Lie symmetries for systems of evolution equations

The Lie symmetries for a class of systems of evolution equations are studied. The evolution equations are defined in a bimetric space with two Riemannian metrics corresponding to the space of the independent and dependent variables of the differential equations. The exact relation of the Lie symmetries with the collineations of the bimetric space is determined

Lie and Noether point Symmetries for a Class of Nonautonomous Dynamical Systems

We prove two general theorems which determine the Lie and the Noether point symmetries for the equations of motion of a dynamical system which moves in a general Riemannian space under the action of a time dependent potential $W(t,x)=ω(t)V(x)$. We apply the theorems to the case of a time dependent central potential and the harmonic oscillator and determine all Lie and Noether point symmetries. Finally we prove that these theorems also apply to the case of a dynamical system with linear dumping and study two examples.

Exact solution of the Einstein-Skyrme model in a Kantowski-Sachs spacetime

We consider a Skyrme fluid with a constant radial profile in locally rotational Kantowski-Sachs spacetime. The Skyrme fluid is an anisotropic fluid with zero heat flux and with an equation of state parameter $w_{S}$ that $\left\vert w_{s}\right\vert \leq\frac{1}{3}$. From the Einstein field equations we define the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. For the last equation we perform a Lie symmetry classification and we determine the invariant solutions for the wavefunction of the model. Moreover from the Lie symmetries of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation we construct Noetherian conservation laws for the field equations which we use in order to write the solution in closed form. We show that all pf the cosmological parameters are expressed in terms of the scale factor of the two dimensional sphere of the Kantowski-Sachs spacetime. Finally from the application of Noether's theorem for the Wheeler-DeWitt equation we derive conservation laws for the wavefunction of the universe.

Comment on "A study of phantom scalar field cosmology using Lie and Noether symmetries" [Int. J. Mod. Phys. D 25 (2016) 1650051]

We show that the recent results of \ [Int. J. Mod. Phys. D 25 (2016) 1650051] on the application of Lie/Noether symmetries in scalar field cosmology are well-known in the literature while the problem could have been solved easily under a coordinate transformation. That follows from the property, that the admitted group of invariant transformations of dynamical system is independent on the coordinate system.

Lie and Noether point symmetries of a class of quasilinear systems of second-order differential equations

We study the Lie and Noether point symmetries of a class of systems of second-order differential equations with $n$ independent and $m$ dependent variables ($n\times m$ systems). We solve the symmetry conditions in a geometric way and determine the general form of the symmetry vector and of the Noetherian conservation laws. We prove that the point symmetries are generated by the collineations of two (pseudo)metrics, which are defined in the spaces of independent and dependent variables. We demonstrate the general results in two special cases (a) a system of $m$ coupled Laplace equations and (b) the Klein-Gordon equation of a particle in the context of Generalized Uncertainty Principle. In the second case we determine the complete invariant group of point transformations, and we apply the Lie invariants in order to find invariant solutions of the wave function for a spin-$0$ particle in the two dimensional hyperbolic space.

Classical and Quantum Solutions in Brans-Dicke Cosmology with a Perfect Fluid

We consider the application of group invariant transformations in order to constrain a flat isotropic and homogeneous cosmological model, containing of a Brans-Dicke scalar field and a perfect fluid with a constant equation of state parameter $w$, where the latter is not interacting with the scalar field in the gravitational action integral. The requirement that the Wheeler-DeWitt equation be invariant under one-parameter point transformations provides us with two families of power-law potentials for the Brans-Dicke field, in which the powers are functions of the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω_{BD}$ and the parameter $w$. The existence of the Lie symmetry in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation is equivalent to the existence of a conserved quantity in field equations and with oscillatory terms in the wavefunction of the universe. This enables us to solve the field equations. For a specific value of the conserved quantity, we find a closed-form solution for the Hubble factor, which is equivalent to a cosmological model in general relativity containing two perfect fluids. This provides us with different models for specific values of the parameters $ω_{BD},$ and $w$. Finally, the results hold for the specific case where the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω_{BD}$ is zero, that is, for the O'Hanlon massive dilaton theory, and consequently for $f\left( R\right) $ gravity in the metric formalism.

