Strongly interacting photons in hollow-core waveguides

Hollow-core photonic-crystal waveguides filled with cold atoms can support giant optical nonlinearities through nondispersive propagation of light tightly confined in the transverse direction. Here we explore electromagnetically induced transparency is such structures, considering a pair of counter-propagating weak quantum fields in the medium of coherently driven atoms in the ladder configuration. Strong dipole--dipole interactions between optically excited, polarized Rydberg states of the atoms translate into a large dispersive interaction between the two fields. This can be used to attain a spatially-homogeneous conditional phase shift of pi for two single-photon pulses, realizing a deterministic photonic phase gate, or to implement a quantum nondemolition measurement of the photon number in the signal pulse by a coherent probe, thereby achieving a heralded source of single or few photon pulses.

Photonic Phase Gate via an Exchange of Fermionic Spin Waves in a Spin Chain

We propose a new protocol for implementing the two-qubit photonic phase gate. In our approach, the pi phase is acquired by mapping two single photons into atomic excitations with fermionic character and exchanging their positions. The fermionic excitations are realized as spin waves in a spin chain, while photon storage techniques provide the interface between the photons and the spin waves. Possible imperfections and experimental systems suitable for implementing the gate are discussed.

Fermionisation dynamics of a strongly interacting 1D Bose gas after an interaction quench

We study the dynamics of a one-dimensional Bose gas after a sudden change of the interaction strength from zero to a finite value using the numerical time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm. It is shown that despite the integrability of the system, local quantities such as the two-particle correlation $g^{(2)}(x,x)$ attain steady state values in a short characteristic time inversely proportional to the Tonks parameter $γ$ and the square of the density. The asymptotic values are very close to those of a finite temperature grand canonical ensemble with a local temperature corresponding to initial energy and density. Non-local density-density correlations on the other hand approach a steady state on a much larger time scale determined by the finite propagation velocity of oscillatory correlation waves.

Dynamics of pair correlations in the attractive Lieb-Liniger gas

We investigate the dynamics of a 1D Bose gas after a quench from the Tonks-Girardeau regime to the regime of strong attractive interactions applying analytical techniques and exact numerical simulations. After the quench the system is found to be predominantly in an excited gas-like state, the so-called super-Tonks gas, however with a small coherent admixture of two-particle bound states. Despite its small amplitude, the latter component leads to a rather pronounced oscillation of the local density-density correlation with a frequency corresponding to the binding energy of the pair, making two-particle bound states observable in an experiment. Contributions from bound states with larger particle numbers are found to be negligible.

Photon-number selective group delay in cavity induced transparency

We show that the group velocity of a probe pulse in an ensemble of $Λ$-type atoms driven by a quantized cavity mode depends on the quantum state of the input probe pulse. In the strong-coupling regime of the atom-cavity system the probe group delay is photon number selective. This can be used to spatially separate the single photon from higher photon-number components of a few-photon probe pulse and thus to create a deterministic single-photon source.

Discretized vs. continuous models of p-wave interacting fermions in 1D

We present a general mapping between continuous and lattice models of Bose- and Fermi-gases in one dimension, interacting via local two-body interactions. For s-wave interacting bosons we arrive at the Bose-Hubbard model in the weakly interacting, low density regime. The dual problem of p-wave interacting fermions is mapped to the spin-1/2 XXZ model close to the critical point in the highly polarized regime. The mappings are shown to be optimal in the sense that they produce the least error possible for a given discretization length. As an application we examine the ground state of a interacting Fermi gas in a harmonic trap, calculating numerically real-space and momentum-space distributions as well as two-particle correlations. In the analytically known limits the convergence of the results of the lattice model to the continuous one is shown.

Frequency matching in light storage spectroscopy of atomic Raman transitions

We investigate the storage of light in an atomic sample with a lambda-type coupling scheme driven by optical fields at variable two-photon detuning. In the presence of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), light is stored and retrieved from the sample by dynamically varying the group velocity. It is found that for any two-photon detuning of the input light pulse within the EIT transparency window, the carrier frequency of the retrieved light pulse matches the two-photon resonance frequency with the atomic ground state transition and the control field. This effect which is not based on spectral filtering is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. It can be used for high-speed precision measurements of the two-photon resonance as employed e.g. in optical magnetometry.

