Young tableaux and homotopy commutative algebras

A homotopy commutative algebra, or $C_{\infty}$-algebra, is defined via the Tornike Kadeishvili homotopy transfer theorem on the vector space generated by the set of Young tableaux with self-conjugated Young diagrams. We prove that this $C_{\infty}$-algebra is generated in degree 1 by the binary and the ternary operations.

From Koszul duality to Poincaré duality

We discuss the notion of Poincaré duality for graded algebras and its connections with the Koszul duality for quadratic Koszul algebras. The relevance of the Poincaré duality is pointed out for the existence of twisted potentials associated to Koszul algebras as well as for the extraction of a good generalization of Lie algebras among the quadratic-linear algebras.

Lie prealgebras

We introduce a generalization of Lie algebras within the theory of nonhomogeneous quadratic algebras and point out its relevance in the theory of quantum groups. In particular the relation between the differential calculus on quantum group and the Koszul duality due to Positselski is made apparent.

Notes sur les variétés différentiables, structures complexes et quaternioniques et applications

These are notes of lectures given at the Third School of Theoretical Physics in Jijel (Algeria, September 2009). The subject of these notes is differential geometry, complex and quaternionic structures with applications to theoretical physics. Concerning the physical applications, they contain several aspects of Penrose transformation in the Riemannian context (Euclidean signature) and various formulations of the Yang-Mills and Einstein equations among which several are unusual ones.

Noncommutative coordinate algebras

We discuss the noncommutative generalizations of polynomial algebras which after appropriate completions can be used as coordinate algebras in various noncommutative settings, (noncommutative differential geometry, noncommutative algebraic geometry, etc.). These algebras have finite presentations and are completely characterized and classified by their (noncommutative) volume forms.

Tensor product of N-complexes and generalization of graded differential algebras

It is known that the notion of graded differential algebra coincides with the notion of monoid in the monoidal category of complexes. By using the monoidal structure introduced by M. Kapranov for the category of $N$-complexes we define the corresponding generalization of graded differential algebras as the monoids of this category. It turns out that this generalization coincides with the notion of graded $q$-differential algebra which has been previously introduced and studied.

Abundance of local actions for the vacuum Einstein equations

We exhibit large classes of local actions for the vacuum Einstein equations. In presence of fermions, or more generally of matter which couple to the connection, these actions lead to inequivalent equations revealing an arbitrary number of parameters. Even in the pure gravitational sector, any corresponding quantum theory would depend on these parameters.

Inhomogeneous Yang-Mills algebras

We determine all inhomogeneous Yang-Mills algebras and super Yang-Mills algebras which are Koszul. Following a recent proposal, a non-homogeneous algebra is said to be Koszul if the homogeneous part is Koszul and if the PBW property holds. In this paper, the homogeneous parts are the Yang-Mills algebra and the super Yang-Mills algebra.

Non commutative finite dimensional manifolds II. Moduli space and structure of non commutative 3-spheres

This paper contains detailed proofs of our results on the moduli space and the structure of noncommutative 3-spheres. We develop the notion of central quadratic form for quadratic algebras, and a general theory which creates a bridge between noncommutative differential geometry and its purely algebraic counterpart. It allows to construct a morphism from an involutive quadratic algebras to a C*-algebra constructed from the characteristic variety and the hermitian line bundle associated to the central quadratic form. We apply the general theory in the case of noncommutative 3-spheres and show that the above morphism corresponds to a natural ramified covering by a noncommutative 3-dimensional nilmanifold. We then compute the Jacobian of the ramified covering and obtain the answer as the product of a period (of an elliptic integral) by a rational function. We describe the real and complex moduli spaces of noncommutative 3-spheres, relate the real one to root systems and the complex one to the orbits of a birational cubic automorphism of three dimensional projective space. We classify the algebras and establish duality relations between them.

Yang-Mills and some related algebras

After a short introduction on the theory of homogeneous algebras we describe the application of this theory to the analysis of the cubic Yang-Mills algebra, the quadratic self-duality algebras, their "super" versions as well as to some generalization.

Moduli space and structure of noncommutative 3-spheres

We analyse the moduli space and the structure of noncommutative 3-spheres. We develop the notion of central quadratic form for quadratic algebras, and prove a general algebraic result which considerably refines the classical homomorphism from a quadratic algebra to a cross-product algebra associated to the characteristic variety and lands in a richer cross-product. It allows to control the $C^\ast$-norm on involutive quadratic algebras and to construct the differential calculus in the desired generality. The moduli space of noncommutative 3-spheres is identified with equivalence classes of pairs of points in a symmetric spaceof unitary unimodular symmetric matrices. The scaling foliation of the moduli space is identified to the gradient flow of the character of a virtual representation of SO(6). Its generic orbits are connected components of real parts of elliptic curves which form a net of biquadratic curves with 8 points in common. We show that generically these curves are the same as the characteristic variety of the associated quadratic algebra. We then apply the general theory of central quadratic forms to show that the noncommutative 3-spheres admit a natural ramified covering $π$ by a noncommutative 3-dimensional nilmanifold. This yields the differential calculus. We then compute the Jacobian of the ramified covering $π$ by pairing the direct image of the fundamental class of the noncommutative 3--dimensional nilmanifold with the Chern character of the defining unitary and obtain the answer as the product of a period (of an elliptic integral) by a rational function...

