Sharp density discrepancy for cut and project sets: An approach via lattice point counting

Cut and project sets are obtained by taking an irrational slice of a lattice and projecting it to a lower dimensional subspace, and are fully characterised by the shape of the slice (window) and the choice of the lattice. In this context we seek to quantify fluctuations from the asymptotics for point counts. We obtain uniform upper bounds on the discrepancy depending on the diophantine properties of the lattice as well as universal lower bounds on the average of the discrepancy. In an appendix, Michael Björklund and Tobias Hartnick obtain lower bounds on the $L^2$-norm of the discrepancy also depending on the diophantine class; these lower bounds match our uniform upper bounds and both are therefore sharp. Using the sufficient criteria of Burago--Kleiner and Aliste-Prieto--Coronel--Gambaudo we find an explicit full-measure class of cut and project sets that are biLipschitz equivalent to lattices; the lower bounds on the variance indicate that this is the largest class of cut and project sets for which those sufficient criteria can apply.

Hyperuniformity of random measures on Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces

We investigate lower asymptotic bounds of number variances for invariant locally square-integrable random measures on Euclidean and real hyperbolic spaces. In the Euclidean case we show that there are subsequences of radii for which the number variance grows at least as fast as the volume of the boundary of Euclidean balls, generalizing a classical result of Beck. With regards to real hyperbolic spaces we prove that random measures are never geometrically hyperuniform and if the random measure admits non-trivial complementary series diffraction, then it is hyperfluctuating. Moreover, we define spectral hyperuniformity and stealth of random measures on real hyperbolic spaces in terms of vanishing of the complementary series diffraction and sub-Poissonian decay of the principal series diffraction around the Harish-Chandra $Ξ$-function.

Simplices in large sets and directional expansion in ergodic actions

In this paper we study ergodic $\mathbb{Z}^r$-actions and investigate expansion properties along cyclic subgroups. We show that under some spectral conditions there are always directions which expand significantly a given measurable set with positive measure. Among other things, we use this result to prove that the set of volumes of all $r$-simplices with vertices in a set with positive upper density must contain an infinite arithmetic progression, thus showing a discrete density analogue of a classical result by Graham.

Dynamics on spaces of quasimorphisms and applications to approximate lattice theory

We study the dynamics of countable groups on their respective spaces of quasimorphisms. For cohomologically non-trivial quasimorphisms we show that there are no invariant measures and classify stationary measures. Within the equivalence class of any given quasimorphism we find both uniquely stationary orbit closures which are in fact boundaries and orbit closures with uncountably many ergodic stationary probability measures. We apply these results to study hulls of uniform approximate lattices which arise from twists by quasimorphisms. We show that these hulls do not admit invariant probability measures (extending results by Machado and Hrushovski) and classify stationary probability measures on these hulls.

A uniform metrical theorem in multiplicative Diophantine approximation

For Lebesgue generic $(x_1,x_2)\in \mathbb{R}^2$, we investigate the distribution of small values of products $q\cdot \|qx_1\| \cdot \|qx_2\|$ with $q\in\mathbb{N}$, where $\|\cdot \|$ denotes the distance to the closest integer. The main result gives an asymptotic formula for the number of $1\le q\le T$ such that $$ a_T <q\cdot \|qx_1\| \cdot \|qx_2\|\leq b_T \quad \textrm{and} \quad \|qx_1\|, \|qx_2\|\leq c_T $$ for given sequences $a_T,b_T, c_T$ satisfying certain growth conditions.

Decorrelation estimates for translated measures under diagonal flows

A profound link between Homogeneous Dynamics and Diophantine Approximation is based on an observation that Diophantine properties of a real matrix $B$ are encoded by the corresponding lattice $Λ_B$ translated by a multi-parameter semigroup $a(t)$. We establish quantitative decorrelation estimates for measures supported on leaves $a(t)Λ_B$ with the error terms depending only on the minimum of the pairwise distances between the parameters. The proof involves a careful analysis of the translated measures in the products of the spaces of unimodular lattices and establishes quantitative equidistributions to measures supported on various intermediate homogeneous subspaces.

Hyperuniformity and non-hyperuniformity of quasicrystals

We develop a general framework to study hyperuniformity of various mathematical models of quasicrystals. Using this framework we provide examples of non-hyperuniform quasicrystals which unlike previous examples are not limit-quasiperiodic. Some of these examples are even anti-hyperuniform or have a positive asymptotic number variance. On the other hand we establish hyperuniformity for a large class of mathematical quasicrystals in Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension. For certain models of quasicrystals we moreover establish that hyperuniformity holds for a generic choice of the underlying parameters. For quasicrystals arising from the cut-and-project method we conclude that their hyperuniformity depends on subtle diophantine properties of the underlying lattice and window and is by no means automatic.

Poisson approximation and Weibull asymptotics in the geometry of numbers

Minkowski's First Theorem and Dirichlet's Approximation Theorem provide upper bounds on certain minima taken over lattice points contained in domains of Euclidean spaces. We study the distribution of such minima and show, under some technical conditions, that they exhibit Weibull asymptotics with respect to different natural measures on the space of unimodular lattices in $\bR^d$. This follows from very general Poisson approximation results for shrinking targets which should be of independent interest. Furthermore, we show in the appendix that the logarithm laws of Kleinbock-Margulis, Khinchin and Gallagher can be deduced from our distributional results.

Intersection spaces and multiple transverse recurrence

We study multiple recurrence properties along separated cross sections for pmp actions of unimodular lcsc group on Polish spaces. We establish a multiple transverse recurrence theorem under the assumption that sufficiently large powers of the return time set are Delone sets. Typical examples of such situations arise from the theory of uniform approximate lattices.

