Construction of equivariant vector bundles

Let $X$ be the wonderful compactification of a complex adjoint symmetric space $G/K$ such that $rk(G/K)=rk(G)-rk(K)$. We show how to extend equivariant vector bundles on $G/K$ to equivariant vector bundles on $X$, generated by their global sections and having trivial higher cohomology groups. This relies on a geometric construction of equivariant vector bundles in the setting of varieties with reductive group action and ``multiplicity-free'' subvarieties.

F-regularity of large Schubert varieties

Let G denote a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k and let X denote a projective G x G-equivariant embedding of G. The large Schubert varieties in X are the closures of the double cosets BgB, where B denotes a Borel subgroup of G, and g is in G. We prove that these varieties are globally F-regular in positive characteristic, resp. of globally F-regular type in characteristic 0. As a consequence, the large Schubert varieties are normal and

Toric degenerations of spherical varieties

We prove that any affine, resp. polarized projective, spherical variety admits a flat degeneration to an affine, resp. polarized projective, toric variety. Motivated by Mirror Symmetry, we give conditions for the limit toric variety to be a Gorenstein Fano, and provide many examples. We also provide an explanation for the limits as boundary points of the moduli space of stable pairs whose existence is predicted by the Minimal Model Program.

Intersection Cohomology of reductive varieties

We extend the methods developed in our earlier work to algorithmically compute the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of reductive varieties. These form a class of highly symmetric varieties that includes equivariant compactifications of reductive groups. Thereby, we extend a well-known algorithm for toric varieties.

Stable reductive varieties I: Affine varieties

The motivation of this work is to construct an analog of compactified moduli of abelian varieties and toric pairs in the case of non-commutative algebraic group G. We introduce a class of "stable reductive varieties" which contain connected reductive groups and their equivariant compactifications, and is closed under flat reduced degenerations. We classify them all, describe their degenerations, and establish a connection between these varieties and "reductive semigroups" which we also define. Finally, we construct a Hilbert scheme of embedded G-varieties by applying and generalizing a construction of Haiman and Sturmfels. The second version adds some cosmetic changes.

Stable reductive varieties II: Projective case

We construct a moduli space of stable projective pairs with a nontrivial action of a connected reductive group. These stable reductive pairs are higher-dimensional analogs of stable n-pointed curves and generalize to the non-commutative case a functorial compactification of moduli of abelian varieties, and of toric pairs. We prove that, confirming a prediction of log Minimal Program, stable reductive pairs have semi log canonical singularities. Final version, to appear in Advances of Math.

Moduli of affine schemes with reductive group action

For a connected reductive group G and a finite-dimensional G-module V, we study the invariant Hilbert scheme that parameterizes closed G-stable subschemes of V affording a fixed, multiplicity-finite representation of G in their coordinate ring. We construct an action on this invariant Hilbert scheme of a maximal torus T of G, together with an open T-stable subscheme admitting a good quotient. The fibers of the quotient map classify affine G-schemes having a prescribed categorical quotient by a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. We show that V contains only finitely many multiplicity-free G-subvarieties, up to the action of the centralizer of G in GL(V). As a consequence, there are only finitely many isomorphism classes of affine G-varieties affording a prescribed multiplicity-free representation in their coordinate ring. Final version, to appear in Journal of Algebraic Geometry

Boundedness of spherical Fano varieties

We prove that for any e>0, there exists only finitely many e-log terminal spherical Fano varieties of fixed dimension. We also introduce an invariant of a spherical subgroup H in a reductive group G which measures how nice an equivariant Fano compactification G/H there exists.

The equivariant cohomology ring of regular varieties

Let $B$ denote the upper triangular subgroup of $SL_2(C)$, $T$ its diagonal torus and $U$ its unipotent radical. A complex projective variety $Y$ endowed with an algebraic action of $B$ such that the fixed point set $Y^U$ is a single point, is called regular. Associated to any regular $B$-variety $Y$, there is a remarkable affine curve $Z_Y$ with a $T$-action which was studied by the second author. In this note, we show that the coordinate ring of $Z_Y$ is isomorphic with the equivariant cohomology ring $H_T^*(Y)$ with complex coefficients, when $Y$ is smooth or, more generally, is a $B$-stable subvariety of a regular smooth $B$-variety $X$ such that the restriction map from $H^*(X)$ to $H^*(Y)$ is surjective. This isomorphism is obtained as a refinement of the localization theorem in equivariant cohomology; it applies e.g. to Schubert varieties in flag varieties, and to the Peterson variety studied by Kostant. Another application of our isomorphism is a natural algebraic formula for the equivariant push forward.

The cone of effective one-cycles of certain G-varieties

Let X be a normal projective variety admitting an action of a semisimple group with a unique closed orbit. We construct finitely many rational curves in X, all having a common point, such that every effective one-cycle on X is rationally equivalent to a unique linear combination of these curves with non-negative rational coefficients. When X is nonsingular, these curves are projective lines, and they generate the integral Chow group of one-cycles.

