Moduli stabilization in heterotic M-theory

We reconsider the ingredients of moduli stabilization in heterotic M-theory. On this line we close a gap in the literature deriving the Kaehler potential dependence on vector bundle moduli and charged matter. Crucial in this derivation is our superspace formulation of 5d heterotic M-theory taking into account the Bianchi identities modified by brane terms. Likewise, we obtain the Fayet-Iliopolous terms due to brane localised anomalous U(1)'s. After assembling perturbative and non-perturbative contributions to the superpotential, we study supersymmetric (adS) vacua. It is found that the susy condition decouples the bundle moduli from the geometric moduli. We show that M-theory supersymmetric vacua without five-branes can be found, albeit not at phenomenologically interesting values of the geometric moduli. This result is fairly independent of the choice of vector bundle at the observable brane.

Electroweak Phase Transition and Baryogenesis in the nMSSM

We analyze the nMSSM with CP violation in the singlet sector. We study the static and dynamical properties of the electroweak phase transition. We conclude that electroweak baryogenesis in this model is generic in the sense that if the present limits on the mass spectrum are applied, no severe additional tuning is required to obtain a strong first-order phase transition and to generate a sufficient baryon asymmetry. For this we determine the shape of the nucleating bubbles, including the profiles of CP-violating phases. The baryon asymmetry is calculated using the advanced transport theory to first and second order in gradient expansion presented recently. Still, first and second generation sfermions must be heavy to avoid large electric dipole moments.

Radion Stabilization In 5D SUGRA

We present a detailed study of radion stabilization within 5D conformal SUGRA compactified on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2$ orbifold. We use an effective 4D superfield description developed in our previous work. The effects of tree level bulk and boundary couplings, and in particular of one loop contributions and of a non perturbative correction on the radion stabilization are investigated. We find new examples of radion stabilization in non SUSY and (meta-stable) SUSY preserving Minkowski vacua.

Particle number in kinetic theory

We provide a derivation for the particle number densities on phase space for scalar and fermionic fields in terms of Wigner functions. Our expressions satisfy the desired properties: for bosons the particle number is positive, for fermions it lies in the interval between zero and one, and both are consistent with thermal field theory. As applications we consider the Bunch-Davies vacuum and fermionic preheating after inflation.

4D Superfield Reduction of 5D Orbifold SUGRA and Heterotic M-theory

We present a detailed study of the reduction to 4D of 5D supergravity compactified on the S^1/Z_2 orbifold. For this purpose we develop and employ a recently proposed N=1 conformal superfield description of the 5D supergravity couplings to abelian vector and hypermultiplets. In particular, we obtain a unique relation of the "radion" to chiral superfields as in global 5D SUSY and we can embed the universal hypermultiplet into this formalism. In our approach, it is transparent how the superconformal structure of the effective 4D actions is inherited from the one of the original 5D supergravity. We consider both ungauged and gauged 5D supergravities. This includes compactifications in unwarped geometries, generalizations of the supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum (RS) model as well as 5D heterotic M-theory. In the unwarped case, after obtaining the effective Kaehler potentials and superpotentials, we demonstrate that the tree-level 4D potentials have flat and/or tachyonic directions. One-loop corrections to the Kaehler potential and gaugino condensation are presented as suitable tools for moduli stabilization to be discussed in subsequent work. Turning to the RS-like models, we obtain a master formula for the Kaehler potential for an arbitrary number of vector and hyper moduli, which we evaluate exactly for special cases. Finally, we formulate the superfield description of 5D heterotic M-theory and obtain its effective 4D description for the universal (h^(1,1)=1) case, in the presence of an arbitrary number of bulk 5-branes. We present, as a check of our expressions, time-dependent solutions of 4D heterotic M-theory, which uplift to 5D solutions generalizing the ones recently found in hep-th/0502077.

