Non-Relativistic Parity-Violating Hydrodynamics in Two Spatial Dimensions

We construct the non-relativistic parity-violating hydrodynamic description of a two-dimensional dissipative, normal fluid in presence of small U(1) background fields and vorticity. This is achieved by taking the non-relativistic limit of the recently developed relativistic hydrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions. We identify and interpret the resulting parity-violating contributions to the non-relativistic constitutive relations, which include the Hall current flowing perpendicular to the temperature gradient, the Hall viscosity and the Leduc-Righi energy current. Also a comparison of our findings is made with the non-relativistic parity-violating hydrodynamics obtained from a light-cone dimensional reduction.

Non-Equilibrium Field Dynamics of an Honest Holographic Superconductor

Most holographic models of superconducting systems neglect the effects of dynamical boundary gauge fields during the process of spontaneous symmetry-breaking. Usually a global symmetry gets broken. This yields a superfluid, which then is gauged "weakly" afterwards. In this work we build (and probe the dynamics of) a holographic model in which a local boundary symmetry is spontaneously broken instead. We compute two-point functions of dynamical non-Abelian gauge fields in the normal and in the broken phase, and find non-trivial gapless modes. Our AdS3 gravity dual realizes a p-wave superconductor in (1+1) dimensions. The ground state of this model also breaks (1+1)-dimensional parity spontaneously, while the Hamiltonian is parity-invariant. We discuss possible implications of our results for a wider class of holographic liquids.

Hyperscaling-Violation on Probe D-Branes

For the field theories dual to D3/D7- and D3/D5-brane systems we find non-relativistic finite density fixed points exhibiting a violation of hyperscaling. This violation is measured by the critical exponent $θ=1$ while the dynamical critical exponent is $z=2$. At zero temperature we compute the thermodynamic potentials, the speed of normal sound, and the speed of zero sound for both these massive D3/D(2n+1)-brane systems near their non-relativistic fixed points. Moreover, we determine the first correction to the free energy for small temperatures yielding the critical exponents $α$ and $ν$.

Towards hydrodynamics without an entropy current

We present a generating functional which describes the equilibrium thermodynamic response of a relativistic system to external sources. A variational principle gives rise to constraints on the response parameters of relativistic hydrodynamics without making use of an entropy current. Our method reproduces and extends results available in the literature. It also provides a technique for efficiently computing n-point zero-frequency hydrodynamic correlation functions without the need to solve the equations of hydrodynamics.

SL(2,Z) Action on AdS/BCFT and Hall Conductivities

We study the response of a conserved current to external electromagnetic fields in a holographic system with boundaries using the recently proposed AdS/BCFT (boundary conformal field theory) framework. This, in particular, allows us to extract the Hall current, the Hall conductivity, plus some potentially novel transport coefficients, and relations among them. We also analyze the action of SL(2,Z) duality in the gravity bulk, which acts non-trivially on the conductivity of the BCFT. Finally we consider a type IIA string theory embedding of our setup.

Parity-Violating Hydrodynamics in 2+1 Dimensions

We study relativistic hydrodynamics of normal fluids in two spatial dimensions. When the microscopic theory breaks parity, extra transport coefficients appear in the hydrodynamic regime, including the Hall viscosity, and the anomalous Hall conductivity. In this work we classify all the transport coefficients in first order hydrodynamics. We then use properties of response functions and the positivity of entropy production to restrict the possible coefficients in the constitutive relations. All the parity-breaking transport coefficients are dissipationless, and some of them are related to the thermodynamic response to an external magnetic field and to vorticity. In addition, we give a holographic example of a strongly interacting relativistic fluid where the parity-violating transport coefficients are computable.

Sum Rules from an Extra Dimension

Using the gravity side of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we investigate the analytic properties of thermal retarded Green's functions for scalars, conserved currents, the stress tensor, and massless fermions. We provide some results concerning their large and small frequency behavior and their pole structure. From these results, it is straightforward to prove the validity of various sum rules on the field theory side of the duality. We introduce a novel contraction mapping we use to study the large frequency behavior of the Green's functions.

Fluid dynamics of R-charged black holes

We construct electrically charged AdS_5 black hole solutions whose charge, mass and boost-parameters vary slowly with the space-time coordinates. From the perspective of the dual theory, these are equivalent to hydrodynamic configurations with varying chemical potential, temperature and velocity fields. We compute the boundary theory transport coefficients associated with a derivative expansion of the energy momentum tensor and R-charge current up to second order. In particular, we find a first order transport coefficient associated with the axial component of the current.

