Four-manifolds and Symmetry Categories of 2d CFTs

In this paper we study the geometric origin of non-invertible symmetries of 2d theories arising from the reduction of 6d $(2,0)$ theories on four-manifolds. This generalizes and extends our previous results in the context of class $\mathcal S$ theories to a wider realm of models. In particular, we find that relative 2d field theories, such as the chiral boson, have a higher dimensional origin in four-manifolds that are not null cobordant. Moreover, we see that for the 2d theories with a 6d origin, the non-invertible symmetries have a geometric origin as a sum over topologies from the perspective of the 7d symmetry TFT. In particular, we show that the Tambara-Yamagami non-invertible symmetries $TY(\mathbb Z_N)$ can be given a geometric origin of this kind. We focus on examples that do not depend on spin structures, but we analyse the simplest of such cases, finding an interesting parallel between the extra choices arising in that context and symmetry fractionalization in Maxwell theories.

Topological defects

This is a survey article for the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, 2nd Edition. Topological defects are described in the context of the 2-dimensional Ising model on the lattice, in 2-dimensional quantum field theory, in topological quantum field theory in arbitrary dimension, and in higher-dimensional quantum field theory with a focus on 4-dimensional quantum electrodynamics.

The ALE Partition Functions of M-String Orbifolds

The ALE partition functions of a 6d (1,0) SCFT are interesting observables which are able to detect the global structure of the SCFT. They are defined to be the equivariant partition functions of the SCFT on a background with the topology of a two-dimensional torus times an ALE singularity. In this work, we compute the ALE partition functions of M-string orbifold SCFTs, extending our previous results for the M-string SCFTs. Via geometric engineering, our results about ALE partition functions are connected to the theory of higher-rank Donaldson-Thomas invariants for resolutions of elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold singularities. We predict that their generating functions satisfy interesting modular properties. The partition functions receive contributions from BPS strings probing the ALE singularity, whose worldsheet theories we determine via a chain of string dualities. For this class of backgrounds the BPS strings' worldsheet theories become relative field theories that are sensitive to discrete data generalizing to 6d the familiar choices of flat connections at infinity for instantons on ALE spaces. A novel feature we observe in the case of M-string orbifold SCFTs, which does not arise for the M-string SCFT, is the existence of frozen BPS strings which are pinned at the orbifold singularity and carry fractional instanton charge with respect to the 6d gauge fields.

5d Conformal Matter

Six-dimensional superconformal field theories (SCFTs) have an atomic classification in terms of elementary building blocks, conformal systems that generalize matter and can be fused together to form all known 6d SCFTs in terms of generalized 6d quivers. It is therefore natural to ask whether 5d SCFTs can be organized in a similar manner, as the outcome of fusions of certain elementary building blocks, which we call 5d conformal matter theories. In this project we begin exploring this idea and we give a systematic construction of 5d generalized ``bifundamental'' SCFTs, building from geometric engineering techniques in M-theory. In particular, we find several examples of $(\mathfrak {e}_6,\mathfrak {e}_6)$, $(\mathfrak {e}_7,\mathfrak {e}_7)$ and $(\mathfrak {e}_8,\mathfrak {e}_8)$ 5d bifundamental SCFTs beyond the ones arising from (elementary) KK reductions of the 6d conformal matter theories. We show that these can be fused together giving rise to 5d SCFTs captured by 5d generalized linear quivers with exceptional gauge groups as nodes, and links given by 5d conformal matter. As a first application of these models we uncover a large class of novel 5d dualites, that generalize the well-known fiber/base dualities outside the toric realm.

Back to Heterotic Strings on ALE Spaces: Part II -- Geometry of T-dual Little Strings

This work is the second of a series of papers devoted to revisiting the properties of Heterotic string compactifications on ALE spaces. In this project we study the geometric counterpart in F-theory of the T-dualities between Heterotic ALE instantonic Little String Theories (LSTs) extending and generalising previous results on the subject by Aspinwall and Morrison. Since the T-dualities arise from a circle reduction one can exploit the duality between F-theory and M-theory to explore a larger moduli space, where T-dualities are realised as inequivalent elliptic fibrations of the same geometry. As expected from the Heterotic/F-theory duality the elliptic F-theory Calabi-Yau we consider admit a nested elliptic K3 fibration structure. This is central for our construction: the K3 fibrations determine the flavor groups and their global forms, and are the key to identify various T-dualities. We remark that this method works also more generally for LSTs arising from non-geometric Heterotic backgrounds. We study a first example in detail: a particularly exotic class of LSTs which are built from extremal K3 surfaces that admit flavor groups with maximal rank 18. We find all models are related by a so-called T-hexality (i.e. a 6-fold family of T-dualities) which we predict from the inequivalent elliptic fibrations of the extremal K3.

