Convergence of hydrodynamics in rapidly spinning strongly coupled plasma

We compute the radius of convergence of the linearized relativistic hydrodynamic expansion around a non-trivially rotating strongly coupled N=4 Super-Yang-Mills plasma. Our results show that the validity of hydrodynamics is sustained and can even get enhanced in a highly vortical quark-gluon plasma, such as the one produced in heavy-ion collisions. The hydrodynamic dispersion relations are computed using a rotating background that is an analytic solution of the ideal hydrodynamic equations of motion with non-vanishing angular momentum and large vorticity gradients, giving rise to a particular boost symmetry. Analytic equations for the transport coeffcients of the rotating plasma as a function of their values in a plasma at rest are given.

Chiral hydrodynamics in strong external magnetic fields

We construct the general hydrodynamic description of (3+1)-dimensional chiral charged (quantum) fluids subject to a strong external magnetic field with effective field theory methods. We determine the constitutive equations for the energy-momentum tensor and the axial charge current, in part from a generating functional. Furthermore, we derive the Kubo formulas which relate two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and charge current to 27 transport coefficients: 8 independent thermodynamic, 4 independent non-dissipative hydrodynamic, and 10 independent dissipative hydrodynamic transport coefficients. Five Onsager relations render 5 more transport coefficients dependent. We uncover four novel transport effects, which are encoded in what we call the shear-induced conductivity, the two expansion-induced longitudinal conductivities and the shear-induced Hall conductivity. Remarkably, the shear-induced Hall conductivity constitutes a novel non-dissipative transport effect. As a demonstration, we compute all transport coefficients explicitly in a strongly coupled quantum fluid via holography.

Constraints on quasinormal modes and bounds for critical points from pole-skipping

We consider a holographic thermal state and perturb it by a scalar operator whose associated real-time Green's function has only gapped poles. These gapped poles correspond to the non-hydrodynamic quasinormal modes of a massive scalar perturbation around a Schwarzschild black brane. Relations between pole-skipping points, critical points and quasinormal modes in general emerge when the mass of the scalar and hence the dual operator dimension is varied. First, this novel analysis reveals a relation between the location of a mode in the infinite tower of quasinormal modes and the number of pole-skipping points constraining its dispersion relation at imaginary momenta. Second, for the first time, we consider the radii of convergence of the derivative expansions about the gapped quasinormal modes. These convergence radii turn out to be bounded from above by the set of all pole-skipping points. Furthermore, a transition between two distinct classes of critical points occurs at a particular value for the conformal dimension, implying close relations between critical points and pole-skipping points in one of those two classes. We show numerically that all of our results are also true for gapped modes of vector and tensor operators.

A New Paradigm for Topological or Rotational Non-Abelian Gauge Fields from Einstein-Skyrme Holography

We report analytically known states at non-zero temperature which may serve as a powerful tool to reveal common topological and thermodynamic properties of systems ranging from the QCD phase diagram to topological phase transitions in condensed matter materials. In the holographically dual gravity theory, these are analytic solutions to a five-dimensional non-linear-sigma (Skyrme) model dynamically coupled to Einstein gravity. This theory is shown to be holographically dual to $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory coupled to an $SU(2)$-current. All solutions are fully backreacted asymptotically Anti-de Sitter~(AdS) black branes or holes. One family of global AdS black hole solutions contains non-Abelian gauge field configurations with positive integer Chern numbers and finite energy density. Larger Chern numbers increase the Hawking-Page transition temperature. In the holographically dual field theory this indicates a significant effect on the deconfinement phase transition. Black holes with one Hawking temperature can have distinct Chern numbers, potentially enabling topological transitions. A second family of analytic solutions, rotating black branes, is also provided. These rotating solutions induce states with propagating charge density waves in the dual field theory. We compute the Hawking temperature, entropy density, angular velocity and free energy for these black holes/branes. These correspond to thermodynamic data in the dual field theory. For these states the energy-momentum tensor, (non-)conserved current, and topological charge are interpreted.

Hydrodynamics of simply spinning black holes & hydrodynamics for spinning quantum fluids

We find hydrodynamic behavior in large simply spinning five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter black holes. These are dual to spinning quantum fluids through the AdS/CFT correspondence constructed from string theory. Due to the spatial anisotropy introduced by the angular momentum in the system, hydrodynamic transport coefficients split into one group longitudinal and another transverse to the angular momentum. Analytic expressions are provided for the two shear viscosities, the longitudinal momentum diffusion coefficient, two speeds of sound, and two sound attenuation coefficients. Known relations between these coefficients are generalized to include dependence on angular momentum. The shear viscosity to entropy density ratio varies between zero and 1/(4$π$) depending on the direction of the shear. These results can be applied to heavy ion collisions, in which the most vortical fluid was reported recently. In passing, we show that large simply spinning five-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes are perturbatively stable for all angular momenta below extremality.