Fermionic Operator Mixing in Holographic p-wave Superfluids

We use gauge-gravity duality to compute spectral functions of fermionic operators in a strongly-coupled defect field theory in p-wave superfluid states. The field theory is (3+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory, in the 't Hooft limit and with large coupling, coupled to two massless flavors of (2+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric matter. We show that a sufficiently large chemical potential for a U(1) subgroup of the global SU(2) isospin symmetry triggers a phase transition to a p-wave superfluid state, and in that state we compute spectral functions for the fermionic superpartners of mesons valued in the adjoint of SU(2) isospin. In the spectral functions we see the breaking of rotational symmetry and the emergence of a Fermi surface comprised of isolated points as we cool the system through the superfluid phase transition. The dual gravitational description is two coincident probe D5-branes in AdS5 x S5 with non-trivial worldvolume SU(2) gauge fields. We extract spectral functions from solutions of the linearized equations of motion for the D5-branes' worldvolume fermions, which couple to one another through the worldvolume gauge field. We develop an efficient method to compute retarded Green's functions from a system of coupled bulk fermions. We also perform the holographic renormalization of free bulk fermions in any asymptotically Euclidean AdS space.

Flavor Superconductivity & Superfluidity

In these lecture notes we derive a generic holographic string theory realization of a p-wave superconductor and superfluid. For this purpose we also review basic D-brane physics, gauge/gravity methods at finite temperature, key concepts of superconductivity and recent progress in distinct realizations of holographic superconductors and superfluids. Then we focus on a D3/D7-brane construction yielding a superconducting or superfluid vector-condensate. The corresponding gauge theory is 3+1-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(N) color and SU(2) flavor symmetry. It shows a second order phase transition to a phase in which a U(1) subgroup of the SU(2) symmetry is spontaneously broken and typical superconductivity signatures emerge, such as a conductivity (pseudo-)gap and the Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect. Condensates of this nature are comparable to those recently found experimentally in p-wave superconductors such as a ruthenate compound. A string picture of the pairing mechanism and condensation is given using the exact knowledge of the corresponding field theory degrees of freedom.

Holographic Operator Mixing and Quasinormal Modes on the Brane

We provide a framework for calculating holographic Green's functions from general bilinear actions and fields obeying coupled differential equations in the bulk. The matrix-valued spectral function is shown to be independent of the radial bulk coordinate. Applying this framework we improve the analysis of fluctuations in the D3/D7 system at finite baryon density, where the longitudinal perturbations of the world-volume gauge field couple to the scalar fluctuations of the brane embedding. We compute the spectral function and show how its properties are related to the quasinormal mode spectrum. We study the crossover from the hydrodynamic diffusive to the reactive regime and the movement of quasinormal modes as functions of temperature and density. We also compute their dispersion relations and find that they asymptote to the lightcone for large momenta.

Quasinormal modes of massive charged flavor branes

We present an analysis and classification of vector and scalar fluctuations in a D3/D7 brane setup at finite termperature and baryon density. The system is dual to an N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(N_c) gauge group and N_f hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation in the quenched approximation. We improve significantly over previous results on the quasinormal mode spectrum of D7 branes and stress their novel physical interpretation. Amongst our findings is a new purely imaginary scalar mode that becomes tachyonic at sufficiently low temperature and baryon density. We establish the existence of a critical density above which the scalar mode stays in the stable regime for all temperatures. In the vector sector we study the crossover from the hydrodynamic to the quasiparticle regime and find that it moves to shorter wavelengths for lower temperatures. At zero baryon density the quasinormal modes move toward distinct discrete attractor frequencies that depend on the momentum as we increase the temperature. At finite baryon density, however, the trajectories show a turning behavior such that for low temperature the quasinormal mode spectrum approaches the spectrum of the supersymmetric zero temperature normal modes. We interpret this as resolution of the singular quasinormal mode spectrum that appears at the limiting D7 brane embedding at vanishing baryon density.

Superconductivity from gauge/gravity duality with flavor

We consider thermal strongly-coupled N=2 SYM theory with fundamental matter at finite isospin chemical potential. Using gauge/gravity duality, i.e. a probe of two flavor D7-branes embedded in the AdS black hole background, we find a critical temperature at which the system undergoes a second order phase transition. The critical exponent of this transition is one half and coincides with the result from mean field theory. In the thermodynamically favored phase, a flavor current acquires a vev and breaks an Abelian symmetry spontaneously. This new phase shows signatures known from superconductivity, such as an infinite dc conductivity and a gap in the frequency-dependent conductivity. The gravity setup allows for an explicit identification of the degrees of freedom in the dual field theory, as well as for a dual string picture of the condensation process.

