Approximate invariance for ergodic actions of amenable groups

We develop in this paper some general techniques to analyze action sets of small doubling for probability measure-preserving actions of amenable groups. As an application of these techniques, we prove a dynamical generalization of Kneser's celebrated density theorem for subsets in $(\bZ,+)$, valid for any countable amenable group, and we show how it can be used to establish a plethora of new inverse product set theorems for upper and lower asymptotic densities. We provide several examples demonstrating that our results are optimal for the settings under study.

Borel density for approximate lattices

We extend classical density theorems of Borel and Dani--Shalom on lattices in semisimple, respectively solvable algebraic groups over local fields to approximate lattices. Our proofs are based on the observation that Zariski closures of approximate subgroups are close to algebraic subgroups. Our main tools are stationary joinings between the hull dynamical systems of discrete approximate subgroups and their Zariski closures.

Spectral theory of approximate lattices in nilpotent Lie groups

We show that an approximate lattice in a nilpotent Lie group admits a relatively dense subset of central $(1-ε)$-Bragg peaks for every $ε> 0$. For the Heisenberg group we deduce that the union of horizontal and vertical $(1-ε)$-Bragg peaks is relatively dense in the unitary dual. More generally we study uniform approximate lattices in extensions of lcsc groups. We obtain necesary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a continuous horizontal factor of the associated hull-dynamical system, and study the spectral theory of the hull-dynamical system relative to this horizontal factor.

Central Limit Theorems for Diophantine approximants

In this paper we study counting functions representing the number of solutions of systems of linear inequalities which arise in the theory of Diophantine approximation. We develop a method that allows us to explain the random-like behavior that these functions exhibit and prove a Central Limit Theorem for them. Our approach is based on a quantitative study of higher-order correlations for functions defined on the space of lattices and a novel technique for estimating cumulants of Siegel transforms.

Bohr sets in triple products of large sets in amenable groups

We answer a question of Hegyvári and Ruzsa concerning effective estimates of the Bohr-regularity of certain triple sums of sets with positive upper Banach densities in the integers. Our proof also works for any discrete amenable group, and it does not require all addends in the triple products we consider to have positive (left) upper Banach densities; one of the addends is allowed to only have positive upper asymptotic density with respect to a (possibly very sparse) ergodic sequence.

Quantitative multiple mixing

We develop a method for providing quantitative estimates for higher order correlations of group actions. In particular, we establish effective mixing of all orders for actions of semisimple Lie groups as well as semisimple $S$-algebraic groups and semisimple adele groups. As an application, we deduce existence of approximate configurations in lattices of semisimple groups.

Central limit theorems in the geometry of numbers

We investigate in this paper the distribution of the discrepancy of various lattice counting functions. In particular, we prove that the number of lattice points contained in certain domains defined by products of linear forms satisfies a Central Limit Theorem. Furthermore, we show that the Central Limit Theorem holds for the number of rational approximants for weighted Diophantine approximation in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our arguments exploit chaotic properties of the Cartan flow on the space of lattices.

Central Limit Theorems for group actions which are exponentially mixing of all orders

In this paper we establish a general dynamical Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for group actions which are exponentially mixing of all orders. In particular, the main result applies to Cartan flows on finite-volume quotients of simple Lie groups. Our proof uses a novel relativization of the classical method of cumulants, which should be of independent interest. As a sample application of our techniques, we show that the CLT holds along lacunary samples of the horocycle flow on finite-area hyperbolic surfaces applied to any smooth compactly supported function.

Aperiodic order and spherical diffraction, I: Auto-correlation of model sets

We study uniform and non-uniform model sets in arbitrary locally compact second countable (lcsc) groups, which provide a natural generalization of uniform model sets in locally compact abelian groups as defined by Meyer and used as mathematical models of quasi-crystals. We then define a notion of auto-correlation for subsets of finite local complexitiy in arbitrary lcsc groups, which generalizes Hof's classical definition beyond the class of amenable groups, and provide a formula for the auto-correlation of a regular model set. Along the way we show that the punctured hull of an arbitrary regular model set admits a unique invariant probability measure, even in the case where the punctured hull is non-compact and the group is non-amenable. In fact this measure is also the unique stationary measure with respect to any admissible probability measure.

Approximate lattices

In this article we introduce and study uniform and non-uniform approximate lattices in locally compact second countable (lcsc) groups. These are approximate subgroups (in the sense of Tao) which simultaneously generalize lattices in lcsc group and mathematical quasi-crystals (a.k.a. Meyer sets) in lcsc abelian groups. We show that envelopes of strong approximate lattices are unimodular, and that approximate lattices in nilpotent groups are uniform. We also establish several results relating properties of approximate lattices and their envelopes. For example, we prove a version of the Milnor-Schwarz lemma for uniform approximate lattices in compactly-generated lcsc groups, which we then use to relate metric amenability of uniform approximate lattices to amenability of the envelope. Finally we extend a theorem of Kleiner and Leeb to show that the isometry groups of higher rank symmetric spaces of non-compact type are QI rigid with respect to finitely-generated approximate groups.

Small product sets in compact groups

We show in this paper that a sub-critical pair $(A,B)$ of sufficiently "spread-out" Borel sets in a compact and second countable group $K$ with an \emph{abelian} identity component, must reduce to a Sturmian pair in either $\bT$ or $\bT \rtimes \{-1,1\}$. This extends a classical result of Kneser.

