Martingale transport with homogeneous stock movements

We study a variant of the martingale optimal transport problem in a multi-period setting to derive robust price bounds of a financial derivative. On top of marginal and martingale constraints, we introduce a time-homogeneity assumption, which restricts the variability of the forward-looking transitions of the martingale across time. We provide a dual formulation in terms of superhedging and discuss relaxations of the time-homogeneity assumption by adding market frictions. In financial terms, the introduced time-homogeneity corresponds to a time-consistency condition for call prices, given the state of the stock. The time homogeneity assumption leads to improved price bounds as market data from many time points can be incorporated effectively. The approach is illustrated with two numerical examples.

Limits of random walks with distributionally robust transition probabilities

We consider a nonlinear random walk which, in each time step, is free to choose its own transition probability within a neighborhood (w.r.t. Wasserstein distance) of the transition probability of a fixed Lévy process. In analogy to the classical framework we show that, when passing from discrete to continuous time via a scaling limit, this nonlinear random walk gives rise to a nonlinear semigroup. We explicitly compute the generator of this semigroup and corresponding PDE as a perturbation of the generator of the initial Lévy process.

Viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations in exponential Orlicz hearts

We provide a semigroup approach to the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation. It turns out that exponential Orlicz hearts are suitable spaces to handle the (quadratic) non-linearity of the Hamiltonian. Based on an abstract extension result for nonlinear semigroups on spaces of continuous functions, we represent the solution of the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation as a strongly continuous convex semigroup on an exponential Orlicz heart. As a result, the solution depends continuously on the initial data. We further determine the symmetric Lipschitz set which is invariant under the semigroup. This automatically yields a priori estimates and regularity in Sobolev spaces. In particular, on the domain restricted to the symmetric Lipschitz set, the generator can be explicitly determined and linked with the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

Representation of increasing convex functionals with countably additive measures

We derive two types of representation results for increasing convex functionals in terms of countably additive measures. The first is a max-representation of functionals defined on spaces of real-valued continuous functions and the second a sup-representation of functionals defined on spaces of real-valued Borel measurable functions. Our assumptions consist of sequential semicontinuity conditions which are easy to verify in different applications.

A Fenchel-Moreau theorem for $\bar L^0$-valued functions

We establish a Fenchel-Moreau type theorem for proper convex functions $f\colon X\to \bar{L}^0$, where $(X, Y, \langle \cdot,\cdot \rangle)$ is a dual pair of Banach spaces and $\bar L^0$ is the space of all extended real-valued functions on a $σ$-finite measure space. We introduce the concept of stable lower semi-continuity which is shown to be equivalent to the existence of a dual representation $$\smash{ f(x)=\sup_{y \in L^0(Y)} \left\{\langle x, y \rangle - f^\ast(y)\right\}, \quad x\in X,} $$ where $L^0(Y)$ is the space of all strongly measurable functions with values in $Y$, and $\langle \cdot,\cdot \rangle$ is understood pointwise almost everywhere. The proof is based on a conditional extension result and conditional functional analysis.

Convex semigroups on $L^p$-like spaces

In this paper, we investigate convex semigroups on Banach lattices with order continuous norm, having $L^p$-spaces in mind as a typical application. We show that the basic results from linear $C_0$-semigroup theory extend to the convex case. We prove that the generator of a convex $C_0$-semigroup is closed and uniquely determines the semigroup whenever the domain is dense. Moreover, the domain of the generator is invariant under the semigroup; a result that leads to the well-posedness of the related Cauchy problem. In a last step, we provide conditions for the existence and strong continuity of semigroup envelopes for families of $C_0$-semigroups. The results are discussed in several examples such as semilinear heat equations and nonlinear integro-differential equations.

