The asymmetric five vertex model on a rectangle

We derive a determinantal expression for the inhomogeneous asymmetric five vertex model in a rectangular geometry with arbitrary boundary conditions at the bottom and top. Standard non-intersecting lattice path, or free fermion, approaches are not applicable and the determinantal form thus is not immediate.

Inhomogeneous $q$-Whittaker Polynomials I: Duality and Expansions

We introduce a new family of symmetric polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{(\mathbf{u},\mathbf{v})}_{\lambda}$ arising from exactly solvable lattice models associated with the quantised loop algebra $\mathcal{U}_{q}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2}[z^\pm])$. The polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{(\mathbf{u},\mathbf{v})}_{\lambda}$ unify $q$-Whittaker polynomials, inhomogeneous $q$-Whittaker polynomials, Grothendieck polynomials and their duals. Using Yang--Baxter equation, we derive Cauchy identities and combinatorial formulas for the transition coefficients.

Free boundary q-Whittaker and Hall-Littlewood processes

We study the free boundary $q$-Whittaker and Hall--Littlewood processes, two probability measures on sequences of partitions. We prove that a certain observable of the free boundary $q$-Whittaker process exhibits a $(q,t)$ symmetry after a random shift, generalizing a previous result of Imamura, Mucciconi, and Sasamoto, and an extension of that result due to the first author. Our proof is completely different, and as part of our proof, we find contour integral formulas for the free boundary $q$-Whittaker process. We also show a matching between certain observables in the free boundary Hall--Littlewood process and a quasi-open six vertex model, and explain how work of Finn and Vanicat gives an evaluation of a bounded sum over skew Hall--Littlewood functions as a rectangular Koornwinder polynomial.

Pfaffian Transition Probability and Correlation Kernel of TASEP in Half-space

We present the transition probability for the asymmetric simple exclusion process on the half-space for general initial conditions and particle insertion at the boundary. In the limit of total asymmetry, where particles only jump to the right, we show that the transition probability reduces to a single Pfaffian for a large class of initial conditions. We further derive a Fredholm Pfaffian formula for the multipoint distribution of the totally asymmetric model conditioned on the number of particles in the system using a connection with a Pfaffian point process supported on Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns.

Exploring Immersive Social-Physical Interaction with Virtual Characters through Coordinated Robotic Encountered-Type Contact

This work presents novel robot-mediated immersive experiences enabled by an encountered-type haptic display (ETHD) that introduces direct physical contact in virtual environments. We focus on social-physical interactions, a class of interaction associated with meaningful human outcomes in prior human-robot interaction (HRI) research. We explore the implementation of this interaction paradigm in immersive virtual environments through an object handover, fist bump, and high five with a virtual character. Extending this HRI paradigm into immersive environments enables the study of how physically grounded robotic contact and virtual augmentation jointly shape these novel social-physical interaction experiences. To support this investigation, we introduce ETHOS (Encountered-Type Haptics for On-demand Social interaction), an experimental platform integrating a torque-controlled manipulator and interchangeable props with a headset-mediated virtual experience. ETHOS enables co-located physical interaction through marker-based physical-virtual registration while concealing the robot behind the virtual environment, decoupling contact from visible robot embodiment. Both technical characterization, through spatial alignment and interaction latency tests, and experiential evaluation, through a 55 participant user study, were completed. Overall, the findings demonstrate the feasibility and experiential value of robot-mediated social-physical interaction in VR and motivate further development of dynamic encountered-type approaches for immersive HRI.

Structure constants for spin Hall--Littlewood functions

We provide a combinatorial formula for the structure constants of spin Hall--Littlewood functions. This is achieved by representing these functions and the structure constants as the partition function of a lattice model and applying the underlying Yang--Baxter equation. Our combinatorial expression is in terms of generalised honeycombs; the latter were introduced by Knutson and Tao for ordinary Littlewood--Richardson coefficients and applied to the computation of Hall polynomials by Zinn--Justin.

Rational symmetric functions from the Izergin-Korepin 19-vertex model

Starting from the Izergin-Korepin 19-vertex model in the quadrant, we introduce two families of rational multivariate functions $F_S$ and $G_S$; these are in direct analogy with functions introduced by Borodin in the context of the higher-spin 6-vertex model in the quadrant. We prove that $F_S(x_1,\dots,x_N;z)$ and $G_S(y_1,\dots,y_M;z)$ are symmetric functions in their alphabets $(x_1,\dots,x_N)$ and $(y_1,\dots,y_M)$, and pair together to yield a Cauchy identity. Both properties are consequences of the Yang-Baxter equation of the model. We show that, in an appropriate limit of the spectral parameters $z$, $F_S$ tends to a stable symmetric function denoted $H_S$. This leads to a simplified version of the Cauchy identity with a fully factorized kernel, and suggests self-duality of the functions $H_S$. We obtain a symmetrization formula for the function $F_S(x_1,\dots,x_N;z)$, which exhibits its symmetry in $(x_1,\dots,x_N)$. In contrast to the 6-vertex model, where $F^{6{\rm V}}_S(x_1,\dots,x_N;z)$ is cast as a sum over the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_N$, the symmetrization formula in the 19-vertex model is over a larger set of objects that we define; we call these objects 2-permutations. As a byproduct of the proof of our symmetrization formula, we obtain explicit formulas for the monodromy matrix elements of the 19-vertex model in a basis that renders them totally spatially symmetric.

