Determination of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

Using in-plane field dependence of the precessional flow of chiral domain walls (DWs) to simultaneously determine bulk and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs) is proposed. It is found that effective fields of bulk and interfacial DMIs have respectively transverse and longitudinal components that affect differently the motion of chiral DWs in magnetic narrow heterostructure strips. The in-plane field dependence of DW velocity has a dome-shape or a canyon-shape, depending on whether the driving force is an in-plane current or an out-of-plane magnetic field. The responses of their center shifts to the reversal of topological wall charge and current/field direction uniquely determine the nature and strength of DMI therein. Operable procedures are proposed and applied to explain existing experimental data.

Ultra-high differential mobility and velocity of Néel walls in spin valves with planar-transverse polarizers under low perpendicularly injected currents

Transverse domain wall (TDW) dynamics in long and narrow spin valves with perpendicular current injection is theoretically investigated. We demonstrate that stable traveling-wave motion of TDWs with finite velocity survives for strong enough planar-transverse polarizers. For typical ferromagnetic materials (for example, Co) and achievable spin polarization ($P=0.6$), TDWs acquire a velocity of $10^3$ m/s under a current density below $10^7$ $\mathrm{A/cm^2}$. This efficiency is comparable with that of perpendicular polarizers. More importantly, in this case the wall has ultra-high "differential mobility" around the onset of stable wall excitation. Our results open new possibilities for developing magnetic nanodevices based on TDW propagation with low energy consumption. Also, analytics for parallel and perpendicular polarizers perfectly explains existing simulation findings. Finally, further boosting of TDWs by external uniform transverse magnetic fields is investigated and turns out to be efficient.

Continuous-variable QKD over 50km commercial fiber

The continuous-variable version of quantum key distribution (QKD) offers the advantages (over discrete-variable systems) of higher secret key rates in metropolitan areas as well as the use of standard telecom components that can operate at room temperature. An important step in the real-world adoption of continuous-variable QKD is the deployment of field tests over commercial fibers. Here we report two different field tests of a continuous-variable QKD system through commercial fiber networks in Xi'an and Guangzhou over distances of 30.02 km (12.48 dB) and 49.85 km (11.62 dB), respectively. We achieve secure key rates two orders-of-magnitude higher than previous field test demonstrations. This is achieved by developing a fully automatic control system to create stable excess noise and by applying a rate-adaptive reconciliation protocol to achieve a high reconciliation efficiency with high success probability. Our results pave the way to achieving continuous-variable QKD in a metropolitan setting.

Understanding current-driven dynamics of magnetic Néel walls in heavy metal/ferromagnetic metal/oxide trilayers

We consider analytically current-driven dynamics of magnetic Néel walls in heavy metal/ferromagnetic metal/oxide trilayers where strong spin-orbit coupling and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (i-DMI) coexist. We show that field-like spin-orbit torque (FL-SOT) with effective field along $\mathbf{n}\times\hat{\mathbf{J}}$ ($\mathbf{n}$ being the interface normal and $\hat{\mathbf{J}}$ being the charge current direction) and i-DMI induced torque can both lead to Walker breakdown suppression meanwhile leaving the wall mobility (velocity versus current density) unchanged. However, i-DMI itself can not induce the "universal absence of Walker breakdown" (UAWB) while FL-SOT exceeding a certain threshold can. Finitely-enlarged Walker limits before UAWB are theoretically calculated and well explain existing data. In addition, change in wall mobility and even its sign-inversion can be understood only if the anti-damping-like (ADL) SOT is appended. For Néel walls in ferromagnetic-metal layer with both perpendicular and in-plane anisotropies, we have calculated the respective modifications of wall mobility under the coexistence of spin-transfer torque, SOTs and i-DMI. Analytics shows that in trilayers with perpendicular anisotropy strong enough spin Hall angle and appropriate sign of i-DMI parameter can lead to sign-inversion in wall mobility even under small enough current density, while in those with in-plane anisotropy this only occurs for current density in a specific range.

Engineering planar transverse domain walls in biaxial magnetic nanostrips by tailoring transverse magnetic fields with uniform orientation

Designing and realizing various magnetization textures in magnetic nanostructures are essential for developing novel magnetic nanodevices in modern information industry. Among all these textures, planar transverse domain walls (pTDWs) are the simplest and the most basic, which make them popular in device physics. In this work, we report the engineering of pTDWs with arbitrary tilting attitude in biaxial magnetic nanostrips by transverse magnetic field profiles with uniform orientation but tunable strength distribution. Both statics and axial-field-driven dynamics of these pTDWs are analytically investigated. It turns out that for statics these pTDWs are robust again disturbances which are not too abrupt, while for dynamics it can be tailored to acquire higher velocity than Walker's ansatz predicts. These results should provide inspirations for designing magnetic nanodevices with novel one-dimensional magnetization textures, such as 360$^\circ$ walls, or even two-dimensional ones, for example vortices, skyrmions, etc.