Large deviations built on max-stability

In this paper, we show that the basic results in large deviations theory hold for general monetary risk measures, which satisfy the crucial property of max-stability. A max-stable monetary risk measure fulfills a lattice homomorphism property, and satisfies under a suitable tightness condition the Laplace Principle (LP), that is, admits a dual representation with affine convex conjugate. By replacing asymptotic concentration of probability by concentration of risk, we formulate a Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for max-stable monetary risk measures, and show its equivalence to the LP. In particular, the special case of the asymptotic entropic risk measure corresponds to the classical Varadhan-Bryc equivalence between the LDP and LP. The main results are illustrated by the asymptotic shortfall risk measure.

Robust risk aggregation with neural networks

We consider settings in which the distribution of a multivariate random variable is partly ambiguous. We assume the ambiguity lies on the level of the dependence structure, and that the marginal distributions are known. Furthermore, a current best guess for the distribution, called reference measure, is available. We work with the set of distributions that are both close to the given reference measure in a transportation distance (e.g. the Wasserstein distance), and additionally have the correct marginal structure. The goal is to find upper and lower bounds for integrals of interest with respect to distributions in this set. The described problem appears naturally in the context of risk aggregation. When aggregating different risks, the marginal distributions of these risks are known and the task is to quantify their joint effect on a given system. This is typically done by applying a meaningful risk measure to the sum of the individual risks. For this purpose, the stochastic interdependencies between the risks need to be specified. In practice the models of this dependence structure are however subject to relatively high model ambiguity. The contribution of this paper is twofold: Firstly, we derive a dual representation of the considered problem and prove that strong duality holds. Secondly, we propose a generally applicable and computationally feasible method, which relies on neural networks, in order to numerically solve the derived dual problem. The latter method is tested on a number of toy examples, before it is finally applied to perform robust risk aggregation in a real world instance.

Pathwise superhedging on prediction sets

In this paper we provide a pricing-hedging duality for the model-independent superhedging price with respect to a prediction set $Ξ\subseteq C[0,T]$, where the superhedging property needs to hold pathwise, but only for paths lying in $Ξ$. For any Borel measurable claim $ξ$ which is bounded from below, the superhedging price coincides with the supremum over all pricing functionals $\mathbb{E}_{\mathbb{Q}}[ξ]$ with respect to martingale measures $\mathbb{Q}$ concentrated on the prediction set $Ξ$. This allows to include beliefs in future paths of the price process expressed by the set $Ξ$, while eliminating all those which are seen as impossible. Moreover, we provide several examples to justify our setup.

Stochastic integration and differential equations for typical paths

The goal of this paper is to define stochastic integrals and to solve stochastic differential equations for typical paths taking values in a possibly infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space without imposing any probabilistic structure. In the spirit of [33, 37] and motivated by the pricing duality result obtained in [4] we introduce an outer measure as a variant of the pathwise minimal superhedging price where agents are allowed to trade not only in $ω$ but also in $\intω\,dω:=ω^2 -\langle ω\rangle$ and where they are allowed to include beliefs in future paths of the price process expressed by a prediction set. We then call a property to hold true on typical paths if the set of paths where the property fails is null with respect to our outer measure. It turns out that adding the second term $ω^2 -\langle ω\rangle$ in the definition of the outer measure enables to directly construct stochastic integrals which are continuous, even for typical paths taking values in an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space. Moreover, when restricting to continuous paths whose quadratic variation is absolutely continuous with uniformly bounded derivative, a second construction of model-free stochastic integrals for typical paths is presented, which then allows to solve in a model-free way stochastic differential equations for typical paths.

A semigroup approach to nonlinear Lévy processes

We study the relation between Lévy processes under nonlinear expectations, nonlinear semigroups and fully nonlinear PDEs. First, we establish a one-to-one relation between nonlinear Lévy processes and nonlinear Markovian convolution semigroups. Second, we provide a condition on a family of infinitesimal generators $(A_λ)_{λ\inΛ}$ of linear Lévy processes which guarantees the existence of a nonlinear Lévy processes such that the corresponding nonlinear Markovian convolution semigroup is a viscosity solution of the fully nonlinear PDE $\partial_t u=\sup_{λ\in Λ} A_λu$. The results are illustrated with several examples.

