Noncommutative identities

This is a slightly edited version of my talk on Mathematische Arbeitstagung 2011, Bonn. I present a result relating noncommutative Laurent polynomials with algebraic functions, and show examples of integrability and Laurent phenomenon for free noncommutative variables.

Cohomological Hall algebra, exponential Hodge structures and motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants

We define a new type of Hall algebras associated e.g. with quivers with polynomial potentials. The main difference with the conventional definition is that we use cohomology of the stack of representations instead of constructible sheaves or functions. In order to take into account the potential we introduce a generalization of theory of mixed Hodge structures, related to exponential integrals. Generating series of our Cohomological Hall algebra is a generalization of the motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants introduced in arXiv:0811.2435. Also we prove a new integrality property of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

Lyapunov spectrum of square-tiled cyclic covers

A cyclic cover over the Riemann sphere branched at four points inherits a natural flat structure from the "pillow" flat structure on the basic sphere. We give an explicit formula for all individual Lyapunov exponents of the Hodge bundle over the corresponding arithmetic Teichmuller curve. The key technical element is evaluation of degrees of line subbundles of the Hodge bundle, corresponding to eigenspaces of the induced action of deck transformations.

Holonomic D-modules and positive characteristic

This article is based on the 5th Takagi Lectures delivered at the University of Tokyo in 2008. We discuss a hypothetical correspondence between holonomic D-modules on an algebraic variety X defined over a field of zero characteristic, and certain families of Lagrangian subvarieties in the cotangent bundle to X. The correspondence is based on the reduction to positive characteristic.

Motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants: summary of results

This is a short summary of main results of our paper arXiv:0811.2435 where the concept of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariant was introduced. It also contains a discussion of some open questions from the loc.cit., in particular, the geometry related to the split attractor flow.

Stability structures, motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants and cluster transformations

We define new invariants of 3d Calabi-Yau categories endowed with a stability structure. Intuitively, they count the number of semistable objects with fixed class in the K-theory of the category ("number of BPS states with given charge" in physics language). Formally, our motivic DT-invariants are elements of quantum tori over a version of the Grothendieck ring of varieties over the ground field. Via the quasi-classical limit "as the motive of affine line approaches to 1" we obtain numerical DT-invariants which are closely related to those introduced by Behrend. We study some properties of both motivic and numerical DT-invariants including the wall-crossing formulas and integrality. We discuss the relationship with the mathematical works (in the non-triangulated case) of Joyce, Bridgeland and Toledano-Laredo, as well as with works of physicists on Seiberg-Witten model (string junctions), classification of N=2 supersymmetric theories (Cecotti-Vafa) and structure of the moduli space of vector multiplets. Relating the theory of 3d Calabi-Yau categories with distinguished set of generators (called cluster collection) with the theory of quivers with potential we found the connection with cluster transformations and cluster varieties (both classical and quantum).

Notes on motives in finite characteristic

Motivic local systems over a curve in finite characteristic form a countable set endowed with an action of the absolute Galois group of rational numbers commuting with the Frobenius map. I will discuss three series of conjectures about such sets, based on an analogy with algebraic dynamics, on a formalism of commutative algebras of motivic integral operators, and on an analogy with 2-dimensional lattice models.

Quantization on Curves

Deformation quantization on varieties with singularities offers perspectives that are not found on manifolds. Essential deformations are classified by the Harrison component of Hochschild cohomology, that vanishes on smooth manifolds and reflects information about singularities. The Harrison 2-cochains are symmetric and are interpreted in terms of abelian $*$-products. This paper begins a study of abelian quantization on plane curves over $\Crm$, being algebraic varieties of the form R2/I where I is a polynomial in two variables; that is, abelian deformations of the coordinate algebra C[x,y]/(I). To understand the connection between the singularities of a variety and cohomology we determine the algebraic Hochschild (co-)homology and its Barr-Gerstenhaber-Schack decomposition. Homology is the same for all plane curves C[x,y]/(I), but the cohomology depends on the local algebra of the singularity of I at the origin.

On Malliavin measures, SLE and CFT

We describe relations between SLE processes, certain replacements of the Haar measure on the Virasoro group (which we call Malliavin measures), and domain walls in small massive perturbations of a CFT (like in Ising model).

Integrality of instanton numbers and p-adic B-model

We study integrality of instanton numbers (genus zero Gopakumar - Vafa invariants) for quintic and other Calabi-Yau manifolds. We start with the analysis of the case when the moduli space of complex structures is one-dimensional; later we show that our methods can be used to prove integrality in general case. We give an expression of instanton numbers in terms of Frobenius map on $p$-adic cohomology ; the proof of integrality is based on this expression.