Spin-mixing-tunneling network model for Anderson transitions in two-dimensional disordered spinful electrons

We consider Anderson transitions in two-dimensional spinful electron gases subject to random scalar potentials with time-reversal-symmetric spin-mixing tunneling (SMT) and spin-preserving tunneling (SPT) at potential saddle points (PSPs). A symplectic quantum network model, named as SMT-QNM, is constructed in which SMT and SPT have the same status and contribute independent tunneling channels rather than sharing a total-probability-fixed one. Two-dimensional continuous Dirac Hamiltonian is then extracted out from this discrete network model as the generator of certain unitary transformation. With the help of high-accuracy numerics based on transfer matrix technique, finite-size analysis on two-terminal conductance and normalized localization length provides a phase diagram drawn in the SMT-SPT plane. As a manifestation of symplectic ensembles, a normal-metal (NM) phase emerges between the quantum spin Hall (QSH) and normal-insulator (NI) phases when SMT appears. We systematically analyze the quantum phases on the boundary and in the interior of the phase space. Particularly, the phase diagram is closely related to that of disordered three-dimensional weak topological insulators by appropriate parameter mapping. At last, if time-reversal symmetry in electron trajectories between PSPs is destroyed, the system falls into unitary class with no more NM phase. A direct SMT-driven transition from QSH to NI phases exists and can be explained by spin-flip backscattering between the degenerate doublets at the same sample edge.

General planar transverse domain walls realized by optimized transverse magnetic field pulses in magnetic biaxial nanowires

We report the realization of a planar transverse domain wall (TDW) with arbitrary tilting angle in a magnetic biaxial nanowire under a transverse magnetic field (TMF) pulse with fixed strength and optimized orientation profile. We smooth any twisting in azimuthal angle plane of a TDW and thus completely decouple the polar and azimuthal degrees of freedom. The analytical differential equation that describes the polar angle distribution is then derived and the resulting solution is not a Walker-ansatz form. With this optimized TMF pulse comoving, the field-driven dynamics of the planar TDW is investigated. It turns out the comoving TMF pulse increases the wall velocity under the same axial driving field. These results will help to design a series of modern logic and memory nanodevices based on general planar TDWs.

Analysis of a non-autonomous mutualism model driven by Levy jumps

This article is concerned with a mutualism ecological model with Levy noise. The local existence and uniqueness of a positive solution are obtained with positive initial value, and the asymptotic behavior to the problem is studied. Moreover, we show that the solution is stochastically bounded and stochastic permanence. The sufficient conditions for the system to be extinct are given and the condition for the system to be persistent are also established.

Multimodal Plasmonics in Fused Colloidal Networks

Harnessing the optical properties of noble metals down to the nanometer-scale is a key step towards fast and low-dissipative information processing. At the 10-nm length scale, metal crystallinity and patterning as well as probing of surface plasmon (SP) properties must be controlled with a challenging high level of precision. Here, we demonstrate that ultimate lateral confinement and delocalization of SP modes are simultaneously achieved in extended self-assembled networks comprising linear chains of partially fused gold nanoparticles. The spectral and spatial distributions of the SP modes associated with the colloidal superstructures are evidenced by performing monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy with a nanometer-sized electron probe. We prepare the metallic bead strings by electron beam-induced interparticle fusion of nanoparticle networks. The fused superstructures retain the native morphology and crystallinity but develop very low energy SP modes that are capable of supporting long range and spectrally tunable propagation in nanoscale waveguides.

The spreading fronts in a mutualistic model with delay

This article is concerned with a system of semilinear parabolic equations with two free boundaries describing the spreading fronts of the invasive species in a mutualistic ecological model. The local existence and uniqueness of a classical solution are obtained and the asymptotic behavior of the free boundary problem is studied. Our results indicate that two free boundaries tend monotonically to finite or infinite at the same time, and the free boundary problem admits a global slow solution with unbounded free boundaries if the inter-specific competitions are strong, while if the inter-specific competitions are weak, there exist the blowup solution and global fast solution.