Dynamical analysis in scalar field cosmology

We give a general method to find exact cosmological solutions for scalar-field dark energy in the presence of perfect fluids. We use the existence of invariant transformations for the Wheeler De Witt (WdW) equation. We show that the existence of a point transformation under which the WdW equation is invariant is equivalent to the existence of conservation laws for the field equations, which indicates the existence of analytical solutions. We extend previous work by providing exact solutions for the Hubble parameter and the effective dark-energy equation of state parameter for cosmologies containing a combination of perfect fluid and a scalar field whose self-interaction potential is a power of hyperbolic functions. We find solutions explicitly when the perfect fluid is radiation or cold dark matter and determine the effects of non-zero spatial curvature. Using the Planck 2015 data, we determine the evolution of the effective equation of state of the dark energy. Finally, we study the global dynamics using dimensionless variables. We find that if the current cosmological model is Liouville integrable (admits conservation laws) then there is a unique stable point which describes the de-Sitter phase of the universe.

Symmetries of second-order PDEs and conformal Killing vectors

We study the Lie point symmetries of a general class of partial differential equations (PDE) of second order. An equation from this class naturally defines a second-order symmetric tensor (metric). In the case the PDE is linear on the first derivatives we show that the Lie point symmetries are given by the conformal algebra of the metric modulo a constraint involving the linear part of the PDE. Important elements in this class are the Klein--Gordon equation and the Laplace equation. We apply the general results and determine the Lie point symmetries of these equations in various general classes of Riemannian spaces. Finally we study the type II\ hidden symmetries of the wave equation in a Riemannian space with a Lorenzian metric.

Exact solutions of Bianchi I spacetimes which admit Conformal Killing vectors

We develop a new method in order to classify the Bianchi I spacetimes which admit conformal Killing vectors (CKV). The method is based on two propositions which relate the CKVs of 1+(n-1) decomposable Riemannian spaces with the CKVs of the (n-1) subspace and show that if 1+(n-1) space is conformally flat then the (n-1) spacetime is maximally symmetric. The method is used to study the conformal algebra of the Kasner spacetime and other less known Bianchi type I matter solutions of General Relativity.

Dynamical symmetries and observational constraints in scalar field cosmology

We propose to use dynamical symmetries of the field equations, in order to classify the dark energy models in the context of scalar field (quintessence or phantom) FLRW cosmologies. Practically, symmetries provide a useful mathematical tool in physical problems since they can be used to simplify a given system of differential equations as well as to determine the integrability of the physical system. The requirement that the field equations admit dynamical symmetries results in two potentials one of which is the well known Unified Dark Matter (UDM) potential and another new potential. For each hyperbolic potential we obtain the corresponding analytic solution of the field equations. The proposed analysis suggests that the requirement of the contact symmetry appears to be very competitive to other independent tests used to probe the functional form of a given potential and thus the associated nature of dark energy. Finally, in order to test the viability of the above scalar field models we perform a joint likelihood analysis using some of the latest cosmological data.

Two scalar field cosmology: Conservation laws and exact solutions

We consider the two scalar field cosmology in a FRW spatially flat spacetime where the scalar fields interact both in the kinetic part and the potential. We apply the Noether point symmetries in order to define the interaction of the scalar fields. We use the point symmetries in order to write the field equations in the normal coordinates and we find that the Lagrangian of the field equations which admits at least three Noether point symmetries describes linear Newtonian systems. Furthermore, by using the corresponding conservation laws we find exact solutions of the field equations. Finally, we generalize our results to the case of N scalar fields interacting both in their potential and their kinematic part in a flat FRW background.

The geometric origin of Lie point symmetries of the Schrödinger and the Klein Gordon equations

We determine the Lie point symmetries of the Schrödinger and the Klein Gordon equations in a general Riemannian space. It is shown that these symmetries are related with the homothetic and the conformal algebra of the metric of the space respectively. We consider the kinematic metric defined by the classical Lagrangian and show how the Lie point symmetries of the Schrödinger equation and the Klein Gordon equation are related with the Noether point symmetries of this Lagrangian. The general results are applied to two practical problems a. The classification of all two and three dimensional potentials in a Euclidian space for which the Schrödinger equation and the Klein Gordon equation admit Lie point symmetries and b. The application of Lie point symmetries of the Klein Gordon equation in the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime and the determination of the metric by means of conformally related Lagrangians.