Flavor Superconductivity from Gauge/Gravity Duality

We give a detailed account and extensions of a holographic flavor superconductivity model which we have proposed recently. The model has an explicit field theory realization as strongly coupled N=2 Super Yang-Mills theory with fundamental matter at finite temperature and finite isospin chemical potential. Using gauge/gravity duality, i.e. a probe of two flavor D7-branes in the AdS black hole background, we show that the system undergoes a second order phase transition with critical exponent 1/2. The new ground state may be interpreted as a rho meson superfluid. It shows signatures known from superconductivity, such as an infinite dc conductivity and a gap in the frequency-dependent conductivity. We present a stringy picture of the condensation mechanism in terms of a recombination of strings. We give a detailed account of the evaluation of the non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action involved using two different methods. Finally we also consider the case of massive flavors and discuss the holographic Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect in our scenario.

Hydrodynamics of Holographic Superconductors

We study the poles of the retarded Green functions of a holographic superconductor. The model shows a second order phase transition where a charged scalar operator condenses and a U(1) symmetry is spontaneously broken. The poles of the holographic Green functions are the quasinormal modes in an AdS black hole background. We study the spectrum of quasinormal frequencies in the broken phase, where we establish the appearance of a massless or hydrodynamic mode at the critical temperature as expected for a second order phase transition. In the broken phase we find the pole representing second sound. We compute the speed of second sound and its attenuation length as function of the temperature. In addition we find a pseudo diffusion mode, whose frequencies are purely imaginary but with a non-zero gap at zero momentum. This gap goes to zero at the critical temperature. As a technical side result we explain how to calculate holographic Green functions and their quasinormal modes for a set of operators that mix under the RG flow.

Holographic vector mesons from spectral functions at finite baryon or isospin density

We consider gauge/gravity duality with flavor for the finite-temperature field theory dual of the AdS-Schwarzschild black hole background with embedded D7-brane probes. In particular, we investigate spectral functions at finite baryon density in the black hole phase. We determine the resonance frequencies corresponding to meson-mass peaks as function of the quark mass over temperature ratio. We find that these frequencies have a minimum for a finite value of the quark mass. If the quotient of quark mass and temperature is increased further, the peaks move to larger frequencies. At the same time the peaks narrow, in agreement with the formation of nearly stable vector meson states which exactly reproduce the meson mass spectrum found at zero temperature. We also calculate the diffusion coefficient, which has finite value for all quark mass to temperature ratios, and exhibits a first-order phase transition. Finally we consider an isospin chemical potential and find that the spectral functions display a resonance peak splitting, similar to the isospin meson mass splitting observed in effective QCD models.

QGP thermodynamics and meson spectroscopy with AdS/CFT

In this talk we present applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence to strongly coupled systems at finite temperature and particle density. The model we investigate contains adjoint matter described by the gauge multiplet of N=4, as well as fundamental matter given by the hypermultiplet of N=2 Super Yang-Mills theory. In some aspects these systems can be thought of as models for the quark-gluon plasma. In the first part we review some properties of meson spectra obtained from these holographic models. We discuss the implications of finite temperature and particle density in these string-theory motivated setups. In particular, we find a broadening of the vector meson peaks in the relevant spectral function at finite density. However, we do not observe a movement of the resonances to lower frequencies. Moreover, we analyze the effects of strong coupling on heavy meson diffusion in medium. To do so, we make use of an effective model with dipole interaction, which is valid for heavy quarks at arbitrary coupling strength. We calculate the momentum broadening -- normalized to the in-medium mass shift -- and compare the large 't Hooft coupling AdS/CFT result with a perturbative result for weak coupling. We find that the momentum broadening is reduced at large 't Hooft coupling, leading to increased relaxation time.

Finite baryon and isospin chemical potential in AdS/CFT with flavor

We investigate the thermodynamics of a thermal field theory in presence of both a baryon and an isospin chemical potential. For this we consider a probe of several D7-branes embedded in the AdS-Schwarzschild black hole background. We determine the structure of the phase diagram and calculate the relevant thermodynamical quantities both in the canonical and in the grand canonical ensemble. We discuss how accidental symmetries present reflect themselves in the phase diagram: In the case of two flavors, for small densities, there is a rotational symmetry in the plane spanned by the baryon and isospin density which breaks down at large densities, leaving a Z_4-symmetry. Finally, we calculate vector mode spectral functions and determine their dependence on either the baryon or the isospin density. For large densities, a new excitation forms with energy below the known supersymmetric spectrum. Increasing the density further, this excitation becomes unstable. We speculate that this instability indicates a new phase of condensed mesons.