Effective multiple equidistribution of translated measures

We study the joint distributions of translated measures supported on leaves which are expanded by subgroups of diagonal matrices and generalize previous results of Kleinbock--Margulis, Dabbs--Kelly--Li, and Shi. More specifically, we establish quantitative estimates on higher-order correlations for measures with low regularities and derive error terms which only depend on the distances between translations.

Counting in generic lattices and higher rank actions

We consider the problem of counting lattice points contained in domains in $\mathbb{R}^d$ defined by products of linear forms and we show that the normalized discrepancies in these counting problems satisfy non-degenerate Central Limit Theorems, provided that $d \geq 9$. We also study more refined versions pertaining to "spiraling of approximations". Our techniques are dynamical in nature and exploit effective exponential mixing of all orders for actions of higher-rank abelian groups on the space of unimodular lattices.

Ergodicity and type of nonsingular Bernoulli actions

We determine the Krieger type of nonsingular Bernoulli actions $G \curvearrowright \prod_{g \in G} (\{0,1\},μ_g)$. When $G$ is abelian, we do this for arbitrary marginal measures $μ_g$. We prove in particular that the action is never of type II$_\infty$ if $G$ is abelian and not locally finite, answering Krengel's question for $G = \mathbb{Z}$. When $G$ is locally finite, we prove that type II$_\infty$ does arise. For arbitrary countable groups, we assume that the marginal measures stay away from $0$ and $1$. When $G$ has only one end, we prove that the Krieger type is always I, II$_1$ or III$_1$. When $G$ has more than one end, we show that other types always arise. Finally, we solve the conjecture of [VW17] by proving that a group $G$ admits a Bernoulli action of type III$_1$ if and only if $G$ has nontrivial first $L^2$-cohomology.

Random walks on dense subgroups of locally compact groups

Let $Γ$ be a countable discrete group, $H$ a lcsc totally disconnected group and $ρ: Γ\rightarrow H$ a homomorphism with dense image. We develop a general and explicit technique which provides, for every compact open subgroup $L < H$ and bi-$L$-invariant probability measure $θ$ on $H$, a Furstenberg discretization $τ$ of $θ$ such that the Poisson boundary of $(H,θ)$ is a $τ$-boundary. Among other things, this technique allows us to construct examples of finitely supported random walks on certain lamplighter groups and solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups, whose Poisson boundaries are prime, but not $L^p$-irreducible for any $p \geq 1$, answering a conjecture of Bader-Muchnik in the negative. Furthermore, we give an example of a countable discrete group $Γ$ and two spread-out probability measures $τ_1$ and $τ_2$ on $Γ$ such that the boundary entropy spectrum of $(Γ,τ_1)$ is an interval, while the boundary entropy spectrum of $(Γ,τ_2)$ is a Cantor set.

Kudo-Continuity Of Entropy Functionals

We study in this paper real-valued functions on the space of all sub-$σ$-algebras of a probability measure space, and introduce the notion of Kudo-continuity, which is an a priori strengthening of continuity with respect to strong convergence. We show that a large class of entropy functionals are Kudo-continuous. On the way, we establish upper and lower continuity of various entropy functions with respect to asymptotic second order stochastic domination, which should be of independent interest. An application to the study of entropy spectra of $μ$-boundaries associated to random walks on locally compact groups is given.

Aperiodic order and spherical diffraction, II: Translation bounded measures on homogeneous spaces

We study the auto-correlation measures of invariant random point processes in the hyperbolic plane which arise from various classes of aperiodic Delone sets. More generally, we study auto-correlation measures for large classes of Delone sets in (and even translation bounded measures on) arbitrary locally compact homogeneous metric spaces. We then specialize to the case of weighted model sets, in which we are able to derive more concrete formulas for the auto-correlation. In the case of Riemannian symmetric spaces we also explain how the auto-correlation of a weighted model set in a Riemannian symmetric space can be identified with a (typically non-tempered) positive-definite distribution on $\mathbb R^n$. This paves the way for a diffraction theory for such model sets, which will be discussed in the sequel to the present article.

Aperiodic order and spherical diffraction, III: The shadow transform and the diffraction formula

We define spherical diffraction measures for a wide class of weighted point sets in commutative spaces, i.e. proper homogeneous spaces associated with Gelfand pairs. In the case of the hyperbolic plane we can interpret the spherical diffraction measure as the Mellin transform of the auto-correlation distribution. We show that uniform regular model sets in commutative spaces have a pure point spherical diffraction measure. The atoms of this measure are located at the spherical automorphic spectrum of the underlying lattice, and the diffraction coefficients can be characterized abstractly in terms of the so-called shadow transform of the characteristic functions of the window. In the case of the Heisenberg group we can give explicit formulas for these diffraction coefficients in terms of Bessel and Laguerre functions.

Sets of transfer times with small densities

We consider in this paper the set of transfer times between two measurable subsets of positive measures in an ergodic probability measure-preserving system of a countable abelian group. If the lower asymptotic density of the transfer times is small, then we prove this set must be either periodic or Sturmian. Our results can be viewed as ergodic-theoretical extensions of some classical sumset theorems in compact abelian groups due to Kneser. Our proofs are based on a correspondence principle for action sets which was developed previously by the first two authors.

Analytic properties of approximate lattices

We introduce a notion of cocycle-induction for strong uniform approximate lattices in locally compact second countable groups and use it to relate (relative) Kazhdan- and Haagerup-type of approximate lattices to the corresponding properties of the ambient locally compact groups. Our approach applies to large classes of uniform approximate lattices (though not all of them) and is flexible enough to cover the $L^p$-versions of Property (FH) and a-(FH)-menability as well as quasified versions thereof a la Burger--Monod and Ozawa.
