The interacting 2D Bose gas and nonlinear Gibbs measures

We announce a new theorem bearing on high-temperature 2D Bose gases. In a certain mean-field-like regime, the grand-canonical quantum Gibbs state reduces to a nonlinear Gibbs measure constructed from a renormalized mean-field energy functional. This establishes a rigorous connection between quantum fields and (singular) classical fields in the regime of interest.

Blow-up profile of rotating 2D focusing Bose gases

We consider the Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing an attractive Bose gas trapped to a quasi 2D layer by means of a purely harmonic potential, and which rotates at a fixed speed of rotation $Ω$. First we study the behavior of the ground state when the coupling constant approaches $a\_*$ , the critical strength of the cubic nonlinearity for the focusing nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation. We prove that blow-up always happens at the center of the trap, with the blow-up profile given by the Gagliardo-Nirenberg solution. In particular, the blow-up scenario is independent of $Ω$, to leading order. This generalizes results obtained by Guo and Seiringer (Lett. Math. Phys., 2014, vol. 104, p. 141--156) in the non-rotating case. In a second part we consider the many-particle Hamiltonian for $N$ bosons, interacting with a potential rescaled in the mean-field manner $--a\_N N^{2β--1} w(N^β x), with $w$ a positive function such that $\int\_{\mathbb{R}^2} w(x) dx = 1$. Assuming that $β< 1/2$ and that $a\_N \to a\_*$ sufficiently slowly, we prove that the many-body system is fully condensed on the Gross-Pitaevskii ground state in the limit $N \to \infty$.

Semi-classical limit of the Levy-Lieb functional in Density Functional Theory

In a recent work, Bindini and De Pascale have introduced a regularization of $N$-particle symmetric probabilities which preserves their one-particle marginals. In this short note, we extend their construction to mixed quantum fermionic states. This enables us to prove the convergence of the Levy-Lieb functional in Density Functional Theory , to the corresponding multi-marginal optimal transport in the semi-classical limit. Our result holds for mixed states of any particle number $N$, with or without spin.

Statistical Mechanics of the Uniform Electron Gas

In this paper we define and study the classical Uniform Electron Gas (UEG), a system of infinitely many electrons whose density is constant everywhere in space. The UEG is defined differently from Jellium, which has a positive constant background but no constraint on the density. We prove that the UEG arises in Density Functional Theory in the limit of a slowly varying density, minimizing the indirect Coulomb energy. We also construct the quantum UEG and compare it to the classical UEG at low density.

Existence of Hartree-Fock excited states for atoms and molecules

For neutral and positively charged atoms and molecules, we prove the existence of infinitely many Hartree-Fock critical points below the first energy threshold (that is, the lowest energy of the same system with one electron removed). This is the equivalent, in Hartree-Fock theory, of the famous Zhislin-Sigalov theorem which states the existence of infinitely many eigenvalues below the bottom of the essential spectrum of the $N$-particle linear Schr{ö}dinger operator. Our result improves a theorem of Lions in 1987 who already constructed infinitely many Hartree-Fock critical points, but with much higher energy. Our main contribution is the proof that the Hartree-Fock functional satisfies the Palais-Smale property below the first energy threshold. We then use minimax methods in the $N$-particle space, instead of working in the one-particle space.

Derivation of the magnetic Euler-Heisenberg energy

In quantum field theory, the vacuum is a fluctuating medium which behaves as a nonlinear polarizable material. In this article, we perform the first rigorous derivation of the magnetic Euler-Heisenberg effective energy, a nonlinear functional that describes the effective fluctuations of the quantum vacuum in a classical magnetic field. We start from a classical magnetic field in interaction with a quan-tized Dirac field in its ground state, and we study a limit in which the classical magnetic field is slowly varying. After a change of scales, this is equivalent to a semi-classical limit $\hbar\to0$, with a strong magnetic field of order $1/\hbar$. In this regime, we prove that the energy of Dirac's polarized vacuum converges to the Euler-Heisenberg functional. The model has ultraviolet divergences, which we regularize using the Pauli-Villars method. We also discuss how to remove the regularization of the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian, using charge renormaliza-tion, perturbatively to any order of the coupling constant.

Coulomb potentials and Taylor expansions in Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

We investigate when Taylor expansions can be used to prove the Runge-Gross Theorem, which is at the foundation of Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT). We start with a general analysis of the conditions for the Runge-Gross argument, especially the time-differentiability of the density. The latter should be questioned in the presence of singular (e.g. Coulomb) potentials. Then, we show that a singular potential in a one-body operator considerably decreases the class of time-dependent external potentials to which the original argument can be applied. A two-body singularity has an even stronger impact and an external potential is essentially incompatible with it. For the Coulomb interaction and all reasonable initial many-body states, the Taylor expansion only exists to a finite order, except for constant external potentials. Therefore, high-order Taylor expansions are not the right tool to study atoms and molecules in TDDFT.

Semi-classical Dirac vacuum polarisation in a scalar field

We study vacuum polarisation effects of a Dirac field coupled to an external scalar field and derive a semi-classical expansion of the regu-larised vacuum energy. The leading order of this expansion is given by a classical formula due to Chin, Lee-Wick and Walecka, for which our result provides the first rigorous proof. We then discuss applications to the non-relativistic large-coupling limit of an interacting system, and to the stability of homogeneous systems.