Symmetric functions from the six-vertex model in half-space

We study the stochastic six-vertex model in half-space with generic integrable boundary weights, and define two families of multivariate rational symmetric functions. Using commutation relations between double-row operators, we prove a skew Cauchy identity of these functions. In a certain degeneration of the right-hand side of the Cauchy identity we obtain the partition function of the six-vertex model in a half-quadrant, and give a Pfaffian formula for this quantity. The Pfaffian is a direct generalization of a formula obtained by Kuperberg in his work on symmetry classes of alternating-sign matrices. One of our families of symmetric functions admits an integral (sum over residues) formula, and we use this to conjecture an orthogonality property of the dual family. We conclude by studying the reduction of our integral formula to transition probabilities of the (initially empty) asymmetric simple exclusion process on the half-line.

Periodic $q$-Whittaker and Hall-Littlewood processes

We study the periodic $q$-Whittaker and Hall-Littlewood processes, two probability measures on sequences of partitions. We prove that a certain observable of the periodic $q$-Whittaker process exhibits a $(q,u)$ symmetry after a random shift, generalizing a previous result of Imamura, Mucciconi, and Sasamoto who showed a matching between the periodic Schur and $q$-Whittaker measures, and also give a vertex model formulation of their result. As part of our proof of the $(q,u)$ symmetry, we obtain contour integral formulas for both the periodic $q$-Whittaker and Hall-Littlewood processes. We also show a matching between certain observables in the periodic Hall-Littlewood process and in a quasi-periodic stochastic six vertex model after a suitable random shift, and discuss a limit to the stationary periodic stochastic six vertex model.

Coloured corner processes from asymptotics of LLT polynomials

We consider probability measures arising from the Cauchy summation identity for the LLT (Lascoux--Leclerc--Thibon) symmetric polynomials of rank $n \geq 1$. We study the asymptotic behaviour of these measures as one of the two sets of polynomials in the Cauchy identity stays fixed, while the other one grows to infinity. At $n=1$, this corresponds to an analogous limit of the Schur process, which is known to be given by the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) corners process. Our main result states that, for $n>1$, our measures asymptotically split into two parts: a continuous one and a discrete one. The continuous part is a product of $n$ GUE corners processes; the discrete part is an explicit finite distribution on interlacing $n$-colourings of $n$ interlacing triangles, which has weights that are rational functions in the LLT parameter $q$. The latter distribution has a number of interesting (partly conjectural) combinatorial properties, such as $q$-nonnegativity and enumerative phenomena underlying its support. Our main tools are two different representations of the LLT polynomials, one as partition functions of a fermionic lattice model of rank $n$, and the other as finite-dimensional contour integrals, which were recently obtained in arXiv:2012.02376, arXiv:2101.01605.

Transition probability and total crossing events in the multi-species asymmetric exclusion process

We present explicit formulas for total crossing events in the multi-species asymmetric exclusion process ($r$-ASEP) with underlying $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{r+1})$ symmetry. In the case of the two-species TASEP these can be derived using an explicit expression for the general transition probability on $\mathbb{Z}$ in terms of a multiple contour integral derived from a nested Bethe ansatz approach. For the general $r$-ASEP we employ a vertex model approach within which the probability of total crossing can be derived from partial symmetrization of an explicit high rank rainbow partition function. In the case of $r$-TASEP, the total crossing probability can be show to reduce to a multiple integral over the product of $r$ determinants. For $2$-TASEP we additionally derive convenient formulas for cumulative total crossing probabilities using Bernoulli-step initial conditions for particles of type 2 and type 1 respectively.

Free Fermion Six Vertex Model: Symmetric Functions and Random Domino Tilings

Our work deals with symmetric rational functions and probabilistic models based on the fully inhomogeneous six vertex (ice type) model satisfying the free fermion condition. Two families of symmetric rational functions $F_\lambda,G_\lambda$ are defined as certain partition functions of the six vertex model, with variables corresponding to row rapidities, and the labeling signatures $\lambda=(\lambda_1\ge \ldots\ge \lambda_N)\in \mathbb{Z}^N$ encoding boundary conditions. These symmetric functions generalize Schur symmetric polynomials, as well as some of their variations, such as factorial and supersymmetric Schur polynomials. Cauchy type summation identities for $F_\lambda,G_\lambda$ and their skew counterparts follow from the Yang-Baxter equation. Using algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain a double alternant type formula for $F_\lambda$ and a Sergeev-Pragacz type formula for $G_\lambda$. In the spirit of the theory of Schur processes, we define probability measures on sequences of signatures with probability weights proportional to products of our symmetric functions. We show that these measures can be viewed as determinantal point processes, and we express their correlation kernels in a double contour integral form. We present two proofs: The first is a direct computation of Eynard-Mehta type, and the second uses non-standard, inhomogeneous versions of fermionic operators in a Fock space coming from the algebraic Bethe Ansatz for the six vertex model. We also interpret our determinantal processes as random domino tilings of a half-strip with inhomogeneous domino weights. In the bulk, we show that the lattice asymptotic behavior of such domino tilings is described by a new determinantal point process on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, which can be viewed as an doubly-inhomogeneous generalization of the extended discrete sine process.

