Operads and Motives in Deformation Quantization

This paper is dedicated to the memory of Moshe Flato, and will appear in Lett. Math. Phys. 48 (1) It became clear during last 5-6 years that the algebraic world of associative algebras (abelian categories, triangulated categories, etc) has many deep connections with the geometric world of two-dimensional surfaces. One of manifestations of this is Deligne's conjecture (1993) which says that on the cohomological Hochschild complex of any associative algebra naturally acts the operad of singular chains in the little discs operad. Recently D. Tamarkin discovered that the operad of chains of the little discs operad is formal, i.e. it is homotopy equivalent to its cohomology. From this fact and from Deligne's conjecture follows almost immediately my formality result in deformation quantization. I review the situation as it looks now. Also I conjecture that the motivic Galois group acts on deformation quantizations, and speculate on possible relations of higher-dimensional algebras and of motives to quantum field theories.

Noncommutative smooth spaces

We make an attempt to develop "noncommutative algebraic geometry" in which noncommutative affine schemes are in one-to-one correspondence with associative algebras. In the first part we discuss various aspects of smoothness in affine noncommutative algebraic geometry. The main example for us is the noncommutative affine space. The algebra of functions on this space is free finitely generated algebra. We propose a general correspondence principle which allows us to give definitions of various differential-geometric structures in the noncommutative setting. In the second part we propose a definition of noncommutative spaces based on a version of flat topology. Our category of noncommutative spaces contains as full subcategories both the category of quasi-compact separated schemes and the opposite category to the category of associative algebras. In the third part we describe the noncommutative projective space and the derived category of coherent sheaves on it.

Deformation quantization of Poisson manifolds, I

I prove that every finite-dimensional Poisson manifold X admits a canonical deformation quantization. Informally, it means that the set of equivalence classes of associative algebras close to the algebra of functions on X is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of equivalence classes of Poisson structures on X modulo diffeomorphisms. In fact, a more general statement is proven ("Formality conjecture"), relating the Lie superalgebra of polyvector fields on X and the Hochschild complex of the algebra of functions on X. Coefficients in explicit formulas for the deformed product can be interpreted as correlators in a topological open string theory, although I do not use explicitly the language of functional integrals. One of corollaries is a justification of the orbit method in the representation theory.

Relations between the correlators of the topological sigma-model coupled to gravity

We prove a new recursive relation between the correlators $< τ_{d_1}γ_1...τ_{d_n}γ_n >_{g,β}$, which together with known relations allows one to express all of them through the full system of Gromov-Witten invariants in the sense of Kontsevich-Manin and the intersection indices of tautological classes on $\bar{M}_{g,n}$, effectively calculable in view of earlier results due to Mumford, Kontsevich, Getzler, and Faber. This relation shows that a linear change of coordinates of the big phase space transforms the potential with gravitational descendants to another function defined completely in terms of the Gromov-Witten correspondence and the intersection theory on $V^n\times\bar{M}_{g,n}$. We then extend the formalism of gravitational descendants from quantum cohomology to more general Frobenius manifolds and Cohomological Field Theories.

Homological Algebra of Mirror Symmetry

This is my talk at ICM, Zurich 1994. It contains a short introduction, two basic examples and a refined version of the Mirror Conjecture formulated in terms of homological algebra.

Geometry of determinants of elliptic operators

This paper is essentially a short version of hep-th/9404046. We compute multiplicative anomaly det(AB)/(detA detB) =F(A,B) for elliptic pseudo-differential operators (PDOs) A, B on a closed manifold M in terms of their symbols. We prove that F(A,B)=1 for elliptic differential operators close to positive-definite ones on an odd-dimensional M. For such M we introduce a holomorphic determinant. Its monodromy lies in a finite group of roots of unity. In general case, we relate the multiplicative anomaly with a central extension of the group of elliptic symbols and with an invariant quadratic form on this extension. We compute the Lie algebra of the central extension in terms of logarithmic symbols. The main tool is a new trace-type functional defined on classical PDOs of non-integer orders. A canonical det of elliptic PDOs generalizing the zeta-regularized det is introduced.

Determinants of elliptic pseudo-differential operators

Determinants of invertible pseudo-differential operators (PDOs) close to positive self-adjoint ones are defined throughthe zeta-function regularization. We define a multiplicative anomaly as the ratio $\det(AB)/(\det(A)\det(B))$ considered as a functionon pairs of elliptic PDOs. We obtained an explicit formula for the multiplicative anomaly in terms of symbols of operators. For a certain natural classof PDOs on odd-dimensional manifolds generalizing the class of ellipticdifferential operators, the multiplicative anomaly is identically $1$. For elliptic PDOs from this class a holomorphic determinant and a determinant for zero orders PDOs are introduced. Using various algebraic, analytic, and topological tools we study local and global properties of the multiplicative anomaly and of the determinant Lie group closely related with it. The Lie algebra for the determinant Lie group has a description in terms of symbols only. Our main discovery is that there is a {\em quadratic non-linearity} hidden in the definition of determinants of PDOs through zeta-functions. The natural explanation of this non-linearity follows from complex-analytic properties of a new trace functional TR on PDOs of non-integer orders. Using TR we easily reproduce known facts about noncommutative residues of PDOs and obtain several new results. In particular, we describe a structure of derivatives of zeta-functions at zero as of functions on logarithms of elliptic PDOs. We propose several definitions extending zeta-regularized determinants to general elliptic PDOs. For elliptic PDOs of nonzero complex orders we introduce a canonical determinant in its natural domain of definition.