Higher Structure of Chiral Symmetry

A recent development in our understanding of the theory of quantum fields is the fact that familiar gauge theories in spacetime dimensions greater than two can have non-invertible symmetries generated by topological defects. The hallmark of these non-invertible symmetries is that the fusion rule deviates from the usual group-like structure, and in particular the fusion coefficients take values in topological field theories (TFTs) rather than in mere numbers. In this paper we begin an exploration of the associativity structure of non-invertible symmetries in higher dimensions. The first layer of associativity is captured by F-symbols, which we find to assume values in TFTs that have one dimension lower than that of the defect. We undertake an explicit analysis of the F-symbols for the non-invertible chiral symmetry that is preserved by the massless QED and explore their physical implications. In particular, we show the F-symbol TFTs can be detected by probing the correlators of topological defects with 't Hooft lines. Furthermore, we derive the Ward-Takahashi identity that arises from the chiral symmetry on a large class of four-dimensional manifolds with non-trivial topologies directly from the topological data of the symmetry defects, without referring to a Lagrangian formulation of the theory.

Junctions, Edge Modes, and $G_2$-Holonomy Orbifolds

One of the general strategies for realizing a wide class of interacting QFTs is via junctions and intersections of higher-dimensional bulk theories. In the context of string/M-theory, this includes many $D > 4$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) coupled to an IR free bulk. Gauging the flavor symmetries of these theories and allowing position dependent gauge couplings provides a general strategy for realizing novel higher-dimensional junctions of theories coupled to localized edge modes. Here, we show that M-theory on singular, asymptotically conical $G_2$-holonomy orbifolds provides a general template for realizing strongly coupled 5D bulk theories with 4D $\mathcal{N} = 1$ edge modes. This geometric approach also shows how bulk generalized symmetries are inherited in the boundary system.

6D Heterotic Little String Theories and F-theory Geometry: An Introduction

We review here some aspects of our recent works about the geometric engineering of heterotic little string theories using F-theory. Building on the seminal work by Aspinwall and Morrison as well as Intrilligator and Blum, we solve some longstanding open questions thanks to recent progress in our understanding of 6D (1,0) theories and their generalized symmetries. On the geometry side, these systems correspond to non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau varieties that must admit the structure of an elliptic K3 fibration. From fiberwise F-theory/Heterotic duality the K3 plays a central role - it determines the 6D flavor group, as well as different T-dual LSTs via inequivalent elliptic fibration structures. The geometries we obtain are some finer versions of Kulikov degenerations: the point where the K3 fiber degenerates is the locus where the LST arises. This structure serve on one hand to check our field theory predictions on LST dualities via the match of Coulomb branch dimension, flavor symmetries, and 2-group structure constants, and also on the other hand to deduce novel LST models and their networks of dualities, thus allowing exploring non-geometric Heterotic regimes.

Back to Heterotic Strings on ALE Spaces: Part I -- Instantons, 2-groups and T-duality

In this paper we begin revisiting the little string theories (LSTs) which govern the dynamics of the instantonic heterotic $E_8 \times E_8$ five-branes probing ALE singularities, building on and extending previous results on the subject by Aspinwall and Morrison as well as Blum and Intriligator. Our focus are the cases corresponding to choices of non-trivial flat connections at infinity. The latter are in particular interesting for the exceptional ALE singularities, where a brane realization in Type I$'$ is lacking. Our approach to determine these models is based on 6d conformal matter: we determine these theories as generalized 6d quivers. All these LSTs have a higher-one form symmetry which forms a 2-group with the zero-form Poincaré symmetry, the R-symmetry and the other global symmetries: the matching of the R-symmetry two-group structure constant is a stringent constraint for T-dualities, which we use in combination with the matching of 5d Coulomb branches and flavor symmetries upon circle reduction, as a consistency check for the realization of the 6d LSTs we propose.

Non-invertible Symmetries of Class $\mathcal{S}$ Theories

We study the non-invertible symmetries of class $\mathcal{S}$ theories obtained by compactifying the type $\mathfrak{a}_{p-1}$ 6d (2,0) theory on a genus $g$ Riemann surface with no punctures. After setting up the general framework, we describe how such symmetries can be classified up to genus 5. Of central interest to us is the question of whether a non-invertible symmetry is "intrinsic," i.e. whether it can be related to an invertible symmetry by discrete gauging. We then describe the higher-dimensional origin of our results, and explain how the Anomaly and Symmetry TFTs, as well as $N$-ality defects, of class $\mathcal{S}$ theories can be obtained from compactification of a 7d Chern-Simons theory. Interestingly, we find that the Symmetry TFT for theories with intrinsically non-invertible symmetries can only be obtained by coupling the 7d Chern-Simons theory to topological gravity.

2-Group Symmetries and M-Theory

Quantum Field Theories engineered in M-theory can have 2-group symmetries, mixing 0-form and 1-form symmetry backgrounds in non-trivial ways. In this paper we develop methods for determining the 2-group structure from the boundary geometry of the M-theory background. We illustrate these methods in the case of 5d theories arising from M-theory on ordinary and generalised toric Calabi-Yau cones, including cases in which the resulting theory is non-Lagrangian. Our results confirm and elucidate previous results on 2-groups from geometric engineering.