Multiplicity-free subvarieties of flag varieties

Consider a flag variety $Fl$ over an algebraically closed field, and a subvariety $V$ whose cycle class is a multiplicity-free sum of Schubert cycles. We show that $V$ is arithmetically normal and Cohen-Macaulay, in the projective embedding given by any ample invertible sheaf on $Fl$.

Positivity in the Grothendieck group of complex flag varieties

We prove a conjecture of A. S. Buch concerning the structure constants of the Grothendieck ring of a flag variety with respect to its basis of Schubert structure sheaves. For this, we show that the coefficients in this basis of the structure sheaf of any subvariety with rational singularities, have alternating signs. Equivalently, the class of the dualizing sheaf of such a subvariety is a nonnegative combination of classes of dualizing sheaves of Schubert varieties.

The virtual Poincare polynomials of homogeneous spaces

We factor the virtual Poincare polynomial of every homogeneous space G/H, where G is a complex connected linear algebraic group and H is an algebraic subgroup, as $t^{2u} (t^2-1)^r Q_{G/H}(t^2)$ for a polynomial $Q_{G/H}$ with non-negative integer coefficients. Moreover, we show that $Q_{G/H}(t^2)$ divides the virtual Poincaré polynomial of every regular embedding of G/H, if H is connected.

Group completions via Hilbert schemes

Let $X$ be a projective variety, homogeneous under a linear algebraic group. We show that the diagonal of $X$ belongs to a unique irreducible component $H_X$ of the Hilbert scheme of $X\times X$. Moreover, $H_X$ is isomorphic to the ``wonderful completion'' of the connected automorphism group of $X$; in particular, $H_X$ is non-singular. We describe explicitly the degenerations of the diagonal in $X\times X$, that is, the points of $H_X$; these subschemes of $X\times X$ are reduced and Cohen-Macaulay.

On orbit closures of Borel subgroups in spherical varieties

Let F be the flag variety of a complex semi-simple group G, let H be an algebraic subgroup of G acting on F with finitely many orbits, and let V be an H-orbit closure in F. Expanding the cohomology class of V in the basis of Schubert classes defines a union V_0 of Schubert varieties in F with positive multiplicities. If G is simply-laced, we show that these multiplicites are equal to the same power of 2. For arbitrary G, we show that V_0 is connected in codimension 1. If moreover all multiplicities are 1, we show that the singularities of V are rational, and we construct a flat degeneration of V to V_0. Thus, for any effective line bundle L on F, the restriction map from H^0(G/B,L) to H^0(V,L) is surjective, and H^i(V,L)=0 for i>0.

Arrangements of hyperplanes II: Szenes formula and Eisenstein series

The aim of this article is to generalize in several variables some formulae for Eisenstein series in one variable. For example the formula $2ζ(2k) = (2π)^{2k} \frac{B_{2k}}{(2k)!} = Res_{z=0}(\frac{1}{z^{2k}(1-e^z)})$ for the values of zeta functions at even integers in functions of Bernoulli numbers. A. Szenes proved in several variables a similar residue formula for the values of the zeta function introduced by Witten. We introduce some Eisenstein series by averaging over a lattice rational functions with poles in an arrangement of hyperplanes. We give another proof of Szenes residue formula by relating it to the constant term of these Eisenstein series.

Large Schubert varieties

For a semisimple adjoint algebraic group $G$ and a Borel subgroup $B$, consider the double classes $BwB$ in $G$ and their closures in the canonical compactification of $G$: we call these closures large Schubert varieties. We show that these varieties are normal and Cohen-Macaulay; we describe their Picard group and the spaces of sections of their line bundles. As an application, we construct geometrically van der Kallen's filtration of the algebra of regular functions on $B$. We also construct a degeneration of the flag variety $G/B$ embedded diagonally in $G/B\times G/B$, into a union of Schubert varieties. This leads to formulae for the class of the diagonal in $T$-equivariant $K$-theory of $G/B\times G/B$, where $T$ is a maximal torus of $B$.

Arrangements of hyperplanes I: Rational functions and Jeffrey-Kirwan residue

Consider the space $R_Δ$ of rational functions of several variables with poles on a fixed arrangement $Δ$ of hyperplanes. We obtain a decomposition of $R_Δ$ as a module over the ring of differential operators with constant coefficients. We generalize to the space $R_Δ$ the notions of principal part and of residue, and we describe its relations to Laplace transforms of locally polynomial functions. This explains algebraic aspects of work by L. Jeffreys and F. Kirwan about integrals of equivariant cohomology classes on Hamiltonian manifolds. As another application, we will construct multidimensional versions of Eisenstein series in a subsequent article, and we will obtain another proof of a residue formula of A. Szenes for Witten zeta functions.
