Path Integral Estimates of the Quantum Fluctuations of the Relative Soliton-Soliton Velocity in a Gross-Pitevskii Breather

In this paper, the quantum fluctuations of the relative velocity of constituent solitons in a Gross-Pitaevskii breather are studied. The breather is confined in a weak harmonic trap. These fluctuations are monitored, indirectly, using a two-body correlation function measured at a quarter of the harmonic period after the breather creation. The results of an ab initio quantum Monte Carlo calculations, based on the Feynman-Kac path integration method, are compared with the analytical predictions using the recently suggested approach within the Bogoliubov approximation, and a good agreement is obtained.

Universal shock-wave propagation in one-dimensional Bose fluids

We propose a protocol for creating moving, robust dispersive shock waves in interacting one-dimensional Bose fluids. The fluid is prepared in a moving state by phase imprinting and sent against the walls of a box trap. We demonstrate that the thus formed shock wave oscillates for several periods and is robust against thermal fluctuations. We show that this large amplitude dynamics is universal across the whole spectrum of the interatomic interaction strength, from weak to strong interactions, and it is fully controlled by the sound velocity inside the fluid. Our work provides a generalization of the dispersive-shock-wave paradigm to the many-body regime. The shock waves we propose are within reach for ultracold atom experiments.

Quantum fluctuations of the center-of-mass and relative parameters of NLS breathers

We study quantum fluctuations of macroscopic parameters of an NLS breathers, i.e., the second-order soliton solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Uncertainty relations for the parameters are derived and compared to similar relations for fundamental solitons. We compare two models for the state of the quantum field of fluctuations surrounding the classical field of the Bose-Einstein condensate: a conventionally used, computationally convenient "white noise", and a correlated noise which assumes that the breather has been created from a fundamental soliton, by means of the application of the factor-of-four quench of the nonlinearity strength. Theoretical methods used in the work are well suited for a large number of particles, $N$. We thus confirm the possibility of experimental observation of macroscopic quantum fluctuations, which is suggested by an extrapolation to large $N$ of recently reported low-$N$ Bethe-ansatz results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119 220401 (2017)].

Enhancing sensitivity to rotations with quantum solitonic currents

Quantum mechanics is characterized by quantum coherence and entanglement. After having discovered how these fundamental concepts govern physical reality, scientists have been devoting intense efforts to harness them to shape future science and technology. This is a highly nontrivial task because most often quantum coherence and entanglement are difficult to access. Here, we demonstrate the enhancement of the sensitivity of a quantum many-body system with specific coherence and entanglement properties. Our physical system is made of strongly correlated attracting neutral bosons flowing in a ring-shaped potential of mesoscopic size. Because of attractive interactions, quantum analogs of bright solitons are formed. As a genuine quantum-many-body feature, we demonstrate that angular momentum fractionalization occurs. As a consequence, the matter-wave current in our system can react to very small changes of rotation or other artificial gauge fields. We work out a protocol to entangle such quantum solitonic currents, allowing them to operate rotation sensors and gyroscopes to Heisenberg-limited sensitivity.

Creation and Characterization of Matter-Wave Breathers

We report the creation of quasi-1D excited matter-wave solitons, "breathers", by quenching the strength of the interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interactions. We characterize the resulting breathing dynamics and quantify the effects of the aspect ratio of the confining potential, the strength of the quench, and the proximity of the 1D-3D crossover for the 2-soliton breather. We furthermore demonstrate the complex dynamics of a 3-soliton breather created by a stronger interaction quench. Our experimental results, which compare well with numerical simulations, provide a pathway for utilizing matter-wave breathers to explore quantum effects in large many-body systems.

Resilience of constituent solitons in multisoliton scattering off barriers

We introduce "superheated integrability," which produces characteristic staircase transmission plots for barrier collisions of breathers of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The effect makes tangible the inverse scattering transform, which treats the velocities and norms of the constituent solitons as the real and imaginary parts of the eigenvalues of the Lax operator. If all the norms are much greater than the velocities, an integrability-breaking potential may nonperturbatively change the velocities while having no measurable effect on the norms. This could be used to improve atomic interferometers.

