Precursors From $S^{(1)}/Z_2\tm Z_2'$ Orbifold GUTs

The possibility of appearance of GUT precursors near the TeV scale (suggested by Dienes-Dudas-Gherghetta) is addressed within 5D GUTs compactified on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2\tm Z_2'$ orbifold. For a low compactification scale (large radius), there is a significant non universal logarithmic contribution in the relative running of gauge couplings. This within 5D SU(5), with the minimal field content, gives wrong prediction for $\al_3(M_Z)$ unless one goes beyond the minimal setting. The realization of the light precursors' idea thus requires some specific extensions. As a scenario alternative to SU(5) we also consider an SU(6) orbifold GUT, whose minimal non SUSY version gives natural unification. In all the presented unification scenarios with light precursors, various GUT scales are realized. This allows the model to be naturally embedded in either heterotic or Type ${\rm I}$ string theories.

Kinetic approach to electroweak baryogenesis

After a short review of baryogenesis mechanisms, we focus on the charge transport mechanism at the electroweak scale, effective at strong electroweak phase transitions. Starting from the one-loop Schwinger-Dyson equations for fermions coupled to bosons, we present a derivation of the relevant kinetic equations in the on-shell and gradient approximations, relevant for the thick wall baryogenesis regime. We then discuss the CP-violating source from the semiclassical force in the flow term, and compare it with the source arising in the collision term of the kinetic equation. Finally, we summarize the results concerning the chargino mediated baryogenesis in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Varying Couplings From Orbifold GUTs

We discuss the variation of gauge couplings in time in the framework of orbifold constructions, due to a change of the extra compact dimension's size. Models with gauge coupling unification allow to estimate the variation of the strong coupling constant $\al_3$ and to relate it to a variation of $α_{em}$. The extra-dimensional construction turns out to be crucial for the model to be compatible with data. Within the presented 5D scenarios, the tower of KK states significantly affects gauge coupling running, leads to low scale unification, and provides a suppression of the $\al_3(M_Z)$ variation.

Gauge Coupling Unification and Phenomenology of Selected Orbifold 5D N=1 SUSY Models

We study gauge coupling unification and various phenomenological issues, such as baryon number conservation, the $μ$ problem and neutrino anomalies, within SUSY 5D orbifold models. The 5D MSSM on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2$ orbifold with 'minimal' field content does not lead to low scale unification, while some of its extensions can give unification near the multi TeV scale. Within the orbifold SU(5) GUT, low scale unification can not be realized due to full SU(5) multiplets participating in the renormalization above the compactification scale. As alternative examples, we construct 5D N=1 SUSY Pati-Salam $SU(4)_c\tm SU(2)_L\tm SU(2)_R\equiv G_{422}$ and flipped $SU(5)\tm U(1)\equiv G_{51}$ GUTs [both maximal subgroups of SO(10)] on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2\tm Z_2'$ orbifold. New examples of low scale unifications within $G_{422}$ are presented. For $G_{51}$ the unification scale is shown to be necessarily close to $\sim 10^{16}$ GeV. The possible influence of brane couplings on the gauge coupling unification is also outlined. For the resolution of the various phenomenological problems extensions with a discrete ${\cal Z}$ symmetry turn out to be very effective.

5D SUSY Orbifold SU(6) GUT and Pseudo-Goldstone Higgs Doublets

We construct a 5D SUSY SU(6) GUT on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2\tm Z_2'$ orbifold. The first stage of gauge symmetry breaking occurs through compactification and a specific selection of boundary conditions. Additional symmetries play a crucial role for the generation of $μ$ and $Bμ$ terms of appropriate values: with a $SU(2)_{cus}$ custodial symmetry the Higgs doublets naturally emerge as massless pseudo-Goldstone bosons in the unbroken SUSY limit. After SUSY breaking they get masses of the order of the weak scale. If instead of $SU(2)_{cus}$ a discrete $Z_5$ symmetry is applied the Higgs doublet's masses are still adequately suppressed, but they are not pseudo-Goldstones. The $Z_5$ discrete symmetry also can be very important for GUT scale generation and an all order hierarchy. Fermion masses are naturally generated and nicely blend with additional symmetries. In the considered scenario unification of the three gauge couplings occurs near $10^{16}$ GeV.

Determinant Calculations with Random Walk Worldline Loops

We propose to calculate bosonic and fermionic determinants with some general field background, and the corresponding 1-loop effective actions by evaluating random walk worldline loops generated statistically on the lattice. This is illustrated by some numerical calculations for constant gauge field backgrounds and then discussed for the general case.

Semiclassical force for electroweak baryogenesis: three-dimensional derivation

We derive a semiclassical transport equation for fermions propagating in the presence of a CP-violating planar bubble wall at a first order electroweak phase transition. Starting from the Kadanoff-Baym (KB) equation for the two-point (Wightman) function we perform an expansion in gradients, or equivalently in the Planck constant h-bar. We show that to first order in h-bar the KB equations have a spectral solution, which allows for an on-shell description of the plasma excitations. The CP-violating force acting on these excitations is found to be enhanced by a boost factor in comparison with the 1+1-dimensional case studied in a former paper. We find that an identical semiclassical force can be obtained by the WKB method. Applications to the MSSM are also mentioned.

