Evolution of axions in the presence of primordial magnetic fields

We study the evolution of axions interacting with primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) starting just from the QCD phase transition in the expanding universe. This interaction is owing to the Primakoff effect. Adopting the zero mode approximation for axions, we derive the system of equations for axions and magnetic fields, where the expansion of the universe and the spectra of magnetic fields are accounted for exactly. We find that the contribution of the Primakoff effect to the dynamics of axions and magnetic fields is rather weak. It confirms some previous estimates leading to analogous conclusions, when accounting here for the Hubble expansion both for an uniform axion field and non-uniform PMFs using Fourier spectra for their energy and helicity densities. We solve the corresponding system of the evolution equations and find that the axion zero mode, when evolving during radiation era, has its amplitude at the level sufficient for that axion to be a good candidate for the cold dark matter.

Spin oscillations of neutrinos scattered off a rotating black hole

Spin oscillations of neutrinos, gravitationally scattered off a black hole (BH), are studied. The cases of nonrotating and rotating BHs are analyzed. We derive the analytic expressions for the transition and survival probabilities of spin oscillations when neutrinos interact with these gravitational backgrounds. The obtained transition probabilities depend on the impact parameter, as well as the neutrino energy and the particle mass. We find that there is a possibility of spin oscillations of ultrarelativistic neutrinos scattering off a rotating BH. Then, considering the neutrino scattering off BH surrounded by background matter, we derive the effective Schrodinger equation for spin oscillations. The numerical solution of this equation is obtained in the case of a supermassive BH with a realistic accretion disk. Spin effects turn out to be negligible in the neutrino scattering in the Schwarzschild metric. In the Kerr metric, we find that the observed neutrino fluxes can be reduced almost 10% because of spin oscillations when ultrarelativistic neutrinos experience gravitational scattering. The neutrino interaction with an accretion disk results in the additional modification of the intensities of outgoing neutrino fluxes. We consider the applications of the obtained results for the neutrino astronomy.

Magnetic helicity in plasma of chiral fermions electroweakly interacting with inhomogeneous matter

We study chiral fermions electroweakly interacting with a background matter having the nonuniform density and the velocity arbitrarily depending on coordinates. The dynamics of this system is described approximately by finding the Berry phase. The effective action and the kinetic equations for right and left particles are derived. In the case of a rotating matter, we obtain the correction to the anomalous electric current and to the Adler anomaly. Then we study some astrophysical applications. Assuming that the chiral imbalance in a rotating neutron star vanishes, we obtain the rate of the magnetic helicity change owing to the interaction of chiral electrons with background neutrons. The characteristic time of the helicity change turns out to coincide with the period of the magnetic cycle of some pulsars.

Generation of strong magnetic fields in old neutron stars accounting for continuous chiral magnetic effect

We suggest a new mean field dynamo model in anomalous MagnetoHydroDynamics (AMHD) accounting for the mean spin (polarization) of the magnetized chiral (ultrarelativistic) plasma of a neutron star (NS). For simplicity we consider a non-superfluid NS with its rigid rotation neglecting also any matter turbulence (convection) within a star. On this way, we recover the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) as a possible source for the amplification of a seed, sufficiently strong magnetic field, $B\sim 10^{13}\,\text{G}$, up to values $B\gtrsim 10^{18}\,\text{G}$ in old NS's, having ages $t\gtrsim 10^6\,\text{yr}$. The important issue in AMHD model suggested is the continuous evolution of the chiral imbalance providing the CME for these ages, $\partial_tμ_5 (t)\neq 0$, in spite of the fast spin-flip in Coulomb collisions in the dense NS plasma that leads to vanishing $μ_5\to 0$ at an earlier epoch in the corresponding protoneutron star. In contrast to the conventional mean-field dynamos, the dynamo drivers in the model are produced due to magnetic field generated at the previous stages of stellar evolution. It makes our model basically nonlinear.

Generation of strong magnetic fields in a nascent neutron star accounting for the chiral magnetic effect

We propose the mean field dynamo model for the generation of strongest magnetic fields, $B\sim 10^{15}\,{\rm G}$, in a neutron star (NS) accounting for the chiral magnetic effect (CME) driven by the shock in a supernova (SN) progenitor of that NS. The temperature jump at a narrow shock front, where an initial magnetic field existing in inflowing matter rises sharply, is the source of the CME that prevails significantly the erasure of the CME due to the spin-flip through Coulomb collisions in plasma. The growth of the magnetic field just behind the shock given by the instability term $\nabla\times (α{\bf B})$ in induction equation, stops after a successful SN explosion that throws out the mantle of a protoneutron star. As a result, such an explosion interrupts the transfer of strongly magnetized plasma from the shock onto NS surface and leads to the saturation of the magnetic field. Assuming the rigid protostar rotation, we employ the mean field dynamo, which is similar to the $α^2$-dynamo known in the standard magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The novelty of our model is that $α^2$-dynamo is based on concepts of particle physics, applied in MHD, rather than by a mirror asymmetry of convective vortices in the rotating convection.

