle partitions in itinerant many-particle states

We review `particle partitioning entanglement' for itinerant many-particle systems. This is defined as the entanglement between two subsets of particles making up the system. We identify generic features and mechanisms of particle entanglement that are valid over whole classes of itinerant quantum systems. We formulate the general structure of particle entanglement in many-fermion ground states, analogous to the `area law' for the more usually studied entanglement between spatial regions. Basic properties of particle entanglement are first elucidated by considering relatively simple itinerant models. We then review particle-partitioning entanglement in quantum states with more intricate physics, such as anyonic models and quantum Hall states.

Finite-rate quenches of site bias in the Bose-Hubbard dimer

For a Bose-Hubbard dimer, we study quenches of the site energy imbalance, taking a highly asymmetric Hamiltonian to a fully symmetric one. The ramp is carried out over a finite time that interpolates between the instantaneous and adiabatic limits. We provide results for the excess energy of the final state compared to the ground state energy of the final Hamiltonian, as a function of the quench rate. This excess energy serves as the analog of the defect density that is considered in the Kibble-Zurek picture of ramps across phase transitions. We also examine the fate of quantum `self-trapping' when the ramp is not instantaneous.

Edge-locking and quantum control in highly polarized spin chains

For an open-boundary spin chain with anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) interactions, we present states in which a connected block near the edge is polarized oppositely to the rest of the chain. We show that such blocks can be `locked' to the edge of the spin chain, and that there is a hierarchy of edge-locking effects at various orders of the anisotropy. The phenomenon enables dramatic control of quantum state transmission: the locked block can be freed by flipping a single spin or a few spins.

Edge-localized states in quantum one-dimensional lattices

In one-dimensional quantum lattice models with open boundaries, we find and study localization at the lattice edge. We show that edge-localized eigenstates can be found in both bosonic and fermionic systems, specifically, in the Bose-Hubbard model with on-site interactions and in the spinless fermion model with nearest-neighbor interactions. We characterize the localization through spectral studies via numerical diagonalization and perturbation theory, through considerations of the eigenfunctions, and through the study of explicit time evolution. We concentrate on few-particle systems, showing how more complicated edge states appear as the number of particles is increased.

Entanglement and level crossings in frustrated ferromagnetic rings

We study the entanglement content of a class of mesoscopic tunable magnetic systems. The systems are closed finite spin-1/2 chains with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions frustrated by antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions. The finite chains display a series of level crossings reflecting the incommensurate physics of the corresponding infinite-size chain. We present dramatic entanglement signatures characterizing these unusual level crossings. We focus on multi-spin and global measures of entanglement rather than only one-spin or two-spin entanglements. We compare and contrast the information obtained from these measures to that obtained from traditional condensed matter measures such as correlation functions.

A vortex dipole in a trapped two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the conservative dynamics and stationary configurations of a vortex-antivortex pair in a harmonically trapped two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. We establish the conceptual framework for understanding the stationary states and the topological defect trajectories, through considerations of different mechanisms of vortex motion and the bifurcation of soliton-like stationary solutions. Our insights are based on Lagrangian-based variational calculations, numerical solutions of both the time-dependent and time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equations, and exact solutions for the non-interacting case.

Entanglement signatures of quantum Hall phase transitions

We study quantum phase transitions involving fractional quantum Hall states, using numerical calculations of entanglements and related quantities. We tune finite-size wavefunctions on spherical geometries, by varying the interaction potential away from the Coulomb interaction. We uncover signatures of quantum phase transitions contained in the scaling behavior of the entropy of entanglement between two parts of the sphere. In addition to the entanglement entropy, we show that signatures of quantum phase transitions also appear in other aspects of the reduced density matrix of one part of the sphere.

Survival benefits in mimicry: a quantitative framework

Mimicry is a resemblance between species that benefits at least one of the species. It is a ubiquitous evolutionary phenomenon particularly common among prey species, in which case the advantage involves better protection from predation. We formulate a mathematical description of mimicry among prey species, to investigate benefits and disadvantages of mimicry. The basic setup involves differential equations for quantities representing predator behavior, namely, the probabilities for attacking prey at the next encounter. Using this framework, we present new quantitative results, and also provide a unified description of a significant fraction of the quantitative mimicry literature. The new results include `temporary' mutualism between prey species, and an optimal density at which the survival benefit is greatest for the mimic. The formalism leads naturally to extensions in several directions, such as the evolution of mimicry, the interplay of mimicry with population dynamics, etc. We demonstrate this extensibility by presenting some explorations on spatiotemporal pattern dynamics.

Trapped fermionic clouds distorted from the trap shape due to many-body effects

We present a general approach for calculating densities and other local quantities of trapped Fermi gases, when the cloud shape is distorted with respect to the trap shape due to global energy considerations. Our approach provides a consistent way to explore physics beyond the local density approximation, if this is necessary due to the distortion. We illustrate this by analyzing in detail experimentally observed distortions in an imbalanced Fermi mixture in an elongated trap. In particular, we demonstrate in that case dramatic deviations from ellipsoidal cloud shapes arising from the competition between surface and bulk energies.

Squeezing in the weakly interacting uniform Bose condensate

We investigate the presence of squeezing in the weakly repulsive uniform Bose gas, in both the condensate mode and in the nonzero opposite-momenta mode pairs, using two different variational formulations. We explore the U(1) symmetry breaking and Goldstone's theorem in the context of a squeezed coherent variational wavefunction, and present the associated Ward identity. We show that squeezing of the condensate mode is absent at the mean field Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov level and emerges as a result of fluctuations about mean field as a finite volume effect, which vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. On the other hand, the squeezing of the excitations about the condensate survives the thermodynamic limit and is interpreted in terms of density-phase variables using a number-conserving formulation of the interacting Bose gas.

Entanglement entropy in fermionic Laughlin states

We present analytic and numerical calculations on the bipartite entanglement entropy in fractional quantum Hall states of the fermionic Laughlin sequence. The partitioning of the system is done both by dividing Landau level orbitals and by grouping the fermions themselves. For the case of orbital partitioning, our results can be related to spatial partitioning, enabling us to extract a topological quantity (the `total quantum dimension') characterizing the Laughlin states. For particle partitioning we prove a very close upper bound for the entanglement entropy of a subset of the particles with the rest, and provide an interpretation in terms of exclusion statistics.

Pairing of a trapped resonantly-interacting fermion mixture with unequal spin populations

We consider the phase separation of a trapped atomic mixture of fermions with unequal spin populations near a Feshbach resonance. In particular, we determine the density profile of the two spin states and compare with the recent experiments of Partridge et al. (cond-mat/0511752). Overall we find quite good agreement. We identify the remaining discrepancies and pose them as open problems.
