Dark Matter from 't Hooft Anomaly Matching

Light fermions that arise as composite states in confining gauge theories are stable due to fermion number conservation. This leads to Dark Matter candidates that behave similarly to elementary DM but where the cosmological stability arises automatically from the accidental symmetries of the theory. We present explicit models based on 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions where DM is charged under the SM. For example an SU(N) gauge theory with fermions in the adjoint rep and triplet of SU(2)$_L$ gives rise to DM made of multiple "Wino" triplets, while SO(N) gauge theories with $N_F=N-4$ flavors produce neutralino-like systems or SM quintuplets. Compositeness effects are crucial to determine the phenomenology.

Indirect Detection of Composite (Asymmetric) Dark Matter

Dark Matter can form bound states upon the emission of quanta of energy equal to the binding energy. The rate of this process is large for strongly-interacting Dark Matter, and further enhanced by long distance effects. The resulting monochromatic and diffuse $γ$-rays can be tested in indirect detection experiments. If Dark Matter has electroweak charge, indirect signals include multiple observable photon lines for masses in the TeV range. Else if it couples only via a dark photon portal, diffuse spectra from dwarf galaxies and CMB reionization set powerful limits for masses below a TeV. This mechanism provides a powerful means of probing Asymmetric Dark Matter today.

Gravitational Waves from Supercool Axions

We study the dynamics of the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) phase transition for the QCD axion. In weakly coupled models the transition is typically second order except in the region of parameters where the PQ symmetry is broken through the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. In strongly coupled realizations the transition is often first order. We show examples where the phase transition leads to strong supercooling lowering the nucleation temperature and enhancing the stochastic gravitational wave signals. The models predict a frequency peak in the range 100-1000 Hz with an amplitude that is already within the sensitivity of LIGO and can be thoroughly tested with future gravitational wave interferometers.

Coset Cosmology

We show that the potential of Nambu-Goldstone bosons can have two or more local minima e.g. at antipodal positions in the vacuum manifold. This happens in many models of composite Higgs and of composite Dark Matter. Trigonometric potentials lead to unusual features, such as symmetry non-restoration at high temperature. In some models, such as the minimal $\rm SO(5)/SO(4)$ composite Higgs with fermions in the fundamental representation, the two minima are degenerate giving cosmological domain-wall problems. Otherwise, an unusual cosmology arises, that can lead to supermassive primordial black holes; to vacuum or thermal decays; to a high-temperature phase of broken $\mathrm{SU}(2)_L$, possibly interesting for baryogenesis.

Gluequark Dark Matter

We introduce the gluequark Dark Matter candidate, an accidentally stable bound state made of adjoint fermions and gluons from a new confining gauge force. Such scenario displays an unusual cosmological history where perturbative freeze-out is followed by a non-perturbative re-annihilation period with possible entropy injection. When the gluequark has electroweak quantum numbers, the critical density is obtained for masses as large as PeV. Independently of its mass, the size of the gluequark is determined by the confinement scale of the theory, leading at low energies to annihilation rates and elastic cross sections which are large for particle physics standards and potentially observable in indirect detection experiments.

Colored Dark Matter

We explore the possibility that Dark Matter is the lightest hadron made of two stable color octet Dirac fermions ${\cal Q}$. The cosmological DM abundance is reproduced for $M_{\cal Q}\approx 12.5$ TeV, compatibly with direct searches (the Rayleigh cross section, suppressed by $1/M_{\cal Q}^6$, is close to present bounds), indirect searches (enhanced by ${\cal Q}{\cal Q}+\bar{\cal Q}\bar{\cal Q}\to {\cal Q}\bar{\cal Q}+{\cal Q}\bar{\cal Q}$ recombination), and with collider searches (where ${\cal Q}$ manifests as tracks, pair produced via QCD). Hybrid hadrons, made of $\cal Q$ and of SM quarks and gluons, have large QCD cross sections, and do not reach underground detectors. Their cosmological abundance is $10^5$ times smaller than DM, such that their unusual signals seem compatible with bounds. Those in the Earth and stars sank to their centers; the Earth crust and meteorites later accumulate a secondary abundance, although their present abundance depends on nuclear and geological properties that we cannot compute from first principles.

Cosmological Production of Dark Nuclei

We study the formation of Dark Matter nuclei in scenarios where DM particles are baryons of a new confining gauge force. The dark nucleosynthesis is analogous to the formation of light elements in the SM and requires as a first step the formation of dark deuterium. We compute this process from first principles, using the formalism of pion-less effective theory for nucleon-nucleon interactions. This controlled effective field theory expansion allows us to systematically compute the cross sections for generic SM representations under the assumption of shallow bound states. In the context of vector-like confinement models we find that, for nucleon masses in the TeV range, baryonic DM made of electro-weak constituents can form a significant fraction of dark deuterium and a much smaller fraction of dark tritium. Formation of dark nuclei can also lead to monochromatic photon lines in indirect detection. Models with singlets do not undergo nucleosynthesis unless a dark photon is added to the theory.

Cosmological Abundance of Colored Relics

The relic cosmological abundance of stable or long-lived neutral colored particles gets reduced by about a few orders of magnitude by annihilations that occur after QCD confinement. We compute the abundance and the cosmological bounds on relic gluinos. The same post-confinement effect strongly enhances co-annihilations with a lighter Dark Matter particle, provided that their mass difference is below a few GeV. Charged colored particles (such as stops) can instead form baryons, which can be (quasi)stable in some models.

