Boundedness of the dyadic maximal function on graded Lie groups

Let $1<p\leq \infty$ and let $n\geq 2.$ It was proved independently by C. Calderón, R. Coifman and G. Weiss that the dyadic maximal function \begin{equation*} \mathcal{M}^{dσ}_Df(x)=\sup_{j\in\mathbb{Z}}\left|\smallint\limits_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}}f(x-2^jy)dσ(y)\right| \end{equation*} is a bounded operator on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ where $dσ(y)$ is the surface measure on $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}.$ In this paper we prove an analogue of this result on arbitrary graded Lie groups. More precisely, to any finite Borel measure $dσ$ with compact support on a graded Lie group $G,$ we associate the corresponding dyadic maximal function $\mathcal{M}_D^{dσ}$ using the homogeneous structure of the group. Then, we prove a criterion in terms of the order (at zero and at infinity) of the group Fourier transform $\widehat{dσ}$ of $dσ$ with respect to a fixed Rockland operator $\mathcal{R}$ on $G$ that assures the boundedness of $\mathcal{M}_D^{dσ}$ on $L^p(G)$ for all $1<p\leq \infty.$

On the sharpness of Strichartz estimates and spectrum of compact Lie groups

We prove Strichartz estimates on any compact connected simple Lie group. In the diagonal case of Bourgain's exponents $p=q,$ we provide a new regularity order $s_{0}^{R}(p)$ in the sense that our (reverse) Strichartz estimates are valid when $s> s_{0}^{R}(p)$ and when $p\rightarrow 2^{+}.$ As expected our Sobolev index satisfies the estimate $ s_{0}^{R}(p)>s_{0}(d)=\frac{d}{2}-\frac{d+2}{p}.$ Motivated by the recent progress in the field, in the spirit of the analytical number theory methods developed by Bourgain in the analysis of periodic Schrödinger equations, we link the problem of finding Strichartz estimates on compact Lie groups with the problem of counting the number of representations $r_{s,2}(R)$ of an integer number $R$ as a sum of $s$ squares, and then, we implicitly use the very well known bounds for $r_{s,2}(R)$ from the Hardy-Littlewood-Ramanujan circle method. In our analysis, we explicitly compute the parametrisation of the spectrum of the Laplacian (modulo a factor depending on the geometry of the group) in terms of sums of squares. As a byproduct, our approach also yields explicit expressions for the spectrum of the Laplacian on all compact connected simple Lie groups, providing also a number of results for Strichartz estimates in the borderline case $p=2.$

Semilinear wave inequalities with double damping and potential terms on Riemannian Manifolds

We study a semilinear wave inequality with double damping on a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. The considered problem involves a potential function $V$ depending on the space variable in front of the power nonlinearity and an inhomogeneous term $W$ depending on both time and space variables. Namely, we establish sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of weak solutions in both cases: $W\equiv 0$ and $W\not\equiv 0$. The obtained conditions depend on the parameters of the problem as well as the geometry of the manifold. Some special cases of manifolds, and of $V$ and $W$ are discussed in detail.

Wave equations for the fractional Sturm-Liouville operator with singular coefficients

In this paper, we consider the wave equation for the fractional Sturm-Liouville operator with lower order terms and singular coefficients and data. We prove that the problem has a very weak solution. Furthermore, we prove the uniqueness in an appropriate sense and the consistency of the very weak solution concept with the classical theory.

LSTM-CNN: An efficient diagnostic network for Parkinson's disease utilizing dynamic handwriting analysis

Background and objectives: Dynamic handwriting analysis, due to its non-invasive and readily accessible nature, has recently emerged as a vital adjunctive method for the early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. In this study, we design a compact and efficient network architecture to analyse the distinctive handwriting patterns of patients' dynamic handwriting signals, thereby providing an objective identification for the Parkinson's disease diagnosis. Methods: The proposed network is based on a hybrid deep learning approach that fully leverages the advantages of both long short-term memory (LSTM) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Specifically, the LSTM block is adopted to extract the time-varying features, while the CNN-based block is implemented using one-dimensional convolution for low computational cost. Moreover, the hybrid model architecture is continuously refined under ablation studies for superior performance. Finally, we evaluate the proposed method with its generalization under a five-fold cross-validation, which validates its efficiency and robustness. Results: The proposed network demonstrates its versatility by achieving impressive classification accuracies on both our new DraWritePD dataset ($96.2\%$) and the well-established PaHaW dataset ($90.7\%$). Moreover, the network architecture also stands out for its excellent lightweight design, occupying a mere $0.084$M of parameters, with a total of only $0.59$M floating-point operations. It also exhibits near real-time CPU inference performance, with inference times ranging from $0.106$ to $0.220$s. Conclusions: We present a series of experiments with extensive analysis, which systematically demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed hybrid neural network in extracting distinctive handwriting patterns for precise diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

