Edge physics in two-dimensional topological insulators

Topology in condensed matter physics manifests itself in the emergence of edge or surface states protected by underlying symmetries. We review two-dimensional topological insulators whose one-dimensional edge states are characterized by spin-momentum locking and protected by time-reversal symmetry. We focus in particular on their transport properties in the presence of electron interactions, which can allow the onset of different backscattering mechanisms, thus leading to deviations from the quantized conductance observed in the ballistic regime. The combined presence of helicity and electron interactions creates a new paradigm of the one-dimensional world called helical Luttinger liquid, whose theoretical properties and experimental observations are reviewed.

Time-resolved pure spin fractionalization and spin-charge separation in helical Luttinger liquid based devices

Helical Luttinger liquids, appearing at the edge of two-dimensional topological insulators, represent a new paradigm of one-dimensional systems, where peculiar quantum phenomena can be investigated. Motivated by recent experiments on charge fractionalization, we propose a setup based on helical Luttinger liquids that allows to time-resolve, in addition to charge fractionalization, also spin-charge separation and pure spin fractionalization. This is due to the combined presence of spin-momentum locking and interactions. We show that electric time-resolved measurements can reveal both charge and spin properties, avoiding the need of magnetic materials. Although challenging, the proposed setup could be achieved with nowadays technologies, promoting helical liquids as interesting playgrounds to explore the effects of interactions in one dimension.

Transient dynamics of spin-polarized injection in helical Luttinger liquids

We analyze the time evolution of spin-polarized electron wave packets injected into the edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator. In the presence of electron interactions, the system is described as a helical Luttinger liquid and injected electrons fractionalize. However, because of the presence of metallic detectors, no evidences of fractionalization are encoded in dc measurements, and in this regime the system do not show deviations from its non-interacting behavior. Nevertheless, we show that the helical Luttinger liquid nature emerges in the transient dynamics, where signatures of charge/spin fractionalization can be clearly identified.

Interference induced thermoelectric switching and heat rectification in quantum Hall junctions

Interference represents one of the most striking manifestation of quantum physics in low-dimensional systems. Despite evidences of quantum interference in charge transport have been known for a long time, only recently signatures of interference induced thermal properties have been reported, paving the way for the phase-coherent manipulation of heat in mesoscopic devices. In this work we show that anomalous thermoelectric properties and efficient heat rectification can be achieved by exploiting the phase-coherent edge states of quantum Hall systems. By considering a tunneling geometry with multiple quantum point contacts, we demonstrate that the interference paths effectively break the electron-hole symmetry, allowing for a thermoelectric charge current flowing either from hot to cold or viceversa, depending on the details of the tunnel junction. Correspondingly, an interference induced heat current is predicted, and we are able to explain these results in terms of an intuitive physical picture. Moreover, we show that heat rectification can be achieved by coupling two quantum Hall systems with different filling factors, and that this effect can be enhanced by exploiting the interference properties of the tunnel junction.

Current enhancement through a time dependent constriction in fractional topological insulators

We analyze the backscattering current induced by a time dependent constriction as a tool to probe fractional topological insulators. We demonstrate an enhancement of the total current for a fractional topological insulator induced by the dominant tunneling excitation, contrary to the decreasing present in the integer case for not too strong interactions. This feature allows to unambiguously identify fractional quasiparticles. Furthermore, the dominant tunneling processes, which may involve one or two quasiparticles depending on the interactions, can be clearly determined.

Magnetic AC control of the spin textures in a helical Luttinger liquid

We demonstrate the possibility to induce and control peculiar spin textures in a helical Luttinger liquid, by means of a time-dependent magnetic scatterer. The presence of a perturbation that breaks the time-reversal symmetry opens a gap in the spectrum, inducing single-particle backscattering and a peculiar spin response. We show that in the weak backscattering regime asymmetric spin textures emerge at the left and right side of the scatterer, whose spatial oscillations are controlled by the ratio between the magnetization frequency and the Fermi energy and by the electron interaction. This peculiar spin response marks a strong difference between helical and non-helical liquids, which are expected to produce symmetric spin textures even in the AC regime.