Early-Stage Shear Viscosity far from Equilibrium via Holography

Shear viscosity is a crucial property of QCD matter which determines the collective behavior of the the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Extending the near-equilibrium, high-precision investigations in theory and experiment, we take into account the fact that, in a collision, the QGP is generated far from equilibrium. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study a strongly coupled plasma and find a significant impact on the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, $η/s$. In particular, we investigate the initial heating phase and find a decrease reaching down to below 60% followed by an overshoot to 110% of the near-equilibrium value. This finding might be highly relevant for the extraction of transport coefficients from anisotropic flow measurements at RHIC and LHC.

Shear transport far from equilibrium via holography

In heavy-ion collisions, the quark-gluon plasma is produced far from equilibrium. This regime is currently inaccessible by quantum chromodynamics (QCD) computations. We calculate shear transport and entropy far from equilibrium in a holographic model, defining a time-dependent ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, $η/s$. Large deviations of up to 60% from its near-equilibrium value, $1/4π$, are found for realistic situations at the Large Hadron Collider. We predict the far-from-equilibrium time-dependence of $η/s$ to substantially affect the evolution of the QCD plasma and to impact the extraction of QCD properties from flow coefficients in heavy-ion collision data.

Dispersion relations in non-relativistic two-dimensional materials from quasinormal modes in Hořava Gravity

We compute dispersion relations of non-hydrodynamic and hydrodynamic modes in a non-relativistic strongly coupled two-dimensional quantum field theory. This is achieved by numerically computing quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a particular analytically known black brane solution to 3+1-dimensional Hořava Gravity. Hořava Gravity is distinguished from Einstein Gravity by the presence of a scalar field, termed the khronon, defining a preferred time-foliation. Surprisingly, for this black brane solution, the khronon fluctuation numerically decouples from all others, having its own set of purely imaginary eigenfrequencies, for which we provide an analytic expression. All other Hořava Gravity QNMs are expressed analytically in terms of QNMs of Einstein Gravity, in units involving the khronon coupling constants and various horizons. Our numerical computation reproduces the analytically known momentum diffusion mode, and extends the analytic expression for the sound modes to a wide range of khronon coupling values. In the eikonal limit (large momentum limit), the analytically known dispersion of QNM frequencies with the momentum is reproduced by our numerics. We provide a parametrization of all QNM frequencies to fourth order in the momentum. We demonstrate perturbative stability in a wide range of coupling constants and momenta.

Correlations far from equilibrium in charged strongly coupled fluids subjected to a strong magnetic field

Within a holographic model, we calculate the time evolution of 2-point and 1-point correlation functions (of selected operators) within a charged strongly coupled system of many particles. That system is thermalizing from an anisotropic initial charged state far from equilibrium towards equilibrium while subjected to a constant external magnetic field. One main result is that thermalization times for 2-point functions are significantly (approximately three times) larger than those of 1-point functions. Magnetic field and charge amplify this difference, generally increasing thermalization times. However, there is also a competition of scales between charge density, magnetic field, and initial anisotropy, which leads to an array of qualitative changes on the 2- and 1-point functions. There appears to be a strong effect of the medium on 2-point functions at early times, but approximately none at later times. At strong magnetic fields, an apparently universal thermalization time emerges, at which all 2-point functions appear to thermalize regardless of any other scale in the system. Hence, this time scale is referred to as saturation time scale. As extremality is approached in the purely charged case, 2- and 1-point functions appear to equilibrate at infinitely late time. We also compute 2-point functions of charged operators. Our results can be taken to model thermalization in heavy ion collisions, or thermalization in selected condensed matter systems.

Universal magnetoresponse in QCD and $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

Using recent lattice data on the thermodynamics of QCD in the presence of a background magnetic field, we show that the ratio of transverse to longitudinal pressure exhibits, to good accuracy, a simple scaling behavior over a wide range of temperature and magnetic field, essentially depending only on the ratio $T/\sqrt B$. We compare this QCD response to the corresponding magnetoresponse in maximally supersymmetric Yang Mills theory. Given suitable calibrations defining the comparison, we find excellent agreement. This may be viewed as a further test of the applicability of holographic models for hot QCD.

AdS/CFT far from equilibrium in a Vaidya setup

In this paper we apply the AdS/CFT correspondence to study a strongly coupled plasma far from equilibrium with a strong emphasis on the shear behavior. The plasma serves as a model for an electrically charged quark-gluon plasma. On the gravitational side, we use an ingoing Vaidya black brane spacetime. The highest rate of mass infall is confined to a short time interval.