Product set phenomena for measured groups

Following the works of Furstenberg and Glasner on stationary means, we strengthen and extend in this paper some recent results by Di Nasso, Goldbring, Jin, Leth, Lupini and Mahlburg on piecewise syndeticity of product sets in countable \textsc{amenable} groups to general countable measured groups. We point out several fundamental differences between the behavior of products of "large" sets in Liouville and non-Liouville measured groups. As a (very) special case of our main results, we show that if $G$ is a free group of finite rank, and $A$ and $B$ are "spherically large" subsets of $G$, then there exists a finite set $F \subset G$ such that $AFB$ is thick. The position of the set $F$ is curious, but seems to be necessary; in fact, we can produce \emph{left thick} sets $A, B \subset G$ such that $B$ is "spherically large", but $AB$ is \emph{not} piecewise syndetic. On the other hand, if $A$ is spherically large, then $AA^{-1}$ is always piecewise syndetic \emph{and} left piecewise syndetic. However, contrary to what happens for amenable groups, $AA^{-1}$ may fail to be syndetic. The same phenomena occur for many other (even amenable, but non-Liouville) measured groups. Our proofs are based on some ergodic-theoretical results concerning stationary actions which should be of independent interest.

Random Walks on countable groups

We begin by giving a new proof of the equivalence between the Liouville property and vanishing of the drift for symmetric random walks with finite first moments on finitely generated groups; a result which was first established by Kaimanovich-Vershik and Karlsson-Ledrappier. We then proceed to prove that the product of the Poisson boundary of any countable measured group $(G,μ)$ with any ergodic $(G,\checkμ)$-space is still ergodic, which in particular yields a new proof of weak mixing for the double Poisson boundary of $(G,μ)$ when $μ$ is symmetric. Finally, we characterize the failure of weak-mixing for an ergodic $(G,μ)$-space as the existence of a non-trivial measure-preserving isometric factor.

Twisted patterns in large subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^N$

Let $E \subset \mathbb{Z}^N$ be a set of positive upper Banach density and let $Γ< \operatorname{GL}_N(\mathbb{Z})$ be a finitely generated, strongly irreducible subgroup whose Zariski closure in $\operatorname{GL}_N(\mathbb{R})$ is a Zariski connected semisimple group with no compact factors. Let $Y$ be any set and suppose that $Ψ: \mathbb{Z}^N \rightarrow Y$ is a $Γ$-invariant function. We prove that for every positive integer $m$, there exists a positive integer $k$ with the property that for every finite set $F \subset \mathbb{Z}^N$ with $|F| = m$, we have \[ Ψ(kF) \subset Ψ(E-b) \quad \textrm{for some $b \in E$}. \] Furthermore, if $E$ is an aperiodic Bohr$_o$-set, we can choose $k = 1$ and $b = 0$. As one of many applications of this result, we show that if $E_o \subset \mathbb{Z}$ has positive upper Banach density, then, for any integer $m$, there exists an integer $k$ with the property for \emph{every} finite set $F \subset \mathbb{Z}$, we can find $x,y,z \in E_o$ such that \[ k^2 F \subset \big\{ (u-x)^2 + (v-y)^2 - (w-z)^2 \, : \, u,v,w \in E_o \big\}. \] In particular, if $E_o \subset \mathbb{Z}$ is an aperiodic Bohr$_o$-set, then every integer can be written on the form $u^2 + v^2 - w^2$ for some $u,v,w \in E_o$. Our techniques use recent results by Benoist-Quint and Bourgain-Furman-Lindenstrauss-Mozes on equidistribution of random walks on automorphism groups of tori.

Quasi-state Rigidity for Finite-dimensional Lie Algebras

We say that a Lie algebra $\gfr$ is quasi-state rigid if every Ad-invariant continuous Lie quasi-state on it is the directional derivative of a homogeneous quasimorphism. Extending work of Entov and Polterovich, we show that every reductive Lie algebra, as well as the algebras $\C^n \rtimes Ł{u}(n)$, $n \geq 1$, are rigid. On the other hand, a Lie algebra which surjects onto the three-dimensional Heisenberg algebra is not rigid. For Lie algebras of dimension $\leq 3$ and for solvable Lie algebras which split over a codimension one abelian ideal, we show that this is the only obstruction to rigidity.

Characteristic Polynomial Patterns in Difference Sets of Matrices

We show that for every subset $E$ of positive density in the set of integer square-matrices with zero traces, there exists an integer $k \geq 1$ such that the set of characteristic polynomials of matrices in $E-E$ contains the set of \emph{all} characteristic polynomials of integer matrices with zero traces and entries divisible by $k$. Our theorem is derived from results by Benoist-Quint on measure rigidity for actions on homogeneous spaces.

Ergodic Theorems for coset spaces

We study in this paper the validity of the mean ergodic theorem along \emph{left} Følner sequences in a countable amenable group $G$. Although the \emph{weak} ergodic theorem always holds along \emph{any} left Følner sequence in $G$, we provide examples where the \emph{mean} ergodic theorem fails in quite dramatic ways. On the other hand, if $G$ does not admit any ICC quotients, e.g. if $G$ is virtually nilpotent, then we prove that the mean ergodic theorem does indeed hold along \emph{any} left Følner sequence. In the case when a unitary representation of a countable amenable group is induced from a unitary representation of a "sufficiently thin" subgroup, we prove that the mean ergodic theorem holds along any left Følner sequence for this representation. Furthermore, we show that every countable (infinite) amenable group $L$ embeds into a countable group $G$ which admits a unitary representation with the property that for any left Følner sequence $(F_n)$ in $L$, there exists a sequence $(s_n)$ in $G$ such that the mean (but \emph{not} the weak) ergodic theorem fails for this representation along the sequence $(F_n s_n)$. Finally, we provide examples of countable (not necessarily amenable) groups $G$ with proper, infinite-index subgroups $H$, so that the \emph{pointwise} ergodic theorem holds for averages along \emph{any} strictly increasing and nested sequence of finite subsets of the coset $G/H$.
