The coherent cohomology ring of an algebraic group

Let $G$ be a group scheme of finite type over a field, and consider the cohomology ring $H^*(G)$ with coefficients in the structure sheaf. We show that $H^*(G)$ is a free module of finite rank over its component of degree 0, and is the exterior algebra of its component of degree 1. When $G$ is connected, we determine the Hopf algebra structure of $H^*(G)$.

Notions of purity and the cohomology of quiver moduli

We explore several variations of the notion of purity for the action of Frobenius on schemes defined over finite fields. In particular, we study how these notions are preserved under certain natural operations like quotients for principal bundles and also geometric quotients for reductive group actions. We then apply these results to study the cohomology of quiver moduli. We prove that a natural stratification of the space of representations of a quiver with a fixed dimension vector is equivariantly perfect and from it deduce that each of the $l$-adic cohomology groups of the quiver moduli space is strongly pure.

On automorphism groups of fiber bundles

We obtain analogues of classical results on automorphism groups of holomorphic fiber bundles, in the setting of group schemes. Also, we establish a lifting property of the connected automorphism group, for torsors under abelian varieties. These results will be applied to the study of homogeneous bundles over abelian varieties.

Homogeneous bundles over abelian varieties

We obtain characterizations and structure results for homogeneous principal bundles over abelian varieties, that generalize work of Miyanishi and Mukai on homogeneous vector bundles. For this, we rely on notions and methods of algebraic transformation groups, especially observable subgroups and anti-affine groups.

Invariant Hilbert schemes

This is a survey article on moduli of affine schemes equipped with an action of a reductive group. The emphasis is on examples and applications to the classification of spherical varieties.

On the geometry of algebraic groups and homogeneous spaces

Given a connected algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field and a G-homogeneous space X, we describe the Chow ring of G and the rational Chow ring of X, with special attention to the Picard group. Also, we investigate the Albanese and the "anti-affine" fibrations of G and X.

Counting points of homogeneous varieties over finite fields

Let $X$ be an algebraic variety over a finite field $\bF_q$, homogeneous under a linear algebraic group. We show that the number of rational points of $X$ over $\bF_{q^n}$ is a periodic polynomial function of $q^n$ with integer coefficients. Moreover, the shifted periodic polynomial function, where $q^n$ is formally replaced with $q^n + 1$, is shown to have non-negative coefficients.

Local structure of algebraic monoids

We describe the local structure of an irreducible algebraic monoid $M$ at an idempotent element $e$. When $e$ is minimal, we show that $M$ is an induced variety over the kernel $MeM$ (a homogeneous space) with fibre the two-sided stabilizer $M_e$ (a connected affine monoid having a zero element and a dense unit group). This yields the irreducibility of stabilizers and centralizers of idempotents when $M$ is normal, and criteria for normality and smoothness of an arbitrary $M$. Also, we show that $M$ is an induced variety over an abelian variety, with fiber a connected affine monoid having a dense unit group.

Vanishing theorems for Dolbeault cohomology of log homogeneous varieties

We consider a complete nonsingular variety $X$ over $\bC$, having a normal crossing divisor $D$ such that the associated logarithmic tangent bundle is generated by its global sections. We show that $H^i\big(X, L^{-1} \otimes Ω_X^j(\log D)\big) = 0$ for any nef line bundle $L$ on $X$ and all $i < j - c$, where $c$ is an explicit function of $(X,D,L)$. This implies e.g. the vanishing of $H^i(X, L \otimes Ω_X^j)$ for $L$ ample and $i > j$, and gives back a vanishing theorem of Broer when $X$ is a flag variety.

Anti-affine algebraic groups

We say that an algebraic group $G$ over a field is anti-affine if every regular function on $G$ is constant. We obtain a classification of these groups, with applications to the structure of algebraic groups in positive characteristics, and to the construction of many counterexamples to Hilbert's fourteenth problem.

Equivariant Chow ring and Chern classes of wonderful symmetric varieties of minimal rank

We describe the equivariant Chow ring of the wonderful compactification $X$ of a symmetric space of minimal rank, via restriction to the associated toric variety $Y$. Also, we show that the restrictions to $Y$ of the tangent bundle $T_X$ and its logarithmic analogue $S_X$ decompose into a direct sum of line bundles. This yields closed formulae for the equivariant Chern classes of $T_X$ and $S_X$, and, in turn, for the Chern classes of reductive groups considered by Kiritchenko.

The total coordinate ring of a wonderful variety

We study the cone of effective divisors and the total coordinate ring of wonderful varieties, with applications to their automorphism group. We show that the total coordinate ring of any spherical variety is obtained from that of the associated wonderful variety by a base change of invariant subrings.

Log homogeneous varieties

Given a complete nonsingular algebraic variety $X$ and a divisor $D$ with normal crossings, we say that $X$ is log homogeneous with boundary $D$ if the logarithmic tangent bundle $T_X(- \log D)$ is generated by its global sections. We then show that the Albanese morphism $α$ is a fibration with fibers being spherical (in particular, rational) varieties. It follows that all irreducible components of $D$ are nonsingular, and any partial intersection of them is irreducible. Also, the image of $X$ under the morphism $σ$ associated with $- K_X - D$ is a spherical variety, and the irreducible components of all fibers of $σ$ are quasiabelian varieties. Generalizing the Borel-Remmert structure theorem for homogeneous varieties, we show that the product morphism $α\times σ$ is surjective, and the irreducible components of its fibers are toric varieties. We reduce the classification of log homogeneous varieties to a problem concerning automorphism groups of spherical varieties, that we solve under an additional assumption.

The structure of normal algebraic monoids

We show that any normal algebraic monoid is an extension of an abelian variety by a normal affine algebraic monoid. This extends (and builds on) Chevalley's structure theorem for algebraic groups.

Vanishing of top equivariant Chern classes of regular embeddings

Let $G$ be a connected affine algebraic group and $X$ a regular $G$-variety (in the sense of Bifet-De Concini-Procesi) with open orbit $G/H$ and boundary divisor $D$. We show the vanishing of the $G$-equivariant Chern classes of the bundle of differential forms on $X$ with logarithmic poles along $D$, in degrees larger than $\dim(X) - \rk(G) + \rk(H)$. Our motivation comes from Gieseker's degeneration method to prove the Newstead-Ramanan conjecture on the vanishing of the top Chern classes of the moduli space of stable vector bundles on a curve.

Stable spherical varieties and their moduli

We introduce a notion of stable spherical variety which includes the spherical varieties under a reductive group $G$ and their flat equivariant degenerations. Given any projective space $\bP$ where $G$ acts linearly, we construct a moduli space for stable spherical varieties over $\bP$, that is, pairs $(X,f)$, where $X$ is a stable spherical variety and $f : X \to \bP$ is a finite equivariant morphism. This space is projective, and its irreducible components are rational. It generalizes the moduli space of pairs $(X,D)$, where $X$ is a stable toric variety and $D$ is an effective ample Cartier divisor on $X$ which contains no orbit. The equivariant automorphism group of $\bP$ acts on our moduli space; the spherical varieties over $\bP$ and their stable limits form only finitely many orbits. A variant of this moduli space gives another view to the compactifications of quotients of thin Schubert cells constructed by Kapranov and Lafforgue.
