Chiral magnetic effect in the presence of an external axial-vector field

We study the excitation of the electric current of chiral fermions along the external magnetic field, known as the chiral magnetic effect, in the presence of the background axial-vector field. The calculation of the current is based on the exact solution of the Dirac equation for these fermions accounting for the external fields. First, this solution was obtained for massive particles and, then, we consider the chiral limit, which is used in the anomalous current computation. We obtain that, in this situation, the anomalous current does not contain the direct contribution of the axial-vector field. This result is compared with findings of other authors.

Strong magnetic fields in compact stars as a macroscopic parity violation phenomenon

We review the results in our recent works on the generation of strong magnetic fields in compact stars driven by the parity violating electroweak interactions between background fermions. The cases of a neutron star, a hybrid star, and a quark star are considered. We formulate the system of kinetic equations for the description of the spectra of the magnetic energy and the magnetic helicity, as well as for the chiral imbalances. Turbulence effects, which can be important for the evolution of small-scale magnetic field, are also taken into account. We find the numerical solution of these equations in case of large- and small-scale magnetic fields in quark matter. The applications of the obtained results for the generation of large-scale magnetic fields in magnetars and for the explanation of magnetar bursts are discussed.

Magnetic fields in turbulent quark matter and magnetar bursts

We analyze the magnetic field evolution in dense quark matter with unbroken chiral symmetry, which can be found inside quark and hybrid stars. The magnetic field evolves owing to the chiral magnetic effect in the presence of the electroweak interaction between quarks. In our study, we also take into account the magnetohydrodynamic turbulence effects in dense quark matter. We derive the kinetic equations for the spectra of the magnetic helicity density and the magnetic energy density as well as for the chiral imbalances. On the basis of the numerical solution of these equations, we find that turbulence effects are important for the behavior of small scale magnetic fields. It is revealed that, under certain initial conditions, these magnetic fields behave similarly to the electromagnetic flashes of some magnetars. We suggest that fluctuations of magnetic fields, described in frames of our model, which are created in the central regions of a magnetized compact star, can initiate magnetar bursts.

Generation of the relic neutrino asymmetry in a hot plasma of the early Universe

The neutrino asymmetry in the early universe plasma, $n_ν- n_{\bar ν}$, is calculated both before and after the electroweak phase transition (EWPT). In the Standard Model before EWPT, the leptogenesis is well known to be driven by the abelian anomaly in a massless hypercharge field. The generation of the neutrino asymmetry in the Higgs phase after EWPT, in its turn, has not been considered previously because of the absence of any quantum anomaly in an external electromagnetic field for such electroneutral particles as neutrino, unlike the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly for charged left and right polarized massless electrons in the same electromagnetic field. Using the neutrino Boltzmann equation, modified by the Berry curvature term in the momentum space, we establish the violation of the macroscopic neutrino current in plasma after EWPT and exactly reproduce the nonconservation of the lepton current in the symmetric phase before EWPT arising in quantum field theory due to the nonzero lepton hypercharge and corresponding triangle anomaly in an external hypercharge field. In the last case, the non-conservation of the lepton current is derived through the kinetic approach without a computation of corresponding Feynman diagrams. Then the new kinetic equation is applied for the calculation of the neutrino asymmetry accounting for the Berry curvature and the electroweak interaction with background fermions in the Higgs phase. Such an interaction generates a neutrino asymmetry through the electroweak coupling of neutrino currents with electromagnetic fields in plasma, which is $\sim G_\mathrm{F}^2$. It turns out that this effect is especially efficient for maximally helical magnetic fields.

New magnetic field instability and magnetar bursts

We consider the system of massive electrons, possessing nonzero anomalous magnetic moments, which electroweakly interact with background neutrons under the influence of an external magnetic field. The Dirac equation for such electrons is exactly solved. Basing on the obtained solution, we find that a nonzero electric current of these electrons can flow along the magnetic field. Accounting for the new current in the Maxwell equations, we demonstrate that a magnetic field in this system appears to be unstable. Then we consider a particular case of a degenerate electron gas, which may well exist in a neutron star, and show that a seed magnetic field can be amplified by more than one order of magnitude. Finally we discuss the application of our results for the explanation of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by magnetars.