Duality for pathwise superhedging in continuous time

We provide a model-free pricing-hedging duality in continuous time. For a frictionless market consisting of $d$ risky assets with continuous price trajectories, we show that the purely analytic problem of finding the minimal superhedging price of a path dependent European option has the same value as the purely probabilistic problem of finding the supremum of the expectations of the option over all martingale measures. The superhedging problem is formulated with simple trading strategies, the claim is the limit inferior of continuous functions, which allows for upper and lower semi-continuous claims, and superhedging is required in the pathwise sense on a $σ$-compact sample space of price trajectories. If the sample space is stable under stopping, the probabilistic problem reduces to finding the supremum over all martingale measures with compact support. As an application of the general results we deduce dualities for Vovk's outer measure and semi-static superhedging with finitely many securities.

Computation of optimal transport and related hedging problems via penalization and neural networks

This paper presents a widely applicable approach to solving (multi-marginal, martingale) optimal transport and related problems via neural networks. The core idea is to penalize the optimization problem in its dual formulation and reduce it to a finite dimensional one which corresponds to optimizing a neural network with smooth objective function. We present numerical examples from optimal transport, martingale optimal transport, portfolio optimization under uncertainty and generative adversarial networks that showcase the generality and effectiveness of the approach.

Parameter-dependent Stochastic Optimal Control in Finite Discrete Time

We prove a general existence result in stochastic optimal control in discrete time where controls take values in conditional metric spaces, and depend on the current state and the information of past decisions through the evolution of a recursively defined forward process. The generality of the problem lies beyond the scope of standard techniques in stochastic control theory such as random sets, normal integrands and measurable selection theory. The main novelty is a formalization in conditional metric space and the use of techniques in conditional analysis. We illustrate the existence result by several examples including wealth-dependent utility maximization under risk constraints with bounded and unbounded wealth-dependent control sets, utility maximization with a measurable dimension, and dynamic risk sharing. Finally, we discuss how conditional analysis relates to random set theory.

Robust expected utility maximization with medial limits

In this paper we study a robust expected utility maximization problem with random endowment in discrete time. We give conditions under which an optimal strategy exists and derive a dual representation for the optimal utility. Our approach is based on a general representation result for monotone convex functionals, a functional version of Choquet's capacitability theorem and medial limits. The novelty is that it works under nondominated model uncertainty without any assumptions of time-consistency. As applications, we discuss robust utility maximization problems with moment constraints, Wasserstein constraints and Wasserstein penalties.

A pointwise bipolar theorem

We provide a pointwise bipolar theorem for liminf-closed convex sets of positive Borel measurable functions on a sigma-compact metric space without the assumption that the polar is a tight set of measures. As applications we derive a version of the transport duality under non-tight marginals, and a superhedging duality for semistatic hedging in discrete time.

Marginal and dependence uncertainty: bounds, optimal transport, and sharpness

Motivated by applications in model-free finance and quantitative risk management, we consider Fréchet classes of multivariate distribution functions where additional information on the joint distribution is assumed, while uncertainty in the marginals is also possible. We derive optimal transport duality results for these Fréchet classes that extend previous results in the related literature. These proofs are based on representation results for increasing convex functionals and the explicit computation of the conjugates. We show that the dual transport problem admits an explicit solution for the function $f=1_B$, where $B$ is a rectangular subset of $\mathbb R^d$, and provide an intuitive geometric interpretation of this result. The improved Fréchet--Hoeffding bounds provide ad-hoc upper bounds for these Fréchet classes. We show that the improved Fréchet--Hoeffding bounds are pointwise sharp for these classes in the presence of uncertainty in the marginals, while a counterexample yields that they are not pointwise sharp in the absence of uncertainty in the marginals, even in dimension 2. The latter result sheds new light on the improved Fréchet--Hoeffding bounds, since Tankov [30] has showed that, under certain conditions, these bounds are sharp in dimension 2.

Measures and integrals in conditional set theory

The aim of this article is to establish basic results in a conditional measure theory. The results are applied to prove that arbitrary kernels and conditional distributions are represented by measures in a conditional set theory. In particular, this extends the usual representation results for separable spaces.
