5d SCFT fixtures

In the context of the atomic classification of 5d SCFTs building blocks with non-simply laced global symmetries are lacking. In this work we fill this gap by introducing a new class of 5d UV fixed points (the 5d SCFT "fixtures"). Physically, 5d SCFTs fixtures are the result of a Higgs branch RG flow, realized geometrically by M-theory on singular threefolds which we identify explicitly. In particular, this enables the construction of 5d conformal matter SCFTs with non-simply laced flavor symmetry. Along the way, we discuss their circle reduction in relation to 4d theories of class-S type.

From Multipartite Entanglement to TQFT

At long distances, a gapped phase of matter is described by a topological quantum field theory (TQFT). We conjecture a tight and concrete relationship between the genuine $(d+1)$-partite entanglement -- labelled by a $d$-dimensional manifold $M$ -- in the ground state of a $(d-1)+1$-dimensional gapped theory and the partition function of the low energy TQFT on $M$. Under certain assumptions, the conjecture implies that for $d=3$, the ground state wavefunction can determine the modular tensor category description of the low energy TQFT. We verify our conjecture for general (2+1)-dimensional Levin-Wen string-net models.

SymTFT for Continuous Symmetries: Non-linear Realizations and Spontaneous Breaking

It is well known that continuous symmetries of quantum fields can be realized non-linearly, e.g. in the context of sigma models, and can also be spontaneously broken on non-compact spacetimes. In this note we study how these effects are realized in the context of the topological symmetry theory for continuous symmetries. In particular, we explain coset realizations and their higher $p$-form symmetry versions from this perspective, as well as uplifts to higher groups and non-invertible symmetries. Moreover, using a setup with boundaries and corners, we explore spontaneous symmetry breaking scenarios for higher $p$-form symmetries as well as non-Abelian $0$-form symmetries.

5d Higgs Branches: Stratifications from Geometry

Higgs Branches of 5d SCFTs are hyperkähler cones, symplectic varieties with interesting nested singularities governing the structure of possible Higgs branch RG flows. The main purpose of this note is to investigate 5d Higgs Branches via a geometric route: we study 5d SCFTs geometrically engineered from M-theory on non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds, with non-isolated singularities. We match the (dynamical) complex structure deformations of the threefold with the symplectic leaves in the Higgs branch of the 5d SCFT, constructing its stratification purely relying on geometry. Consistency checks for our proposal are presented exploiting magnetic quivers.

5d Trinions and Tetraons

Recently, an atomic classification scheme of 5d SCFTs has been proposed, relying on the identification of indecomposable building blocks that can be fused together to produce large classes of 5d SCFTs. These novel SCFTs are known as bifundamental 5d conformal matter theories, and their fusion produces linear generalized quivers. We generalize such picture employing M-theory geometric engineering to construct trinions and tetraon 5d SCFTs with flavor symmetry of type D. They correspond to non-linear generalized quivers displaying novel patterns of instantonic symmetry enhancement, and their fusion produces singular geometries that often are non-toric non-complete intersections. Finally, within our setup, we rule out trinions and tetraons of type E.

From Quivers to Geometry: 5d Conformal Matter

We show that all 5d balanced (ADE-shaped) special unitary quivers with no Chern-Simons level admit a UV completion which is a 5d conformal matter SCFT. We give explicit local Calabi-Yau threefolds realizing each of these models in M-theory. This unified description enables a systematic exploration of their physical properties, such as their Higgs Branch, as well as connections to class-S constructions and the affine Grassmannian.

SymTFTs for Continuous non-Abelian Symmetries

Topological defects and operators give a far-reaching generalization of symmetries of quantum fields. An auxiliary topological field theory in one dimension higher than the QFT of interest, known as the SymTFT, provides a natural way for capturing such operators. This gives a new perspective on several applications of symmetries, but fails to capture continuous non-Abelian symmetries. The main aim of this work is to fill this gap. Guided by geometric engineering and holography, we recover various known features of representation theory of the non-Abelian symmetry from a SymTFT viewpoint. Central to our approach is a duality between (flat) free Yang-Mills and non-Abelian BF theories. Our results extend naturally to models without supersymmetry.

