Reconstruction of Muon Bundle in the JUNO Central Detector

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment. One of the main goals is to determine the neutrino mass ordering by precisely measuring the energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos. For reactor antineutrino detection, cosmogenic backgrounds such as $^9$Li/$^8$He and fast neutrons induced by cosmic muons should be rejected carefully by applying muon veto cuts, which requires good muon track reconstruction. With a 20~kton liquid scintillator detector, simulation shows the proportion of muon bundles to be around 8\% in the JUNO, while its reconstruction is rarely discussed in previous experiments. According to the charge response of the PMT array, this paper proposes an efficient algorithm for muon bundle track reconstruction. This is the first reconstruction of muon bundles in a large volume liquid scintillator detector. Additionally, the algorithm shows good performance and potential in reconstruction for both single muon and double muons. The spatial resolution of single muon reconstruction is 20~cm and the angular resolution is $0.5^\circ$. As for double muon reconstruction, the spatial resolution and angular resolution could be 30~cm and $1.0^\circ$, respectively. Moreover, this paper has also discussed muon classification and veto strategy.

$T\bar{T}/J\bar{T}$-deformed WZW models from Chern-Simons AdS$_3$ gravity with mixed boundary conditions

In this work we consider AdS$_3$ gravitational theory with certain mixed boundary conditions at spatial infinity. Using the Chern-Simons formalism of AdS$_3$ gravity, we find that these boundary conditions lead to non-trivial boundary terms, which, in turn, produce exactly the spectrum of the $T\bar{T}/J\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs. We then follow the procedure for constructing asymptotic boundary dynamics of AdS$_3$ to derive the constrained $T\bar{T}$-deformed WZW model from Chern-Simons gravity. The resulting theory turns out to be the $T\bar{T}$-deformed Alekseev-Shatashvili action after disentangling the constraints. Furthermore, by adding a $U(1)$ gauge field associated to the current $J$, we obtain one type of the $J\bar T$-deformed WZW model, and show that its action can be constructed from the gravity side. These results provide a check on the correspondence between the $T\bar{T}/J\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs and the deformations of boundary conditions of AdS$_3$, the latter of which may be regarded as coordinate transformations.

Muon reconstruction with a convolutional neural network in the JUNO detector

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is designed to determine the neutrino mass ordering and measure neutrino oscillation parameters. A precise muon reconstruction is crucial to reduce one of the major backgrounds induced by cosmic muons. This article proposes a novel muon reconstruction method based on convolutional neural network (CNN) models. In this method, the track information reconstructed by the top tracker is used for network training. The training dataset is augmented by applying a rotation to muon tracks to compensate for the limited angular coverage of the top tracker. The muon reconstruction with the CNN model can produce unbiased tracks with performance that spatial resolution is better than 10 cm and angular resolution is better than 0.6 degrees. By using a GPU accelerated implementation a speedup factor of 100 compared to existing CPU techniques has been demonstrated.

Mass production and characterization of 3-inch PMTs for the JUNO experiment

26,000 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) have been produced for Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) by the Hainan Zhanchuang Photonics Technology Co., Ltd (HZC) company in China and passed all acceptance tests with only 15 tubes rejected. The mass production began in 2018 and elapsed for about 2 years at a rate of $\sim$1,000~PMTs per month. The characterization of the PMTs was performed in the factory concurrently with production as a joint effort between HZC and JUNO. Fifteen performance parameters were tracked at different sampling rates, and novel working strategies were implemented to improve quality assurance. This constitutes the largest sample of 3-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date.

On the symmetry of $T\bar T$ deformed CFT

We propose a symmetry of $T\bar T$ deformed 2D CFT, which preserves the trace relation. The deformed conformal killing equation is obtained. Once we consider the background metric runs with the deformation parameter $μ$, the deformation contributes an additional term in conformal killing equation, which plays the role of renormalization group flow of metric. The conformal symmetry coincides with the fixed point. On the gravity side, this deformed conformal killing equation can be described by a new boundary condition of AdS$_3$. In addition, based on the deformed conformal killing equation, we derive that the stress tensor of the deformed CFT equals to Brown-York's quasilocal stress tensor on a finite boundary with a counterterm. For a specific example, BTZ black hole, we get $T\bar T$ deformed conformal killing vectors and the associated conserved charges are also studied.

Private, Fair, and Verifiable Aggregate Statistics for Mobile Crowdsensing in Blockchain Era

In this paper, we propose FairCrowd, a private, fair, and verifiable framework for aggregate statistics in mobile crowdsensing based on the public blockchain. In specific, mobile users are incentivized to collect and share private data values (e.g., current locations) to fufill a commonly interested task released by a customer, and the crowdsensing server computes aggregate statistics over the values of mobile users (e.g., the most popular location) for the customer. By utilizing the ElGamal encryption, the server learns nearly nothing about the private data or the statistical result. The correctness of aggregate statistics can be publicly verified by using a new efficient and verifiable computation approach. Moreover, the fairness of incentive is guaranteed based on the public blockchain in the presence of greedy service provider, customers, and mobile users, who may launch payment-escaping, payment-reduction, free-riding, double-reporting, and Sybil attacks to corrupt reward distribution. Finally, FairCrowd is proved to achieve verifiable aggregate statistics with privacy preservation for mobile users. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the high efficiency of FairCrowd for aggregate statistics in mobile crowdsensing.