The reduction of Laplace equation in certain Riemannian spaces and the resulting Type II hidden symmetries

We prove a general theorem which allows the determination of Lie symmetries of Laplace equation in a general Riemannian space using the conformal group of the space. Algebraic computing is not necessary. We apply the theorem in the study of the reduction of Laplace equation in certain classes of Riemannian spaces which admit a gradient Killing vector, a gradient Homothetic vector and a special Conformal Killing vector. In each reduction we identify the source of Type II hidden symmetries. We find that in general the Type II hidden symmetries of Laplace equation are directly related to the transition of the CKVs from the space where the original equation is defined to the space where the reduced equation resides. In particular we consider the reduction of Laplace equation (i.e. the wave equation) in Minkowski space and obtain the results of all previous studies in a straightforward manner. We consider the reduction of Laplace equation in spaces which admit Lie point symmetries generated from a non gradient HV and a proper CKV and we show that the reduction with these vectors does not produce Type II hidden symmetries. We apply the results to General Relativity and consider the reduction of Laplace equation in locally rotational symmetric space times (LRS) and in algebraically special vacuum solutions of Einstein's equations which admit a homothetic algebra acting simply transitively. In each case we determine the Type II hidden symmetries.

Conformally related metrics and Lagrangians and their physical interpretation in cosmology

Conformally related metrics and Lagrangians are considered in the context of scalar-tensor gravity cosmology. After the discussion of the problem, we pose a lemma in which we show that the field equations of two conformally related Lagrangians are also conformally related if and only if the corresponding Hamiltonian vanishes. Then we prove that to every non-minimally coupled scalar field, we may associate a unique minimally coupled scalar field in a conformally related space with an appropriate potential. The latter result implies that the field equations of a non-minimally coupled scalar field are the same at the conformal level with the field equations of the minimally coupled scalar field. This fact is relevant in order to select physical variables among conformally equivalent systems. Finally, we find that the above propositions can be extended to a general Riemannian space of n-dimensions.

Type II hidden symmetries for the homogeneous heat equation in some general classes of Riemannian spaces

We study the reduction of the heat equation in Riemannian spaces which admit a gradient Killing vector, a gradient homothetic vector and in Petrov Type D,N,II and Type III space-times. In each reduction we identify the source of the Type II hidden symmetries. More specifically we find that a) If we reduce the heat equation by the symmetries generated by the gradient KV the reduced equation is a linear heat equation in the nondecomposable space. b) If we reduce the heat equation via the symmetries generated by the gradient HV the reduced equation is a Laplace equation for an appropriate metric. In this case the Type II hidden symmetries are generated from the proper CKVs. c) In the Petrov spacetimes the reduction of the heat equation by the symmetry generated from the nongradient HV gives PDEs which inherit the Lie symmetries hence no Type II hidden symmetries appear. We apply the general results to cases in which the initial metric is specified. We consider the case that the irreducible part of the decomposed space is a space of constant nonvanishing curvature and the case of the spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space time used in Cosmology. In each case we give explicitly the Type II hidden symmetries provided they exist.

Geometrization of Lie and Noether symmetries with applications in Cosmology

We derive the Lie and the Noether conditions for the equations of motion of a dynamical system in a $n-$dimensional Riemannian space. We solve these conditions in the sense that we express the symmetry generating vectors in terms of the special projective and the homothetic vectors of the space. Therefore the Lie and the Noether symmetries for these equations are geometric symmetries or, equivalently, the geometry of the space is modulating the motion of dynamical systems in that space. We give two theorems which contain all the necessary conditions which allow one to determine the Lie and the Noether symmetries of a specific dynamical system in a given Riemannian space. We apply the theorems to various interesting situations covering Newtonian 2d and 3d systems as well as dynamical systems in cosmology.

Lie point symmetries of a general class of PDEs: The heat equation

We give two theorems which show that the Lie point and the Noether symmetries of a second-order ordinary differential equation of the form (D/(Ds))(((Dx^{i}(s))/(Ds)))=F(x^{i}(s),x^{j}(s)) are subalgebras of the special projective and the homothetic algebra of the space respectively. We examine the possible extension of this result to partial differential equations (PDE) of the form A^{ij}u_{ij}-F(x^{i},u,u_{i})=0 where u(x^{i}) and u_{ij} stands for the second partial derivative. We find that if the coefficients A^{ij} are independent of u(x^{i}) then the Lie point symmetries of the PDE form a subgroup of the conformal symmetries of the metric defined by the coefficients A^{ij}. We specialize the study to linear forms of F(x^{i},u,u_{i}) and write the Lie symmetry conditions for this case. We apply this result to two cases. The wave equation in an inhomogeneous medium for which we derive the Lie symmetry vectors and check our results with those in the literature. Subsequently we consider the heat equation with a flux in an n-dimensional Riemannian space and show that the Lie symmetry algebra is a subalgebra of the homothetic algebra of the space. We discuss this result in the case of de Sitter space time and in flat space.
