Exact SO(8) Symmetry in the Weakly-Interacting Two-Leg Ladder

A perturbative renormalization group analysis of interacting electrons on a two-leg ladder reveals that at half-filling any weakly repulsive system scales onto an exactly soluble Gross-Neveu model with a hidden SO(8) symmetry. The half-filled ground state is a Mott insulator with short-range d-wave pair correlations. We extract the exact energies, degeneracies, and quantum numbers of *all* the low energy excited multiplets. One energy (mass) m octets contains Cooper pair, magnon, and density-wave excitations, two more octets contain single-particle excitations, and a mass \sqrt{3}m antisymmetric tensor contains 28 "bound states". Exact single-particle and spin gaps are found for the lightly-doped (d-wave paired one-dimension Bose fluid) system. We also determine the four other robust phases occuring at half-filling for partially attractive interactions. All 5 phases have distinct SO(8) symmetries, but share S.C. Zhang's SO(5) as a common subgroup.

Resonant Multi-Lead Point-Contact Tunneling

We analyze a model of resonant point-contact tunneling between multiple Luttinger liquid leads. The model is a variant of the multi-channel Kondo model and can be related to the quantum Brownian motion of a particle on lattices with $π$-flux through each plaquette (in the 3-lead case, it is a honeycomb lattice with $π$-flux). By comparing the perturbative and instanton gas expansions, we find a duality property of the model. At the boundary, this duality exchanges Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions on the Tomonaga-Luttinger bosons which describe the leads; in the bulk, it exchanges the `momentum' and `winding' modes of these bosons. Over a certain range of Luttinger liquid parameter, $g$, a novel non-trivial intermediate coupling fixed point controls the low-energy physics. The finite conductance at this fixed point can be exactly computed for two special values of $g$. For larger values of $g$, there is a stable fixed point at strong coupling which has enhanced conductance resulting from an analogue of Andreev reflection at the point contact.

Transport of Surface States in the Bulk Quantum Hall Effect

The two-dimensional surface of a coupled multilayer integer quantum Hall system consists of an anisotropic chiral metal. This unusual metal is characterized by ballistic motion transverse and diffusive motion parallel (\hat{z}) to the magnetic field. Employing a network model, we calculate numerically the phase coherent two-terminal z-axis conductance and its mesoscopic fluctuations. Quasi-1d localization effects are evident in the limit of many layers. We consider the role of inelastic de-phasing effects in modifying the transport of the chiral surface sheath, discussing their importance in the recent experiments of Druist et al.

Delocalization Transition via Supersymmetry in one Dimension

We use supersymmetric (SUSY) methods to study the delocalization transition at zero energy in a one-dimensional tight-binding model of spinless fermions with particle-hole symmetric disorder. Like the McCoy-Wu random transverse-field Ising model to which it is related, the fermionic problem displays two different correlation lengths for typical and mean correlations. Using the SUSY technique, mean correlators are obtained as quantum mechanical expectation values for an U(2|1,1) ``superspin''. In the scaling limit, this quantum mechanics is closely related to a 0+1-dimensional Liouville theory, allowing an interpretation of the results in terms of simple properties of the zero-energy wavefunctions. Our primary results are the exact two-parameter scaling functions for the mean single-particle Green's functions. We also show how the Liouville quantum mechanics approach can be extended to obtain the full set of multifractal scaling exponents τ(q), y(q) at criticality. A thorough understanding of the unusual features of the present theory may be useful in applying SUSY to other delocalization transitions.

Correlation Effects in Carbon Nanotubes

We consider the effects of Coulomb interactions on single-wall carbon nanotubes using an on-site Hubbard interaction, u. For the (N,N) armchair tubes the low energy theory is shown to be identical to a 2-chain Hubbard model at half-filling, with an effective interaction u_N = u/N. Umklapp scattering leads to gaps in the spectrum of charge and spin excitations which are exponentially small for large N. Above the gaps the intrinsic nanotube resistivity due to these scattering processes is linear in temperature, as observed experimentally. The presence of "d-wave" superconductivity in the 2-chain Hubbard model away from half-filling suggests that doped armchair nanotubes might exhibit superconductity with a purely electronic mechanism.