Magnetic field instability driven by anomalous magnetic moments of massive fermions and electroweak interaction with background matter

It is shown that the electric current of massive fermions along the external magnetic field can be excited in the case when particles possess anomalous magnetic moments and electroweakly interact with background matter. This current is calculated on the basis of the exact solution of the Dirac equation in the external fields. It is shown that the magnetic field becomes unstable if this current is taken into account in the Maxwell equations. Considering a particular case of a degenerate electron gas, which can be found in a neutron star, it is revealed that the seed magnetic field can be significantly enhanced. The application of the results to astrophysics is also discussed.

Magnetic field generation in dense gas of massive electrons with anomalous magnetic moments electroweakly interacting with background matter

We describe the generation of the electric current flowing along the external magnetic field in the system of massive charged fermions, possessing anomalous magnetic moments and electroweakly interacting with background matter. This current is shown to result in the instability of the magnetic field leading to its growth. Some astrophysical applications are discussed.

Long-lived plasma formations in the atmosphere as an alternative energy source

A model of a stable plasma formation, based on radial quantum oscillations of charged particles, is discussed. The given plasmoid is described with the help of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. A new phenomenon of the effective attraction between oscillating charged particles is considered within the framework of the proposed model. The possible existence of a composite plasma structure is also discussed. Hypothesis about using the obtained results to describe natural long-lived plasma formations, which can serve as alternative energy sources, is put forward.

Cosmological magnetic fields in turbulent matter

We study the evolution of magnetic fields in turbulent hot plasma of the early Universe accounting for the chiral magnetic effect. The magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is modeled by replacing the matter velocity in the advection term in the Faraday equation with the Lorentz force. The system of the kinetic equations for the spectra of the densities of the magnetic helicity and the magnetic energy, as well as for the chiral imbalance, is derived. The amplification of the magnetic field is shown to result from the presence of the chiral magnetic effect solely. The system of the kinetic equations is solved numerically in primordial plasma after the electroweak phase transition. The influence of the matter turbulence on the magnetic field evolution is examined for different seed magnetic fields.

Neutrino spin oscillations in curved space-time under the influence of external fields

We study neutrino spin oscillations in background matter under the influence of strong electromagnetic and gravitational fields. The neutrino spin evolution is treated quasiclassically. We derive the effective Hamiltonian governing spin oscillations of a neutrino moving in the vicinity of a black hole and interacting with a relativistic magnetized accretion disk around a black hole. Applications for the studies of spin oscillations of astrophysical neutrinos are considered.

Chiral magnetic effect in the presence of electroweak interactions as a quasiclassical phenomenon

We elaborate the quasiclassical approach to obtain the modified chiral magnetic effect in the case when massless charged fermions interact with electromagnetic fields and the background matter by the electroweak forces. The derivation of the anomalous current along the external magnetic field involves the study of the energy density evolution of chiral particles in parallel electric and magnetic fields. We consider both the particle acceleration by the external electric field and the contribution of the Adler anomaly. The condition of the validity of this method for the derivation of the chiral magnetic effect is formulated. We obtain the expression for the electric current along the external magnetic field, which appears to coincide with our previous results based on the purely quantum approach. Our results are compared with findings of other authors.

Nonconservation of lepton current and asymmetry of relic neutrinos

The neutrino asymmetry in the early universe plasma, $n_ν- n_{\bar ν}$, is calculated both before and after the electroweak phase transition (EWPT). The leptogenesis before EWPT within the standard model is well known to be driven by the abelian anomaly in a massless hypercharge field. The generation of the neutrino asymmetry in the Higgs phase after EWPT, in its turn, has not been considered previously because of the absence of any quantum anomaly in an external electromagnetic field for such electroneutral particles as neutrino, unlike the Adler anomaly for charged left and right polarized massless electrons in the same electromagnetic field. Using the neutrino Boltzmann equation, modified by the Berry curvature term in the momentum space, we establish the violation of the macroscopic neutrino current in plasma after EWPT and exactly reproduce the nonconservation of the lepton current in the symmetric phase before EWPT arising in quantum field theory due to the non-zero lepton hypercharge and corresponding triangle anomaly in an external hypercharge field. In the last case the violation of the lepton current is derived through the kinetic approach without the computation of the corresponding Feynman diagrams. Then the new kinetic equation is applied for the calculation of the neutrino asymmetry accounting for the the Berry curvature and the electroweak interaction with background fermions in the Higgs phase, including the stage after the neutrino decoupling at the absence of neutrino collisions in plasma. This asymmetry is found to be rather small to be observed. Thus, a difference of the relic neutrino and antineutrino densities, if exists, should be acquired mainly in the symmetric phase before EWPT.

