Duality of Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formulations for integrable systems

We introduce the concept of Hamiltonian potential variables to map Hamiltonian operators into symplectic operators in a dual space. This generalises the classical trick of switching to a potential variable to obtain a Lagrangian density for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. Building on this concept, we present the Lagrangian structure for bi-Hamiltonian systems, discuss the Lenard scheme in the symplectic formalisms, and apply this to construct pairs of Lagrangian multiforms. We discuss the key model of the KdV equation and some dispersionless limits of it. We present a pair of Lagrangian multiforms for these equations, one of which is new. We also consider the examples of polytropic gas dynamics and the constant astigmatism equation, for which no Lagrangian multiforms were previously known.

Lagrangian multiforms and dispersionless integrable systems

We demonstrate that interesting examples of Lagrangian multiforms appear naturally in the theory of multidimensional dispersionless integrable systems as (a) higher-order conservation laws of linearly degenerate PDEs in 3D, and (b) in the context of Gibbons-Tsarev equations governing hydrodynamic reductions of heavenly type equations in 4D.

Discrete Lagrangian Multiforms for ABS Equations I: Quad Equations

Discrete Lagrangian multiform theory is a variational perspective on lattice equations that are integrable in the sense of multidimensional consistency. The Lagrangian multiforms for the equations of the ABS classification formed the start of this theory, but the Lagrangian multiforms that are usually considered in this context produce equations that are slightly weaker than the ABS equations. In this work, we present alternative Lagrangian multiforms that have Euler-Lagrange equations equivalent to the ABS equations. In addition, the treatment of the ABS Lagrangian multiforms in the existing literature fails to acknowledge that the complex functions in their definitions have branch cuts. The choice of branch affects both the existence of an additive three-leg form for the ABS equations and the closure property of the Lagrangian multiforms. We give counterexamples for both these properties, but we recover them by including integer-valued fields, related to the branch choices, in the action sums.

Discrete Lagrangian Multiforms for ABS Equations II: Tetrahedron and Octahedron Equations

We present four types of discrete Lagrangian 2-form associated to the integrable quad equations of the ABS list. These include the triangle Lagrangian that has traditionally been used in the Lagrangian multiform description of ABS equations, the trident Lagrangian that was central to Part I of this paper, and two Lagrangians that have not been studied in the multiform setting. Two of the Lagrangian 2-forms have the quad equations, or a system equivalent to the quad equations, as their Euler-Lagrange equations, and one produces the tetrahedron equations. This is in contrast to the triangle Lagrangian 2-form, which produces equations that are weaker than the quad equations (they are equivalent to two octahedron equations). We use relations between the Lagrangian 2-forms to prove that the system of quad equations is equivalent to the combined system of tetrahedron and octahedron equations. Furthermore, for each of the Lagrangian 2-forms, we study the double zero property of the exterior derivative. In particular, this gives a possible variational interpretation to the octahedron equations.

Lagrangian multiforms on Lie groups and non-commuting flows

We describe a variational framework for non-commuting flows, extending the theories of Lagrangian multiforms and pluri-Lagrangian systems, which have gained prominence in recent years as a variational description of integrable systems in the sense of multidimensional consistency. In the context of non-commuting flows, the manifold of independent variables, often called multi-time, is a Lie group whose bracket structure corresponds to the commutation relations between the vector fields generating the flows. Natural examples are provided by superintegrable systems for the case of Lagrangian 1-form structures, and integrable hierarchies on loop groups in the case of Lagrangian 2-forms. As particular examples we discuss the Kepler problem, the rational Calogero-Moser system, and a generalisation of the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur system with non-commuting flows. We view this endeavour as a first step towards a purely variational approach to Lie group actions on manifolds.