Yang-Mills algebra

Some unexpected properties of the cubic algebra generated by the covariant derivatives of a generic Yang-Mills connection over the (s+1)-dimensional pseudo Euclidean space are pointed out. This algebra is Gorenstein and Koszul of global dimension 3 but except for s=1 (i.e. in the 2-dimensional case) where it is the universal enveloping algebra of the Heisenberg Lie algebra and is a cubic Artin-Schelter regular algebra, it fails to be regular in that it has exponential growth. We give an explicit formula for the Poincare series of this algebra A and for the dimension in degree n of the graded Lie algebra of which A is the universal enveloping algebra. In the 4-dimensional (i.e. s=3) Euclidean case, a quotient of this algebra is the quadratic algebra generated by the covariant derivatives of a generic (anti) self-dual connection. This latter algebra is Koszul of global dimension 2 but is not Gorenstein and has exponential growth. It is the universal enveloping algebra of the graded Lie-algebra which is the semi-direct product of the free Lie algebra with three generators of degree one by a derivation of degree one.

Homogeneous algebras, statistics and combinatorics

After some generalities on homogeneous algebras, we give a formula connecting the Poincaré series of a homogeneous algebra with the homology of the corresponding Koszul complex generalizing thereby a standard result for quadratic algebras. We then investigate two particular types of cubic algebras: The first one called the parafermionic (parabosonic) algebra is the algebra generated by the creation operators of the universal fermionic (bosonic) parastatics with $D$ degrees of freedom while the second is the plactic algebra that is the algebra of the plactic monoid with entries in $\{1,2,..., D\}$. In the case D=2 we describe the relations with the cubic Artin-Schelter algebras. It is pointed out that the natural action of GL(2) on the parafermionic algebra for D=2 extends as an action of the quantum group $GL_{p,q}(2)$ on the generic cubic Artin-Schelter regular algebra of type $S_1$; $p$ and $q$ being related to the Artin-Schelter parameters. It is claimed that this has a counterpart for any integer $D\geq 2$.

Noncommutative finite-dimensional manifolds. I. Spherical manifolds and related examples

We exhibit large classes of examples of noncommutative finite-dimensional manifolds which are (non-formal) deformations of classical manifolds. The main result of this paper is a complete description of noncommutative three-dimensional spherical manifolds, a noncommutative version of the sphere $S^3$ defined by basic K-theoretic equations. We find a 3-parameter family of deformations $S^3_{\mathbf{u}}$ of the standard 3-sphere $S^3$ and a corresponding 3-parameter deformation of the 4-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb R^4$. For generic values of the deformation parameters we show that the obtained algebras of polynomials on the deformed $\mathbb R^4_{\mathbf{u}}$ only depend on two parameters and are isomorphic to the algebras introduced by Sklyanin in connection with the Yang-Baxter equation. It follows that different $S^3_{\mathbf{u}}$ can span the same $\mathbb R^4_{\mathbf{u}}$. This equivalence generates a foliation of the parameter space $Σ$. This foliation admits singular leaves reduced to a point. These critical points are either isolated or fall in two 1-parameter families $ C_{\pm}\subset Σ$. Up to the simple operation of taking the fixed algebra by an involution, these two families are identical and we concentrate here on $ C_{+}$. For $u \in C_{+}$ the above isomorphism with the Sklyanin algebra breaks down and the corresponding algebras are special cases of $θ$-deformations, a notion which we generalize in any dimension and various contexts, and study in some details. Here, and this point is crucial, the dimension is not an artifact, i.e. the dimension of the classical model, but is the Hochschild dimension of the corresponding algebra which remains constant during the deformation....

Homogeneous algebras

Various concepts associated with quadratic algebras admit natural generalizations when the quadratic algebras are replaced by graded algebras which are finitely generated in degree 1 with homogeneous relations of degree N. Such algebras are referred to as {\sl homogeneous algebras of degree N}. In particular it is shown that the Koszul complexes of quadratic algebras generalize as N-complexes for homogeneous algebras of degree N.

Tensor fields of mixed Young symmetry type and N-complexes

We construct $N$-complexes of non completely antisymmetric irreducible tensor fields on $\mathbb R^D$ which generalize the usual complex $(N=2)$ of differential forms. Although, for $N\geq 3$, the generalized cohomology of these $N$-complexes is non trivial, we prove a generalization of the Poincaré lemma. To that end we use a technique reminiscent of the Green ansatz for parastatistics. Several results which appeared in various contexts are shown to be particular cases of this generalized Poincaré lemma. We furthermore identify the nontrivial part of the generalized cohomology. Many of the results presented here were announced in [10].

Smooth *-algebras

Looking for the universal covering of the smooth non-commutative torus leads to a curve of associative multiplications on the space $\Cal O_M'(\Bbb R^{2n})\cong \Cal O_C(\Bbb R^{2n})$ of Laurent Schwartz which is smooth in the deformation parameter $\hbar$. The Taylor expansion in $\hbar$ leads to the formal Moyal star product. The non-commutative torus and this version of the Heisenberg plane are examples of smooth *-algebras: smooth in the sense of having many derivations. A tentative definition of this concept is given.

Lectures on differentials, generalized differentials and on some examples related to theoretical physics

These notes contain a survey of some aspects of the theory of differential modules and complexes as well as of their generalization, that is, the theory of $N$-differential modules and $N$-complexes. Several applications and examples coming from physics are discussed. The commun feature of these physical applications is that they deal with the theory of constrained or gauge systems. In particular different aspects of the BRS methods are explained and a detailed account of the $N$-complexes arising in the theory of higher spin gauge fields is given.
