Arithmetic aspects of moduli of sheaves on curves

We describe recent work on the arithmetic properties of moduli spaces of stable vector bundles and stable parabolic bundles on a curve over a global field. In particular, we describe a connection between the period-index problem for Brauer classes over the function field of the curve and the Hasse principle for rational points on etale forms of such moduli spaces, refining classical results of Artin and Tate. Submitted to proceedings of a Clay workshop on vector bundles on curves in honor of Newstead.

Functorial reconstruction theorems for stacks

We study the circumstances under which one can reconstruct a stack from its associated functor of isomorphism classes. This is possible surprisingly often: we show that many of the standard examples of moduli stacks are determined by their functors. Our methods seem to exhibit new anabelian-type phenomena, in the form of structures in the category of schemes that encode automorphism data in groupoids.

Index reduction for Brauer classes via stable sheaves (with an appendix by Bhargav Bhatt)

We use twisted sheaves to study the problem of index reduction for Brauer classes. In general terms, this problem may be phrased as follows: given a field $k$, a $k$-variety $X$, and a class $α\in \Br(k)$, compute the index of the class $α_{k(X)} \in \Br(X)$ obtained from $α$ by extension of scalars to $k(X)$. We give a general method for computing index reduction which refines classical results of Schofield and van den Bergh. When $X$ is a curve of genus 1, we use Atiyah's theorem on the structure of stable vector bundles with integral slope to show that our formula simplifies dramatically, giving a complete solution to the index reduction problem in this case. Using the twisted Fourier-Mukai transform, we show that a similarly simple formula describes homogeneous index reduction on torsors under higher-dimensional abelian varieties.

Generators and relations for the etale fundamental group

If $C$ is a smooth curve over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$, then the structure of the maximal prime to $p$ quotient of the étale fundamental group is known by analytic methods. In this paper, we discuss the properties of the fundamental group that can be deduced by purely algebraic techniques. We describe a general reduction from an arbitrary curve to the projective line minus three points, and show what can be proven unconditionally about the maximal pro-nilpotent and pro-solvable quotients of the prime-to-$p$ fundamental group. Included is an appendix which treats the tame fundamental group from a stack-theoretic perspective.

Bridgeland-Stable Moduli Spaces for K-Trivial Surfaces

We give a natural family of Bridgeland stability conditions on the derived category of a smooth projective complex surface S and describe ``wall-crossing behavior'' for objects with the same invariants as $\cO_C(H)$ when H generates Pic(S) and $C \in |H|$. If, in addition, S is a K3 or Abelian surface, we use this description to construct a sequence of fine moduli spaces of Bridgeland-stable objects via Mukai flops and generalized elementary modifications of the universal coherent sheaf. We also discover a natural generalization of Thaddeus' stable pairs for curves embedded in the moduli spaces.

Twisted sheaves and the period-index problem

We use twisted sheaves and their moduli spaces to study the Brauer group of a scheme. In particular, we (1) show how twisted methods can be efficiently used to re-prove the basic facts about the Brauer group and cohomological Brauer group (including Gabber's theorem that they coincide for a separated union of two affine schemes), (2) give a new proof of de Jong's period-index theorem for surfaces over algebraically closed fields, and (3) prove an analogous result for surfaces over finite fields. We also include a reduction of all period-index problems for Brauer groups of function fields over algebraically closed fields to characteristic 0, which (among other things) extends de Jong's result to include classes of period divisible by the characteristic of the base field. Finally, we use the theory developed here to give counterexamples to a standard type of local-to-global conjecture for geometrically rational varieties over the function field of the projective plane.

Remarks on the stack of coherent algebras

We consider the stack of coherent algebras with proper support, a moduli problem generalizing Alexeev and Knutson's stack of branchvarieties to the case of an Artin stack. The main results are proofs of the existence of Quot and Hom spaces in greater generality than is currently known and several applications to Alexeev and Knutson's original construction: a proof that the stack of branchvarieties is always algebraic, that limits of one-dimensional families always exist, and that the connected components of the stack of branchvarieties are proper over the base under certain hypotheses on the ambient stack.

Moduli of twisted sheaves

We study moduli of semistable twisted sheaves on smooth proper morphisms of algebraic spaces. In the case of a relative curve or surface, we prove results on the structure of these spaces. For curves, they are essentially isomorphic to spaces of semistable vector bundles. In the case of surfaces, we show (under a mild hypothesis on the twisting class) that the spaces are asympotically geometrically irreducible, normal, generically smooth, and l.c.i. over the base. We also develop general tools necessary for these results: the theory of associated points and purity of sheaves on Artin stacks, twisted Bogomolov inequalities, semistability and boundedness results, and basic results on twisted Quot-schemes on a surface.

Moduli of complexes on a proper morphism

Given a proper morphism X -> S, we show that a large class of objects in the derived category of X naturally form an Artin stack locally of finite presentation over S. This class includes S-flat coherent sheaves and, more generally, contains the collection of all S-flat objects which can appear in the heart of a reasonable sheaf of t-structures on X. In this sense, this is the Mother of all Moduli Spaces (of sheaves). The proof proceeds by studying the finite presentation properties, deformation theory, and Grothendieck existence theorem for objects in the derived category, and then applying Artin's representability theorem.