Some aspects of collisional sources for electroweak baryogenesis

We consider the dynamics of fermions with a spatially varying mass which couple to bosons through a Yukawa interaction term and perform a consistent weak coupling truncation of the relevant kinetic equations. We then use a gradient expansion and derive the CP-violating source in the collision term for fermions which appears at first order in gradients. The collisional sources together with the semiclassical force constitute the CP-violating sources relevant for baryogenesis at the electroweak scale. We discuss also the absence of sources at first order in gradients in the scalar equation, and the limitations of the relaxation time approximation.

Quantum Boltzmann equations for electroweak baryogenesis including gauge fields

We review and extend to include the gauge fields our derivation of the semiclassical limit of the collisionless quantum transport equations for the fermions in presence of a CP-violating bubble wall at a first order electroweak phase transition. We show how the (gradient correction modified) Lorenz-force appears both in the Schwinger-Keldysh approach and in the semiclassical WKB-treatment. In the latter approach the inclusion of gauge fields removes the apparent phase reparametrization dependence of the intermediate calculations. We also discuss setting up the fluid equations for practical calculations in electroweak baryogenesis including the self-consistent (hyper)electric field and the anomaly.

First principle derivation of semiclassical force for electroweak baryogenesis

We perform a systematic gradient expansion on kinetic equations and derive the CP-violating semiclassical force for fermions propagating in presence of a CP-violating wall at a first order electroweak phase transition. The force appears at order h-bar in the flow term of the kinetic equation and agrees with the semiclassical force used for baryogenesis computations. In particular we consider the force for charginos in both the MSSM and NMSSM. We then study the continuity equations for the vector and axial vector currents and stress the role of the latter as the one containing baryogenesis sources. We also show that there is no CP-violating force for bosons to order h-bar in gradient expansion.

Electroweak Baryogenesis: Concrete in a SUSY Model with a Gauge Singlet

SUSY models with a gauge singlet easily allow for a strong first order electroweak phase transition (EWPT) if the vevs of the singlet and Higgs fields are of comparable size. We discuss the profile of the stationary expanding bubble wall and CP-violation in the effective potential, in particular transitional CP-violation inside the bubble wall during the EWPT. The dispersion relations for charginos contain CP-violating terms in the WKB approximation. These enter as source terms in the Boltzmann equations for the (particle--antiparticle) chemical potentials and fuel the creation of a baryon asymmetry through the weak sphaleron in the hot phase. This is worked out for concrete parameters.

Electroweak Baryogenesis in Supersymmetric Variants

We argue that the creation of a baryon asymmetry in the early universe is an intriguing case where several aspects of ``Beyond'' physics are needed. We then concentrate on baryogenesis in a strong first-order phase transition and discuss that supersymmetric variants of the electroweak theory (MSSM and some version of NMSSM) rather naturally provide the necessary ingredients. The charginos and the stops play a prominent role. We present CP-violating dispersion relations in the chargino sector and show results of a concrete model calculation for the asymmetry production based on quasi-classical Boltzmann transport equations and sphaleron transitions in the hot electroweak phase.

Baryogenesis at the Electroweak Phase Transition for a SUSY Model with a Gauge Singlet

SUSY models with a gauge singlet easily allow for a strongly first order electroweak phase transition (EWPT). We discuss the wall profile, in particular transitional CP violation during the EWPT. We calculate CP violating source terms for the charginos in the WKB approximation and solve the relevant transport equations to obtain the generated baryon asymmetry.

Two-loop Feynman Diagrams in Yang-Mills Theory from Bosonic String Amplitudes

We present intermediate results of an ongoing investigation which attempts a generalization of the well known one-loop Bern Kosower rules of Yang-Mills theory to higher loop orders. We set up a general procedure to extract the field theoretical limit of bosonic open string diagrams, based on the sewing construction of higher loop world sheets. It is tested with one- and two-loop scalar field theory, as well as one-loop and two-loop vacuum Yang-Mills diagrams, reproducing earlier results. It is then applied to two-loop two-point Yang-Mills diagrams in order to extract universal renormalization coefficients that can be compared to field theory. While developing numerous technical tools to compute the relevant contributions, we hit upon important conceptual questions: Do string diagrams reproduce Yang-Mills Feynman diagrams in a certain preferred gauge? Do they employ a certain preferred renormalization scheme? Are four gluon vertices related to three gluon vertices? Unfortunately, our investigations remained inconclusive up to now.

World-line approach to the Bern-Kosower formalism in two-loop Yang-Mills theory

Based on the world-line formalism with a sewing method, we derive the Yang-Mills effective action in a form useful to generate the Bern-Kosower-type master formulae for gluon scattering amplitudes at the two-loop level. It is shown that four-gluon ($Φ^4$ type sewing) contributions can be encapsulated in the action with three-gluon ($Φ^3$ type) vertices only, the total action thus becoming a simple expression. We then derive a general formula for a two-loop Euler-Heisenberg type action in a pseudo-abelian $su(2)$ background. The ghost loop and fermion loop cases are also studied.