Parity dependent Josephson current through a helical Luttinger liquid

We consider a superconductor-two dimensional topological insulator- superconductor junction (S-2DTI-S) and study how the 2π- and 4π-periodic Josephson currents are affected by the electron-electron interaction. In the long-junction limit the supercurrent can by evaluated by modeling the system as a helical Luttinger liquid coupled to superconducting reservoirs. After having introduced bosonization in the presence of the parity constraint we turn to consider the limit of perfect and poor interfaces. For transparent interfaces, where perfect Andreev reflections occur at the boundaries, the Josephson current is marginally affected by the interaction. On the contrary, if strong magnetic scatterers are present in the weak link, the situation changes dramatically. Here Coulomb interaction plays a crucial role both in low and high temperature regimes. Furthermore, a phase-shift of Josephson current can be induced by changing the direction of the magnetization of the impurity.

Coulomb blockade microscopy of spin density oscillations and fractional charge in quantum spin Hall dots

We evaluate the spin density oscillations arising in quantum spin Hall quantum dots created via two localized magnetic barriers. The combined presence of magnetic barriers and spin-momentum locking, the hallmark of topological insulators, leads to peculiar phenomena: a half-integer charge is trapped in the dot for antiparallel magnetization of the barriers, and oscillations appear in the in-plane spin density, which are enhanced in the presence of electron interactions. Furthermore, we show that the number of these oscillations is determined by the number of particles inside the dot, so that the presence or the absence of the fractional charge can be deduced from the in-plane spin density. We show that when the dot is coupled with a magnetized tip, the spatial shift induced in the chemical potential allows to probe these peculiar features.

Spin current pumping in helical Luttinger liquids

We study the DC spin current induced into an unbiased quantum spin Hall system through a two-point contacts setup with time dependent electron tunneling amplitudes. By means of two external gates, it is possible to drive a current with spin-preserving and spin-flipping contributions showing peculiar oscillations as a function of pumping frequency, electron-electron interaction and temperature. From its interference patterns as a function of the Fabry-Perot and Aharonov-Bohm phases, it is possible to extract information about the helical nature of the edge states and the intensity of the electron-electron interaction.

Generating and controlling spin-polarized currents induced by a quantum spin Hall antidot

We study an electrically controlled quantum spin Hall antidot embedded in a two-dimensional topological insulating bar. Helical edge states around the antidot and along the edges of the bar are tunnel coupled. The close connection between spin and chirality, typical of helical systems, allows to generate a spin-polarized current flowing across the bar. This current is studied as a function of the external voltages, by varying the asymmetry between the barriers. For asymmetric setups, a switching behavior of the spin current is observed as the bias is increased, both in the absence and in the presence of electron interactions. This device allows to generate and control the spin-polarized current by simple electrical means.

Charge tunneling in fractional edge channels

We explain recent experimental observations on effective charge of edge states tunneling through a quantum point contact in the weak backscattering regime. We focus on the behavior of the excess noise and on the effective tunneling charge as a function of temperature and voltage. By introducing a minimal hierarchical model different filling factors, ν=p/(2p+1), in the Jain sequence are treated on equal footing, in presence also of non-universal interactions. The agreement found with the experiments for ν=2/3 and ν=2/5 reinforces the description of tunneling of bunching of quasiparticles at low energies and quantitatively defines the condition under which one expects to measure the fundamental quasiparticle charge. We propose high-order current cumulant measurement to cross-check the validity of the above scenario and to better clarify the peculiar temperature behavior of the effective charges measured in the experiments.

Asymmetric Franck-Condon factors in suspended carbon nanotube quantum dots

Electronic states and vibrons in carbon nanotube quantum dots have in general different location and size. As a consequence, the conventional Anderson-Holstein model, coupling vibrons to the dot total charge only, may no longer be appropriated in general. Here we explicitly address the role of the spatial fluctuations of the electronic density, yielding space-dependent Franck-Condon factors. We discuss the consequent marked effects on transport which are compatible with recent measurements. This picture can be relevant for tunneling experiments in generic nano-electromechanical systems.