Optimal Image Transport on Sparse Dictionaries

In this paper, we derive a novel optimal image transport algorithm over sparse dictionaries by taking advantage of Sparse Representation (SR) and Optimal Transport (OT). Concisely, we design a unified optimization framework in which the individual image features (color, textures, styles, etc.) are encoded using sparse representation compactly, and an optimal transport plan is then inferred between two learned dictionaries in accordance with the encoding process. This paradigm gives rise to a simple but effective way for simultaneous image representation and transformation, which is also empirically solvable because of the moderate size of sparse coding and optimal transport sub-problems. We demonstrate its versatility and many benefits to different image-to-image translation tasks, in particular image color transform and artistic style transfer, and show the plausible results for photo-realistic transferred effects.

Fractional wave equation with irregular mass and dissipation

In this paper, we pursue our series of papers aiming to show the applicability of the concept of very weak solutions. We consider a wave model with irregular position dependent mass and dissipation terms, in particular, allowing for delta-like coefficients and prove that the problem has a very weak solution. Furthermore, we prove the uniqueness in an appropriate sense and the coherence of the very weak solution concept with classical theory. A special case of the model considered here, is the so-called telegraph equation.

Stein-Weiss inequality on non-compact symmetric spaces

Let $Δ$ be the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a non-compact symmetric space of any rank, and denote the bottom of its $L^2$-spectrum as $-|ρ|^{2}$. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive characterization of both the sufficient and necessary conditions ensuring the validity of the Stein-Weiss inequality for the entire family of operators $\lbrace{(-Δ+b)^{-\fracσ{2}}}\rbrace_{σ\ge0,\,b\ge-|ρ|^{2}}$. As an application, some weighted functional inequalities, such as Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, Gagliardo-Nirenberg's interpolation inequality, Pitt's inequality, etc., become available in this context. In particular, their sets of admissible indices are larger than those in the Euclidean setting.

$L^p$-$L^q$ estimates for subelliptic pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups

We establish the $L^p$-$L^q$-boundedness of subelliptic pseudo-differential operators on a compact Lie group $G$. Effectively, we deal with the $L^p$-$L^q$-bounds for operators in the sub-Riemmanian setting because the subelliptic classes are associated to a Hörmander sub-Laplacian. The Riemannian case associated with the Laplacian is also included as a special case. Then, applications to the $L^p$-$L^q$-boundedness of pseudo-differential operators in the Hörmander classes on $G$ are given in the complete range $0\leq δ\leq ρ\leq 1,$ $δ<1.$ This also gives the $L^p$-$L^q$-bounds in the Riemannian setting, because the later classes are associated with the Laplacian on $G$. In both cases, in the Riemannian and the sub-Riemannian settings, necessary and sufficient conditions for the $L^p$-$L^q$-boundedness of operators are also anaysed.

Pseudo-differential operators on radial sections of line bundles over the Poincaré upper half plane

In this article, we explore the boundedness properties of pseudo-differential operators on radial sections of line bundles over the Poincaré upper half plane, even when dealing with symbols of limited regularity. We first prove the boundedness of these operators when the symbol is smooth. To achieve this, we establish a connection between the operator norm of the local part of our pseudo-differential operators and the corresponding Euclidean pseudo-differential operators. Additionally, we introduce a class of rough symbols that lack any regularity conditions in the space variable and investigate the boundedness properties of the associated pseudo-differential operators. As a crucial part of our proof, we provide asymptotic estimates and functional identities for certain matrix coefficients of the principal and discrete series representations of the group $\mathrm{SL(2,\mathbb{R})}$.

Generalized fractional Dirac type operators

We introduce a class of fractional Dirac type operators with time variable coefficients by means of a Witt basis, the Djrbashian-Caputo fractional derivative and the fractional Laplacian, both operators defined with respect to some given functions. Direct and inverse fractional Cauchy type problems are studied for the introduced operators. We give explicit solutions of the considered fractional Cauchy type problems. We also use a recent method to recover a variable coefficient solution of some inverse fractional wave and heat type equations. Illustrative examples are provided.