The Jacobian Conjecture is stably equivalent to the Dixmier Conjecture

The Jacobian conjecture in dimension $n$ asserts that any polynomial endomorphism of $n$-dimensional affine space over a field of zero characteristic, with the Jacobian equal 1, is invertible. The Dixmier conjecture in rank $n$ asserts that any endomorphism of the $n$-th Weyl algebra (the algebra of polynomial differential operators in $n$ variables) is invertible. We prove that the Jacobian conjecture in dimension $2n$ implies the Dixmier conjecture in rank $n$. Together with a well-known implication in the opposite direction, it shows that the stable Jacobian and Dixmier conjectures are equivalent. The main tool of the proof is the reduction to finite characteristic. After the paper was finished we have learned that the main result was already published by Y.Tsuchimoto in Osaka Journal of Mathematics Volume 42, Number 2 (June 2005). His proof is different.

Automorphisms of the Weyl algebra

We discuss a conjecture which says that the automorphism group of the Weyl algebra in characteristic zero is canonically isomorphic to the automorphism group of the corresponding Poisson algebra of classical polynomial symbols. Several arguments in favor of this conjecture are presented, all based on the consideration of the reduction of the Weyl algebra to positive characteristic.

Symmetries of WDVV equations

We say that a function F(tau) obeys WDVV equations, if for a given invertible symmetric matrix eta^{alpha beta} and all tau \in T \subset R^n, the expressions c^{alpha}_{beta gamma}(tau) = eta^{alpha lambda} c_{lambda beta gamma}(tau) = eta^{alpha lambda} \partial_{lambda} \partial_{beta} \partial_{gamma} F can be considered as structure constants of commutative associative algebra; the matrix eta_{alpha beta} inverse to η^{αβ} determines an invariant scalar product on this algebra. A function x^{alpha}(z, tau) obeying \partial_{alpha} \partial_{beta} x^{gamma} (z, tau) = z^{-1} c^{varepsilon}_{alpha beta} \partial_{epsilon} x^{gamma} (z, tau) is called a calibration of a solution of WDVV equations. We show that there exists an infinite-dimensional group acting on the space of calibrated solutions of WDVV equations (in different form such a group was constructed in [2]). We describe the action of Lie algebra of this group.

Affine structures and non-archimedean analytic spaces

In this paper we propose a way to construct an analytic space over a non-archimedean field, starting with a real manifold with an affine structure which has integral monodromy. Our construction is motivated by the junction of Homological Mirror conjecture and geometric Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. In particular, we glue from "flat pieces" an analytic K3 surface. As a byproduct of our approach we obtain an action of an arithmetic subgroup of the group $SO(1,18)$ by piecewise-linear transformations on the 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$ equipped with naturally defined singular affine structure.

Homological mirror symmetry and torus fibrations

In this paper we discuss two major conjectures in Mirror Symmetry: Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture about torus fibrations, and the homological mirror conjecture (about an equivalence of the Fukaya category of a Calabi-Yau manifold and the derived category of coherent sheaves on the dual Calabi-Yau manifold). Our point of view on the origin of torus fibrations is based on the standard differential-geometric picture of collapsing Riemannian manifolds as well as analogous considerations for Conformal Field Theories. It seems to give a description of mirror manifolds much more transparent than the one in terms of D-branes. Also we make an attempt to prove the homological mirror conjecture using the torus fibrations. In the case of abelian varieties, and for a large class of Lagrangian submanifolds, we obtain an identification of Massey products on the symplectic and holomorphic sides. Tools used in the proof are of a mixed origin: not so classical Morse theory, homological perturbation theory and non-archimedean analysis.

On Poly(ana)logs I

We investigate a connection between the differential of polylogarithms (as considered by Cathelineau) and a finite variant of them. This allows to answer a question raised by Kontsevich concerning the construction of functional equations for the finite analogs, using in part the p-adic version of polylogarithms and recent work of Besser. Kontsevich's original unpublished note is supplied (with his kind permission) in an "Appendix" at the end of the paper.

Deformations of algebras over operads and Deligne's conjecture

In present paper we develop the deformation theory of operads and algebras over operads. Free resolutions (constructed via Boardman-Vogt approach) are used in order to describe formal moduli spaces of deformations. We apply the general theory to the proof of Deligne's conjecture. The latter says that the Hochschild complex of an associative algebra carries a canonical structure of a dg-algebra over the chain operad of the little discs operad. In the course of the proof we construct an operad of geometric nature which acts on the Hochschild complex. It seems to be different from the brace operad (the latter was used in the previous approaches to the Deligne's conjecture). It follows from our results that the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group acts (homotopically) on the moduli space of structures of 2-algebras on the Hochschild complex. In the Appendix we develop a theory of piecewise algebraic chains and forms. It is suitable for real semialgebraic manifolds with corners (like Fulton-Macpherson compactifications of the configuration spaces of points).
