Ultracold Superstrings in atomic boson-fermion mixtures

We propose a setup with ultracold atomic gases that can be used to make a nonrelativistic superstring in four spacetime dimensions. In particular, we consider for the creation of the superstring a fermionic atomic gas that is trapped in the core of a vortex in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We explain the required tuning of experimental parameters to achieve supersymmetry between the fermionic atoms and the bosonic modes describing the oscillations in the vortex position. Furthermore, we discuss the experimental consequences of supersymmetry.

Ring-shaped luminescence pattern in biased quantum wells studied as a steady state reaction front

Under certain conditions, focused laser excitation in semiconductor quantum well structures can lead to charge separation and a circular reaction front, which is visible as a ring-shaped photoluminescence pattern. The diffusion-reaction equations governing the system are studied here with the aim of a detailed understanding of the steady state. The qualitative asymmetry in the sources for the two carriers is found to lead to unusual effects which dramatically affect the steady-state configuration. Analytic expressions are derived for carrier distributions and interface position for a number of cases. These are compared with steady-state information obtained from simulations of the diffusion-reaction equations.

Sweeping a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate across a Feshbach resonance

We consider the dissociation of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate during a magnetic-field sweep through a Feshbach resonance that starts on the molecular side of the resonance and ends on the atomic side. In particular, we determine the energy distribution of the atoms produced after the sweep. We find that the shape of the energy distribution strongly depends on the rate of the magnetic-field sweep, in a manner that is in good agreement with recent experiments.

Transition Temperature of Dilute, Weakly Repulsive Bose Gas

Within a quasiparticle framework, we reconsider the issue of computing the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature ($T_c$) in a weakly non-ideal Bose gas. The main result of this and previous investigations is that $T_c$ increases with the scattering length $a$, with the leading dependence being either linear or log-linear in $a$. The calculation of $T_c$ reduces to that of computing the excitation spectrum near the transition. We report two approaches to regularizing the infrared divergence at the transition point. One leads to a $a\sqrt{|\ln{a}|}$-like shift in $T_c$, and the other allows numerical calculations for the shift.

Structural Transition of Wigner Crystal on Liquid Substrate

The physics of an electron solid, held on a cryogenic liquid surface by a pressing electric field, is examined in a low-density regime that has not been explored before. We consider the effect of the pressing field in distorting the surface at the position of each electron and hence inducing an attractive force between the electrons. The system behavior is described in terms of an interplay between the repulsive Coulomb interaction and the attractive surface-induced interaction between individual electrons. For small densities and large enough pressing fields, we find a parameter regime where a square lattice is more favorable than the usual triangular lattice; we map out the first-order transition curve separating the two lattice geometries at zero temperature. In addition, our description allows an alternate static perspective on the charge-density wave instability of the system, corresponding to the formation of multi-electron dimples.
