Dynamical generation of the weak and Dark Matter scales from strong interactions

Assuming that mass scales arise in nature only via dimensional transmutation, we extend the dimension-less Standard Model by adding vector-like fermions charged under a new strong gauge interaction. Their non-perturbative dynamics generates a mass scale that is transmitted to the elementary Higgs boson by electro-weak gauge interactions. In its minimal version the model has the same number of parameters as the Standard Model, predicts that the electro-weak symmetry gets broken, predicts new-physics in the multi-TeV region and is compatible with all existing bounds, provides two Dark Matter candidates stable thanks to accidental symmetries: a composite scalar in the adjoint of SU(2)_L and a composite singlet fermion; their thermal relic abundance is predicted to be comparable to the measured cosmological DM abundance. Some models of this type allow for extra Yukawa couplings; DM candidates remain even if explicit masses are added.

Leptons in Composite MFV

We study the lepton sector of composite Higgs models with partial compositeness. The standard anarchic scenario is in conflict with the absence of observable charged lepton flavor violation. This tension can be completely solved in MFV scenarios that require either left-handed or right-handed SM leptons to be equally composite. Constraints on this scenario are weak and the composite lepton partners could be as light as few hundreds GeVs with interesting LHC signatures. The contribution to the muon (g-2) in theories where the Higgs is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson is also discussed.

Muon Magnetic Moment and the Goldstone Boson Higgs

We compute the correction to the muon magnetic moment in theories where the Higgs is a pseudo-Goldstone boson and leptons are partially composite. Using a general effective lagrangian we show that in some regions of parameters a sizable new physics contribution to the magnetic moment can be obtained from composite fermions that could explain the 3.5$σ$ experimental discrepancy from the Standard Model prediction. This effect depends on the derivative interactions of the Higgs that do not modify the coupling of the Higgs to leptons and it does not require extremely light fermions, allowing to easily avoid LHC bounds. Our derivations can be in general applied to dipole operators in theories with Goldstone boson Higgs.

Non Minimal Terms in Composite Higgs Models and in QCD

We introduce a general parametrisation for theories where the Higgs is a Goldstone boson that encompasses all existing models. Our construction deviates from extra-dimensional or deconstructed theories through the inclusion of "non-local" interactions in theory space. These terms are necessary to reproduce the most general 4D effective lagrangian compatible with the symmetries. After showing the relation of our formalism to the Callan-Coleman-Wess-Zumino effective lagrangian we apply our framework to SO(5)/SO(4) composite Higgs models studying the implications for the Higgs potential, coupling of resonances and S-parameter. We also outline the relevance of non-minimal terms in effective descriptions of QCD, studying the electro-magnetic splitting of pions and the correlation between L_9 and L_10 in the chiral lagrangian.

Flavor and CP Invariant Composite Higgs Models

The flavor protection in composite Higgs models with partial compositeness is known to be insufficient. We explore the possibility to alleviate the tension with CP odd observables by assuming that flavor or CP are symmetries of the composite sector, broken by the coupling to Standard Model fields. One realization is that the composite sector has a flavor symmetry SU(3) or SU(3)_U x SU(3)_D which allows us to realize Minimal Flavor Violation. We show how to avoid the previously problematic tension between a flavor symmetric composite sector and electro-weak precision tests. Some of the light quarks are substantially or even fully composite with striking signals at the LHC. We discuss the constraints from recent dijet mass measurements and give an outlook on the discovery potential. We also present a different protection mechanism where we separate the generation of flavor hierarchies and the origin of CP violation. This can eliminate or safely reduce unwanted CP violating effects, realizing effectively "Minimal CP Violation" and is compatible with a dynamical generation of flavor at low scales.

Strong Signatures of Right-Handed Compositeness

Right-handed light quarks could be significantly composite, yet compatible with experimental searches at the LHC and precision tests on Standard Model couplings. In these scenarios, that are motivated by flavor physics, one expects large cross sections for the production of new resonances coupled to light quarks. We study experimental strong signatures of right-handed compositeness at the LHC, and constrain the parameter space of these models with recent results by ATLAS and CMS. We show that the LHC sensitivity could be significantly improved if dedicated searches were performed, in particular in multi-jet signals.