A quantitative approach to select PMTs for large detectors

Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used in neutrino and other experiments for the detection of weak light. To date PMTs are the most sensitive single photon detector per unit area. In addition to the quantum efficiency for photon detection, there are a number of other specifications, such as rate and amplitude of after-pulses, dark noise rate, transit time spread, radioactive background of glass, peak-to-valley ratio, etc. All affect the photon detection and hence the physics goals. In addition, cost is another major factor for large experiments. It is important to know how to properly take into account all these parameters and choose the most appropriate PMTs. In this paper, we present an approach to quantify the impact of all parameters on the physics goals, including cost and risk. This method has been successfully used in the JUNO experiment. It can be applied to other experiments with large number of PMTs.

Thermodynamics of the Bardeen Black Hole in Anti-de Sitter Space

We first study the thermodynamics of Bardeen-AdS black hole by the $T$-$r_{h}$ diagram, where T is the Hawking temperature and $r_{h}$ is the radius of event horizon. The cut-off radius which is the minimal radius of the thermodynamical stable Bardeen black hole can be got, and the cut-off radius is the same with the result of the heat capacity analysis. Moreover, by studying the parameter $g$, which is interpreted as a gravitationally collapsed magnetic monopole arising in a specific form of non-linear electrodynamics, in the Bardeen black hole, we can get a critical value $g_{m}$ and different phenomenons with different values of parameter $g$. For $g>g_{m}$, there is no second order phase transition. We also research the thermodynamical stability of the Bardeen black hole by the Gibbs free energy and the heat capacity. In addition, the phase transition is discussed.

A new method of energy reconstruction for large spherical liquid scintillator detectors

Liquid scintillators are commonly used to detect low energy neutrinos from the reactors, sun, and earth. It is a challenge to reconstruct deposited energies for a large liquid scintillator detector. For detectors with multiple optical mediums such as JUNO and SNO+, the prediction of the propagation of detected photons is extremely difficult due to mixed optical processes such as Rayleigh scattering, refraction and total reflection at their boundaries. Calibration based reconstruction methods consume impractical time since a large number of calibration points are required in a giant detector. In this paper, we propose a new model-independent method to reconstruct deposited energies with minimum requirements on the calibration system. This method is validated with JUNO's offline software. Monte Carlo studies show that the energy non-uniformity can be controlled below 1%, which is crucial for JUNO to achieve 3% energy resolution.

Thermodynamics of charged AdS black holes in rainbow gravity

In this paper, the thermodynamic property of charged AdS black holes is studied in rainbow gravity. By the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and the modified dispersion relation, we obtain deformed temperature. Moreover, in rainbow gravity we calculate the heat capacity in a fixed charge and discuss the thermal stability. We also obtain a similar behaviour with the liquid-gas system in extending phase space (including \(P\) and \(r\)) and study its critical behavior with the pressure given by the cosmological constant and with a fixed black hole charge \(Q\). Furthermore, we study the Gibbs function and find its characteristic swallow tail behavior, which indicates the phase transition. We also find there is a special value about the mass of test particle which would lead the black hole to zero temperature and a diverging heat capacity with a fixed charge.

A vertex reconstruction algorithm in the central detector of JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is designed to study neutrino mass hierarchy and measure three of the neutrino oscillation parameters with high precision using reactor antineutrinos. It is also able to study many other physical phenomena, including supernova neutrinos, solar neutrinos, geo-neutrinos, atmosphere neutrinos, and so forth. The central detector of JUNO contains 20,000~tons of liquid scintillator (LS) and about 18,000 20-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), which is the largest liquid scintillator one under construction in the world up today. The energy resolution is expected to be 3\%/$\sqrt{E(MeV)}$. To meet the requirements of the experiment, an algorithm of vertex reconstruction, which takes into account time and charge information of PMTs, has been developed by deploying the maximum likelihood method and well understanding the complicated optical processes in the liquid scintillator.

Muon Tracking with the fastest light in the JUNO Central Detector

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment designed to measure the neutrino mass hierarchy using a central detector (CD), which contains 20 kton liquid scintillator (LS) surrounded by about 18,000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), located 700~m underground. The rate of cosmic muons reaching the JUNO detector is about 3~Hz and the muon induced neutrons and isotopes are major backgrounds for the neutrino detection. Reconstruction of the muon trajectory in the detector is crucial for the study and rejection of those backgrounds. This paper will introduce the muon tracking algorithm in the JUNO CD, with a least squares method of PMTs' first hit time (FHT). Correction of the FHT for each PMT was found to be important to reduce the reconstruction bias. The spatial resolution and angular resolution are better than 3~cm and 0.4~degree, respectively, and the tracking efficiency is greater than 90\% up to 16~m far from the detector center.