Four-dimensional reflection groups and electrostatics

We present a new class of electrostatics problems that are exactly solvable by adding finitely many image charges. Given a charge at some location inside a cavity bounded by up to four conducting grounded segments of spheres: if the spheres have a symmetry derived via a stereographic projection from a 4D finite reflection group, then this is a solvable generalization of the familiar problem of a charge inside a spherical cavity. There are 19 three-parametric families of finite groups formed by inversions relative to at most four spheres, each member of each family giving a solvable problem. We solve a sample problem which derives from the reflection group $\mathbf{D}_{4}$ and requires 191 image charges.

Splitting of nonlinear-Schrödinger breathers by linear and nonlinear localized potentials

We consider evolution of one-dimensional nonlinear-Schrödinger (NLS) two-soliton complexes (breathers) with narrow repulsive or attractive potentials (barrier or well, respectively). By means of systematic simulations, we demonstrate that the breather may either split into constituent fundamental solitons (fragments) moving in opposite directions, or bounce as a whole from the barrier. A critical initial position of the breather, which separates these scenarios, is predicted by an analytical approximation. The narrow potential well tends to trap the fragment with the larger amplitude, while the other one escapes. The interaction of the breather with a nonlinear potential barrier is also considered. The ratio of amplitudes of the emerging free solitons may be different from the 3:1 value suggested by the exact NLS solution, especially in the case of the nonlinear potential barrier. Post-splitting velocities of escaping solitons may be predicted by an approximation based on the energy balance.

Raise and fall of a bright soliton in an optical lattice

We study an ultracold atomic gas with attractive interactions in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that its excitation spectrum displays a quantum soliton band, corresponding to $N$-particle bound states, and a continuum band of other, mostly extended, states. For a system of a finite size, the two branches are degenerate in energy for weak interactions, while a gap opens above a threshold value for the interaction strength. We find that the interplay between degenerate extended and bound states has important consequences for both static and dynamical properties of the system. In particular, the solitonic states turn out to be protected from spatial perturbations and random disorder. We discuss how such dynamics implies that our system effectively provides an example of a quantum many-body system that, with the variation of the bosonic lattice filling, crosses over from integrable non-ergodic to non-integrable ergodic dynamics, through non-integrable non-ergodic regimes.

Traces of integrability in scattering of one-dimensional dimers on a barrier

We consider molecules made of two one-dimensional short-range-interacting bosonic atoms. We show that in the process of scattering of these molecules off a narrow barrier, odd incident waves produce \emph{no unbound atoms, even when the incident energy exceeds the dissociation threshold}. This effect is a consequence of a prohibition on chemical reactions acting in a generally unphysical Bethe Ansatz integrable system of a $C_{2}$-type, with which our system shares the spatially odd eigenstates. We suggest several experimental implementations of the effect. We also propose to use the monomer production as an alternative read-out channel in an atom interferometer: unlike in the standard interferometric schemes, no spatial separation of the output channels will be required.

Metastability versus collapse following a quench in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with attractive two-body interactions in a cigar-shaped trap, initially prepared in its ground state for a given negative scattering length, which is quenched to a larger absolute value of the scattering length. Using the mean-field approximation, we compute numerically, for an experimentally relevant range of aspect ratios and initial strengths of the coupling, two critical values of quench: one corresponds to the weakest attraction strength the quench to which causes the system to collapse before completing even a single return from the narrow configuration ("perihelion") in its breathing cycle. The other is a similar critical point for the occurrence of collapse before completing two returns. In the latter case, we also compute the limiting value, as we keep increasing the strength of the post-quench attraction towards its critical value, of the time interval between the first two perihelia. We also use a Gaussian variational model to estimate the critical quenched attraction strength below which the system is stable against the collapse for long times. These time intervals and critical attraction strengths---apart from being fundamental properties of nonlinear dynamics of self-attractive BECs---may provide clues to the design of upcoming experiments that are trying to create robust BEC breathers.

Dissociation of one-dimensional matter-wave breathers due to quantum many-body effects

We use the ab initio Bethe Ansatz dynamics to predict the dissociation of one-dimensional cold-atom breathers that are created by a quench from a fundamental soliton. We find that the dissociation is a robust quantum many-body effect, while in the mean-field (MF) limit the dissociation is forbidden by the integrability of the underlying nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The analysis demonstrates the possibility to observe quantum many-body effects without leaving the MF range of experimental parameters. We find that the dissociation time is of the order of a few seconds for a typical atomic-soliton setting.

