Characterizing quantum correlations in spin chains

The growth in the demand for precisely crafted many-body systems of spin-$1/2$ particles/qubits is due to their top-notch versatility in application-oriented quantum-enhanced protocols and the fundamental tests of quantum theory. Here we address the question: how quantum is a chain of spins? We demonstrate that a single element of the density matrix carries the answer. Properly analyzed it brings information about the extent of the many-body entanglement and the non-locality. This method can be used to tailor and witness highly non-classical effects in many-body systems with possible applications to quantum computing, ultra-precise metrology or large-scale tests of quantum mechanics. As a proof of principle, we investigate the extend of non-locality and entanglement in ground states and thermal states of experimentally accessible spin chains.

Nahm sums, quiver A-polynomials and topological recursion

We consider a large class of $q$-series that have the structure of Nahm sums, or equivalently motivic generating series for quivers. First, we initiate a systematic analysis and classification of classical and quantum A-polynomials associated to such $q$-series. These quantum quiver A-polynomials encode recursion relations satisfied by the above series, while classical A-polynomials encode asymptotic expansion of those series. Second, we postulate that those series, as well as their quantum quiver A-polynomials, can be reconstructed by means of the topological recursion. There is a large class of interesting quiver A-polynomials of genus zero, and for a number of them we confirm the above conjecture by explicit calculations. In view of recently found dualities, for an appropriate choice of quivers, these results have a direct interpretation in topological string theory, knot theory, counting of lattice paths, and related topics. In particular it follows, that various quantities characterizing those systems, such as motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants, various knot invariants, etc., have the structure compatible with the topological recursion and can be reconstructed by its means.

Generalized hydrodynamics regime from the thermodynamic bootstrap program

Within the generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) formalism for quantum integrable models, it is possible to compute simple expressions for a number of correlation functions at the Eulerian scale. Specializing to integrable relativistic field theories, we show the same correlators can be computed as a sum over form factors, the GHD regime corresponding to the leading contribution with one particle-hole pair on a finite energy-density background. The thermodynamic bootstrap program (TBP) formalism was recently introduced as an axiomatic approach to computing such finite-energy-density form factors for integrable field theories. We derive a new axiom within the TBP formalism from which we easily recover the predicted GHD Eulerian correlators. We also compute higher form factor contributions, with more particle-hole pairs, within the TBP, allowing for the computation of correlation functions in the diffusive, and beyond, GHD regimes. The two particle-hole form factors agree with expressions recently conjectured within the~GHD.

Linearized regime of the generalized hydrodynamics with diffusion

We consider the generalized hydrodynamics including the recently introduced diffusion term for an initially inhomogeneous state in the Lieb-Liniger model. We construct a general solution to the linearized hydrodynamics equation in terms of the eigenstates of the evolution operator and study two prototypical classes of initial states: delocalized and localized spatially. We exhibit some general features of the resulting dynamics, among them, we highlight the difference between the ballistic and diffusive evolution. The first one governs a spatial scrambling, the second, a scrambling of the quasi-particles content. We also go one step beyond the linear regime and discuss the evolution of the zero momentum mode that does not evolve in the linear regime.

Donaldson-Thomas invariants, torus knots, and lattice paths

In this paper we find and explore the correspondence between quivers, torus knots, and combinatorics of counting paths. Our first result pertains to quiver representation theory -- we find explicit formulae for classical generating functions and Donaldson-Thomas invariants of an arbitrary symmetric quiver. We then focus on quivers corresponding to $(r,s)$ torus knots and show that their classical generating functions, in the extremal limit and framing $rs$, are generating functions of lattice paths under the line of the slope $r/s$. Generating functions of such paths satisfy extremal A-polynomial equations, which immediately follows after representing them in terms of the Duchon grammar. Moreover, these extremal A-polynomial equations encode Donaldson-Thomas invariants, which provides an interesting example of algebraicity of generating functions of these invariants. We also find a quantum generalization of these statements, i.e. a relation between motivic quiver generating functions, quantum extremal knot invariants, and $q$-weighted path counting. Finally, in the case of the unknot, we generalize this correspondence to the full HOMFLY-PT invariants and counting of Schröder paths.

Thermodynamic bootstrap program for integrable QFT's: Form factors and correlation functions at finite energy density

We study the form factors of local operators of integrable QFT's between states with finite energy density. These states arise, for example, at finite temperature, or from a generalized Gibbs ensemble. We generalize Smirnov's form factor axioms, formulating them for a set of particle/hole excitations on top of the thermodynamic background, instead of the vacuum. We show that exact form factors can be found as minimal solutions of these new axioms. The thermodynamic form factors can be used to construct correlation functions on thermodynamic states. The expression found for the two-point function is similar to the conjectured LeClair-Mussardo formula, but using the new form factors dressed by the thermodynamic background, and with all singularities properly regularized. We study the different infrared asymptotics of the thermal two-point function, and show there generally exist two different regimes, manifesting massive exponential decay, or effectively gapless behavior at long distances, respectively. As an example, we compute the few-excitations form factors of vertex operators for the sinh-Gordon model.