Logarithmic Sobolev, Hardy and Poincaré inequalities on the Heisenberg group

In this paper we first prove a number of important inequalities with explicit constants in the setting of the Heisenberg group. This includes the fractional and integer Sobolev, Gagliardo-Nirenberg, (weighted) Hardy-Sobolev, Nash inequalities, and their logarithmic versions. In the case of the first order Sobolev inequality, our constant recovers the sharp constant of Jerison and Lee. Remarkably, we also establish the analogue of the Gross inequality with a semi-probability measure on the Heisenberg group that allows -- as it happens in the Euclidean setting -- an extension to infinite dimensions, and particularly can be regarded as an inequality on the infinite dimensional $\mathbb{H}^{\infty}$. Finally, we prove the so-called generalised Poincaré inequality on the Heisenberg group both with respect to the aforementioned semi-probability measure and the Haar measure, also with explicit constants.

Comparison of One- Two- and Three- Dimensional CNN models for Drawing-Test-Based Diagnostics of the Parkinson's Disease

Subject: In this article, convolutional networks of one, two, and three dimensions are compared with respect to their ability to distinguish between the drawing tests produced by Parkinson's disease patients and healthy control subjects. Motivation: The application of deep learning techniques for the analysis of drawing tests to support the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease has become a growing trend in the area of Artificial Intelligence. Method: The dynamic features of the handwriting signal are embedded in the static test data to generate one-dimensional time series, two-dimensional RGB images and three-dimensional voxelized point clouds, and then one-, two-, and three-dimensional CNN can be used to automatically extract features for effective diagnosis. Novelty: While there are many results that describe the application of two-dimensional convolutional models to the problem, to the best knowledge of the authors, there are no results based on the application of three-dimensional models and very few using one-dimensional models. Main result: The accuracy of the one-, two- and three-dimensional CNN models was 62.50%, 77.78% and 83.34% in the DraWritePD dataset (acquired by the authors) and 73.33%, 80.00% and 86.67% in the PaHaW dataset (well known from the literature), respectively. For these two data sets, the proposed three-dimensional convolutional classification method exhibits the best diagnostic performance.

A note on the polar decomposition in metric spaces

The analogue of polar coordinates in the Euclidean space, a polar decomposition in a metric space, if well-defined, can be very useful in dealing with integrals with respect to a sufficiently regular measure. In this note we handle the technical details associated with such polar decompositions.

Semi-sparsity Priors for Image Structure Analysis and Extraction

Image structure-texture decomposition is a long-standing and fundamental problem in both image processing and computer vision fields. In this paper, we propose a generalized semi-sparse regularization framework for image structural analysis and extraction, which allows us to decouple the underlying image structures from complicated textural backgrounds. Combining with different textural analysis models, such a regularization receives favorable properties differing from many traditional methods. We demonstrate that it is not only capable of preserving image structures without introducing notorious staircase artifacts in polynomial-smoothing surfaces but is also applicable for decomposing image textures with strong oscillatory patterns. Moreover, we also introduce an efficient numerical solution based on an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm, which gives rise to a simple and maneuverable way for image structure-texture decomposition. The versatility of the proposed method is finally verified by a series of experimental results with the capability of producing comparable or superior image decomposition results against cutting-edge methods.

Stein-Weiss-Adams inequality on Morrey spaces

We establish Adams type Stein-Weiss inequality on global Morrey spaces on general homogeneous groups. Special properties of homogeneous norms and some boundedness results on global Morrey spaces play key roles in our proofs. As consequence, we obtain fractional Hardy, Hardy-Sobolev, Rellich and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities on Morrey spaces on stratified groups. While the results are obtained in the setting of general homogeneous groups, they are new already for the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{N}.$

$L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of pseudo-differential operators on graded Lie groups

In this paper we establish the $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates for global pseudo-differential operators on graded Lie groups. We provide both necessary and sufficient conditions for the $L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of pseudo-differential operators associated with the global Hörmander symbol classes on graded Lie groups, within the range $1<p\leq 2 \leq q<\infty$. Additionally, we present a sufficient condition for the $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates of pseudo-differential operators within the range $1<p\leq q\leq 2$ or $2\leq p\leq q<\infty$. The proofs rely on estimates of the Riesz and Bessel potentials associated with Rockland operators, along with previously established results on $L^p$-boundedness of global pseudo-differential operators on graded Lie groups. Notably, as a byproduct, we also establish the sharpness of the Sobolev embedding theorem for the inhomogeneous Sobolev spaces on graded Lie groups.
