Hydrodynamization in kinetic theory: Transient modes and the gradient expansion

We explore the transition to hydrodynamics in a weakly-coupled model of quark-gluon plasma given by kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation with conformal symmetry. We demonstrate that the gradient expansion in this model has a vanishing radius of convergence due to the presence of a transient (nonhydrodynamic) mode, in a way similar to results obtained earlier in strongly-coupled gauge theories. This suggests that the mechanism by which hydrodynamic behaviour emerges is the same, which we further corroborate by a novel comparison between solutions of different weakly and strongly coupled models. However, in contrast with other known cases, we find that not all the singularities of the analytic continuation of the Borel transform of the gradient expansion correspond to transient excitations of the microscopic system: some of them reflect analytic properties of the kinetic equation when the proper time is continued to complex values.

New theories of relativistic hydrodynamics in the LHC era

The success of relativistic hydrodynamics as an essential part of the phenomenological description of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC has motivated a significant body of theoretical work concerning its fundamental aspects. Our review presents these developments from the perspective of the underlying microscopic physics, using the language of quantum field theory, relativistic kinetic theory, and holography. We discuss the gradient expansion, the phenomenon of hydrodynamization, as well as several models of hydrodynamic evolution equations, highlighting the interplay between collective long-lived and transient modes in relativistic matter. Our aim to provide a unified presentation of this vast subject -- which is naturally expressed in diverse mathematical languages -- has also led us to include several new results on the large-order behaviour of the hydrodynamic gradient~expansion.

Small systems and regulator dependence in relativistic hydrodynamics

Consistent theories of hydrodynamics necessarily include nonhydrodynamic modes, which can be viewed as a regulator necessary to ensure causality. Under many circumstances the choice of regulator is not relevant, but this is not always the case. In particular, for sufficiently small systems (such as those arising in pA or pp collisions) such dependence may be inevitable. We address this issue in the context of the modern version of Müller-Israel-Stewart theory of relativistic hydrodynamics. In this case, by demanding that the nonhydrodynamic modes be subdominant, we find that regulator dependence becomes inevitable only for multiplicities $dN/dY$ of the order of a few. This conclusion supports earlier studies based on hydrodynamic simulations of small systems, at the same time providing a simple physical picture of how hydrodynamics can be reliable even in such seemingly extreme conditions.

Hydrodynamics Beyond the Gradient Expansion: Resurgence and Resummation

Consistent formulations of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics involve short lived modes, leading to asymptotic rather than convergent gradient expansions. In this Letter we consider the Mueller-Israel-Stewart theory applied to a longitudinally expanding quark-gluon plasma system and identify hydrodynamics as a universal attractor without invoking the gradient expansion. We give strong evidence for the existence of this attractor and then show that it can be recovered from the divergent gradient expansion by Borel summation. This requires careful accounting for the short-lived modes which leads to an intricate mathematical structure known from the theory of resurgence.

Linearized nonequilibrium dynamics in nonconformal plasma

We investigate the behaviour of the lowest nonhydrodynamic modes in a class of holographic models which exhibit an equation of state closely mimicking the one determined from lattice QCD. We calculate the lowest quasinormal mode frequencies for a range of scalar self-interaction potentials and find that the damping of the quasinormal modes at the phase transition/crossover falls off by a factor of around two from conformality after factoring out standard conformal temperature dependence. The damping encoded in the imaginary part of the frequencies turns out to be correlated with the speed of sound and is basically independent of the UV details of the model. We also find that the dynamics of the nonhydrodynamic degrees of freedom remains ultralocal, even to a higher degree, as we deviate from conformality. These results indicate that the role of nonhydrodynamic degrees of freedom in the vicinity of the crossover transition may be enhanced.

Statistics of thermalization in Bjorken Flow

The apparent early thermalization of quark-gluon plasma produced at RHIC and LHC has motivated a number of studies of strongly coupled ${\mathcal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Here we present the results of numerical simulations of Bjorken flow aimed at establishing typical features of the dynamics. This is done by evolving a large number of far from equilibrium initial states well into the hydrodynamic regime. The results strongly suggest that early thermalization is generic in this theory, taking place at proper times around $0.6$ in units of inverse local temperature. We also find that the scale which determines the rate of hydrodynamic cooling is linearly correlated with the entropy of initial states defined by the area of the apparent horizon in the dual geometry. Our results also suggest that entropy production during the hydrodynamic stage of evolution is not negligible despite the low value of $η/s$.

Coupling hydrodynamics to nonequilibrium degrees of freedom in strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma

Relativistic hydrodynamics simulations of quark-gluon plasma play a pivotal role in our understanding of heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. They are based on a phenomenological description due to Mueller, Israel, Stewart (MIS) and others, which incorporates viscous effects and ensures a well-posed initial value problem. Focusing on the case of conformal plasma we propose a generalization which includes, in addition, the dynamics of the least damped far-from-equilibrium degree of freedom found in strongly coupled plasmas through the AdS/CFT correspondence. We formulate new evolution equations for general flows and then test them in the case of N=4 super Yang-Mills plasma by comparing their solutions alongside solutions of MIS theory with numerical computations of isotropization and boost-invariant flow based on holography. In these tests the new equations reproduce the results of MIS theory when initialized close to the hydrodynamic stage of evolution, but give a more accurate description of the dynamics when initial conditions are set in the pre-equilibrium regime.