Playing with the index of M-theory

Motivated by M-theory, we study rank n K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas theory on a toric threefold X. In the presence of compact four-cycles, we discuss how to include the contribution of D4-branes wrapping them. Combining this with a simple assumption on the (in)dependence on Coulomb moduli in the 7d theory, we show that the partition function factorizes and, when X is Calabi-Yau and it admits an ADE ruling, it reproduces the 5d master formula for the geometrically engineered theory on A(n-1) ALE space, thus extending the usual geometric engineering dictionary to n>1. We finally speculate about implications for instanton counting on Taub-NUT.

On the 6d Origin of Non-invertible Symmetries in 4d

It is well-known that six-dimensional superconformal field theories can be exploited to unravel interesting features of lower-dimensional theories obtained via compactifications. In this short note we discuss a new application of 6d (2,0) theories in constructing 4d theories with Kramers-Wannier-like non-invertible symmetries. Our methods allow to recover previously known results, as well as to exhibit infinitely many new examples of four dimensional theories with "M-ality" defects (arising from operations of order $M$ generalizing dualities). In particular, we obtain examples of order $M=p^k$, where $p>1$ is a prime number and $k$ is a positive integer.

Higher Symmetries of 5d Orbifold SCFTs

We determine the higher symmetries of 5d SCFTs engineered from M-theory on a $\mathbb{C}^3 / Γ$ background for $Γ$ a finite subgroup of $SU(3)$. This resolves a longstanding question as to how to extract this data when the resulting singularity is non-toric (when $Γ$ is non-abelian) and/or not isolated (when the action of $Γ$ has fixed loci). The BPS states of the theory are encoded in a 1d quiver quantum mechanics gauge theory which determines the possible 1-form and 2-form symmetries. We also show that this same data can also be extracted by a direct computation of the corresponding defect group associated with the orbifold singularity. Both methods agree, and these computations do not rely on the existence of a resolution of the singularity. We also observe that when the geometry faithfully captures the global 0-form symmetry, the abelianization of $Γ$ detects a 2-group structure (when present). As such, this establishes that all of this data is indeed intrinsic to the superconformal fixed point rather than being an emergent property of an IR gauge theory phase.

Global Structures from the Infrared

Quantum field theories with identical local dynamics can admit different choices of global structure, leading to different partition functions and spectra of extended operators. Such choices can be reformulated in terms of a topological field theory in one dimension higher, the symmetry TFT. In this paper we show that this TFT can be reconstructed from a careful analysis of the infrared Coulomb-like phases. In particular, the TFT matches between the UV and the IR. This provides a purely field theoretical counterpart of several recent results obtained via geometric engineering in various string/M/F theory setups for theories in four and five dimensions that we confirm and extend.

Evidence for an Algebra of $\boldsymbol{G_2}$ Instantons

In this short note, we present some evidence towards the existence of an algebra of BPS $G_2$ instantons. These are instantonic configurations that govern the partition functions of 7d SYM theories on local $G_2$ holonomy manifolds $\mathcal X$. To shed light on such structure, we begin investigating the relation with parent 4d $\mathcal N=1$ theories obtained by geometric engineering M-theory on $\mathcal X$. The main point of this paper is to substantiate the following dream: the holomorphic sector of such theories on multi-centered Taub-NUT spaces gives rise to an algebra whose characters organise the $G_2$ instanton partition function. As a first step towards this program, we argue by string duality that a multitude of geometries $\mathcal X$ exist that are dual to well-known 4d SCFTs arising from D3 branes probes of CY cones: all these models are amenable to analysis along the lines suggested by Dijkgraaf, Gukov, Neitzke and Vafa in the context of topological M-theory. Moreover, we discuss an interesting relation to Costello's twisted M-theory, which arises at local patches, and is a key ingredient in identifying the relevant algebras.

The Characteristic Dimension of Four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs

In this paper we introduce the characteristic dimension of a four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theory, which is an extraordinary simple invariant determined by the scaling dimensions of its Coulomb branch operators. We prove that only nine values of the characteristic dimension are allowed, $-\infty$, 1 ,6/5, 4/3, 3/2, 2, 3, 4, and 6, thus giving a new organizing principle to the vast landscape of 4d $\mathcal N=2$ SCFTs. Whenever the characteristic dimension differs from 1 or 2, only very constrained special Kähler geometries (i.e. isotrivial, diagonal and rigid) are compatible with the corresponding set of Coulomb branch dimensions and extremely special, maximally strongly coupled, BPS spectra are allowed for the theories which realize them. Our discussion applies to superconformal field theories of arbitrary rank, i.e. with Coulomb branches of any complex dimension. Along the way, we predict the existence of new $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories of rank two with non-trivial one-form symmetries.

2-Group Symmetries of 6d Little String Theories and T-duality

We determine the 2-group structure constants for all the six-dimensional little string theories (LSTs) geometrically engineered in F-theory without frozen singularities. We use this result as a consistency check for T-duality: the 2- groups of a pair of T-dual LSTs have to match. When the T-duality involves a discrete symmetry twist the 2-group used in the matching is modified. We demonstrate the matching of the 2-groups in several examples.