Reconnection of magnetic fields in neutron stars driven by the electron mass term in the triangle anomaly

The Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly for massive particles is studied in an external magnetic field. The contributions of the mean spin and the pseudoscalar are accounted for in the quasiclassical approximation. The equation for the evolution of the magnetic helicity with the new quantum corrections is derived. We show that the quantum contribution to the helicity evolution can overcome the classical one in the dense degenerate matter which can be present in the core of a neutron star. The application of the obtained results for the interpretation of magnetar bursts are discussed.

Relativistic quantum mechanics description of neutrino spin-flavor oscillations in various external fields

We review the application of the relativistic quantum mechanics method for the description of neutrino oscillations for the studies of spin-flavor oscillations in background matter under the influence of a plane electromagnetic wave. Basing on the new exact solution of the Dirac-Pauli equation for a massive neutrino in the given external fields, we derive the transition probabilities for spin and spin-flavor oscillations. The obtained expressions are analyzed for different types of the neutrino magnetic moments. Our results are compared with findings of other authors.

Spin effects in neutrino gravitational scattering

We study spin oscillations of neutrinos gravitationally scattered off a nonrotating black hole (BH). We derive the transition and survival probabilities of spin oscillations in quadratures when neutrinos interacts with BH only. The dependence of the probabilities on the impact parameter is analyzed. Then, we obtain the effective Schrödinger equation for neutrino spin oscillations in neutrino scattering off BH surrounded by background matter. This equation is solved numerically in the case of a supermassive BH with a realistic accretion disk. We find that the observed neutrino fluxes can be reduced almost 20% because of spin oscillations when neutrinos experience gravitational scattering. The neutrino interaction with an accretion disk results in the additional asymmetry in the intensities of outgoing fluxes depending on the neutrino trajectory.

Neutrino flavor oscillations in stochastic gravitational waves

We study neutrino flavor oscillations in a plane gravitational wave (GW) with circular polarization. For this purpose we use the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation to get the contribution of GW to the effective Hamiltonian for the neutrino mass eigenstates. Then, considering stochastic GWs, we derive the equation for the density matrix for flavor neutrinos and analytically solve it in the two flavors approximation. The equation for the density matrix for the three neutrino flavors is also derived and solved numerically. In both cases of two and three neutrino flavors, we predict the ratios of fluxes of different flavors at a detector for cosmic neutrinos with relatively low energies owing to the interaction with such a GW background. The obtained results are compared with the recent observation of the flavor content of the astrophysical neutrino fluxes.

Neutrino oscillations in gravitational waves

We study spin and flavor oscillations of neutrinos under the influence of gravitational waves (GWs). We rederive the quasiclassical equation for the evolution of the neutrino spin in various external fields in curved spacetime starting from the Dirac equation for a massive neutrino. Then, we consider neutrino spin oscillations in nonmoving and unpolarized matter, a transverse magnetic field, and a plane GW. We show that a parametric resonance can take place in this system. We also study neutrino flavor oscillations in GWs. The equation for the density matrix of flavor neutrinos is solved when we discuss the neutrino interaction with stochastic GWs emitted by coalescing supermassive black holes. We find the fluxes of cosmic neutrinos, undergoing flavor oscillations in such a gravitational background, which can be potentially measured by a terrestrial detector. Some astrophysical applications of our results are considered.

Permanent mean spin source of the chiral magnetic effect in neutron stars

We suggest the generalization of the Anomalous Magneto-Hydro-Dynamics (AMHD) in the chiral plasma of a neutron star (NS) accounting for the mean spin in the ultrarelativistic degenerate electron gas within the magnetized NS core as a continuing source of the chiral magnetic effect. Using the mean field dynamo model generalized in AMHD, one can obtain the growth of a seed magnetic field up to $10^{18}\,\text{G}$ for an old non-superfluid NS at its neutrino cooling era $t < 10^6\,\text{yr}$, while neglecting any matter turbulence within its core and assuming the rigid NS rotation. The application of the suggested approach to the evolution of magnetic fields observed in magnetars, $B\sim 10^{15}\,\text{G}$, should be self-consistent with all approximations used in the suggested laminar dynamo, at least, up to the jumps of growing fields.

Neutrino spin oscillations in external fields in curved spacetime

We study spin oscillations of massive Dirac neutrinos in background matter, electromagnetic and gravitational fields. First, using the Dirac equation for a neutrino interacting with the external fields in curved spacetime, we rederive the quasiclassical equation for the neutrino spin evolution, which was proposed previously basing on principles of the general covariance. Then, we apply this result for the description of neutrino spin oscillations in nonmoving and unpolarized matter under the influence of a constant transverse magnetic field and a gravitational wave. We derive the effective Schrödinger equation for neutrino oscillations in these external fields and solve it numerically. Choosing realistic parameters of external fields, we show that the parametric resonance can take place in spin oscillations of low energy neutrinos. Some astrophysical applications are briefly discussed.