Discussion of a possible corrected black hole entropy

Einstein's equation could be interpreted as the first law of thermodynamic near the spherically symmetric horizon. Through recalling the Einstein gravity with a more general static spherical symmetric metric, we find that the entropy would have a correction in Einstein gravity. By using this method, we investigate the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) gravity. Without matter field, we can also derive the first law in EiBI gravity. With an electromagnetic field, as the field equations have a more general spherically symmetric solution in EiBI gravity, we find that correction of the entropy could be generalized to EiBI gravity. Furthermore, we point out that the Einstein gravity and EiBI gravity might be equivalent on the event horizon. At last, under EiBI gravity with the electromagnetic field, a specific corrected entropy of black hole is given.

Conformal transformation route to gravity's rainbow

Conformal transformation as a mathematical tool has been used in many areas of gravitational physics. In this paper, we would consider the gravity's rainbow, in which the metric could be treated as a conformal rescaling of the original metric. By using the conformal transformation technique, we get a specific form of modified Newton's constant and cosmological constant in gravity's rainbow, which implies that the total vacuum energy is dependent on probe energy. Moreover, the result shows that the Einstein gravity's rainbow could be described by an energy-dependent $f(E,\tilde R)$ gravity. At last, we study the $f(R)$ gravity, when the gravity's rainbow is considered, it can also be described as another energy-dependent $\tilde f(E,\tilde R)$ gravity.

Hawking radiation-quasinormal modes correspondence for large AdS black holes

It is well-known that the non-strictly thermal character of the Hawking radiation spectrum generates a natural correspondence between Hawking radiation and black hole quasinormal modes. This main issue has been analyzed in the framework of Schwarzschild black holes, Kerr black holes and nonextremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes. In this paper, by introducing the effective temperature, we reanalysis the non-strictly thermal character of large AdS black holes. The results show that the effective mass corresponding to the effective temperature is approximatively the average one in any dimension. And the other effective quantities can also be obtained. Based on the known forms of frequency in quasinormal modes, we reanalysis the asymptotic frequencies of the large AdS black hole in three and five dimensions. Then we get the formulas of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the horizon's area quantization with functions of the quantum "overtone" number $n$.

Double Calorimetry System in JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multipurpose neutrino-oscillation experiment, with a 20 kiloton liquid scintillator detector of unprecedented 3\% energy resolution (at 1 MeV) at 700-meter deep underground. There are ~18,000 20-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in the central detector with an optical coverage greater than 75%. Control of the systematics of the energy response is crucial to archive the designed energy resolution as well as to reach 1% precision of the absolute energy scale. The detected number of photoelectrons in each PMT differs by two orders of magnitude in the reactor antineutrino energy range in such a large detector, which is a challenge to the single channel charge measurement. JUNO has approved a new small-PMT system, including 25,000 3-inch PMTs, installed alternately with 20-inch PMTs. The individual 3-inch PMT receives mostly single photoelectrons, which provides a unique way to calibrate the energy response of the 20-inch PMT system by a photon-counting technology. Besides, the small-PMT system naturally extends the dynamic range of the energy measurement to help the high-energy physics, such as cosmic muons and atmospheric neutrinos. We will present the physics concept of this double calorimetry, the design and implementation of the 3-inch PMT and its readout electronics system.

The generalization of charged AdS black hole specific volume and number density

In this paper, by proposing a generalized $specific~volume$, we restudy the $P-V$ criticality of charged AdS black holes in the extended phase space. The results show that most of the previous conclusions can be generalized without change, but the ratio $\tildeρ_c$ should be $3 \tildeα/16$ in general case. Further research on the thermodynamical phase transition of black hole leads us to a natural interpretation of our assumption, and more black hole properties can be generalized. Finally, we study the number density for charged AdS black hole in higher dimensions, the results show the necessity of our assumption.

Theoretical studies on the impact of point defect on the structures of different uranium silicides

The structures, point defects and impacts of fission products for U3Si (\b{eta}-U3Si and γ-U3Si) and USi2 (α-USi2 and \b{eta}-USi2) are studied by first-principles calculations. The lattice parameters of U3Si and USi2 are calculated and the stability of different types of point defects is predicted by their formation energies. The results show that silicon vacancies are more prone to be produced than uranium vacancies in \b{eta}-USi2 matrix, while uranium vacancies are the most stable defects of other three types of crystallographic structures. The most favorable sites of fission products (strontium, barium, cerium and neodymium) are determined in this work as well. By calculating incorporation energies of fission products, we demonstrate that the uranium site is the most favored for all the fissions products. Comparing the structural changes influenced by different fission products, it is also found that the highest volume change is caused by barium interstitials. According to the current data, rare earth elements cerium and neodymium are found to be more stable than alkaline earth metals strontium and barium in a given nuclear matrix. Finally, it is also determined that in USi2 crystal lattice fission products tend to be stabilized in uranium substitution sites, while they are likely to form precipitates from the U3Si matrix. It is expected that this work may provide new insight into the mechanism for structural evolutions of silicide nuclear fuels in a reactor.
