Gravity Cutoff in Theories with Large Discrete Symmetries

We set an upper bound on the gravitational cutoff in theories with exact quantum numbers of large N periodicity, such as Z_N discrete symmetries. The bound stems from black hole physics. It is similar to the bound appearing in theories with N particle species, though a priori, a large discrete symmetry does not imply a large number of species. Thus, there emerges a potentially wide class of new theories, that address the hierarchy problem by lowering the gravitational cutoff due to existence of large Z_{10^32}-type symmetries.

Non Pauli-Fierz Massive Gravitons

We study general Lorentz invariant theories of massive gravitons. We show that, contrary to the standard lore, there exist consistent theories where the graviton mass term violates Pauli-Fierz structure. For theories where the graviton is a resonance this does not imply the existence of a scalar ghost if the deviation from Pauli-Fierz becomes sufficiently small at high energies. These types of mass terms are required by any consistent realization of the DGP model in higher dimension.

Cascading DGP

We present a higher codimension generalization of the DGP scenario which, unlike previous attempts, is free of ghost instabilities. The 4D propagator is made regular by embedding our visible 3-brane within a 4-brane, each with their own induced gravity terms, in a flat 6D bulk. The model is ghost-free if the tension on the 3-brane is larger than a certain critical value, while the induced metric remains flat. The gravitational force law `cascades' from a 6D behavior at the largest distances followed by a 5D and finally a 4D regime at the shortest scales.

Black Hole Bound on the Number of Species and Quantum Gravity at LHC

In theories with a large number N of particle species, black hole physics imposes an upper bound on the mass of the species equal to M_{Planck}/\sqrt{N}. This bound suggests a novel solution to the hierarchy problem in which there are N \approx 10^{32} gravitationally coupled species, for example 10^{32} copies of the Standard Model. The black hole bound forces them to be at the weak scale, hence providing a stable hierarchy. We present various arguments, that in such theories the effective gravitational cutoff is reduced to Λ_G \approx M_{Planck}/\sqrt{N} and a new description is needed around this scale. In particular black-holes smaller than Λ_G^{-1} are already no longer semi-classical. The nature of the completion is model dependent. One natural possibility is that Λ_G is the quantum gravity scale. We provide evidence that within this type of scenarios, contrary to the standard intuition, micro black holes have a (slowly-fading) memory of the species of origin. Consequently the black holes produced at LHC, will predominantly decay into the Standard Model particles, and negligibly into the other species.

Expanding F-Theory

We construct a general class of new time dependent solutions of non-linear sigma models coupled to gravity. These solutions describe configurations of expanding or contracting codimension two solitons which are not subject to a constraint on the total tension. The two dimensional metric on the space transverse to the defects is determined by the Liouville equation. This space can be compact or non-compact, and of any topology. We show that this construction can be applied naturally in type IIB string theory to find backgrounds describing a number of 7-branes larger than 24.

Consistent Lorentz Violation in Flat and Curved Space

Motivated by the severity of the bounds on Lorentz violation in the presence of ordinary gravity, we study frameworks in which Lorentz violation does not affect the spacetime geometry. We show that there are at least two inequivalent classes of spontaneous Lorentz breaking that even in the presence of gravity result in Minkowski space. The first one generically corresponds to the condensation of tensor fields with tachyonic mass which in turn is related to ghost-condensation. In the second class, realized by the DGP model or theories of massive gravitons, spontaneous Lorentz breaking is induced by the expectation value of sources. The generalization to de-Sitter space is also discussed.

Supersymmetric Rings in Field Theory

We study the dynamics of BPS string-like objects obtained by lifting monopole and dyon solutions of N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theory to five dimensions. We present exact traveling wave solutions which preserve half of the supersymmetries. Upon compactification this leads to macroscopic BPS rings in four dimensions in field theory. Due to the fact that the strings effectively move in six dimensions the same procedure can also be used to obtain rings in five dimensions by using the hidden dimension.

Supersymmetry Breaking and Moduli Stabilization in AdS

We study the one loop effective potential for the radion superfield in the supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum scenario with detuned brane tensions. At the classical level the distance between the branes is stabilized while the VEV of the fifth component of the graviphoton is a flat direction which breaks supersymmetry. At the quantum level a potential is generated. This leads to a toy model of a supersymmetric compactification with all the moduli stabilized perturbatively.

Cosmic D-strings as Axionic D-term Strings

In this work we derive non-singular BPS string solutions from an action that captures the essential features of a D-brane-anti-D-brane system compactified to four dimensions. The model we consider is a supersymmetric abelian Higgs model with a D-term potential coupled to an axion-dilaton multiplet. The strings in question are axionic D-term strings which we identify with the D-strings of type II string theory. In this picture the Higgs field represents the open string tachyon of the D-Dbar pair and the axion is dual to a Ramond Ramond form. The crucial term allowing the existence of non-singular BPS strings is the Fayet-Iliopoulos term, which is related to the tensions of the D-string and of the parent branes. Despite the presence of the axion, the strings are BPS and carry finite energy, due to the fact that the space gets very slowly decompactified away from the core, screening the long range axion field (or equivalently the theory approaches an infinitely weak 4D coupling). Within our 4D effective action we also identify another class of BPS string solutions (s-strings) which have no ten dimensional analog, and can only exist after compactification.

Footballs, Conical Singularities and the Liouville Equation

We generalize the football shaped extra dimensions scenario to an arbitrary number of branes. The problem is related to the solution of the Liouville equation with singularities and explicit solutions are presented for the case of three branes. The tensions of the branes do not need to be tuned with each other but only satisfy mild global constraints.

Brane running and AdS/CFT

We extend the formalism introduced in the paper hep-th/0209050 to compute correlation functions in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show how the on-shell action of a scalar field in a compactification of AdS space can be obtained by flowing in the space of (non-local) theories with different sizes of the extra-dimension. Our method is relevant in particular for holographic computations in the Randall-Sundrum scenario with one or two branes and it allows the inclusion of brane-localized actions in a systematic way. The method can also be generalized to other backgrounds and does not rely on explicit knowledge of the solutions of the wave-equations.

Radion effective theory in the detuned Randall-Sundrum model

We compute the two-derivative low-energy effective action for the radion in the (supersymmetric) Randall-Sundrum scenario with detuned brane tensions. At the classical level, a potential automatically stabilizes the distance between the branes. In the supersymmetric case, supersymmetry can be broken spontaneously by a vacuum expectation value for the fifth component of the graviphoton.

Detuned Randall-Sundrum model: Radion Stabilization and Supersymmetry Breaking

In this talk I describe the low energy effective theory of the (supersymmetric) Randall-Sundrum scenario with arbitrary brane tensions. The distance between the branes is stabilized, at the classical level, by a potential for the radion field. In the supersymmetric case, supersymmetry can be broken by a VEV for the fifth-component of the graviphoton.

Supersymmetry breaking by Wilson lines in AdS$_5$

In the Randall-Sundrum compactification of AdS$_5$ with detuned brane tensions, supersymmetry can be spontaneously broken by a non-trivial Wilson line for the graviphoton. The supersymmetry breaking vanishes in the tuned limit. This effect is equivalent to supersymmetry breaking by Scherk-Schwarz boundary conditions.

Spin and a Running Radius in RS1

We develop a renormalization group formalism for the compactified Randall-Sundrum scenario wherein the extra-dimensional radius serves as the scaling parameter. Couplings on the hidden brane scale as we move within local effective field theories with varying size of the warped extra dimension. We consider this RG approach applied to U(1) gauge theories and gravity. We use this method to derive a low energy effective theory.