Spin-flavor oscillations of Dirac neutrinos in matter under the influence of a plane electromagnetic wave

We study oscillations of Dirac neutrinos in background matter and a plane electromagnetic wave. First, we find the new exact solution of the Dirac-Pauli equation for a massive neutrino with the anomalous magnetic moment electroweakly interacting with matter under the influence of a plane electromagnetic wave with the circular polarization. We use this result to describe neutrino spin oscillations in the external fields in question. Then we consider several neutrino flavors and study neutrino spin-flavor oscillations in this system. For this purpose we formulate the initial condition problem and solve it accounting for the considered external fields. We derive the analytical expressions for the transition probabilities of spin-flavor oscillations for different types of neutrino magnetic moments. These analytical expressions are compared with the numerical solutions of the effective Schrödinger equation and with the findings of other authors. In particular, we reveal that a resonance in neutrino spin-flavor oscillations in the considered external fields cannot happen contrary to the previous claims. Finally, we briefly discuss some possible astrophysical applications.

Numerical methods for the construction of linear waves structures on discrete orthogonal grids

We study the possibility for the implementation of linear wave structures on discrete grids with various dimensions. The systems of the first order differential equations for the set of virtual functions, describing the wave propagation, are derived for different spectral zones. We are particularly interested in the spectral regions which are localized near the lowest and the maximal frequencies, as well as in the vicinity of a central frequency. The cases of discrete orthogonal grids with dimensions from 1 to 4 are analyzed. The possibility of the propagation of waves in the considered situations is substantiated by numerical simulations.

Equilibrium electric current of massive electrons with anomalous magnetic moments induced by a magnetic field and the electroweak interaction with matter

We study the possibility of the existence of the electric current, formed by massive electrons and positrons, flowing along an external magnetic field. The charged fermions are supposed to have nonzero anomalous magnetic moments and electroweakly interact with background matter. The expression for the current is obtained on the basis of the exact solution of the Dirac equation in the corresponding external fields. We demonstrate that, in the state of equilibrium, such a current is vanishing for any characteristics of the electron-positron plasma as well as the external fields. Our results are compared with the recent findings of other authors.

Spin-flavor oscillations of Dirac neutrinos in a plane electromagnetic wave

We study spin and spin-flavor oscillations of Dirac neutrinos in a plane electromagnetic wave with circular polarization. The evolution of massive neutrinos with nonzero magnetic moments in the field of an electromagnetic wave is based on the exact solution of the Dirac-Pauli equation. We formulate the initial condition problem to describe spin-flavor oscillations in an electromagnetic wave. The transition probabilities for spin and spin-flavor oscillations are obtained. In case of spin-flavor oscillations, we analyze the transition and survival probabilities for different neutrino magnetic moments and various channels of neutrino oscillations. As an application of the obtained results, we study the possibility of existence of $ν_{e\mathrm{L}}\toν_{μ\mathrm{R}}$ oscillations in an electromagnetic wave emitted by a highly magnetized neutron star. Our results are compared with findings of other authors.

Electric current induced by an external magnetic field in the presence of electroweak matter

We study the generation of an electric current, along the external magnetic field, of fermions, interacting by parity violating electroweak forces with background matter. First, we discuss the situation of massive particles with nonzero anomalous magnetic moments. We show that the induced current is vanishing for such particles in the state of equilibrium. Then, the case of massless fermions is studied. We demonstrate that the contribution of the electroweak interaction is washed out from the expression for the current, which turns out to coincide with the prediction of the chiral magnetic effect. Our results are compared with findings of other authors.

Magnetic helicity evolution in a neutron star accounting for the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly

We analyze the role of the surface terms in the conservation law for the sum of the magnetic helicity density and the chiral imbalance of the charged particle densities. These terms are neglected in the Anomalous MagnetoHydroDynamics (AMHD), where infinite volume is considered typically. We discuss a finite volume system, such as a magnetized neutron star (NS), and study the contribution of the surface terms to the evolution of the magnetic helicity. Accounting for the fast washing out of the chiral imbalance in a nascent NS, we demonstrate that the surface terms contribution can potentially lead to the reconnection of magnetic field lines and subsequent gamma or X-ray bursts observed from magnetars. We derive the additional surface terms originated by the mean spin flux through a volume boundary arising due to macroscopic spin effects in electron-positron plasma. Then, comparing this quantum surface term with the classical one known in standard MHD, we find that the new quantum contribution prevails over classical term for the rigid NS rotation only.