On the Tuning and the Mass of the Composite Higgs

We analyze quantitatively the tuning of composite Higgs models with partial compositeness and its interplay with the predicted Higgs mass. In this respect we identify three classes of models, characterized by different quantum numbers of the fermionic colored resonances associated with the top quark, the so-called top partners. The main result of this classification is that in all models with moderate tuning a light Higgs, of 125 GeV mass, requires the presence of light top partners, around 1 TeV. The minimal tuning is comparable to the one of the most attractive supersymmetric models in particular the ones realizing Natural SUSY. This gives further support to an extensive program of top partners searches at the LHC that can already probe the natural region of composite Higgs models.

Axion-Higgs Unification

In theories with no fundamental scalars, one gauge group can become strong at a large scale Lambda and spontaneously break a global symmetry, producing the Higgs and the axion as composite pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons. We show how KSVZ and DFSZ axion models can be naturally realised. The assumption Lambda around 10^{11} GeV is phenomenologically favoured because: a) The axion solves the QCD theta problem and provides the observed DM abundance; b) The observed Higgs mass is generated via RGE effects from a small Higgs quartic coupling at the compositeness scale, provided that the Higgs mass term is fine-tuned to be of electroweak size; c) Lepton, quark as well as neutrino masses can be obtained from four-fermion operators at the compositeness scale. d) The extra fermions can unify the gauge couplings.

Implications of a Light Higgs in Composite Models

We study the Higgs mass in composite Higgs models with partial compositeness, extending the results of Ref. [1] to different representations of the composite sector for SO(5)/SO(4) and to the coset SO(6)/SO(5). For a given tuning we find in general a strong correlation between the mass of the top partners and the Higgs mass, akin to the one in supersymmetry. If the theory is natural a Higgs mass of 125 GeV typically requires fermionic partners below TeV which might be within the reach of the present run of LHC. A discussion of CP properties of both cosets is also presented.

Composite MFV and Beyond

We revisit and extend realizations of Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV) in theories with strongly coupled electro-weak symmetry breaking. MFV requires that some chiralities of light SM quarks are strongly composite leading, depending on the scenario, to bounds from compositeness searches, precision electro-weak tests or even flavor physics. Within the framework of partial compositeness we show how to extend the MFV paradigm allowing the treat the top quark differently. This can be realized if for example the strong sector has an U(2) symmetry. In this case the light generations can be mostly elementary and all the bounds are easily satisfied.

The 4D Composite Higgs

We propose a four dimensional description of Composite Higgs Models which represents a complete framework for the physics of the Higgs as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. Our setup captures all the relevant features of 5D models and more in general of composite Higgs models with partial compositeness. We focus on the minimal scenario where we include a single multiplet of resonances of the composite sector, as these will be the only degrees of freedom which might be accessible at the LHC. This turns out to be sufficient to compute the effective potential and derive phenomenological consequences of the theory. Moreover our simplified approach is well adapted to simulate these models at the LHC. We also consider the impact of non-minimal terms in the effective lagrangian which do not descend from a 5D theory and could be of phenomenological relevance, for example contributing to the S-parameter.

The Other Natural Two Higgs Doublet Model

We characterize models where electroweak symmetry breaking is driven by two light Higgs doublets arising as pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons of new dynamics above the weak scale. They represent the simplest natural two Higgs doublet alternative to supersymmetry. We construct their low-energy effective Lagrangian making only few specific assumptions about the strong sector. These concern their global symmetries, their patterns of spontaneous breaking and the sources of explicit breaking. In particular we assume that all the explicit breaking is associated with the couplings of the strong sector to the Standard Model fields, that is gauge and (proto)-Yukawa interactions. Under those assumptions the scalar potential is determined at lowest order by very few free parameters associated to the top sector. Another crucial property of our scenarios is the presence of a discrete symmetry, in addition to custodial SO(4), that controls the $T$-parameter. That can either be simple CP or a $Z_2$ that distinguishes the two Higgs doublets. Among various possibilities we study in detail models based on SO(6)/SO(4)$\times$ SO(2), focussing on their predictions for the structure of the scalar spectrum and the deviations of their couplings from those of a generic renormalizable two Higgs doublet model.