Topological strings, strips and quivers

We find a direct relation between quiver representation theory and open topological string theory on a class of toric Calabi-Yau manifolds without compact four-cycles, also referred to as strip geometries. We show that various quantities that characterize open topological string theory on these manifolds, such as partition functions, Gromov-Witten invariants, or open BPS invariants, can be expressed in terms of characteristics of the moduli space of representations of the corresponding quiver. This has various deep consequences; in particular, expressing open BPS invariants in terms of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants, immediately proves integrality of the former ones. Taking advantage of the relation to quivers we also derive explicit expressions for classical open BPS invariants for an arbitrary strip geometry, which lead to a large set of number theoretic integrality statements. Furthermore, for a specific framing, open topological string partition functions for strip geometries take form of generalized $q$-hypergeometric functions, which leads to a novel representation of these functions in terms of quantum dilogarithms and integral invariants. We also study quantum curves and A-polynomials associated to quivers, various limits thereof, and their specializations relevant for strip geometries. The relation between toric manifolds and quivers can be regarded as a generalization of the knots-quivers correspondence to more general Calabi-Yau geometries.

Particle-hole pairs and density-density correlations in the Lieb-Liniger model

We review the recently introduced thermodynamic form factors for pairs of particle-hole excitations on finite-entropy states in the Lieb-Liniger model. We focus on the density operator and we show how the form factors can be used for analytic computations of dynamical correlation functions. We derive a new representation for the form factors and we discuss some aspects of their structure. We rigorously show that in the small momentum limit (or equivalently, on hydrodynamic scales) a single particle-hole excitation fully saturates the spectral sum and we also discuss the contribution from two particle-hole pairs. Finally we show that thermodynamic form factors can be also used to study the ground state correlations and to derive the edge exponents.

Edge singularities and quasi-long-range order in non-equilibrium steady states

The singularities of the dynamical response function are one of the most remarkable effects in many-body interacting systems. However in one dimension these divergences only exist strictly at zero temperature, making their observation very difficult in most cold atomic experimental settings. Moreover the presence of a finite temperature destroys another feature of one-dimensional quantum liquids: the real space quasi-long-range order in which the spatial correlation functions exhibit power-law decay. We consider a non-equilibrium protocol where two interacting Bose gases are prepared either at different temperatures or chemical potentials and then joined. We show that the non-equilibrium steady state emerging at large times around the junction displays edge singularities in the response function and quasi-long-range order.

Probing non-thermal density fluctuations in the one-dimensional Bose gas

Quantum integrable models display a rich variety of non-thermal excited states with unusual properties. The most common way to probe them is by performing a quantum quench, i.e., by letting a many-body initial state unitarily evolve with an integrable Hamiltonian. At late times, these systems are locally described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble with as many effective temperatures as their local conserved quantities. The experimental measurement of this macroscopic number of temperatures remains elusive. Here we show that they can be obtained by probing the dynamical structure factor of the system after the quench and by employing a generalized fluctuation-dissipation theorem that we provide. Our procedure allows us to completely reconstruct the stationary state of a quantum integrable system from state-of-the-art experimental observations.

Exact correlations in the Lieb-Liniger model and detailed balance out-of-equilibrium

We study the density-density correlation function of the 1D Lieb-Liniger model and obtain an exact expression for the small momentum limit of the static correlator in the thermodynamic limit. We achieve this by summing exactly over the relevant form factors of the density operator in the small momentum limit. The result is valid for any eigenstate, including thermal and non-thermal states. We also show that the small momentum limit of the dynamic structure factors obeys a generalized detailed balance relation valid for any equilibrium state.

Density form factors of the 1D Bose gas for finite entropy states

We consider the Lieb-Liniger model for a gas of bosonic $δ-$interacting particles. Using Algebraic Bethe Ansatz results we compute the thermodynamic limit of the form factors of the density operator between finite entropy eigenstates such as finite temperature states or generic non-equilibrium highly excited states. These form factors are crucial building blocks to obtain the thermodynamic exact dynamic correlation functions of such physically relevant states. As a proof of principle we compute an approximated dynamic structure factor by including only the simplest types of particle-hole excitations and show the agreement with known results.

Finite temperature correlations in the Lieb-Liniger 1D Bose gas

We address the problem of calculating finite-temperature response functions of an experimentally relevant low-dimensional strongly-correlated system: the integrable 1D Bose gas with repulsive δ-function interaction (Lieb-Liniger model). Focusing on the observable dynamical density-density function, we present a Bethe Ansatz-based method allowing for its accurate evaluation over a broad range of momenta, frequencies, temperatures and interaction parameters, in finite but large systems. We show how thermal fluctuations smoothen the zero temperature critical behavior and present explicit quantitative results in experimentally accessible regimes.

Metastable criticality and the super Tonks-Girardeau gas

We consider a 1D Bose gas with attractive interactions in an out-of-equilibrium highly excited state containing no bound states. We show that relaxation processes in the gas are suppressed, making the system metastable on long timescales. We compute dynamical correlation functions, revealing the structure of excitations, an enhancement of umklapp correlations and new branches due to intermediate bound states. These features give a clear indication of the attractive regime and can be probed experimentally. We observe that, despite its out-of-equilibrium nature, the system displays critical behaviour: correlation functions are characterised by asymptotic power-law decay described by the Luttinger liquid framework.

Exact prefactors in static and dynamic correlation functions of 1D quantum integrable models: applications to the Calogero-Sutherland, Lieb-Liniger and XXZ models

In this article we demonstrate a recently developed technique which addresses the problem of obtaining non-universal prefactors of the correlation functions of 1D systems at zero temperature. Our approach combines the effective field theory description of generic 1D quantum liquids with the finite size scaling of form factors (matrix elements) which are obtained using microscopic techniques developed in the context of integrable models. We thus establish exact analytic forms for the prefactors of the long-distance behavior of equal time correlation functions as well as prefactors of singularities of dynamic response functions. In this article our focus is on three specific integrable models: the Calogero-Sutherland, Lieb-Liniger, and XXZ models.