Neutral modes edge state dynamics through quantum point contacts

Dynamics of neutral modes for fractional quantum Hall states is investigated for a quantum point contact geometry in the weak-backscattering regime. The effective field theory introduced by Fradkin-Lopez for edge states in the Jain sequence is generalized to the case of propagating neutral modes. The dominant tunnelling processes are identified also in the presence of non-universal phenomena induced by interactions. The crossover regime in the backscattering current between tunnelling of single-quasiparticles and of agglomerates of p-quasiparticles is analysed. We demonstrate that higher order cumulants of the backscattering current fluctuations are a unique resource to study quantitatively the competition between different carrier charges. We find that propagating neutral modes are a necessary ingredient in order to explain this crossover phenomena.

Entanglement and Fidelity for Holonomic Quantum Gates

We study entanglement and fidelity of a two-qubit system when a noisy holonomic, non-Abelian, transformation is applied to one of them. The source of noise we investigate is of two types: one due to a stochastic error representing an imprecise control of the fields driving the evolution; the other due to an interaction between the two near qubits. The peculiar level structure underlying the holonomic operator leads us to introduce the reduced logical entanglement which is the fraction of entanglement in the logical space. The comparison between entanglement and fidelity shows how they are differently affected by the noise and that, in general, the first is more robust than the latter. We find a range of physical parameters for which both fidelity and reduced logical entanglement are well preserved.

Multiple-quasiparticle agglomerates at ν=2/5

We investigate the dynamics of quasiparticle agglomerates in edge states of the Jain sequence for ν=2/5. Comparison of the Fradkin-Lopez model with the Wen one is presented within a field theoretical construction, focusing on similarities and differences. We demonstrate that both models predict the same universal role for the multiple-quasiparticle agglomerates that dominate on single quasiparticles at low energy. This result is induced by the presence of neutral modes with finite velocity and is essential to explain the anomalous behavior of tunneling conductance and noise through a point contact.

Relevance of multiple-quasiparticle tunneling between edge states at ν=p/(2np+1)

We present an explanation for the anomalous behavior in tunneling conductance and noise through a point contact between edge states in the Jain series $ν=p/(2np+1)$, for extremely weak-backscattering and low temperatures [Y.C. Chung, M. Heiblum, and V. Umansky, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf{91}}, 216804 (2003)]. We consider edge states with neutral modes propagating at finite velocity, and we show that the activation of their dynamics causes the unexpected change in the temperature power-law of the conductance. Even more importantly, we demonstrate that multiple-quasiparticles tunneling at low energies becomes the most relevant process. This result will be used to explain the experimental data on current noise where tunneling particles have a charge that can reach $p$ times the single quasiparticle charge. In this paper we analyze the conductance and the shot noise to substantiate quantitatively the proposed scenario.

Counting Statistics of Non-Markovian Quantum Stochastic Processes

We derive a general expression for the cumulant generating function (CGF) of non-Markovian quantum stochastic transport processes. The long-time limit of the CGF is determined by a single dominating pole of the resolvent of the memory kernel from which we extract the zero-frequency cumulants of the current using a recursive scheme. The finite-frequency noise is expressed not only in terms of the resolvent, but also initial system-environment correlations. As an illustrative example we consider electron transport through a dissipative double quantum dot for which we study the effects of dissipation on the zero-frequency cumulants of high orders and the finite-frequency noise.

Symanzik's Method Applied To The Fractional Quantum Hall Edge States

In this paper we consider an abelian Chern-Simons theory with plane boundary and we show, following Symankiz's quite general approach, how the known results for edge states in the Laughlin series can be derived in a systematic way by the separability condition. Moreover we show that the conserved boundary currents find a natural and explicit interpretation in terms of the continuity equation and the Tomonaga-Luttinger commutation relation for electronic density is recovered.