An almost elementary Higgs: Theory and Practice

We study models that interpolate between an elementary and a composite Higgs boson. Such models, arising in theories with new vector-like fermions with electro-weak quantum numbers and charged under a confining gauge interaction, are entirely compatible with current data, with only weak bounds from flavor, CP-violation and precision tests. After classifying the models from the point of view of symmetries, we study their collider phenomenology at LHC. In the most relevant scenarios, bounds from present searches exclude heavy scalar isospin triplets and quintuplets up to $\sim 200\;$GeV and we show how dedicated searches of simple signals such as $pp\to 3 γW$ could improve the reach by at least a factor of 2 with present data, reaching $O(1\;{\rm TeV})$ with higher integrated luminosities. States that mix with the SM Higgs can be tested in a variety of final states, such as $2b2γ$ searches relevant for double Higgs production.

Cosmological Implications of Dark Matter Bound States

We present generic formulae for computing how Sommerfeld corrections together with bound-state formation affects the thermal abundance of Dark Matter with non-abelian gauge interactions. We consider DM as a fermion 3plet (wino) or 5plet under SU(2)$_L$. In the latter case bound states raise to 14 TeV the DM mass required to reproduce the cosmological DM abundance and give indirect detection signals such as (for this mass) a dominant $γ$-line around 85 GeV. Furthermore, we consider DM co-annihilating with a colored particle, such as a squark or a gluino, finding that bound state effects are especially relevant in the latter case.

The Half-composite Two Higgs Doublet Model and the Relaxion

We study a new confining gauge theory with fermions in a vectorial representation under the SM gauge group that allows for Yukawa interactions with the Higgs. If the fermion masses are smaller than the confinement scale this realizes a type I two Higgs doublet model where a composite Higgs mixes with the elementary Higgs. This class of models interpolates between an elementary and a composite Higgs and has interesting phenomenology with potentially observables effects in collider physics, EDMs and SM couplings but very weak bounds from indirect searches. The very same framework can be used to realize the cosmological relaxation of the electro-weak scale recently discussed in the literature.

Dark Matter as a weakly coupled Dark Baryon

Dark Matter might be an accidentally stable baryon of a new confining gauge interaction. We extend previous studies exploring the possibility that the DM is made of dark quarks heavier than the dark confinement scale. The resulting phenomenology contains new unusual elements: a two-stage DM cosmology (freeze-out followed by dark condensation), a large DM annihilation cross section through recombination of dark quarks (allowing to fit the positron excess). Light dark glue-balls are relatively long lived and give extra cosmological effects; DM itself can remain radioactive.

UV complete composite Higgs models

We study confining gauge theories with fermions vectorial under the SM that produce a Higgs doublet as a Nambu-Goldstone boson. The vacuum misalignment required to break the electro-weak symmetry is induced by an elementary Higgs doublet with Yukawa couplings to the new fermions. The physical Higgs is a linear combination of elementary and composite Higgses while the SM fermions remain elementary. The full theory is renormalizable and the SM Yukawa couplings are generated from the ones of the elementary Higgs allowing to eliminate all flavour problems but with interesting effects for Electric Dipole Moments of SM particles. We also discuss how ideas on the relaxation of the electro-weak scale could be realised within this framework.

Back to 1974: The $\mathcal Q$-onium

We show that the 750 GeV di-photon excess could be explained by the ${\mathcal Q}-$onium system of a new QCD-like theory with fermions vectorial under the SM. Beside the spin-0 di-photon singlet this scenario predicts almost degenerate colored scalars and spin-1 resonances analogous to the $J/Ψ$ in QCD. All these states are within the reach of the LHC. An apparent large width can be explained as due to production of excited states with splitting $Δm\sim Γ$.

Di-photon resonance and Dark Matter as heavy pions

We analyse confining gauge theories where the 750 GeV di-photon resonance is a composite techni-pion that undergoes anomalous decays into SM vectors. These scenarios naturally contain accidentally stable techni-pions Dark Matter candidates. The di-photon resonance can acquire a larger width by decaying into Dark Matter through the CP-violating $θ$-term of the new gauge theory reproducing the cosmological Dark Matter density as thermal relic.

What is the gamma gamma resonance at 750 GeV?

Run 2 LHC data show hints of a new resonance in the diphoton distribution at an invariant mass of 750 GeV. We analyse the data in terms of a new boson, extracting information on its properties and exploring theoretical interpretations. Scenarios covered include a narrow resonance and, as preliminary indications suggest, a wider resonance. If the width indications persist, the new particle is likely to belong to a strongly-interacting sector. We also show how compatibility between Run 1 and Run 2 data is improved by postulating the existence of an additional heavy particle, whose decays are possibly related to dark matter.

Composite Accidental Axions

We present several models where the QCD axion arises accidentally. Confining gauge theories can generate axion candidates whose properties are uniquely determined by the quantum numbers of the new fermions under the Standard Model. The Peccei-Quinn symmetry can emerge accidentally if the gauge theory is chiral. We generalise previous constructions in a unified framework. In some cases these models can be understood as the deconstruction of 5-dimensional gauge theories where the Peccei-Quinn symmetry is protected by locality but more general constructions are possible.

Accidental Composite Dark Matter

We build models where Dark Matter candidates arise as composite states of a new confining gauge force, stable thanks to accidental symmetries. Restricting to renormalizable theories compatible with SU(5) unification, we find 13 models based on SU(N) gauge theories and 9 based on SO(N). We also describe other models that require non-renormalizable interactions. The two gauge groups lead to distinctive phenomenologies: SU(N) theories give complex DM, with potentially observable electric and magnetic dipole moments that lead to peculiar spin-independent cross sections; SO(N) theories give real DM, with challenging spin-dependent cross sections or inelastic scatterings. Models with Yukawa couplings also give rise to spin-independent direct detection mediated by the Higgs boson and to electric dipole moments for the electron. In some models DM has higher spin. Each model predicts a specific set of lighter composite scalars, possibly observable at colliders.