Allowed Coulomb branch scaling dimensions of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs

A basic datum of a rank-$r$ $\mathcal{N}{=}2$ superconformal field theory (SCFT) is the $r$-tuple of its Coulomb branch scaling dimensions, i.e., the scaling dimensions of a set of special protected scalar operators whose vevs generate the coordinate ring of the Coulomb branch of the theory. It is well known that when the coordinate ring is freely generated these scaling dimensions can only take values in a small set of rational numbers. But there are further constraints on which $r$-tuples of these numbers can appear. The main aim of this work is to clarify what these are. Along the way we also compute explicitly the $r$-tuples of allowed scaling dimensions for theories of ranks $r = 2, 3, 4$.

SymTFT, Protected Gaplessness, and Spontaneous Breaking of Non-invertible Symmetries

In recent years we have learned that several four-dimensional field theories can manifest non-invertible zero-form symmetries generalizing the Kramers-Wannier duality defect of the 2d critical Ising model. Several recent works by various groups have observed a deep interplay among such non-invertible symmetries in 3+1 dimensions, their anomalies, and the properties of the ground state(s). The purpose of this work is to present a first coarse classification of all possible classes of non-invertible symmetries of this type that can either enforce gaplessness or be spontaneously broken in the infrared exploiting the topological symmetry theory formalism. Our methods also generalize to non-invertible KW-like duality symmetries graded by non-abelian finite subgroups. As a first applications of our results we present examples in the context of supersymmetric models. Along the way we notice the potential for further global structures that could be realized by non-SUSY versions of Argyres-Douglas type fixed points.

The Higher Structure of Symmetries of Axion-Maxwell Theory

Generalized symmetries of quantum field theories can be characterized by topological defects/operators organized into a higher category. In this paper we consider the Axion-Maxwell field theory in four dimensions and, building on the construction of its topological defects by Choi, Lam, Shao, Hidaka, Nitta and Yokokura, we discuss field theoretical methods to compute some aspects of the higher structure of such category. In particular, we determine explicitly the generalized F-symbols for the non-invertible electric 1-form symmetry of the theory. Along the way, we clarify various aspects of the bottom-up worldvolume approach towards the calculus of defects.

Remarks on the Higgs Branch of 5d Conformal Matter

Among the elementary building blocks in the atomic classification of 5d SCFTs there are 5d bifundamental conformal matter theories of various kinds. In this work we study the Higgs branch of these models and of the corresponding molecules arising from their fusion. To this aim we use two complementary independent strategies. On the one hand for the type $A$ and $D$ conformal matter, we identify dual $(p,q)$ brane webs in IIB and exploit them to read off the corresponding magnetic quivers. On the other hand, we exploit circle reductions and study the resulting 4d $\mathcal N=2$ SCFTs, giving an alternative derivation of their Higgs branches which extend also to the $E$ types.

SymTFTs and Non-Invertible Symmetries of 6d (2,0) SCFTs of Type $D$ from M-theory

We revisit 6d (2,0) SCFTs of type $D_N$ and their realization in M-theory, focusing on absolute variants of these theories and on their global finite 0- and 2-form symmetries. We derive the 7d SymTFT capturing these global symmetries from M-theory, both from the point of view of the low-energy supergravity action on $AdS_7\times \mathbb{RP}^4$ and from M2- and M5-branes giving rise to its topological operators. Along the way, results by Gukov, Hsin, and Pei are extended by keeping track of an additional 7d $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge field, associated to the outer automorphism of the $D_N$ algebra. In particular, we find an interplay of non-invertible symmetries and mixed anomalies for absolute 6d (2,0) $D_{4k}$ SCFTs with $k\ge 1$. We highlight several subtle points related to the non-orientability of $\mathbb{RP}^4$, the half-integral $G_4$-flux that threads it, and the non-commutativity of fluxes. All these also play an essential role in a holographic derivation of the anomaly polynomial of 6d (2,0) $D_N$ SCFTs.

Simons Lectures on Categorical Symmetries

Global Categorical Symmetries are a powerful new tool for analyzing quantum field theories. This volume compiles lecture notes from the 2022 and 2023 summer schools on Global Categorical Symmetries, held at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and at the Swiss Map Research Station in Les Diableret. Specifically, this volume collects the lectures: * An introduction to symmetries in quantum field theory, Kantaro Ohmori * Introduction to anomalies in quantum field theory, Clay Córdova * Symmetry Categories 101, Michele Del Zotto * Applied Cobordism Hypothesis, David Jordan * Finite symmetry in QFT, Daniel S. Freed These volumes are devoted to interested newcomers: we only assume (basic) knowledge of quantum field theory (QFT) and some relevant maths. We try to give appropriate references for non-standard materials that are not covered. Our aim in this first volume is to illustrate some of the main questions and ideas together with some of the methods and the techniques necessary to begin exploring global categorical symmetries of QFTs.