Deformed Polynuclear Growth in $(1+1)$ Dimensions

We introduce and study a one parameter deformation of the polynuclear growth (PNG) in $(1+1)$-dimensions, which we call the $t$-PNG model. It is defined by requiring that, when two expanding islands merge, with probability $t$ they sprout another island on top of the merging location. At $t=0$, this becomes the standard (non-deformed) PNG model that, in the droplet geometry, can be reformulated through longest increasing subsequences of uniformly random permutations or through an algorithm known as patience sorting. In terms of the latter, the $t$-PNG model allows errors to occur in the sorting algorithm with probability $t$. We prove that the $t$-PNG model exhibits one-point Tracy-Widom GUE asymptotics at large times for any fixed $t\in [0,1)$, and one-point convergence to the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation as $t$ tends to $1$. We further construct distributions for an external source that are likely to induce Baik-Ben Arous-Peche type phase transitions. The proofs are based on solvable stochastic vertex models and their connection to the determinantal point processes arising from Schur measures on partitions.

Colored Fermionic Vertex Models and Symmetric Functions

In this text we introduce and analyze families of symmetric functions arising as partition functions for colored fermionic vertex models associated with the quantized affine Lie superalgebra $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$. We establish various combinatorial results for these vertex models and symmetric functions, which include the following. (1) We apply the fusion procedure to the fundamental $R$-matrix for $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$ to obtain an explicit family of vertex weights satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. (2) We define families of symmetric functions as partition functions for colored, fermionic vertex models under these fused weights. We further establish several combinatorial properties for these symmetric functions, such as branching rules and Cauchy identities. (3) We show that the Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon (LLT) polynomials arise as special cases of these symmetric functions. This enables us to show both old and new properties about the LLT polynomials, including Cauchy identities, contour integral formulas, stability properties, and branching rules under a certain family of plethystic transformations. (4) A different special case of our symmetric functions gives rise to a new family of polynomials called factorial LLT polynomials. We show they generalize the LLT polynomials, while also satisfying a vanishing condition reminiscent of that satisfied by the factorial Schur functions. (5) By considering our vertex model on a cylinder, we obtain fermionic partition function formulas for both the symmetric and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. (6) We prove combinatorial formulas for the coefficients of the LLT polynomials when expanded in the modified Hall-Littlewood basis, as partition functions for a $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (2 | n) \big)$ vertex model.

Graph-like Distributions and Types in Ultrapowers

We study types that appear in ultraproducts that have distributions which can be thought of as a sequence of graphs. The property of having distributions that are captured by graphs is motivated by a commonality of $\mathrm{SOP}_2$-types and types corresponding to pre-cuts in ultrapowers of linear orders. Through this study, we come to a simple set-theoretic description of the distributions for these types and to a new description of good ultrafilters in terms of the difference between "small" external complete subgraphs and internal complete subgraphs in ultraproducts of particular families of finite graphs arising from the comparability relation on the complete binary tree or the intersection of intervals in an infinite linear order.

Observables of coloured stochastic vertex models and their polymer limits

In the context of the coloured stochastic vertex model in a quadrant, we identify a family of observables whose averages are given by explicit contour integrals. The observables are certain linear combinations of $q$-moments of the coloured height functions of the model. In a polymer limit, this yields integral representations for moments of partition functions of strict-weak, semi-discrete Brownian, and continuum Brownian polymers with varying beginning and ending points of the polymers.

Shift-invariance for vertex models and polymers

We establish a symmetry in a variety of integrable stochastic systems: Certain multi-point distributions of natural observables are unchanged under a shift of a subset of observation points. The property holds for stochastic vertex models, (1+1)d directed polymers in random media, last passage percolation, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, and the Airy sheet. In each instance it leads to computations of previously inaccessible joint distributions. The proofs rely on a combination of the Yang-Baxter integrability of the inhomogeneous colored stochastic six-vertex model and Lagrange interpolation. We also show that a simplified (Gaussian) version of our theorems is related to the invariance in law of the local time of the Brownian bridge under the shift of the observation level.

Nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials via integrable vertex models

Starting from an integrable rank-$n$ vertex model, we construct an explicit family of partition functions indexed by compositions $\mu = (\mu_1,\dots,\mu_n)$. Using the Yang-Baxter algebra of the model and a certain rotation operation that acts on our partition functions, we show that they are eigenfunctions of the Cherednik-Dunkl operators $Y_i$ for all $1 \leq i \leq n$, and are thus equal to nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials $E_{\mu}$. Our partition functions have the combinatorial interpretation of ensembles of coloured lattice paths which traverse a cylinder. Applying a simple bijection to such path ensembles, we show how to recover the well-known combinatorial formula for $E_{\mu}$ due to Haglund-Haiman-Loehr.