Low Scale Flavor Gauge Symmetries

We study the possibility of gauging the Standard Model flavor group. Anomaly cancellation leads to the addition of fermions whose mass is inversely proportional to the known fermion masses. In this case all flavor violating effects turn out to be controlled roughly by the Standard Model Yukawa, suppressing transitions for the light generations. Due to the inverted hierarchy the scale of new gauge flavor bosons could be as low as the electroweak scale without violating any existing bound but accessible at the Tevatron and the LHC. The mechanism of flavor protection potentially provides an alternative to Minimal Flavor Violation, with flavor violating effects suppressed by hierarchy of scales rather than couplings.

Partially Supersymmetric Composite Higgs Models

We study the idea of the Higgs as a pseudo-Goldstone boson within the framework of partial supersymmetry in Randall-Sundrum scenarios and their CFT duals. The Higgs and third generation of the MSSM are composites arising from a strongly coupled supersymmetric CFT with global symmetry SO(5) spontaneously broken to SO(4), whilst the light generations and gauge fields are elementary degrees of freedom whose couplings to the strong sector explicitly break the global symmetry as well as supersymmetry. The presence of supersymmetry in the strong sector may allow the compositeness scale to be raised to ~10 TeV without fine tuning, consistent with the bounds from precision electro-weak measurements and flavour physics. The supersymmetric flavour problem is also solved. At low energies, this scenario reduces to the "More Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model" where only stops, Higgsinos and gauginos are light and within reach of the LHC.

AdS/QCD: The Relevance of the Geometry

We investigate the relevance of the metric and of the geometry in five-dimensional models of hadrons. Generically, the metric does not affect strongly the results and even flat space agrees reasonably well with the data. Nevertheless, we observe a preference for a decreasing warp factor, for example AdS space. The Sakai-Sugimoto model reduces to one of these models and the level of agreement is similar to the one of flat space. We also consider the discrete version of the five-dimensional models, obtained by dimensional deconstruction. We find that essentially all the relevant features of "holographic" models of QCD can be reproduced with a simple 3-site model describing only the states below the cut-off of the theory.

Gauge Boson Mass Generation in AdS4

We investigate the role of boundary conditions in gauge theories in AdS4. The presence of the boundary can break the gauge symmetry consistently with AdS4 isometries. We show that, as a consequence, the gauge bosons associated to the broken symmetries become massive at one loop. In particular chiral gauge theories such us the Standard Model are necessarily massive in AdS4. We briefly discuss similarities with the Schwinger model and implications for CFTs in three dimensions.

Phenomenology of 10^32 Dark Sectors

We postulate an exact permutation symmetry acting on 10^32 Standard Model copies as the largest possible symmetry extension of the Standard Model. This setup automatically lowers the fundamental gravity cutoff down to TeV, and thus, accounts for the quantum stability of the weak scale. We study the phenomenology of this framework and show that below TeV energies the copies are well hidden, obeying all the existing observational bounds. Nevertheless, we identify a potential low energy window into the hidden world, the oscillation of the neutron into its dark copies. At the same time, proton decay can be suppressed by gauging the diagonal baryon number of the different copies. This framework offers an alternative approach to several particle physics questions. For example, we suggest a novel mechanism for generating naturally small neutrino masses that are suppressed by the number of neutrino species. The mirror copies of the Standard Model naturally house dark matter candidates. The general experimentally observable prediction of this scenario is an emergence of strong gravitational effects at the LHC. The low energy permutation symmetry powerfully constrains the form of this new gravitational physics and allows to make observational predictions, such as, production of micro black-holes with very peculiar properties.

Gaugino mass in AdS space

We study supersymmetric QED in AdS4 with massless matter. At 1-loop the ultra-violet regulator of the theory generates a contribution to the gaugino mass that is naively inconsistent with unbroken supersymmetry. We show that this effect, known in flat space as anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking, is required to cancel an infra-red contribution arising from the boundary conditions in AdS space, which necessarily break chiral symmetry. We also discuss an analogous UV/IR cancellation that is independent of supersymmetry.