Relaxation of the chiral chemical potential in the dense matter of a neutron star

A model of the generation of a magnetic field in a neutron star is developed, based on an instability of the magnetic field caused by the electroweak interaction between electrons and nucleons in nuclear matter. The rate of change of the helicity of the electrons as they scatter on protons in the dense matter of a neutron star is calculated with the help of methods of quantum field theory. The influence of the electroweak interaction between electrons and background nucleons on the process of change of the helicity is examined. A kinetic equation is derived for the evolution of the chiral chemical potential. The results obtained are used to describe the evolution of the magnetic field in magnetars.

Influence of the turbulent motion on the chiral magnetic effect in the early Universe

We study the magnetohydrodynamics of relativistic plasmas accounting for the chiral magnetic effect (CME). To take into account the evolution of the plasma velocity, obeying the Navier-Stokes equation, we approximate it by the Lorentz force accompanied by the phenomenological drag time parameter. On the basis of this ansatz, we obtain the contributions of both the turbulence effects, resulting from the dynamo term, and the magnetic field instability, caused by the CME, to the evolution of the magnetic field governed by the modified Faraday equation. In this way, we explore the evolution of the magnetic field energy and the magnetic helicity density spectra in the early Universe plasma. We find that the right-left electron asymmetry is enhanced by the turbulent plasma motion in a strong seed magnetic field compared to the pure the CME case studied earlier for the hot Universe plasma in the same broken phase.

Relaxation of the chiral imbalance and the generation of magnetic fields in magnetars

The model for the generation of magnetic fields in a neutron star, based on the magnetic field instability caused by the electroweak interaction between electrons and nucleons, is developed. Using the methods of the quantum field theory, the helicity flip rate of electrons in their scattering off protons in dense matter of a neutron star is calculated. The influence of the electroweak interaction between electrons and background nucleons on the process of the helicity flip is studied. The kinetic equation for the evolution of the chital imbalance is derived. The obtained results are applied for the description of the magnetic fields evolution in magnetars.

Generation of strong magnetic fields in hybrid and quark stars driven by the electroweak interaction of quarks

We study the generation of strong large scale magnetic fields in compact stars containing degenerate quark matter with unbroken chiral symmetry. The magnetic field growth is owing to the magnetic field instability driven by the electroweak interaction of quarks. In this system we predict the enhancement of the seed magnetic field $10^{12}\,\text{G}$ to the strengths $(10^{14}-10^{15})\,\text{G}$. In our analysis we use the typical parameters of the quark matter in the core of a hybrid star or in a quark star. We also apply of the obtained results to model the generation of magnetic fields in magnetars.

Role of particle masses in the magnetic field generation driven by the parity violating interaction

Recently the new model for the generation of strong large scale magnetic fields in neutron stars, driven by the parity violating interaction, was proposed. In this model, the magnetic field instability results from the modification of the chiral magnetic effect in presence of the electroweak interaction between ultrarelativistic electrons and nucleons. In the present work we study how a nonzero mass of charged particles, which are degenerate relativistic electrons and nonrelativistic protons, influences the generation of the magnetic field in frames of this approach. For this purpose we calculate the induced electric current of these charged particles, electroweakly interacting with background neutrons and an external magnetic field, exactly accounting for the particle mass. This current is calculated by two methods: using the exact solution of the Dirac equation for a charged particle in external fields and computing the polarization operator of a photon in matter composed of background neutrons. We show that the induced current is vanishing in both approaches leading to the zero contribution of massive particles to the generated magnetic field. We discuss the implication of our results for the problem of the magnetic field generation in compact stars.