Criticality in the two-dimensional random-bond Ising model

The two-dimensional (2D) random-bond Ising model has a novel multicritical point on the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase boundary. This random phase transition is one of the simplest examples of a 2D critical point occurring at both finite temperatures and disorder strength. We study the associated critical properties, by mapping the random 2D Ising model onto a network model. The model closely resembles network models of quantum Hall plateau transitions, but has different symmetries. Numerical transfer matrix calculations enable us to obtain estimates for the critical exponents at the random Ising phase transition. The values are consistent with recent estimates obtained from high-temperature series.

Conductance fluctuations at the integer quantum Hall plateau transition

We study numerically conductance fluctuations near the integer quantum Hall effect plateau transition. The system is presumed to be in a mesoscopic regime, with phase coherence length comparable to the system size. We focus on a two-terminal conductance G for square samples, considering both periodic and open boundary conditions transverse to the current. At the plateau transition, G is broadly distributed, with a distribution function close to uniform on the interval between zero and one in units of e^2/h. Our results are consistent with a recent experiment by Cobden and Kogan on a mesoscopic quantum Hall effect sample.

Transport in a one-dimensional Luttinger liquid

In this paper we review recent theoretical results for transport in a one-dimensional (1d) Luttinger liquid. For simplicity, we ignore electron spin, and focus exclusively on the case of a single-mode. Moreover, we consider only the effects of a single (or perhaps several) spatially localized impurities. Even with these restrictions, the predicted behavior is very rich, and strikingly different than for a 1d non-interacting electron gas. The method of bosonization is reviewed, with an emphasis on physical motivation, rather than mathematical rigor. Transport through a single impurity is reviewed from several different perspectives, as a pinned strongly interacting ``Wigner" crystal and in the limit of weak interactions. The existence of fractionally charged quasiparticles is also revealed. Inter-edge tunnelling in the quantum Hall effect, and charge fluctuations in a quantum dot under the conditions of Coulomb blockade are considered as examples of the developed techniques.

Chiral Metal as a Ferromagnetic Super Spin Chain

The electrons on the surface of a disordered multi-layer integer quantum Hall system constitute an unusual chiral metal with ballistic motion transverse to the field, and diffusive motion parallel to it. We present a non-perturbative analytic treatment of an appropriate model, consisting of disordered chiral Fermions in two dimensions. A supersymmetric generating functional is set up for the correlation functions of this system. The strong disorder limit is mapped into a supersymmetric spin chain, with ferromagnetic exchange coupling, reflecting the electron's chiral motion. The ferromagnetic ground state and the spin wave excitations, corresponding to the diffusion modes of the chiral metal, are found exactly. The parametric density of states correlator in the ergodic limit is computed from a Boltzmann-weighted sum over low energy spin states. The result is of a universal form and coincides with that for a Hermitian random matrix.

Line Junctions in the Quantum Hall Effect

A long skinny gate across a fractional quantum Hall fluid at filling $ν=1/m$ with odd integer $m$, creates a novel one-dimensional (1d) system which is isomorphic to a disordered 1d electron gas with {\it attractive} interactions. By varying the gate potential along such a line junction, it should be possible to tune through the 1d localization transition, predicted for an attractively interacting electron gas. The key signature of this 1d metal-insulator transition is the temperature dependence of the conductivity, which diverges as a power of temperature in the metallic phase, and vanishes rapidly in the insulator. We show that the 1d conductivity can be extracted from a standard Hall transport measurement, in the regime where the Hall conductance is close to its quantized value. A line junction in a $ν=2/3$ quantized Hall fluid is predicted to exhibit a similar localization transition.

Dynamical Transition in Sliding Charge-density Waves with Quenched Disorder

We have studied numerically the dynamics of sliding charge-density waves (CDWs) in the presence of impurities in d=1,2. The model considered exhibits a first order dynamical transition at a critical driving force $F_c$ between ``rough'' (disorder dominated) $(F F_c)$ sliding phases where disorder is washed out by the external drive. The effective model for the sliding CDWs in the presence of impurities can be mapped onto that of a magnetic flux line pinned by columnar defects and tilted by an applied field. The dynamical transition of sliding CDWs corresponds to the transverse Meissner effect of the tilted flux line.

Quantized Thermal Transport in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We analyze thermal transport in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), employing a Luttinger liquid model of edge states. Impurity mediated inter-channel scattering events are incorporated in a hydrodynamic description of heat and charge transport. The thermal Hall conductance, $K_H$, is shown to provide a new and universal characterization of the FQHE state, and reveals non-trivial information about the edge structure. The Lorenz ratio between thermal and electrical Hall conductances {\it violates} the free-electron Wiedemann-Franz law, and for some fractional states is predicted to be {\it negative}. We argue that thermal transport may provide a unique way to detect the presence of the elusive upstream propagating modes, predicted for fractions such as $ν=2/3$ and $ν=3/5$.