Emergent Non-Invertible Symmetries Bridging UV and IR Phases -- The Adjoint QCD Example

In this letter, we demonstrate how an emergent non-invertible symmetry along a renormalization group (RG) flow reveals connections between microscopic and macroscopic physics. We illustrate this using (3+1)-dimensional Adjoint QCD with two flavors of Weyl fermions as an example. For the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ case, Córdova and Dumitrescu proposed a non-supersymmetric deformation of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM theory leading to dynamical abelianization, followed by monopole condensation, and resulting in a confining infrared (IR) phase characterized by disjoint copies of the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ sigma model. In this scenario, we point out that the abelianized phase has an emergent non-invertible symmetry, which is matched with the non-invertible symmetry of the IR $\mathbb{CP}^1$ phase, associated to the Hopf solitons. This result illustrate how an emergent non-invertible symmetry can be used to provide a bridge connecting the IR solitons and their properties with the ones of microscopic degrees of freedom in gauge theories with one-form symmetries. Moreover, based on this insight we generalize these results to other gauge theories with any number of colors, and propose a candidate for the UV baryon operator in all these cases.

Remarks on Geometric Engineering, Symmetry TFTs and Anomalies

Geometric engineering is a collection of tools developed to establish dictionaries between local singularities in string theory and (supersymmetric) quantum fields. Extended operators and defects, as well as their higher quantum numbers captured by topological symmetries, can be encoded within geometric engineering dictionaries. In this paper we revisit and clarify aspects of these techniques, with special emphasis on 't Hooft anomalies, interpreted from the SymTFT perspective as obstructions to the existence of Neumann boundary conditions. These obstructions to gauging higher symmetries are captured via higher link correlators for the SymTFT on spheres. In this work, we give the geometric engineering counterpart of this construction in terms of higher links of topological membranes. We provide a consistency check in the context of 5D SCFTs with anomalous 1-form symmetries, where we give two independent derivations of the anomaly in terms of higher links, one purely field theoretical and the other purely geometrical. Along the way, we also recover the construction of non-invertible duality defects in 4D $\mathcal N=4$ SYM from a geometric engineering perspective.

The ALE Partition Functions of M-Strings

We compute the equivariant partition function of the six-dimensional M-string SCFTs on a background with the topology of a product of a two-dimensional torus and an ALE singularity. We determine the result by exploiting BPS strings probing the singularity, whose worldvolume theories we determine via a chain of string dualities. A distinguished feature we observe is that for this class of background the BPS strings' worldsheet theories become relative field theories that are sensitive to finer discrete data generalizing to 6d the familiar choices of flat connections at infinity for instantons on ALE spaces. We test our proposal against a conjectural 6d N = (1,0) generalization of the Nekrasov master formula, as well as against known results on ALE partition functions in four dimensions.

The Higgs branch of Heterotic ALE instantons

We begin a study of the Higgs branch of six-dimensional $(1,0)$ little string theories governing the worldvolumes of heterotic ALE instantons. We give a description of this space by constructing the corresponding magnetic quiver. The latter is a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theory that flows in the infrared to a fixed point whose quantum corrected Coulomb branches is the Higgs branch of the six-dimensional theory of interest. We present results for both types of heterotic strings, and mostly for $\mathbb C^2/\mathbb Z_k$ ALE spaces. Our analysis is valid both in the absence and in the presence of small instantons. Along the way, we also describe small $SO(32)$ instanton transitions in terms of the corresponding magnetic quiver, which parallels a similar treatment of the small $E_8$ instanton transitions in the context of the $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string.

A new vista on the Heterotic Moduli Space from Six and Three Dimensions

We settle a long-standing question about the hypermultiplet moduli spaces of the heterotic strings on ALE singularities. These heterotic backgrounds are specified by the singularity type, an instanton number, and a (nontrivial) flat connection at infinity. Building on their interpretation as six-dimensional theories, we determine a class of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories whose quantum corrected Coulomb branch coincides with the exact heterotic hypermultiplet moduli space.