Nonperturbative dynamical many-body theory of a Bose-Einstein condensate

A dynamical many-body theory is presented which systematically extends beyond mean-field and perturbative quantum-field theoretical procedures. It allows us to study the dynamics of strongly interacting quantum-degenerate atomic gases. The non-perturbative approximation scheme is based on a systematic expansion of the two-particle irreducible effective action in powers of the inverse number of field components. This yields dynamic equations which contain direct scattering, memory and ``off-shell'' effects that are not captured by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This is relevant to account for the dynamics of, e.g., strongly interacting quantum gases atoms near a scattering resonance, or of one-dimensional Bose gases in the Tonks-Girardeau regime. We apply the theory to a homogeneous ultracold Bose gas in one spatial dimension. Considering the time evolution of an initial state far from equilibrium we show that it quickly evolves to a non-equilibrium quasistationary state and discuss the possibility to attribute an effective temperature to it. The approach to thermal equilibrium is found to be extremely slow.

SO(10)-GUT Coherent Baryogenesis

A model for GUT baryogenesis, coherent baryogenesis within the framework of supersymmetric SO(10), is considered. In particular, we discuss the Barr-Raby model, where at the end of hybrid infl ation charge asymmetries can be created through the time-dependent higgsino-gaugino mixing mass matrix. These asymmetries are processed to Standard Model matter through decays via nonrenormalizable (B-L)-violating operators. We find that a baryon asymmetry in accordance with observation can be generated. An appendix is devoted to provide useful formulas and concrete examples for calculations within SO(10).

Worldlines on Orbifolds and the Fayet-Iliopoulos Term

We adapt ``string-inspired'' worldline techniques to one-loop calculations on orbifolds, in particular on the $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold. Our method also allows for the treatment of brane-localized terms, or bulk-brane couplings. For demonstration, we reproduce the well-known result for the one-loop induced Fayet-Iliopoulos term in rigidly supersymmetric Abelian gauge theory, and generalize it to the case where soft supersymmetry breaking mass terms for the bulk scalar fields are present on the branes.

(BPS) Fayet-Iliopoulos Terms in 5D Orbifold SUGRA

We discuss Fayet-Iliopoulos terms in the context of five-dimensional supergravity compactified on an orbifold. For this purpose we use our superfield formulation of the off-shell 5D SUGRA. In the case of tuned FI terms, contrary to other claims, we find BPS solutions which ensure that N=1 supersymmetry is unbroken also in warped geometries. As in the rigid case, the FI terms induce odd masses for charged hypermultiplets, leading to the (de)localisation of the KK wave-functions near the fix-point branes. In the case of ungauged U(1)_R symmetry, we present also supersymmetric warped solutions in the presence of non-trivial profiles of charged hyperscalars.

Gauge and Modulus Inflation from 5D Orbifold SUGRA

We study the inflationary scenarios driven by a Wilson line field - the fifth component of a 5D gauge field and corresponding modulus field, within S^1/Z_2 orbifold supergravity (SUGRA). We use our off shell superfield formulation and give a detailed description of the issue of SUSY breaking by the F-component of the radion superfield. By a suitably gauged U(1)R symmetry and including couplings with compensator supermultiplets and a linear multiplet, we achieve a self consistent radion mediated SUSY breaking of no scale type. The inflaton 1-loop effective potential has attractive features needed for successful inflation. An interesting feature of both presented inflationary scenarios are the red tilted spectra with ns~0.96. For gauge inflation we obtain a significant tensor to scalar ratio r~0.1 of the density perturbations, while for the modulus inflation r is strongly suppressed.

Superfield Approach to 5D Conformal SUGRA and the Radion

We propose that the radion chiral supermultiplet of five dimensional compactified supergravity is obtained by reduction of the graviphoton gauge multiplet to N=1 superfields in the off shell 5D superconformal gravity formalism of Fujita, Kugo and Ohashi. We present a superfield Lagrangian of Chern-Simons type (similar to global SUSY), which reproduces all component couplings of gauge fields and the radion. A hypermultiplet superspace action is also proposed which correctly accounts for the coupling of matter multiplets with gauge and radion superfields. 4D supergravity enters by the coupling to the 4D Weyl multiplet, an even orbifold parity multiplet embedded in the 5D Weyl multiplet. We apply this formalism to a discussion of Fayet-Iliopolous terms, and the gauging of orbifold SUGRA to obtain warped solutions.