Bose Gases at Positive Temperature and Non-Linear Gibbs Measures

We summarize recent results on positive temperature equilibrium states of large bosonic systems. The emphasis will be on the connection between bosonic grand-canonical thermal states and the (semi-) classical Gibbs measures on one-body quantum states built using the corresponding mean-field energy functionals. An illustrative comparison with the case of "distinguishable" particles (boltzons) is provided.

A note on 2D focusing many-boson systems

We consider a 2D quantum system of $N$ bosons in a trapping potential $|x|^s$, interacting via a pair potential of the form $N^{2β-1} w(N^βx)$. We show that for all $0 \textless{} β\textless{} (s+1)/(s+2)$, the leading order behavior of ground states of the many-body system is described in the large $N$ limit by the corresponding cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger energy functional. Our result covers the focusing case ($w \leq 0$) where even the stability of the many-body system is not obvious. This answers an open question mentioned by X.~Chen and J.~Holmer for harmonic traps ($s=2$). Together with the BBGKY hierarchy approach used by these authors, our result implies the convergence of the many-body quantum dynamics to the focusing NLS equation with harmonic trap for all $0 \textless{} β\textless{} 3/4$.

Mean-field limit of Bose systems: rigorous results

We review recent results about the derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and of the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum, starting from many-body quantum mechanics. We focus on the mean-field regime, where the interaction is multiplied by a coupling constant of order 1/N where N is the number of particles in the system.

The Crystallization Conjecture: A Review

In this article we describe the crystallization conjecture. It states that, in appropriate physical conditions, interacting particles always place themselves into periodic configurations, breaking thereby the natural translation-invariance of the system. This famous problem is still largely open. Mathematically, it amounts to studying the minima of a real-valued function defined on $\mathbb{R}^{3N}$ where $N$ is the number of particles, which tends to infinity. We review the existing literature and mention several related open problems, of which many have not been thoroughly studied.

The mean-field approximation and the non-linear Schrödinger functional for trapped Bose gases

We study the ground state of a trapped Bose gas, starting from the full many-body Schr{ö}dinger Hamiltonian, and derive the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger energy functional in the limit of large particle number, when the interaction potential converges slowly to a Dirac delta function. Our method is based on quantitative estimates on the discrepancy between the full many-body energy and its mean-field approximation using Hartree states. These are proved using finite dimensional localization and a quantitative version of the quantum de Finetti theorem. Our approach covers the case of attractive interactions in the regime of stability. In particular, our main new result is a derivation of the 2D attractive nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger ground state.

A many-body RAGE theorem

We prove a generalized version of the RAGE theorem for N-body quantum systems. The result states that only bound states of systems with $0\leq n\leq N$ particles persist in the long time average. The limit is formulated by means of an appropriate weak topology for many-body systems, which was introduced by the second author in a previous work, and is based on reduced density matrices. This topology is connected to the weak-* topology of states on the algebras of canonical commutation or anti-commutation relations, and we give a formulation of our main result in this setting.

Fluctuations around Hartree states in the mean-field regime

We consider the dynamics of a large system of N interacting bosons in the mean-field regime where the interaction is of order 1/N. We prove that the fluctuations around the nonlinear Hartree state are generated by an effective quadratic Hamiltonian in Fock space, which is derived from Bogoliubov's approximation. We use a direct method in the N-particle space, which is different from the one based on coherent states in Fock space.

Derivation of nonlinear Gibbs measures from many-body quantum mechanics

We prove that nonlinear Gibbs measures can be obtained from the corresponding many-body, grand-canonical, quantum Gibbs states, in a mean-field limit where the temperature T diverges and the interaction behaves as 1/T. We proceed by characterizing the interacting Gibbs state as minimizing a functional counting the free-energy relatively to the non-interacting case. We then perform an infinite-dimensional analogue of phase-space semiclassical analysis, using fine properties of the quantum relative entropy, the link between quantum de Finetti measures and upper/lower symbols in a coherent state basis, as well as Berezin-Lieb type inequalities. Our results cover the measure built on the defocusing nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger functional on a finite interval, as well as smoother interactions in dimensions d\textgreater{}1.

Improved Lieb-Oxford exchange-correlation inequality with gradient correction

We prove a Lieb-Oxford-type inequality on the indirect part of the Coulomb energy of a general many-particle quantum state, with a lower constant than the original statement but involving an additional gradient correction. The result is similar to a recent inequality of Benguria, Bley and Loss, except that the correction term is purely local, which is more usual in density functional theory. In an appendix, we discuss the connection between the indirect energy and the classical Jellium energy for constant densities. We show that they differ by an explicit shift due to the long range of the Coulomb potential.

Remarks on the quantum de Finetti theorem for bosonic systems

The quantum de Finetti theorem asserts that the k-body density matrices of a N-body bosonic state approach a convex combination of Hartree states (pure tensor powers) when N is large and k fixed. In this note we review a construction due to Christandl, Mitchison, König and Renner valid for finite dimensional Hilbert spaces, which gives a quantitative version of the theorem. We first propose a variant of their proof that leads to a slightly improved estimate. Next we provide an alternative proof of an explicit formula due to Chiribella, which gives the density matrices of the constructed state as a function of those of the original state.
