Universal limit linear series and descent of moduli spaces

We introduce a formalism of descent of moduli spaces, and use it to produce limit linear series moduli spaces for families of curves in which the components of fibers may have monodromy. We then construct a universal stack of limit linear series over the stack of semistable curves of compact type, and produce new results on existence of real curves with few real linear series.

Twistor spaces for supersingular K3 surfaces

We develop a theory of twistor spaces for supersingular K3 surfaces, extending the analogy between supersingular K3 surfaces and complex analytic K3 surfaces. Our twistor spaces are obtained as relative moduli spaces of twisted sheaves on universal gerbes associated to the Brauer groups of supersingular K3 surfaces. In rank 0, this is a geometric incarnation of the Artin-Tate isomorphism. Twistor spaces give rise to curves in moduli spaces of twisted supersingular K3 surfaces, analogous to the analytic moduli space of marked K3 surfaces. We describe a theory of crystals for twisted supersingular K3 surfaces and a twisted period morphism from the moduli space of twisted supersingular K3 surfaces to this space of crystals. As applications of this theory, we give a new proof of the Ogus-Torelli theorem modeled on Verbitsky's proof in the complex analytic setting and a new proof of the result of Rudakov-Shafarevich that supersingular K3 surfaces have potentially good reduction. These proofs work in characteristic 3, filling in the last remaining gaps in the theory. As a further application, we show that each component of the supersingular locus in each moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces is unirational.

Period-index bounds for arithmetic threefolds

The standard period-index conjecture for the Brauer group of a field of transcendence degree 2 over a $p$-adic field predicts that the index divides the cube of the period. Using Gabber's theory of prime-to-$\ell$ alterations and the deformation theory of twisted sheaves, we prove that the index divides the fourth power of the period for every Brauer class whose period is prime to $6p$, giving the first uniform period-index bounds over such fields.

Splitting Brauer classes using the universal Albanese

We prove that every Brauer class over a field splits over a torsor under an abelian variety. If the index of the class is not congruent to 2 modulo 4, we show that the Albanese variety of any smooth curve of positive genus that splits the class also splits the class, and there exist many such curves splitting the class. We show that this can be false when the index is congruent to 2 modulo 4, but adding a single genus 1 factor to the Albanese suffices to split the class.

Moduli of sheaves: a modern primer

We give a modern introduction to the moduli of sheaves. After reviewing the classical theory, we give a catalogue of results from the last decade. We then consider a more "symmetric" formulation of the theory by working with gerbes from the start.

Blt Azumaya algebras and moduli of maximal orders

We study moduli spaces of maximal orders in a ramified division algebra over the function field of a smooth projective surface. As in the case of moduli of stable commutative surfaces, we show that there is a Kollár-type condition giving a better moduli problem with the same geometric points: the stack of blt Azumaya algebras. One virtue of this refined moduli problem is that it admits a compactification with a virtual fundamental class.

A stronger derived Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces

In an earlier paper the notion of a filtered derived equivalence was introduced, and it was shown that if two K3 surfaces admit such an equivalence then they are isomorphic. In this paper we study more refined aspects of filtered derived equivalences related to the action on the cohomological realizations of the Mukai motive. It is shown that if a filtered derived equivalence between K3 surfaces also preserves ample cones then one can find an isomorphism that induces the same map as the equivalence on the cohomological realizations.

Rational curves in the moduli of supersingular K3 surfaces

We show how to construct non-isotrivial families of supersingular K3 surfaces over rational curves using a relative form of the Artin-Tate isomorphism and twisted analogues of Bridgeland's results on moduli spaces of stable sheaves on elliptic surfaces. As a consequence, we show that every point of Artin invariant 10 in the Ogus space of marked supersingular K3 surfaces lies on infinitely many pairwise distinct rational curves canonically associated to elliptic structures on the underlying K3 surface.

Fourier-Mukai partners of K3 surfaces in positive characteristic

We study Fourier-Mukai equivalence of K3 surfaces in positive characteristic and show that the classical results over the complex numbers all generalize. The key result is a positive-characteristic version of the Torelli theorem that uses the derived category in place of the Hodge structure on singular cohomology; this is proven by algebraizing formal lifts of Fourier-Mukai kernels to characteristic zero. As a consequence, any Shioda-supersingular K3 surface is uniquely determined up to isomorphism by its derived category of coherent sheaves. We also study different realizations of Mukai's Hodge structure in algebraic cohomology theories (etale, crystalline, de Rham) and use these to prove: 1) the zeta function of a K3 surface is a derived invariant (discovered independently by Huybrechts); 2) the variational crystalline Hodge conjecture holds for correspondences arising from Fourier-Mukai kernels on products of two K3 surfaces.

Finiteness of K3 surfaces and the Tate conjecture

Given a finite field k of characteristic at least 5, we show that the Tate conjecture holds for K3 surfaces defined over the algebraic closure of k if and only if there are only finitely many K3 surfaces over each finite extension of k.

Colliot-Thélène's conjecture and finiteness of u-invariants

We show that Colliot-Thélène's conjecture on 0-cycles of degree 1 implies finiteness for the u-invariant of the function field of a curve over a totally imaginary number field and period-index bounds for the Brauer groups of arbitrary fields of transcendence degree 1 over the rational numbers.

Nagata compactification for algebraic spaces

We prove the Nagata compactification theorem for any separated map of finite type between quasi-compact and quasi-separated algebraic spaces, generalizing earlier results of Raoult. Along the way we also prove (and use) absolute noetherian approximation for such algebraic spaces, generalizing earlier results in the case of schemes.

Moduli of twisted orbifold sheaves

We study stacks of slope-semistable twisted sheaves on orbisurfaces with projective coarse spaces and prove that in certain cases they have many of the asymptotic properties enjoyed by the moduli of slope-semistable sheaves on smooth projective surfaces.

Boundedness of families of canonically polarized manifolds: A higher dimensional analogue of Shafarevich's conjecture

We show that the number of deformation types of canonically polarized manifolds over an arbitrary variety with proper singular locus is finite, and that this number is uniformly bounded in any finite type family of base varieties. As a corollary we show that a direct generalization of the geometric version of Shafarevich's original conjecture holds for infinitesimally rigid families of canonically polarized varieties.

Period and index in the Brauer group of an arithmetic surface (with an appendix by Daniel Krashen)

In this paper we introduce two new ways to split ramification of Brauer classes on surfaces using stacks. Each splitting method gives rise to a new moduli space of twisted stacky vector bundles. By studying the structure of these spaces we prove new results on the standard period-index conjecture. The first yields new bounds on the period-index relation for classes on curves over higher local fields, while the second can be used to relate the Hasse principle for forms of moduli spaces of stable vector bundles on pointed curves over global fields to the period-index problem for Brauer groups of arithmetic surfaces. We include an appendix by Daniel Krashen showing that the local period-index bounds are sharp.

Compactified moduli of projective bundles

We present a method for compactifying stacks of $\PGL_n$-torsors (Azumaya algebras) on algebraic spaces. In particular, when the ambient space is a smooth projective surface we use our methods to show that various moduli spaces are irreducible and carry natural virtual fundamental classes. We also prove a version of the Skolem-Noether theorem for certain algebra objects in the derived category, which allows us to give an explicit description of the boundary points in our compactified moduli problem.