On the gravity dual of strongly coupled charged plasma

Locally asymptotically AdS solutions of Einstein equations coupled with a vector field with a weakly curved boundary metric are found within the fluid-gravity gradient expansion up to second order in gradients. This geometry is dual to 1+3 dimensional hydrodynamics with a conserved current in a weakly curved background. The causal structure of the bulk geometry is determined and it is shown that the black brane singularity is shielded by an event horizon.

Entropy currents from holography in hydrodynamics with charge

The holographic interpretation of the hydrodynamic entropy current is developed for the case of hydrodynamics with a conserved charge. This is carried out within a framework developed in earlier work, which showed how to associate entropy currents with horizons in the dual geometry. The entropy current defined by the event horizon in the dual bulk geometry is calculated. It is also shown that to second order in the gradient expansion the dual geometry possesses a unique Weyl-invariant apparent horizon which also defines an admissable entropy current. At first order both currents coincide with the result obtained on the basis of a purely hydrodynamic analysis.

Black Brane Entropy and Hydrodynamics

A generalization of entropy to near-equilibrium phenomena is provided by the notion of a hydrodynamic entropy current. Recent advances in holography have lead to the formulation of fluid-gravity duality, a remarkable connection between the hydrodynamics of certain strongly coupled media and dynamics of higher dimensional black holes. This Letter introduces a correspondence between phenomenologically defined entropy currents in relativistic hydrodynamics and quasilocal horizons of near-equilibrium black objects in a dual gravitational description. A general formula is given, expressing the divergence of the entropy current in terms of geometric objects which appear naturally in the gravity dual geometry. The proposed definition is explicitly covariant with respect to boundary diffeomorphisms and reproduces known results when evaluated for the event horizon.

On the apparent horizon in fluid-gravity duality

This article develops a computational framework for determining the location of boundary-covariant apparent horizons in the geometry of conformal fluid-gravity duality in arbitrary dimensions. In particular, it is shown up to second order and conjectured to hold to all orders in the gradient expansion that there is a unique apparent horizon which is covariantly expressible in terms of fluid velocity, temperature and boundary metric. This leads to the first explicit example of an entropy current defined by an apparent horizon and opens the possibility that in the near-equilibrium regime there is preferred foliation of apparent horizons for black holes in asymptotically-AdS spacetimes.

Initial conditions for small-field inflation

Small-field inflation typically requires rather special initial conditions to commence. It is proposed that in models where the inflaton is an axionlike field, with a periodic contribution to the potential, there is a possibility of significantly enhancing the chances of inflation without any fine-tuning of initial conditions and with no additional fine-tuning of the dynamics beyond what is needed for the potential to support inflation in the first place.

Black brane entropy and hydrodynamics: the boost-invariant case

The framework of slowly evolving horizons is generalized to the case of black branes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces in arbitrary dimensions. The results are used to analyze the behavior of both event and apparent horizons in the gravity dual to boost-invariant flow. These considerations are motivated by the fact that at second order in the gradient expansion the hydrodynamic entropy current in the dual Yang-Mills theory appears to contain an ambiguity. This ambiguity, in the case of boost-invariant flow, is linked with a similar freedom on the gravity side. This leads to a phenomenological definition of the entropy of black branes. Some insights on fluid/gravity duality and the definition of entropy in a time-dependent setting are elucidated.

Consistent holographic description of boost-invariant plasma

Prior attempts to construct the gravity dual of boost-invariant flow of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills gauge theory plasma suffered from apparent curvature singularities in the late time expansion. This Letter shows how these problems can be resolved by a different choice of expansion parameter. The calculations presented correctly reproduce the plasma energy-momentum tensor within the framework of second order viscous hydrodynamics.

Inflation in DBI models with constant gamma

Dirac-Born-Infeld scalar field theories which appear in the context of inflation in string theory in general have a field dependent speed of sound. It is however possible to write down DBI models which possess exact solutions characterized by a constant speed of sound different from unity. This requires that the potential and the effective D-brane tension appearing in a DBI action have to be related in a specific way. This paper describes such models in general and presents some examples with a constant speed of sound $c_s<1$ for which the spectrum of scalar perturbations can be found analytically without resorting to the slow roll approximation.

New Solutions of the Inflationary Flow Equations

The inflationary flow equations are a frequently used method of surveying the space of inflationary models. In these applications the infinite hierarchy of differential equations is truncated in a way which has been shown to be equivalent to restricting the set of models considered to those characterized by polynomial inflaton potentials. This paper explores a different method of solving the flow equations, which does not truncate the hierarchy and in consequence covers a much wider class of models while retaining the practical usability of the standard approach.

A Consistency Relation for Power Law Inflation in DBI models

Brane inflation in string theory leads to a new realization of power law inflation which can give rise to significant non-gaussianity. This can happen for any throat geometry if the scalar potential is appropriate. This note presents a consistency relation connecting the running of the nonlinearity parameter characterizing the non-gaussianity and the scalar and tensor indices. The relationship is valid assuming that the throat geometry and scalar potential support power law inflation, regardless of the level of non-gaussianity.

On the Slow Roll Expansion for Brane Inflation

One possibility for identifying the inflaton in the framework of string theory is that it is a $D$-brane modulus. This option involves a specific, non-canonical form of the kinetic energy -- the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. This note investigates the applicability of the slow roll approximation in inflationary models of this type. To this end the slow roll expansion of Liddle, Parsons and Barrow is derived for the case of the DBI action. The resulting slow roll conditions augment the standard ones valid in the case of canonical kinetic terms. It is also shown that in DBI models inflation does not require that the potential dominate the energy density.