Integrable families of hard-core particles with unequal masses in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

We show that the dynamics of particles in a one-dimensional harmonic trap with hard-core interactions can be solvable for certain arrangements of unequal masses. For any number of particles, there exist two families of unequal mass particles that have integrable dynamics, and there are additional exceptional cases for three, four and five particles. The integrable mass families are classified by Coxeter reflection groups and the corresponding solutions are Bethe ansatz-like superpositions of hyperspherical harmonics in the relative hyperangular coordinates that are then restricted to sectors of fixed particle order. We also provide evidence for superintegrability of these Coxeter mass families and conjecture maximal superintegrability.

A connection between non-local one-body and local three-body correlations of the Lieb-Liniger model

We derive a connection between the fourth coefficient of the short-distance Taylor expansion of the one-body correlation function, and the local three-body correlation function of the Lieb-Liniger model of $δ$-interacting spinless bosons in one dimension. This connection, valid at arbitrary interaction strength, involves the fourth moment of the density of quasi-momenta. Generalizing recent conjectures, we propose approximate analytical expressions for the fourth coefficient covering the whole range of repulsive interactions, validated by comparison with accurate numerics. In particular, we find that the fourth coefficient changes sign at interaction strength $γ_c\simeq 3.816$, while the first three coefficients of the Taylor expansion of the one-body correlation function retain the same sign throughout the whole range of interaction strengths.

Numerical Realization of Bethe Rapidities in cold quenched systems by Feynman-Kac path integral method

We apply Quantum Monte Carlo technique to analyze the non equlibrium state of a trapped 1d Bose gas just after the quenching of the confining potential. As a matter of fact we solve the time dependent Schroedinger equation for the system of one-dimensional bosons interacting via delta potential in an infinite square well (namely Lieb-Liniger model) using Feynman-Kac path integral Monte Carlo technique. These 1d systems are extremely interesting and worth investigating in the context of non-equilibrium dynamics of interacting many body systems. Even though the systems can be realized experimentally and are exactly solvable by Bethe Ansatz, the diffusion Monte Carlo is proven to be more efficient in most circumstances than other mean value techniques as the numerical method can incorporate the finite interaction very easily. Using N particle ground state wavefunction for one-dimensional hard core bosons in a harmonic trap, we develop an algorithm to calculate density. We also observe the change in the density distribution by changing the length of the hard wall box. After an increase in the box length, we still get a self-similar density distribution.

Creating Entanglement Using Integrals of Motion

A quantum Galilean cannon is a 1D sequence of $N$ hard-core particles with special mass ratios, and a hard wall; conservation laws due to the reflection group $A_{N}$ prevent both classical stochastization and quantum diffraction. It is realizable through specie-alternating mutually repulsive bosonic soliton trains. We show that an initial disentangled state can evolve into one where the heavy and light particles are entangled, and propose a sensor, containing $N_{\text{total}}$ atoms, with a $\sqrt{N_{\text{total}}}$ times higher sensitivity than in a one-atom sensor with $N_{\text{total}}$ repetitions.

Multiband Effects and the Bose-Hubbard Model in One-Dimensional Lattices

We study phase diagrams of one-dimensional bosons with contact interactions in the presence of a lattice. We use the worm algorithm in continuous space and focus on the incommensurate superfluid Mott-insulator transition. Our results are compared to those from the one-band Bose-Hubbard model. When Wannier states are used to determine the Bose-Hubbard model parameters, the comparison unveils an apparent breakdown of the one-band description for strong interactions, even for the Mott-insulating state with an average of one particle per site ($n=1$) in deep lattices. We introduce an inverse confined scattering analysis to obtain the ratio $U/J$, with which the Bose-Hubbard model provides correct results for strong interactions, deep lattices, and $n=1$.

An exactly solvable quantum four-body problem associated with the symmetries of an octacube

In this article, we show that eigenenergies and eigenstates of a system consisting of four one-dimensional hard-core particles with masses $6m$, $2m$, $m$, and $3m$ in a hard-wall box can be found exactly using Bethe Ansatz. The Ansatz is based on the exceptional affine reflection group $\tilde{F}_{4}$ associated with the symmetries and tiling properties of an octacube---a Platonic solid unique to four dimensions, with no three-dimensional analogues. We also uncover the Liouville integrability structure of our problem: the four integrals of motion in involution are identified as invariant polynomials of the finite reflection group $F_{4}$, taken as functions of the components of momenta.