The Radion in 5D Conformal SUGRA: Superspace Action

We shortly review our new superfield formalism in the framework of Fujita, Kugo, Ohashi 5D conformal supergravity, in particular with an $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold. The radion of the fifth dimension is embedded in two related superfields, a chiral and a general multiplet and is linked to the radion superfield of rigid SUSY. The superspace action of the gauge sector is of the Chern-Simons type. We also present the superspace action for hypermultiplets and discuss the role of compensators. The presented formalism should be very useful for applications. We demonstrate this for obtaining the RS solution.

Kinetic description of fermion flavor mixing and CP-violating sources for baryogenesis

We derive transport equations for fermionic systems with a space-time dependent mass matrix in flavor space allowing for complex elements leading to CP violation required for electroweak baryogenesis. By constructing appropriate projectors in flavor space of the relevant tree level Kadanoff-Baym equations, we split the constraint equations into "diagonal" and "transversal" parts in flavor space, and show that they decouple. While the diagonal densities exhibit standard dispersion relations at leading order in gradients, the transverse densities exhibit a novel on-shell structure. Next, the kinetic equations are considered to second order in gradients and the CP-violating source terms are isolated. This requires a thorough discussion of a flavor independent definition of charge-parity symmetry operation. To make a link with baryogenesis in the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, we construct the Green functions for the leading order kinetic operator and solve the kinetic equations for two mixing fermions (charginos). We take account of flavor blind damping, and consider the cases of inefficient and moderate diffusion. The resulting densities are the CP-violating chargino currents that source baryogenesis.

Coherent Baryogenesis and Nonthermal Leptogenesis: A comparison

We present a new mechanism for baryogenesis: at preheating after inflation fermions acquire a varying mass by their coupling to a time dependent field. Their CP-violating mass matrix can generate a charge asymmetry to be transformed into a lepton asymmetry through decay into standard model particles and heavy Majorana neutrinos. In a concrete model of hybrid inflation we compare ``coherent baryogenesis'' with nonthermal leptogenesis by perturbative decay of the inflation condensates.

Coherent Baryogenesis

We propose a new baryogenesis scenario based on coherent production and mixing of different fermionic species. The mechanism is operative during phase transitions, at which the fermions acquire masses via Yukawa couplings to scalar fields. Baryon production is efficient when the mass matrix is nonadiabatically varying, nonsymmetric and when it violates CP and B-L directly, or some other charges that are eventually converted to B-L. We first consider a toy model, which involves two mixing fermionic species, and then a hybrid inflationary scenario embedded in a supersymmetric Pati-Salam GUT. We show that, quite generically, a baryon excess in accordance with observation can result.

Axial Currents from CKM Matrix CP Violation and Electroweak Baryogenesis

The first principle derivation of kinetic transport equations suggests that a CP-violating mass term during the electroweak phase transition can induce axial vector currents. Since the important terms are of first order in gradients there is a possibility to construct new rephasing invariants that are proportional to the CP phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and to circumvent the upper bound of CP-violating contributions in the Standard Model, the Jarlskog invariant. Qualitative arguments are given that these new contributions still fail to explain electroweak baryogenesis in extensions of the Standard Model with a strong first order phase transition.

Resummed effective action in the world-line formalism

Using the world-line method we resum the scalar one-loop effective action. This is based on an exact expression for the one-loop action obtained for a background potential and a Taylor expansion of the potential up to quadratic order in x-space. We thus reproduce results of Masso and Rota very economically. An alternative resummation scheme is suggested using ``center of mass'' based loops which is equivalent under the assumption of vanishing third and higher derivatives in the Taylor expansion but leads to simplified expressions. In an appendix some general issues concerning the relation between world-line integrals with fixed end points versus integrals with fixed center are clarified. We finally note that this method is also very valuable for gauge field effective actions where it is based on the Euler--Heisenberg type resummation.