Dynamics of a heavy particle in a Luttinger liquid

We study the dynamics of a heavy particle of mass $M$ moving in a one-dimensional repulsively interacting Fermi gas. The Fermi gas is described using the Luttinger model and bosonization. By transforming to a frame co-moving with the heavy particle, we map the model onto a generalized ``quantum impurity problem". A renormalization group calculation reveals a crossover from strong to weak coupling upon scaling down in temperature. Above the crossover temperature scale $T^*=(m/M) E_F$, the particle's mobility, $μ$, is found to be (roughly) temperature independent and proportional to the dimensionless conductance, $g$, characterizing the 1d Luttinger liquid. Here $m$($<<M$) is the fermion mass, and $E_F$ is the Fermi energy. Below $T^*$, in the weak coupling regime, the mobility grows and diverges as $μ(T) \sim T^{-4}$ in $T \to 0$ limit.

Chiral Surface States in the Bulk Quantum Hall Effect

In layered samples which exhibit a bulk quantum Hall effect (QHE), a two-dimensional (2d) surface ``sheath" of gapless excitations is expected. These excitations comprise a novel 2d chiral quantum liquid which should dominate the low temperature transport along the field (z-axis). For the integer QHE, we show that localization effects are completely absent in the ``sheath", giving a metallic z-axis conductivity. For fractional filling $ν=1/3$, the ``sheath" is a 2d non-Fermi liquid, with incoherent z-axis transport and $σ_{zz} \sim T^3$. Experimental implications for the Bechgaard salts are discussed.

Thermal transport in a Luttinger liquid

We study thermal transport in a one-dimensional (1d) interacting electron gas, employing the Luttinger liquid model. Both thermal conductance and thermopower are analyzed for a pure 1d gas and with impurities. The universal ratio of electrical to thermal conductance in a Fermi-liquid - the Wiedeman-Franz law - is modified, whereas the thermopower is still linear in temperature. For a single impurity the Lorenz number is given by $L(T \rightarrow 0) = 3L_0/(2g+g^2)$ - with $L_0$ the Fermi liquid value - and the conductance $1/2 < g < 1$. For $g<1/2$ the Lorenz number {\it diverges} as $T \rightarrow 0$. Possible relevance to thermal transport in conducting polymer systems is discussed.

Contacts and Edge State Equilibration in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We develop a simple kinetic equation description of edge state dynamics in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), which allows us to examine in detail equilibration processes between multiple edge modes. As in the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE), inter-mode equilibration is a prerequisite for quantization of the Hall conductance. Two sources for such equilibration are considered: Edge impurity scattering and equilibration by the electrical contacts. Several specific models for electrical contacts are introduced and analyzed. For FQHE states in which edge channels move in both directions, such as $ν=2/3$, these models for the electrical contacts {\it do not} equilibrate the edge modes, resulting in a non-quantized Hall conductance, even in a four-terminal measurement. Inclusion of edge-impurity scattering, which {\it directly} transfers charge between channels, is shown to restore the four-terminal quantized conductance. For specific filling factors, notably $ν=4/5$ and $ν=4/3$, the equilibration length due to impurity scattering diverges in the zero temperature limit, which should lead to a breakdown of quantization for small samples at low temperatures. Experimental implications are discussed.

Temporal Order in Dirty Driven Periodic Media

We consider the non--equilibrium steady states of a driven charge density wave in the presence of impurities and noise. In three dimensions at strong drive, a true dynamical phase transition into a temporally periodic state with quasi--long--range translational order is predicted. In two dimensions, impurity induced phase slips are argued to destroy the periodic ``moving solid'' phase. Implications for narrow band noise measurements and relevance to other driven periodic media, e.g. vortex lattices, are discussed.

Weak Coupling Phase Diagram of the Two Chain Hubbard Model

We present a general method for determining the phase diagram of systems of a finite number of one dimensional Hubbard--like systems coupled by single--particle hopping with weak interactions. The technique is illustrated by detailed calculations for the two--chain Hubbard model, providing the first controlled results for arbitrary doping and inter-chain hopping. Of nine possible states which could occur in such a spin--$1/2$ ladder, we find seven at weak coupling. We discuss the conditions under which the model can be regarded as a one--dimensional analog of a superconductor.