Semi-discrete Lagrangian 2-forms and the Toda hierarchy

We present a variational theory of integrable differential-difference equations (semi-discrete integrable systems). This is a natural extension of the ideas known by the names "Lagrangian multiforms" and "Pluri-Lagrangian systems", which have previously been established in both the fully discrete and fully continuous cases. The main feature of these ideas is to capture a hierarchy of commuting equations in a single variational principle. Our main example to illustrate the new semi-discrete theory of Lagrangian multiforms is the Toda lattice. This ODE describes the evolution in continuous time of a 1-dimensional lattice of particles with nearest-neighbour interaction. It is part of an integrable hierarchy of ODEs, each of which involves a derivative with respect to a continuous variable and a number of lattice shifts. We will use the Lagrangian multiform theory to derive PDEs in the continuous variables of the Toda hierarchy, which do not involve any lattice shifts. As a second example, we briefly discuss the semi-discrete potential KdV equation, which is related to the Volterra lattice.

Hamiltonian structures for integrable hierarchies of Lagrangian PDEs

Many integrable hierarchies of differential equations allow a variational description, called a Lagrangian multiform or a pluri-Lagrangian structure. The fundamental object in this theory is not a Lagrange function but a differential $d$-form that is integrated over arbitrary $d$-dimensional submanifolds. All such action integrals must be stationary for a field to be a solution to the pluri-Lagrangian problem. In this paper we present a procedure to obtain Hamiltonian structures from the pluri-Lagrangian formulation of an integrable hierarchy of PDEs. As a prelude, we review a similar procedure for integrable ODEs. We show that exterior derivative of the Lagrangian $d$-form is closely related to the Poisson brackets between the corresponding Hamilton functions. In the ODE (Lagrangian 1-form) case we discuss as examples the Toda hierarchy and the Kepler problem. As examples for the PDE (Lagrangian 2-form) case we present the potential and Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries hierarchies, as well as the Boussinesq hierarchy.

Superconvergence of Galerkin variational integrators

We study the order of convergence of Galerkin variational integrators for ordinary differential equations. Galerkin variational integrators approximate a variational (Lagrangian) problem by restricting the space of curves to the set of polynomials of degree at most $s$ and approximating the action integral using a quadrature rule. We show that, if the quadrature rule is sufficiently accurate, the order of the integrators thus obtained is $2s$.

Variational symmetries and pluri-Lagrangian structures for integrable hierarchies of PDEs

We investigate the relation between pluri-Lagrangian hierarchies of $2$-dimensional partial differential equations and their variational symmetries. The aim is to generalize to the case of partial differential equations the recent findings in [Petrera, Suris. J. Nonlinear Math. Phys. 24:sup1, 121--145 (2017)] for ordinary differential equations. We consider hierarchies of $2$-dimensional Lagrangian PDEs (many of which have a natural $(1+1)$-dimensional space-time interpretation) and show that if the flow of each PDE is a variational symmetry of all others, then there exists a pluri-Lagrangian 2-form for the hierarchy. The corresponding multi-time Euler-Lagrange equations coincide with the original system supplied with commuting evolutionary flows induced by the variational symmetries.

Structure preserving discretization of time-reparametrized Hamiltonian systems with application to nonholonomic mechanics

We propose a discretization of vector fields that are Hamiltonian up to multiplication by a positive function on the phase space that may be interpreted as a time reparametrization. We prove that our method is structure preserving in the sense that the discrete flow is interpolated to arbitrary order by the flow of a continuous system possessing the same structure. In particular, our discretization preserves a smooth measure on the phase space to arbitrary order. We present applications to a remarkable class of nonholonomic mechanical systems that allow Hamiltonization. To our best knowledge, these results provide the first occurrence in the literature of a measure preserving discretization of measure preserving nonholonomic systems.

Numerical integration in celestial mechanics: a case for contact geometry

Several dynamical systems of interest in celestial mechanics can be written in the form of a Newton equation with time-dependent damping, linear in the velocities. For instance, the modified Kepler problem, the spin-orbit model and the Lane-Emden equation all belong to such class. In this work we start an investigation of these models from the point of view of contact geometry. In particular we focus on the (contact) Hamiltonisation of these models and on the construction of the corresponding geometric integrators.

