Evaluation protocol for revealing magnonic contrast in STXM-FMR measurements

We present a statistically motivated method to extract magnonic contrast from STXM-FMR measurement with microwave frequencies of the order of \unit[10]{GHz}. With this method it is possible to generate phase and amplitude profiles with a spatial resolution of about \unit[30]{nm} given by the STXM resolution, furthermore this method allows fo a rigoros transformation to reciprocal \vec{k}-space, revealing \vec{k}-dependent magnon properties.

Micromagnetic Simulations for Coercivity Improvement through Nano-Structuring of Rare-Earth Free L1$_0$-FeNi Magnets

In this work we investigate the potential of tetragonal L1$_0$ ordered FeNi as candidate phase for rare earth free permanent magnets taking into account anisotropy values from recently synthesized, partially ordered FeNi thin films. In particular, we estimate the maximum energy product ($BH$)$_\mathrm{max}$ of L1$_0$-FeNi nanostructures using micromagnetic simulations. The maximum energy product is limited due to the small coercive field of partially ordered L1$_0$-FeNi. Nano-structured magnets consisting of 128 equi-axed, platelet-like and columnar-shaped grains show a theoretical maximum energy product of 228 kJ/m$^3$, 208 kJ/m$^3$, 252 kJ/m$^3$, respectively.

A unified description of collective magnetic excitations

In this work, we define a set of analytic tools to describe the dynamic response of the magnetization to small perturbations, which can be used on its own or in combination with micromagnetic simulations and does not require saturation. We present a general analytic description of the ferromagnetic high frequency susceptibility tensor to describe angular as well as frequency dependent ferromagnetic resonance spectra and account for asymmetries in the line shape. Furthermore, we expand this model to reciprocal space and show how it describes the magnon dispersion. Finally we suggest a trajectory dependent solving tool to describe the equilibrium states of the magnetization.

The Unusual Nature of Confined Modes in a Chiral System

Nonreciprocity of spin wave propagation is a well-known consequence of antisymmetric exchange contributions possible in magnetic spin systems that lack inversion symmetry. In this case, it is possible for the energy of a state to depend on the sign of its momentum as ω(k) ${\neq}$ ω(-k). We discuss here the consequences of this nonreciprocity on counterpropagating travelling spin wave states. In a confined geometry we find states with well-defined nodes but with amplitudes that are modulated such that inversion symmetry of the mode profile is lost. This feature leads to the suggestion that additional features may become visible in, for example, ferromagnetic resonance studies of ferromagnetic micro-elements with DMI, allowing a quantification of the amplitude and direction of the DMI. Moreover, this interference between nonreciprocal modes forms the basis for a generalized concept of mode confinement.

Mastering hysteresis in magnetocaloric materials

Hysteresis is more than just an interesting oddity, which occurs in materials with a first-order transition. It is a real obstacle on the path from existing lab-scale prototypes of magnetic refrigerators towards commercialization of this potentially disruptive cooling technology. Indeed, the reversibility of the magnetocaloric effect, being essential for magnetic heat pumps, strongly depends on the width of the thermal hysteresis and therefore it is necessary to understand the mechanisms causing hysteresis and to find solutions how to minimize losses associated with thermal hysteresis in order to maximize the efficiency of magnetic cooling devices. In this work, we discuss fundamental aspects, which can contribute to thermal hysteresis and we are developing strategies for at least partially overcoming the hysteresis problem in some selected classes of magnetocaloric materials with large application potential. Doing so, we refer to the most relevant classes of magnetic refrigerants La-Fe-Si-, Heusler- and Fe2P-type compounds.

Enhanced and Tunable Spin-Orbit Coupling in Tetragonally Strained Fe-Co-B Films

We have synthesized 20 nm thick films of tetragonally strained interstitial Fe-Co-B alloys epitaxially grown on Au55Cu45 buffer layer. The strained axis is perpendicular to the film plane and the corresponding lattice constant c is enlarged with respect to the in-plane lattice parameter a. By adding the interstitial boron with different concentrations 0, 4, and 10 at.% we were able to stabilize the tetragonal strain in 20 nm Fe-Co films with different c/a ratios of 1.013, 1.034 and 1.02, respectively. Using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) we found that the orbital magnetic moment increases with increasing the c/a ratio, pointing towards the enhancement of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) at larger strain. Our results show that careful doping of ferromagnetic films allows to control the SOC by stabilizing anisotropic strain states. These findings are applicable in material design for spintronics applications. We also discuss the influence of B doping on the Fe-Co film microstructure, its magnetic properties and magnetic relaxation.
