Levitons in helical liquids with Rashba spin-orbit coupling probed by a superconducting contact

We consider transport properties of a single edge of a two-dimensional topological insulators, in presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, driven by two external time-dependent voltages and connected to a thin superconductor. We focus on the case of a train of Lorentzian-shaped pulses, which are known to generate coherent single-electron excitations in two-dimensional electron gas, and prove that they are minimal excitations for charge transport also in helical edge states, even in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. Importantly, these properties of Lorentzian-shaped pulses can be tested computing charge noise generated by the scattering of particles at the thin superconductor. This represents a novel setup where electron quantum optics experiments with helical states can be implemented, with the superconducting contact as an effective beamsplitter. By elaborating on this configuration, we also evaluate charge noise in a collisional Hong-Ou-Mandel configuration, showing that, due to the peculiar effects induced by Rashba interaction, a non-vanishing dip at zero delay appears.

Spectral properties of interacting helical channels driven by Lorentzian pulses

Precise shaping of coherent electron sources allows the controlled creation of wavepackets into a one dimensional (1D) quantum conductor. Periodic trains of Lorentzian pulses have been shown to induce minimal excitations without creating additional electron-hole pairs in a single non-interacting 1D electron channel. The presence of electron-electron (e-e) interactions dramatically affects the non-equilibrium dynamics of a 1D system. Here, we consider the intrinsic spectral properties of a helical liquid, with a pair of counterpropagating interacting channels, in the presence of time-dependent Lorentzian voltage pulses. We show that peculiar asymmetries in the behavior of the spectral function are induced by interactions, depending on the sign of the injected charges. Moreover, we discuss the robustness of the concept of minimal excitations in the presence of interactions, where the link with excess noise is no more straightforward. Finally, we propose a scanning tunneling microscope setup to spectroscopically access and probe the non-equilibrium behavior induced by the voltage drive and e-e interactions. This allows a diagnosis of fractional charges in a correlated quantum spin Hall liquid in the presence of time-dependent drives.

Levitons in superconducting point contacts

We investigate the transport properties of a superconducting quantum point contact in the presence of an arbitrary periodic drive. In particular, we calculate the dc current and noise in the tunnel limit, obtaining general expressions in terms of photoassisted probabilities. Interesting features can be observed when the frequency is comparable to the gap. Here, we show that quantized Lorentzian pulses minimize the excess noise, further strengthening the hierarchy among different periodic drives observed in the electron quantum optics domain. In this regime, the excess noise is directly connected to the overlap between electron and hole energy distributions driven out of equilibrium by the applied voltage. In the adiabatic limit, where the frequency of the drive is very small compared to the superconducting gap, we recover the conventional Shapiro-spikes physics in the supercurrent.

Optimal work-to-work conversion of a nonlinear quantum brownian duet

Performances of work-to-work conversion are studied for a dissipative nonlinear quantum system with two isochromatic phase-shifted drives. It is shown that for weak Ohmic damping simultaneous maximization of efficiency with finite power yield and low power fluctuations can be achieved. Optimal performances of these three quantities are accompanied by a shortfall of the trade-off bound recently introduced for classical thermal machines. This bound can be undercut down to zero for sufficiently low temperature and weak dissipation, where the non-Markovian quantum nature dominates. Analytic results are given for linear thermodynamics. These general features can persist in the nonlinear driving regime near to a maximum of the power yield and a minimum of the power fluctuations. This broadens the scope to a new operation field beyond linear response.

Hong-Ou-Mandel heat noise in the quantum Hall regime

We investigate heat current fluctuations induced by a periodic train of Lorentzian-shaped pulses, carrying an integer number of electronic charges, in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer implemented in a quantum Hall bar in the Laughlin sequence. We demonstrate that the noise in this collisional experiment cannot be reproduced in a setup with a single drive, in contrast to what is observed in the charge noise case. Nevertheless, the simultaneous collision of two identical levitons always leads to a total suppression even for the Hong-Ou-Mandel heat noise at all filling factors, despite the presence of emergent anyonic quasi-particle excitations in the fractional regime. Interestingly, the strong correlations characterizing the fractional phase are responsible for a remarkable oscillating pattern in the HOM heat noise, which is completely absent in the integer case. These oscillations can be related to the recently predicted crystallization of levitons in the fractional quantum Hall regime.

Z4 parafermions in one-dimensional fermionic lattices

Parafermions are emergent excitations which generalize Majorana fermions and are potentially relevant to topological quantum computation. Using the concept of Fock parafermions, we present a mapping between lattice $\mathbb{Z}_4$ parafermions and lattice spin-$1/2$ fermions which preserves the locality of operators with $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry. Based on this mapping, we construct an exactly solvable, local, and interacting one-dimensional fermionic Hamiltonian which hosts zero-energy modes obeying parafermionic algebra. We numerically show that this parafermionic phase remains stable in a wide range of parameters, and discuss its signatures in the fermionic spectral function.