Fermion mediated long-range interactions of bosons in the 1D Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model

The ground-state phase diagram of mixtures of spin polarized fermions and bosons in a 1D periodic lattice is discussed in the limit of large fermion hopping and half filling of the fermions. Numerical simulations performed with the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) show besides bosonic Mott insulating (MI), superfluid (SF), and charge density-wave phases (CDW) a novel phase with spatial separation of MI and CDW regions. We derive an effective bosonic theory which allows for a complete understanding and quantitative prediction of the bosonic phase diagram. In particular the origin of CDW phase and the MI-CDW phase separation is revealed as the interplay between fermion-induced mean-field potential and long range interaction with alternating sign.

Stationary light in cold atomic gases

We discuss stationary light created by a pair of counter-propagating control fields in Lambda-type atomic gases with electromagnetically induced transparency for the case of negligible Doppler broadening. In this case the secular approximation used in the discussion of stationary light in hot vapors is no longer valid. We discuss the quality of the effective light-trapping system and show that in contrast to previous claims it is finite even for vanishing ground-state dephasing. The dynamics of the photon loss is in general non exponential and can be faster or slower than in hot gases.

Analytic approximations to the phase diagram of the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model with application to ion chains

We discuss analytic approximations to the ground state phase diagram of the homogeneous Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard (JCH) Hamiltonian with general short-range hopping. The JCH model describes e.g. radial phonon excitations of a linear chain of ions coupled to an external laser field tuned to the red motional sideband with Coulomb mediated hopping or an array of high-$Q$ coupled cavities containing a two-level atom and photons. Specifically we consider the cases of a linear array of coupled cavities and a linear ion chain. We derive approximate analytic expressions for the boundaries between Mott-insulating and superfluid phases and give explicit expressions for the critical value of the hopping amplitude within the different approximation schemes. In the case of an array of cavities, which is represented by the standard JCH model we compare both approximations to numerical data from density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations.

Irreversible photon transfer in an ensemble of $Λ$-type atoms and photon diode

We show that a pair of quantized cavity modes interacting with a spectrally broadened ensemble of Lambda-type atoms is analogous to an ensemble of two level systems coupled to a bosonic reservoir. This provides the possibility for an irreversible photon transfer between photon modes. The density of states as well as the quantum state of the reservoir can be engineered allowing the observation of effects such as the quantum Zeno- and anti-Zeno effect, the destructive interference of decay channels and the decay in a squeezed vacuum. As a particular application we discuss a photon diode, i.e. a device which directs a single photon from anyone of two input ports to a common output port.

Attractively bound pairs of atoms in the Bose-Hubbard model and antiferromagnetism

We consider a periodic lattice loaded with pairs of bosonic atoms tightly bound to each other via strong attractive on-site interaction that exceeds the inter-site tunneling rate. An ensemble of such lattice-dimers is accurately described by an effective Hamiltonian of hard core bosons with strong nearest-neighbor repulsion which is equivalent to the $XXZ$ model with Ising-like anisotropy. We calculate the ground-state phase diagram for a one-dimensional system which exhibits incompressible phases, corresponding to an empty and a fully filled lattice (ferromagnetic phases) and a half-filled alternating density crystal (anti-ferromagnetic phase), separated from each other by compressible phases. In a finite lattice the compressible phases show characteristic oscillatory modulations on top of the anti-ferromagnetic density profile and in density-density correlations. We derive a kink model which provides simple quantitative explanation of these features. To describe the long-range correlations of the system we employ the Luttinger liquid theory with the relevant Luttinger parameter $K$ obtained exactly using the Bethe Ansatz solution. We calculate the density-density as well as first-order correlations and find excellent agreement with numerical results obtained with density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. We also present a perturbative treatment of the system in higher dimensions.

Low-loss negative refraction by laser induced magneto-electric cross-coupling

We discuss the feasibility of negative refraction with reduced absorption in coherently driven atomic media. Coherent coupling of an electric and a magnetic dipole transition by laser fields induces magneto-electric cross-coupling and negative refraction at dipole densities which are considerably smaller than necessary to achieve a negative permeability. At the same time the absorption gets minimized due to destructive quantum interference and the ratio of negative refraction index to absorption becomes orders of magnitude larger than in systems without coherent cross-coupling. The proposed scheme allows for a fine-tuning of the refractive index. We derive a generalized expression for the impedance of a medium with magneto-electric cross coupling and show that impedance matching to vacuum can easily be achieved. Finally we discuss the tensorial properties of the medium response and derive expressions for the dependence of the refractive index on the propagation direction.