Contact variational integrators

We present geometric numerical integrators for contact flows that stem from a discretization of Herglotz' variational principle. First we show that the resulting discrete map is a contact transformation and that any contact map can be derived from a variational principle. Then we discuss the backward error analysis of our variational integrators, including the construction of a modified Lagrangian. Throughout the paper we use the damped harmonic oscillator as a benchmark example to compare our integrators to their symplectic analogues.

A variational perspective on continuum limits of ABS and lattice GD equations

A pluri-Lagrangian structure is an attribute of integrability for lattice equations and for hierarchies of differential equations. It combines the notion of multi-dimensional consistency (in the discrete case) or commutativity of the flows (in the continuous case) with a variational principle. Recently we developed a continuum limit procedure for pluri-Lagrangian systems, which we now apply to most of the ABS list and some members of the lattice Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy. We obtain pluri-Lagrangian structures for many hierarchies of integrable PDEs for which such structures where previously unknown. This includes the Krichever-Novikov hierarchy, the double hierarchy of sine-Gordon and modified KdV equations, and a first example of a continuous multi-component pluri-Lagrangian system.

Continuum limits of pluri-Lagrangian systems

A pluri-Lagrangian (or Lagrangian multiform) structure is an attribute of integrability that has mainly been studied in the context of multidimensionally consistent lattice equations. It unifies multidimensional consistency with the variational character of the equations. An analogous continuous structure exists for integrable hierarchies of differential equations. We present a continuum limit procedure for pluri-Lagrangian systems. In this procedure the lattice parameters are interpreted as Miwa variables, describing a particular embedding in continuous multi-time of the mesh on which the discrete system lives. Then we seek differential equations whose solutions interpolate the embedded discrete solutions. The continuous systems found this way are hierarchies of differential equations. We show that this continuum limit can also be applied to the corresponding pluri-Lagrangian structures. We apply our method to the discrete Toda lattice and to equations H1 and Q1$_{δ= 0}$ from the ABS list.

Modified equations for variational integrators applied to Lagrangians linear in velocities

Variational integrators applied to degenerate Lagrangians that are linear in the velocities are two-step methods. The system of modified equations for a two-step method consists of the principal modified equation and one additional equation describing parasitic oscillations. We observe that a Lagrangian for the principal modified equation can be constructed using the same technique as in the case of non-degenerate Lagrangians. Furthermore, we construct the full system of modified equations by doubling the dimension of the discrete system in such a way that the principal modified equation of the extended system coincides with the full system of modified equations of the original system. We show that the extended discrete system is Lagrangian, which leads to a construction of a Lagrangian for the full system of modified equations.

Modified equations and the Basel problem

Discretizations of differential equations are often studied through their modified equation. This is a differential equation, usually obtained as a power series, with solutions that exactly interpolate the discretization. By comparing the Störmer-Verlet discretization of the harmonic oscillator with its modified equation, we obtain a relatively simple derivation of the expansion \[ \left( \arcsin \frac{h}{2} \right)^2 = \frac{1}{2} \sum_{k=1}^\infty \frac{(k-1)!^2}{(2k)!} h^{2k}, \] which can be used to show that $ζ(2) = \frac{π^2}{6}$.

Modified Equations for Variational Integrators

It is well-known that if a symplectic integrator is applied to a Hamiltonian system, then the modified equation, whose solutions interpolate the numerical solutions, is again Hamiltonian. We investigate this property from the variational side. We present a technique to construct a Lagrangian for the modified equation from the discrete Lagrangian of a variational integrator.

Numerical precession in variational discretizations of the Kepler problem

Kepler's first law states that the orbit of a point mass with negative energy in a classical gravitational potential is an ellipse with one of its foci at the gravitational center. In numerical simulations of this system one often observes a slight precession of the ellipse around the gravitational center. Using the Lagrangian structure of modified equations and a perturbative version of Noether's theorem, we provide leading order estimates of this precession for the implicit MidPoint rule (MP) and the Störmer-Verlet method (SV). Based on those estimates we construct some new numerical integrators that perform significantly better than MP and SV on the Kepler problem.