Crystallization of Levitons in the fractional quantum Hall regime

Using a periodic train of Lorentzian voltage pulses, which generates soliton-like electronic excitations called Levitons, we investigate the charge density backscattered off a quantum point contact in the fractional quantum Hall regime. We find a regular pattern of peaks and valleys, reminiscent of analogous self-organization recently observed for optical solitons in non-linear environments. This crystallization phenomenon is confirmed by additional side dips in the Hong-Ou-Mandel noise, a feature that can be observed in nowadays electron quantum optics experiments.

Probing interactions via non-equilibrium momentum distribution and noise in integer quantum Hall systems at $ν=2$

We consider the excitation of single-electron wave packets by means of a time dependent voltage applied to the ballistic edge channels of the integer quantum Hall effect at filling factor $ν=2$. Due to electron-electron interactions, fractional excitations emerge along the edge. Their detailed structure is analyzed by evaluating the nonequilibrium momentum distributions associated with the different edge channels. We provide results for a generic time-dependent drive both in the stationary regime and for intermediate times, where the overlap between fractionalized wave packets carries relevant information on interaction strength. As a particular example we focus on a Lorentzian drive, which provides a clear signature of the minimal excitations known as Levitons. Here, we argue that inner-channel fractionalized excitations can be exploited to extract information about inter-channel interactions. We further confirm this idea by calculating the zero frequency noise due to the partitioning of these excitations at a quantum point contact and we propose a measurable quantity as a tool to directly probe electron-electron interactions and determine the so-called mixing angle of copropagating quantum Hall channels.

Universal scaling of quench-induced correlations in a one-dimensional channel at finite temperature

It has been shown that a quantum quench of interactions in a one-dimensional fermion system at zero temperature induces a universal power law $\propto t^{-2}$ in its long-time dynamics. In this paper we demonstrate that this behaviour is robust even in the presence of thermal effects. The system is initially prepared in a thermal state, then at a given time the bath is disconnected and the interaction strength is suddenly quenched. The corresponding effects on the long times dynamics of the non-equilibrium fermionic spectral function are considered. We show that the non-universal power laws, present at zero temperature, acquire an exponential decay due to thermal effects and are washed out at long times, while the universal behaviour $\propto t^{-2}$ is always present. To verify our findings, we argue that these features are also visible in transport properties at finite temperature. The long-time dynamics of the current injected from a biased probe exhibits the same universal power law relaxation, in sharp contrast with the non-quenched case which features a fast exponential decay of the current towards its steady value, and thus represents a fingerprint of quench-induced dynamics. Finally, we show that a proper tuning of the probe temperature, compared to that of the one-dimensional channel, can enhance the visibility of the universal power-law behaviour.

Photoassisted shot noise spectroscopy at fractional filling factor

We study the photoassisted shot noise generated by a periodic voltage in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Fluctuations of the current are due to the presence of a quantum point contact operating in the weak backscattering regime. We show how to reconstruct the photoassisted absorption and emission probabilities by varying independently the dc and ac contributions to the voltage drive. This is made possible by the peculiar power-law behavior of the tunneling rates in the chiral Luttinger liquid theory, which allow to approximate the typical infinite sums of the photoassisted transport formalism in a simple and particularly convenient way.

Charge and energy fractionalization mechanism in one-dimensional channels

We study the problem of injecting single electrons into interacting one-dimensional quantum systems, a fundamental building block for electron quantum optics. It is well known that such injection leads to charge and energy fractionalization. We elucidate this concept by calculating the nonequilibrium electron distribution function in the momentum and energy domains after the injection of an energy-resolved electron. Our results shed light on how fractionalization occurs via the creation of particle-hole pairs by the injected electron. In particular, we focus on systems with a pair of counterpropagating channels, and we fully analyze the properties of each chiral fractional excitation which is created by the injection. We suggest possible routes to access their energy and momentum distribution functions in topological quantum Hall or quantum spin-Hall edge states.

Quench-induced entanglement and relaxation dynamics in Luttinger liquids

We investigate the time evolution towards the asymptotic steady state of a one dimensional interacting system after a quantum quench. We show that at finite time the latter induces entanglement between right- and left- moving density excitations, encoded in their cross-correlators, which vanishes in the long-time limit. This behavior results in a universal time-decay in system spectral properties $ \propto t^{-2} $, in addition to non-universal power-law contributions typical of Luttinger liquids. Importantly, we argue that the presence of quench-induced entanglement clearly emerges in transport properties, such as charge and energy currents injected in the system from a biased probe, and determines their long-time dynamics. In particular, energy fractionalization phenomenon turns out to be a promising platform to observe the universal power-law decay $ \propto t^{-2} $ induced by entanglement and represents a novel way to study the corresponding relaxation mechanism.