Bose-Einstein condensation of stationary-light polaritons

We propose and analyze a mechanism for Bose-Einstein condensation of stationary dark-state polaritons. Dark-state polaritons (DSPs) are formed in the interaction of light with laser-driven 3-level Lambda-type atoms and are the basis of phenomena such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), ultra-slow and stored light. They have long intrinsic lifetimes and in a stationary set-up with two counterpropagating control fields of equal intensity have a 3D quadratic dispersion profile with variable effective mass. Since DSPs are bosons they can undergo a Bose-Einstein condensation at a critical temperature which can be many orders of magnitude larger than that of atoms. We show that thermalization of polaritons can occur via elastic collisions mediated by a resonantly enhanced optical Kerr nonlinearity on a time scale short compared to the decay time. Finally condensation can be observed by turning stationary into propagating polaritons and monitoring the emitted light.

Quantum liquid of repulsively bound pairs of particles in a lattice

Repulsively interacting particles in a periodic potential can form bound composite objects, whose dissociation is suppressed by a band gap. Nearly pure samples of such repulsively bound pairs of cold atoms -- "dimers" -- have recently been prepared by Winkler et al. [Nature 441, 853 (2006)]. We here derive an effective Hamiltonian for a lattice loaded with dimers only and discuss its implications to the many-body dynamics of the system. We find that the dimer-dimer interaction includes strong on-site repulsion and nearest-neighbor attraction which always dominates over the dimer kinetic energy at low temperatures. The dimers then form incompressible, minimal-surface "droplets" of a quantum lattice liquid. For low lattice filling, the effective Hamiltonian can be mapped onto the spin-1/2 XXZ model with fixed total magnetization which exhibits a first-order phase transition from the "droplet" to a "gas" phase. This opens the door to studying first order phase transitions using highly controllable ultracold atoms.

Quantum information processing with single photons and atomic ensembles in microwave coplanar waveguide resonators

We show that pairs of atoms optically excited to the Rydberg states can strongly interact with each other via effective long-range dipole-dipole or van der Waals interactions mediated by their non-resonant coupling to a common microwave field mode of a superconducting coplanar waveguide cavity. These cavity mediated interactions can be employed to generate single photons and to realize in a scalable configuration a universal phase gate between pairs of single photon pulses propagating or stored in atomic ensembles in the regime of electromagnetically induced transparency.

Local-field effects in radiatively broadened magneto-dielectric media: negative refraction and absorption reduction

We give a microscopic derivation of the Clausius-Mossotti relations for a homogeneous and isotropic magneto-dielectric medium consisting of radiatively broadened atomic oscillators. To this end the diagram series of electromagnetic propagators is calculated exactly for an infinite bi-cubic lattice of dielectric and magnetic dipoles for a lattice constant small compared to the resonance wavelength $λ$. Modifications of transition frequencies and linewidth of the elementary oscillators are taken into account in a selfconsistent way by a proper incorporation of the singular self-interaction terms. We show that in radiatively broadened media sufficiently close to the free-space resonance the real part of the index of refraction approaches the value -2 in the limit of $ρλ^3 \gg 1$, where $ρ$ is the number density of scatterers. Since at the same time the imaginary part vanishes as $1/ρ$ local field effects can have important consequences for realizing low-loss negative index materials.

Universal Approach to Optimal Photon Storage in Atomic Media

We present a universal physical picture for describing storage and retrieval of photon wave packets in a Lambda-type atomic medium. This physical picture encompasses a variety of different approaches to pulse storage ranging from adiabatic reduction of the photon group velocity and pulse-propagation control via off-resonant Raman fields to photon-echo based techniques. Furthermore, we derive an optimal control strategy for storage and retrieval of a photon wave packet of any given shape. All these approaches, when optimized, yield identical maximum efficiencies, which only depend on the optical depth of the medium.