Quasinormal modes of charged magnetic black branes & chiral magnetic transport

We compute quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the metric and gauge field perturbations about black branes electrically and magnetically charged in the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. By the gauge/gravity correspondence, this theory is dual to a particular class of field theories with a chiral anomaly, in a thermal charged plasma state subjected to a constant external magnetic field, $B$. The QNMs are dual to the poles of the two-point functions of the energy-momentum and axial current operators, and they encode information about the dissipation and transport of charges in the plasma. Complementary to the gravity calculation, we work out the hydrodynamic description of the dual field theory in the presence of a chiral anomaly, and a constant external $B$. We find good agreement with the weak field hydrodynamics, which can extend beyond the weak $B$ regime into intermediate regimes. Furthermore, we provide results that can be tested against thermodynamics and hydrodynamics in the strong $B$ regime. We find QNMs exhibiting Landau level behavior, which become long-lived at large $B$ if the anomaly coefficient exceeds a critical magnitude. Chiral transport is analyzed beyond the hydrodynamic approximation for the five (formerly) hydrodynamic modes, including a chiral magnetic wave.

Momentum and charge transport in non-relativistic holographic fluids from Hořava gravity

We study the linearized transport of transverse momentum and charge in a conjectured field theory dual to a black brane solution of Horava gravity with Lifshitz exponent $z=1$. As expected from general hydrodynamic reasoning, we find that both of these quantities are diffusive over distance and time scales larger than the inverse temperature. We compute the diffusion constants and conductivities of transverse momentum and charge, as well the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, and find that they differ from their relativistic counterparts. To derive these results, we propose how the holographic dictionary should be modified to deal with the multiple horizons and differing propagation speeds of bulk excitations in Horava gravity. When possible, as a check on our methods and results, we use the covariant Einstein-Aether formulation of Horava gravity, along with field redefinitions, to re-derive our results from a relativistic bulk theory.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Gravity and Information

Various contenders for a complete theory of quantum gravity are at odds with each other. This is in particular seen in the ways they relate to information and black holes, and how to effectively treat quantization of the background spacetime. Modern perspectives on black hole evaporation suggest that quantum gravity effects in the near-horizon region can perturb the local geometry. The approaches differ, however, in the time scale on which one can expect these effects to become important. This panel session presents three points of view on these problems, and considers the ultimate prospect of observational tests in the near future.

Quasinormal modes of magnetic and electric black branes versus far from equilibrium anisotropic fluids

Detailed knowledge about equilibration processes is of interest for various fields of physics, including heavy ion collision experiments and quantum quenched condensed matter systems. We study the approach to equilibrium at late times within two types of strongly coupled thermal systems in 3+1 dimensions: systems in the presence of (i) a non-zero charge density, or (ii) a magnetic field at vanishing charge density. Utilizing the gauge/gravity correspondence, we map the aforementioned problem to the computation of quasinormal frequencies around two particular classes of black branes within the Einstein-Maxwell theory. We compute (i) the tensor and vector quasinormal modes of Reissner-Nordström black branes and (ii) the scalar, as well as tensor quasinormal modes of magnetic black branes. Some of these quasinormal modes correspond to the late-time relaxation of the above systems after starting with initial pressure anisotropy. We provide benchmarks which need to be matched at late-times by all holographic thermalization codes with the appropriate symmetries.

Hydrodynamics in 1+1 dimensions from Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in AdS_3

In this presentation we review our work on Abelian Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in three-dimensional AdS black brane backgrounds, with both integer and non-integer Chern-Simons coupling. Such theories can be derived from several string theory constructions, and we found exact solutions in the low frequency, low momentum limit (omega, k << T, the hydrodynamic limit). Our results are translated into correlation functions of vector operators in the dual strongly coupled 1+1-dimensional quantum field theory with a chiral anomaly at non-zero temperature T, via the holographic correspondence. The applicability of the hydrodynamic limit is discussed, together with the comparison between an exact field theoretic computation and the found holographic correlation functions in the conformal case.

From Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in $AdS_3$ towards hydrodynamics in 1+1 dimensions

We study Abelian Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in three-dimensional $AdS$ black hole backgrounds for both integer and non-integer Chern-Simons coupling. Such theories can be derived from various string theory constructions, which we review in the present work. In particular we find exact solutions in the low frequency, low momentum limit, $ω, k \ll T$(hydrodynamic limit). Using the holographic principle, we translate our results into correlation functions of vector and scalar operators in the dual strongly coupled 1+1-dimensional quantum field theory with a chiral anomaly at non-zero temperature $T$. Starting from the conformal case we show applicability of the hydrodynamic limit and discuss extensions to the non-conformal case. Correlation functions in the conformal case are compared to an exact field theoretic computation.

Anomalous hydrodynamics kicks neutron stars

Observations show that, at the beginning of their existence, neutron stars are accelerated briskly to velocities of up to $1000$ km/s. We discuss possible mechanisms contributing to these kicks in a systematic effective-field-theory framework. Anomalies of the underlying microscopic theory result in chiral transport terms in the hydrodynamic description, and we identify these as explanation for the drastic acceleration. In the presence of vorticity or a magnetic field, the chiral transport effects cause neutrino emission along the respective axes. In typical scenarios, the transport effect due to the magnetic field turns out to be strong enough to explain the kicks. Mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies enter in a distinct way, and we also discuss their implications.