Minimal excitation states for heat transport in driven quantum Hall systems

We investigate minimal excitation states for heat transport into a fractional quantum Hall system driven out of equilibrium by means of time-periodic voltage pulses. A quantum point contact allows for tunneling of fractional quasi-particles between opposite edge states, thus acting as a beam splitter in the framework of the electron quantum optics. Excitations are then studied through heat and mixed noise generated by the random partitioning at the barrier. It is shown that levitons, the single-particle excitations of a filled Fermi sea recently observed in experiments, represent the cleanest states for heat transport, since excess heat and mixed shot noise both vanish only when Lorentzian voltage pulses carrying integer electric charge are applied to the conductor. This happens in the integer quantum Hall regime and for Laughlin fractional states as well, with no influence of fractional physics on the conditions for clean energy pulses. In addition, we demonstrate the robustness of such excitations to the overlap of Lorentzian wavepackets. Even though mixed and heat noise have nonlinear dependence on the voltage bias, and despite the non-integer power-law behavior arising from the fractional quantum Hall physics, an arbitrary superposition of levitons always generates minimal excitation states.

Non-equilibrium effects on charge and energy partitioning after an interaction quench

Charge and energy fractionalization are among the most intriguing features of interacting onedimensional fermion systems. In this work we determine how these phenomena are modified in the presence of an interaction quench. Charge and energy are injected into the system suddenly after the quench, by means of tunneling processes with a non-interacting one-dimensional probe. Here, we demonstrate that the system settles to a steady state in which the charge fractionalization ratio is unaffected by the pre-quenched parameters. On the contrary, due to the post-quench nonequilibrium spectral function, the energy partitioning ratio is strongly modified, reaching values larger than one. This is a peculiar feature of the non-equilibrium dynamics of the quench process and it is in sharp contrast with the non-quenched case, where the ratio is bounded by one.

Time-resolved energy dynamics after single electron injection into an interacting helical liquid

The possibility to inject a single electron into ballistic conductors is at the basis of the new field of electron quantum optics. Here, we consider a single electron injection into the helical edge channels of a topological insulator. Their counterpropagating nature and the unavoidable presence of electron-electron interactions dramatically affect the time evolution of the single wavepacket. Modeling the injection process from a mesoscopic capacitor in presence of non-local tunneling, we focus on the time resolved charge and energy packet dynamics. Both quantities split up into counterpropagating contributions whose profiles are strongly affected by the interactions strength. In addition, stronger signatures are found for the injected energy, which is also affected by the finite width of the tunneling region. Indeed, the energy flow can be controlled by tuning the injection parameters and we demonstrate that, in presence of non-local tunneling, it is possible to achieve situation in which charge and energy flow in opposite directions.

Energy exchange in driven open quantum systems at strong coupling

The time-dependent energy transfer in a driven quantum system strongly coupled to a heat bath is studied within an influence functional approach. Exact formal expressions for the statistics of energy dissipation into the different channels are derived. The general method is applied to the driven dissipative two-state system. It is shown that the energy flows obey a balance relation, and that, for strong coupling, the interaction may constitute the major dissipative channel. Results in analytic form are presented for a particular value of strong Ohmic dissipation. The energy flows show interesting behaviors including driving-induced coherences and quantum stochastic resonances.

Spin-thermoelectric transport induced by interactions and spin-flip processes in two dimensional topological insulators

We consider thermoelectric transport properties of the edge states of a two dimensional topological insulator in a double quantum point contact geometry coupled to two thermally biased reservoirs. Both spin-preserving and spin-flipping tunneling processes between opposite edges are analyzed in the presence of electron-electron interactions. We demonstrate that the simultaneous presence of spin-flipping processes and interactions gives rise to a finite longitudinal spin current. Moreover, its sign and amplitude can be tuned by means of gate voltages with the possibility to generate a pure spin current, with a vanishing charge current.

Computation of transient dynamics of energy power for a dissipative two state system

We consider a two level system coupled to a thermal bath and we investigate the variation of energy transferred to the reservoir as a function of time. The physical quantity under investigation is the time-dependent quantum average power. We compare quantum master equation approaches with functional influence method. Differences and similarities between the methods are analyzed, showing deviations at low temperature between the functional integral approach and the predictions based on master equations.
